A leak appeared in the interior ceiling below joint/transition of flat roof and pitched flat-tile roof. Leak was "repaired" by another local contractor (recommended by a friend) last summer. By this spring the "repaired" leak had gotten much worse. These previous roof repairs by this other contractor were so sloppy, unprofessional and unsuccessful I determined not to "invite" him back to fix problem again. I then called three different contractors all rated highly by Angie's list. Estimates ranged from $925 to $3,500, albeit for quite a different range of "solutions" to my roof leak. I chose the least expensive "solution" from Johnston Roofing based on the age of my home/roof, and the fact that this "solution" addressed the immediate problem alone and not potential future problems elsewhere (somewhat of a gamble I suppose). Furthermore, the representative from Johnston Roofing was the only one of the three who followed up to inquire about their estimate. The work was completed by Johnston Roofing as described in the estimate, on schedule in a timely manner, and at the estimated cost. I have waited several months until after the South Florida monsoons started to write this review. The monsoons have arrived (it's now early July) and so far so good. The leak appears to have been repaired successfully and no new ones have appeared...(yet? this IS a 40 year old house in South Florida after all). I would (and have) recommend(ed) Earl W. Johnston Roofing to others.
Description of Work: Repaired leak in flat-tile roof at joint/transition to flat roof. Removed existing tile, replaced underlayment, re-sealed joint, reset tile. Section repaired is approximately 6' x 6'.

called on a monday got appointment for estimate for friday, it was not the cheapest estimate but they seem very reliable and came highly recommended on angies'list.the contract was signed on the following wednesday. I was contacted by Meg who works at the office, she helped us in choosing the tiles and ordered samples for us, she even gave us some addresses where we could see roofs made in the tiles we liked. the work was delayed a couple of days because of weather, but a week later the workers were on the roof, in one day they tear off the old roof, replaced all the lumber that needed to be replaced, included the whole fascia and the first protective layer was layed on the roof, one week went by between inspection and weather before they could mop the layer of tar, it took one whole day, another week went by and the tiles were delivered and layed the next day, it took also a whole day. The fact that the weather has been very bad (we had 25 consecutive days of rain , the rainy season started just the day we signed the contract),and they still managed to keep the timeline they had promised was very good. The workers were very curteous and cleaned up everything after each day of work, they even protected the lawn so the delivery truck would not mess it up, Mike who gave us the estimate and followed up was very helpful and professional, the only thing that was not accurate in the estimate was the amount of lumber we needed to replace, the estimate included 100 ft we had to use 260 ft,which added $788 to the estimate, they also accepted the coupon from angies'list. overall it was a wonderfull stressfree experience, and the roof looks amazing.

UNBELIEVEABLE. Saved me over $3,000.00 (as estimated by another roofer) by correctly identifying the problem as not with the roof but with caulk around a window!!! Could have sold me a very expensive roof job, but the honesty was unbelievable. Even after spending over 30 minutes, climbing on the roof NO CHARGE for the service call. Called prior to coming out to confirm. Showed on time. Offered additional very useful adviced. HONEST, TIMELY and STAYED UNTIL PROBLEM IDENTIFIED. WoW!!!!

He physically went into the attic to diagnose the situation. He found that it was not, in fact, the roof that was leaking, but stated that it was the up stairs tub or toilet drain that was leaking instead. He indicated that I would require a plumber to take care of this situation. He was kind/experienced enough to take a picture of the problem for me so that I could use it to explain my dilemma; getting right to the chase. While in the attic, he also alerted me to a potentially serious problem with my dryer vent. He took a picture of this problem as well. He stated that he would e-mail the pictures to me as soon as he returned to the office; however, I never received them.
Description of Work: Roofing Technician came to my home for what I believed to be a roof leak. He physically went into the attic to diagnose the situation. He found that it was not, in fact, the roof that was leaking, but stated that it was the upstairs drain, tub or toilet leaking. Although when all was said and done, he did not actually "perform the work" he was crital diagnosing what the problem was which is to me IS "performing a critial function of the job."

