My a/c is about 12 years old. I already know I have a Freon leak & that (due to the age of my unit) it's not really cost-effective to have it repaired. So I looked on angie's list, found three companies with A ratings and called them to get an estimate to replace the unit. Called Edd Helms, & the person that answered the phone said that they don't give phone estimates but they'd be happy to schedule an appointment, take a look at the unit, and then give me a written estimate. I said that was fine, but told the woman that I work less than 5 minutes from where I live, and asked her to have the technician call me when they were 15-20 minutes away so that I didn't have to stay home all afternoon waiting on them. She replied that it is there policy to do that anyway, because they don't like driving to appointments only to find no one there. On the day of the appointment I went home to have lunch, all of the sudden there's a knock on the door & it's the A/C guy. No big deal, I was home anyway, but when I told him he was lucky I was there & asked him why he hadn't called me, and replied "No one told me to call." OK, whatever. He takes a look at unit, takes some measurements, asks me some relevant questions, get's my fax # and email address and tells me he'll send me a written estimate in a day or two. Two days later I haven't heard anything from them so I called the guy & he said, "sorry, I'll have the estimate to you tomorrow." One week later I still haven't heard back from them so I'm buying a new A/C from another company I found here on Angie's list. Business sure must be good for this company for them to not even bother trying to get my business...don't know if the owner of the business knows or cares about this, but if I owned this business I'd be @#$%! Just lost about $4,000 worth of business.

At first they worked with us to get the contract signed. Working through the negotiation process took a while but we arrived. The installers were nice. They should start their own company with the head installer. Sales person, admin, and office staff ....read below. The problems we've had: They crashed a truck into the brand new roof (mistakes happen) and apologized, promising to pay for repairs. They pointed it out to us. No problem, just get it fixed. The problem is, they then charged full amount and will not follow up, or return calls to repair roof, unless they are selling excuses to not take responsibility. This is not cheap because, multiple roofers told us that the corner of the roof needs to be taken up to get broken pieces of wood out, and replace. Thermostat was installed to run on batteries. This is not what we discussed, as this is this is impractical In Miami. Manufacturer of thermostat says it would have just taken connecting one more wire at each end. Now they won't fix it, unless we [ay for them to come out. A few register grills were also not installed. We had them installed ourselves. Everything is courtesy and helpfulness as long as we don't have any issues with anything they've done or have not done. Whenever we've brought up these issues, they (sales person, reception, administration, the office staff, and others) have been rude, short tempered, and insulting, or just ignored us. After that kind of treatment, we have also tried going to company head. We have not heard back, despite repeated attempts. Why final payment was paid before roof was fixed and other issues resolved: they harassed us and someone paid in error, because our minds were on a family health emergency. The family member at the center of the emergency is who they kept constantly harassing for the payment, especially after we explained the situation to Ed Helms. Once they cashed the check, they took the money and ran. Just tried to contact them about this again to give them another chance at this before posting anything. We were asked by someone who has no knowledge of the issue, if it was ever brought up to sales person. We explained sales person pointed it out to us. This person now says that they pointed it out to show they didn't do it. I explained that was not the case and said how the sales person apologized and promised to pay to repair the roof (when he first pointed it out), and I further elaborated. In short, he asked questions and responding with other reasons of why they are not responsible, again, not having the necessary knowledge of the issue or the events (speaking of what was meant in conversations or what was said without having been there nor having spoken with anyone who was). When I asked how he could make those statements abandoning responsibility, while not having knowledge to, he responded by saying that he will speak with sales person and get back to me. If experience with Ed Helms has taught me anything, it is that they will not be calling back. We will never do business with them again. It is difficult to decide who to hire for this. We regret that we hired them, and that feeling is most difficult. We suggest you save yourself the being mistreated, insults, rudeness, yelling, short tempers, being ignored, the broken roof and thermostat that runs on batteries, with a company who's automatic response is to weasel out of their responsibilities and leave their clients with the bill.
Description of Work: Installed Air Handler, Compressor, and register grills. Done in two parts: install first, and then returned to finish, once power turned on. Big addition and renovation project. All that was left standing were the walls and roof frame when it began, so it took a while for them to be able to come back and finish install, because of other work being done at site. They had to wait for others to finish and inspected (including electrical), so that power could be turned on. Then they were able to come back to finish.

