+ -1 moreShelden came out and found mult. issues with my system. He got my wireless connection up so I could use my laptop computer. He took my system to his shop to add additional memory and to clean up mult. viruses. He also removed my old computer viruse scan which was taking up a lot of memory and causing my system to run very slow. He installed a new viruse scan program which was less expensive, and worked just as well as my old one. My system was running great within two days!
Description of Work: System had several viruses and would not shut down. Also needed a wireless connection for office computer.

+ -1 moreMaggie was so nice and friendly to talk with on the phone. She was upfront about charges etc. They kept in contact. Sheldon came to the house to examine my laptop and knew what the problem was. He advised me of the cost to repair and was honest before he took the laptop in saying the fix may or may not last very long. THAT had me sold. The repair was done and he even moved all my pics and files etc. onto cd's so I didn't have to worry about losing anything if it crashed again. It was returned to me in a few days and working fine. The experience was GREAT and I would suggest them to anyone and I would use again!

+ -1 moreSheldon arrived promptly, listened to my description of the problem and worked patiently at my computer, using the process of deduction to eliminate possible reasons for the problem until he found the cause: a Microsoft Windows Update I had downloaded was somehow interfering with the software that had worked fine until the download. He uninstalled that one update, took steps to make sure I couldn't accidentally re-install it again, and the software opened right up and worked perfectly once more.
Description of Work: Found and corrected a problem that was causing a piece of software on my computer to not respond when I tried to open it.

+ -1 moreCalled and set up time for him to come to the house to repair computer. Arrived as scheduled on Friday. He took the computer back to his shop to work on it and said he would return it on Monday. Returned it on Monday as promised with everything fixed and working again. He explained what he had done to make necessary repairs. He gave us both an Angie's list discount and an online ad senior discount. We are happy to have the computer working again and will call VSL Computer Services whenever we need service. We appreciated the quick service and reasonable cost.
Description of Work: AOL Internet service provider kept shutting down after logging on. We phoned Angie's List for recommendations for repair. VSL Consulting was called on January 12. Appointment made for January 14. Sheldon Livingston came to our home to determine the problem. Had to take computer to his shop to work on it and to repair corrupted hard drive and to update to AOL 9.6.

+ -1 moreAs it did in the past - very well. Both Sheldon and Maggie go over and above to serve and satisfy a customer. I would not hesitate to recommend VSL Consulting to anyone. My experiences with VSL have been very positive. Sheldon took the time to answer my questions. He also took time when I met him to pick up the computer to show and to explain what the problem with the disk configuration/programming was. NOTE: Sheldon does make house calls. In my case this year I had a number of things going on and was not able to work out scheduling. Since I was out anyway it was arranged so I would meet him where convenient for him.
Description of Work: Less than a year ago, Sheldon advised me about a new computer when mine, which was an older computer, was in great need of a lot! I took his recommendation to have a computer constructed at a company in Largo. Some months ago I began to get messages that I only had 3 MB or 9 MB of disk space left. Even after many efforts on my part nothing worked. I contacted Sheldon. We met and he took the computer to his shop. Apparently the company that had constructed the computer erred in the configuration/programming. Sheldon attempted to resolve the issue with that company for me. He argued my case but the company would not take responsibility for this even though the computer was not even a year old. Sheldon did not think that I should be penalized due to the error of the computer company. So, he spent much time and probably some expense to make the computer right and resolve the disk problem. He would not accept any payment for this. He expressed he did not feel right in doing so. I did not feel right in not paying him. In the end, I have made a donation to the American Cancer Society on behalf of VSL Consulting. There was no benefit in monetary terms to either of us. But both of our consciences do as will those afflicted with cancer.

+ -1 moreI was delighted with the service provided. I had chosen VSL because it was so highly recommended by other users of Angie's List. The service was not cheap. But it was fully effective. It was very straightforward dealing with Maggie and Sheldon. The laptop which is used both by me and my wife had more than three years of files and material on it. Consequently we were very afraid when the virus hit that we might lose everthing. Sheldon came to our house to pick up the computer and discuss the problem. He delivered it again, I believe it was three days later. In any case it took one day longer to get the laptop fixed up than what they had told me initially. But the time factor was close enough. The $171 we paid reflected a 10% reduction for Angie's List members.
Description of Work: My laptop was infected by a virus, making the computer inoperative. VSL's main man Sheldon Livingston successfully cleaned up my laptop, saved all of its contents and got it operating normally again.

Ben arrived right on time - clean cut - nicely dressed - professional - knowledgeble - and polite. (How often do you see that - expecially even looking neat and clean in hot humid Florida?) Sat down did his diagonastic work - fixed my problem - made recommendations and asked if I had any other questions/problems.
Description of Work: Lost connection to Verizon Fios (hardwire). They came out and fixed it and installed a new monitor that I had sitting waiting for me to install.

Brian was knowledgeable and didn't need much of an explanation before diagnosing the problem. He was patient with me, as I'm not very computer literate. He didn't mind explaining things. I actually called VSL twice, since he was here, with a minor problem, which he was happy to explain and rectify over the phone.