I am not an AC technician. So this is just my version of the facts. Please take it with a pinch of salt. Still I am a fairly handy homeowner that does a good share of home improvement projects and I have a master in quantitative sciences that make me very comfortable with math and physics. A sales rep came in to quote an AC replacement. Instead of replacing the AC he recommended to replace the ducts. He came to this conclusion by looking at the vents size. He said the reason why the house does not get cool is because the heat loads are not correctly calculated. For example, currently I have a small vent on top of the gas stove (which produces a lot of heat when in use) and a larger one on top of the kitchen table. His recommendation is to invert them. I think that may slightly help but considering that both vent are in the same room and just 10 feet away I think the kitchen should get cool nonetheless if the AC was working properly. Plus I do not cook very much and the stove is seldom in use. He also said that he would not be surprised if most of the cooling goes in the attic rather than in the house due to holes in the ducts. The guy was pushing the entire time replacing the ducts without even inspecting them. I had to explicitly ask him more than once to double check the ducts in the attic to validate his diagnosis. I also filled him in with details about the house insulation (which he did not ask about). The guy clearly came in with a mission to sell ductwork. In the end he opened the access to the attic and peeped in with a torch. And he concluded that the ductwork was very bad. What he does not know is that another certified vendor replaced the ducts just a few months back. I am sure the work may not be perfect but I can tell you that after redoing the ductwork the house got much cooler than before. He also did not check the air-handler (which I know is very old and dirty and need be replaced). His advice was: replace the ductwork first and then if that does not work change the AC unit. That was disappointing. I may be wrong but my expectation from an AC professional is to exactly tell me what is the issue and how to efficiently resolve it. I asked to send me a quote for both, replacing the ductwork and the AC. Replacing the AC unit quote came in around $3800 for a 3 ton which is a little above market price but still within an acceptable range. The quote for replacing the ductwork of a 1100 sqf home came in for $5000. When I had the ductwork replaced a couple of months back I paid separately for material. That was less than $500. The 2 technicians that performed the job were at my place for 1 day. Now take $500 out of the $5000 that makes $4500 to have 2 guys from Edd Helms install new ducts in the attic........ All of a sudden I start realizing why the salesman was pushing replacing the ducts all along. Because that is where the money is. But again this is just my take. I was hoping for a more impartial opinion. Hence, my disappointment with this provider. Still based on other users? reviews I believe that if given the contract they would do a good job.

Sorry we disappointed this customer, but as experts in our our field we cannot install and connect new air conditioning equipment to a seriously deficient air duct system and guarantee the AC system will properly cool the home. Our salesman visually inspected (with his flashlight brand name of Torch) the ductwork and advised the customer it had been improperly installed and was contributing to his cooling problems. Its difficult to tell a customer (particularly a customer with a masters degree in quantitative sciences) he had thrown his money away, and gotten less than he had paid for. It was obvious to us the duct system was not installed in accordance with proper building codes and likely was done without permits and inspections. Here is the proposal we provided this member on February 8, 2012: Edd Helms Air Conditioning is pleased to provide this proposal to replace the air conditioning and duct system in your home. Duct system: 1. Removal and disposal of the existing duct system 2. Install 8 New Flex Supply Air Ducts 3. Install New Flex Trunk system 4. Install New Grill Cans 5. Seal all Grill Cans at ceiling with caulking 9. Seal all Supply Air Ducts with Mastic in Attic 10. Plans and Permitting Included Warranty: One Year Labor and Manufacturer’s Warranty on Duct work Total for the Duct system; $ 5,101.00 - $585.00 FPL Rebate = $ 4,516.00 Terms: 50% down and Balance upon completion of installation. Ruud 16 Seer 3 ton system reinstalled in attic. • Removal and disposal of the existing system • New Ruud Condenser Model: 14AJM36A01 • Ruud Variable Speed Air Handler: RHKLHM3821JA • 10kw or 7.5kw Heater • Auxiliary Drain pan and Safety Overflow Switch • New Code Approved Concrete Slab and Stand for outdoor unit • Reconnect to the duct system, electrical, copper and drainage system • All Materials and Labor • Permit is included Warranty: One Year Labor and Five Years all Parts. They had the best price out of all the companies I had received quotes from. Their presentation was very professional, and the sales representative was very nice. They were very punctual and their follow up was very good as well. There was a little damage to the wall in the room where the unit was, but they did have to remove a very large unit from a very small space. There is only about a 6 inch scratch in the wall, and they could have easily done more damage removing the unit, so I’m happy there was as little as there was. The unit I had installed works very well though.

Member, Clogged drain lines are one of the most common problems we are called to correct. Surprisingly, they can be one of the most difficult problems to fix as we all tend to ignore the need for periodic maintenance when things are working. South Florida's heat and humidity requires your air conditioning system to remove lots of moisture from your home, through small drain lines winding through walls that clog up with algae and yuck growing in the slow moving water. Hope your home did not suffer any water damage. Sorry you had the problem but appreciate your calling Edd Helms for service.

Our air conditioner stopped working on a Friday night. I had just joined Angie's List a couple of days before and at that time had been looking at electrical. Edd Helms had high ratings, so I called them. The woman who answered the phone was very friendly and told me they would call before coming out. It took several hours before they could come, but it was a Saturday. My husband was concerned that our a/c would not be fixed until Sunday or Monday, but when the tech got there, he determined very quickly that it was a part for the compressor and he had one on his truck. Our repair was completed very quickly and inexpensively. We were very satisfied.

Description of Work: I called to obtain pricing information on duct rewrapping and/or replacement, I was told that they do not do this work in the summer and that I would have to wait until October before they would do it. What???? Granted it's hot but there are ways to keep cool in the attic by way of fans, or time of day when you work in the attic; like most businesses that do work in the Attic. I did not give them an "F" because I felt the grade of "D" was just as bad.

About 2 pm, I noticed it was getting hot downstairs. Even though the air handler was blowing, it was hot. I checked the condenser unit outside and saw the breaker had tripped. This had happened yesterday also, but I chalked it up to the twice-daily lightning storms we get this time of year, and the unit came back on as soon as I flipped it. When the same thing happened today, I was pretty sure we would be sweating tonight. I went on Angie's list, found Edd Helms at the top of the list, and spoke to Trish, the Customer Service Agent. She told me someone could come out in about an hour! Carl was here in about 50 minutes, assessed the problem, and was done within the hour, no extras, no unforeseen problems. This company is one of the few that truly bring back"Customer Service and Satisfaction" of old times. Anyone who complains about their pricing should learn the trade themselves--the education alone is a fortune, and do you think parts are cheap? Outstanding company!! Charlie Rousseau
Description of Work: Evaluated the problem quickly(burned out condenser fan motor), didn't have the part he needed, so Carl told me he would be right back with the part. It took him about 15 minutes to get the part needed, and did the repair/replacement in about an hour. He also gave me an evaluation of the air handler, which is really old. Very professional and friendly, answered any questions I had, and all was cool in the house. Angie's list recommended this company--I agree wholeheartedly. All A's! CER

I was in the middle of putting up a new outdoor ceiling fan on my back porch when I realized that the fan I purchased was not compatable with the solid state fan control switch that was previously installed on an inside wall. The fan instructions claimed that using such a switch could couse short or fire. When I went to take fan control off the wall and replace it with a standard light switch I discovered more wires that I new what to do with. I thought about playing the guessing game, but that didn't really seem wise. I jumped on Angies list, found a nearby, reputable electrical company, and within 10 minutes had an appointment for the next morning. The guy showed up on time, was very friendly, and answered all my naive questions about wires. He got wires straight, installed the new switch, and finsished the rest of the fan installation for me. The whole took less than an hour and cost me $85, which was alomst a much as I paid for the fan, but I consider that worth it if it prevents an electrical fire. I would definitely use Edd Helms Electric again!