He removed all programs, etc that could become a virus, installed a free Microsoft Antivirus program and cleaned up the computer so it would work better. He also showed me what to do in the future to keep it working properly. Very professional. And, saved me money.

+ -1 moreThe laptop that I use for my main computer began randomly shutting down (with no warning!). It was also running extremely slow. I called VSL around 9:00a.m. Monday and they had a technician at my house that morning. The tech was extremely knowledgeable and was able to resolve all of the problems. I've used VSL a number of times over the past 3 or 4 years and have always been very happy with the results. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone needing computer services.
Description of Work: The tech analyzed the power supply. He also reviewed all of the programs running in background that were causing the computer to run very slowly, and made several suggestions for ways to improve the computer's performance.

Description of Work: Last year Sheldon took care of the problems with my computer. In the end I acted on his recommendations and a computer was built at a company he has used a lot in the past. I began to experience a lot of problems and getting messages that I only had 3 MB or 9 MB of disk space left. The computer did not work well and I uninstalled and took as much off computer as possible. I contacted Sheldon. We met and he took the computer to his shop. Apparently the company that constructed the computer programmed it wrong. Even though the computer is less than a year old, that company would not assist Sheldon in resolving the issue and argued the case for me that I should not be penalized for their error especially since the computer was not even a year old. When they did not take care of the issue, Sheldon went ahead and did so. I know that he spend a lot of time on this and possibly some expense. Yet, he did not think I should be penalized for the mistake the other company had made. He did not charge me for any of this and expressed he did not feel right in doing so. I did not feel right not paying him something since he had spent so much time to make the computer right. So, in return I have made a donation to the American Cancer Society for VSL Consulting. In monetary terms, neither of us really benefits. However, our consciences do and cancer victims will.

+ -1 moreSheldon was able to save my data to an external hard drive just in time. He also advised to several options I could take to rebuild my computer to make it more efficient for me to use. I think he spent more time trying to save the HD than he had billed me for. He is a true professional and I was extremely happy with the honesty and effort he put into the job. I set my mind on buying a new laptop replacement since I do video editing and I needed several upgrades (processor, graphics, HD, etc). Sheldon returned my data on an external HD and we learned a valuable lesson to backup data at all times. FYI - The Toshiba A505 with Intel Core I7 has changed my life. Love It!
Description of Work: My 3 year old gateway computer's hard drive was clicking and preventing the computer to boot. My concern was my newborn's video's and photo's that were not backed up. Sheldon come to my home and diagnosed the problem very quickly not wasting any hard drive left. We agreed to having him take the tower home where he could attempt to save and copy my data before the hard drive died.

+ -1 moreHe returned the laptop Monday morning at about 9 AM. All was done, and as I write this I am using the laptop. It is notably faster. On return he asked me to demo the speakers, Internet Explorer, and the printer. All AOK. He also said that over the weekend he tested the idea that desktop icons degrade perfromance on his father's PC. He encouraged me to reduce the number of icons, which I did by moving them into folders. The laptop is significantly faster, and the refresh is correct. I am more than satisfied. He did what I wanted. I did not have to learn any technical details.
Description of Work: My HP Pavilion (laptop) computer was slow, failed to refresh the screen correctly, and I had no idea what to do. VSL Consulting came to my home, reviewed the situation, and advised: (1) Too much security - remove two security products (2) Defrag disk. I also asked that he increase memory to 2G. He offered to do it over the weekend - I would have to do without the laptop until Monday.

He installed a program (Spybot) to run this monring, which it is doing as this is being prepared. His professionalism is outstanding and without any hesitation or doubt, I certainly would call upon him again and recommend him to any who inquite.

+ -1 moreThe company owner, Shekdon Livingston, appeared at the exact time he was scheduled. He was soft spoken and patiently waited until I explained my perception of the problem. After getting a history of what led up to the problem he knew what to do - and did it. He was free with his assessments, ideas, and problem prevention hints. Mr. Livingston was very polite,pleasant, knowledgeable, and professional in his demeanor. He also respects your own knowledge. His rate is reasonable and he doesn't waste your time and money. I found the whole experience worthwhile. I would and will call on VSL Consulting again and would recommend them highly and without hesitation to any one needing computer services.
Description of Work: I had several problems involving two desktop and two laptop computers. My main desktop had a problem with a system device that prevented it from accessing the internet. I also had problems with my laptops and my wireless home network system. Additionally, the case was removed and a diagnosis performed on an older desktop.

Description of Work: Two networked computers had several problems including a lost connection to a printer. Mr. Livingston restored all the functions expertly, efficiently, and quickly, and was able to explain the problems in terms which non-computer literate users like oursevles could easily understand. The owner came out within a couple of days and determined that I needed a new drive. He returned within 24 hours and fixed it. He was great and gave me recommendations on things that I could do on my own. The price seemed reasonable especially for a house call.