Awful. First call: We called because their number was on our A/C in our new house. The thermostat kicked off at a certain temp, and thought it was a thermostat problem. The guy installed a new one, and it kicked on and he left. Sure enough, it kicked back off a few minutes later. They would not honor any kind of warranty, less than 24 hours later to come over to actually fix it. Next day, A different guy came back out a second time, but when my husband said he didn't want to pay a second time, the woman on the phone told the tech to leave, "they can sweat". (real nice, we have a 4 year old and animals). The second guy was nice enough, and told my husband to check the drain that leaves the house, and reported to his office that we had a hole in the drain, something he clearly couldn't have deduced if she told him to leave without service. I called to find out if they would see reason and help us. She told me she would call me back after researching the problem and talking to her manager, but never did. Apparently asking for a 24 hour warranty on their work and good name wasn't important enough.I understand how they have to pay their guys, but how can they charge me $150 and not fix my problem, and not try to make it right? They could have sent the first guy back out, since they paid him once. I would have understood extra money for parts or whatever, but can't even try to make it right? Nice. Well, last week, we called another company out to drain the condensing pipe. That was the initial problem, not the thermostat and not some alleged hole in the pipe. It was severely clogged. Fine, now I spent another $100 on that. Well, Monday, it shut off again. A friend recommended his family member to come over (thank God), and his findings were that the entire condensing until was frozen solid (block ice, I helped thaw it out) because the switches on the back of the thermostat were both in the "on" position, requiring the unit to remain on, even when it wasn't needed. Now I have spent a total of $410, not including the new thermostat (which we didn't need), for a problem that could have been easily fixed by cleaning the condensing pipe that leads outside the house. Their tech should have diagnosed that for the value price of $150, which we paid the first day. In a time where companies should be standing by their work and their good name, they managed to cost my family a significant amount of money to fix not only the initial problem, but also to fix the mistake of their tech. They could have easily sent someone back over, in good faith that we were not trying to screw them, and it looks like they did that to us. Luckily for the consumer, social media and online complaints (with the state's attorney, the Better Business Bureau, and Angies list), allows me to spread the message easily.

Response from Edd Helms Group Inc
Customer purchased their own thermostat from local home improvement store and tried to install it without success, leaving wiring unhooked when we arrived. They called us Friday night after business hours for labor only price of $150 to install the thermostat they purchased. For this one hour emergency call we wired up customer furnished thermostat, verified Ruud AC was cooling properly when it started, but customer did not want to pay to let unit run for a while to make sure there were no other problems. Regrettably, once the unit ran for the rest of Friday night and all day Saturday, it stopped again Saturday evening and the customer called us back requesting no charge warranty service. We explained our warranty policy that if this problem was not related to the wiring of the thermostat, additional charges would apply. Customer agreed and we dispatched our technician Saturday night finding cause of problem was blocked condensate drain line and AC unit off on safety float switch. Customer said they had no money, they refused to pay for this additional and unrelated repair. This is one of the reasons it is our policy not to install customer furnished materials, but we made an exception with the thermostat when customer told us they had small children and pets in a hot house. In hindsight, we should have declined the initial call. The customer convinced another contractor to come out and pay additional money clear the drain line only, but did not want the other contractor's technician to monitor the operation of the AC unit after it started running again to make sure there were no other problems. Finally the customer says, a family friend came out and determined the AC unit was frozen up, due they say to a miswired thermostat that kept the unit running all the time. That means both the Edd Helms technician and the second contractor's technician missed this. Since receiving this report I have sent two emails to this customer in an effort to determine if this AC unit is yet cooling to her satisfaction after two contractors and one family friend working on it. No response from customer but I will try contacting them again. We regret ever disappointing a customer, but in hindsight, our policy not to install customer furnished materials thus complicating any warranty matters should have been followed.