From initial phone call to end of job, very thorough and professional. Mike showed for the initial appointment precisely at 12pm as scheduled, took care to explain exactly what they were doing and the repair crew was out in less than 2 days though Mike had said the backlog might be 5 days. The job was nicely done and any mess was cleaned up thoroughly.

Perfect! They came out when they said they would, gave the estimate, showed me what they would do and how long it would take. These guys are pro's. They are not here to rip anyone off and are fair with their estimate. I'm not from here ( S. Fla ) and all I can say from this experience is that I found my roofing company..

Our flat roof was leaking so much that I had buckets in the house. They came, gave a fair estimate and performed the work in a timely and professional manner. The workers were courteous and efficient. They had more repairs than originally thought, but they were prepared and performed the repairs without a hitch. Clean up was thorough. I would recommend them highly.

Good experience. They showed up on time and the roof looks great. They cleaned up the outside after they were done (roof cleaning brings down a lot of dirt). They cleaned my gutters at no additional charge. The 2-year warranty on the pet- and plant-friendly fungicide is transferable to a future owner. The fungicide cost the same as the cleaning (about $550 each); I'll know next year whether it was worth the investment.
Description of Work: I had them clean my tile roof and apply the fungicide they offered.

After making a really bad choice for a house painter (not on Angie's List) the year before, I was determined to choose a roofer with the greatest number of high ratings on Angie's List. That is how I found this company and we were not disappointed. We were totally satisfied from the beginning when Sales Rep Michael Wilde patiently explained the various options, to the end when he made sure everything on the punchlist was taken care of, to the follow-up when we recently had an issue with some portions of the GAF Energy Capsheet which was a new product just starting to be used in Florida when our roof was done. We did not have any leaks but in the low areas of the roof where water sometimes stands, a difference in the appearance of the capsheet was noticeable. Mike and the owner of the company came out right away to examine the areas that were of concern to us and after they consulted with the manufacturer they addressed the situation to our complete satisfaction. We were very impressed with their response. After removing the old roof, wherever they detected rotted wood roof decking they made the necessary replacement as per our contract. They were not obligated to replace the nearby rotted wood siding that was discovered only after the rotted portions of the roof deck were found, but they took care of this problem too - quickly, professionally and at a very nominal additional charge to us. We were really grateful that we did not have to hire another contractor to come in after them to replace the siding. They handled every detail of the re-roofing for us, including overseeing getting the FPL rebate for the Energy Capsheet. During the re-roofing they allowed us to go up on the roof to view their work in progress and I was very impressed with how hard the men were working and how thorough they were. They were all so courteous and considerate and left the yard s*** and span clean afterwards.
Description of Work: Removed old flat roof (2,826 square feet) on main part of our house and installed new 3 ply fiberglass felt and tar flat roof up to the current code; with special GAF Energy Cap highly reflective capsheet and copper flashing (more expensive than standard galvanized flashing) to match flashing on other areas of our house; included installation of 2 new replacement skylights that we provided. Mike told us about the FPL rebate program for using an Energy Capsheet, and found a new GAF product that would qualify for the rebate, and we began seeing savings on our electric bill as soon as it was installed.

Job went just as Mike (employee who gave estimate) said it would. There was a slight additional charge due to portion of siding that I wanted repaired. Work crews arrived on time and worked without incident. They were polite and cleaned up afterwards. Coupon from Angie's List was honored upon completion of said job. Regarding the next section of this report. I did NOT get any other estimates. I found this company on The List and signed the contract after speaking with Mike from the company. It sounded like he knew what he was talking about and the price seemed within reason, so I did just went with it. Also, a co-worker just had her house re-roofed a few months earlier and she was pleased also. She did get other estimates.
Description of Work: Re-roofing of entire house, except for add-on storage rooms. Existing roof was barrel tile, installed over 33 years ago. I owned house since 1975, so I don't know what happened previous to my ownership. One sectioned had to be tarred over since existing slope was unable to be re-tiled. Re-roofed with tile instead of shingles. It was more costly, but was guaranteed twice as long and is better looking.

Excellent. David arrived and fixed the leak. I went up on the roof to see the repair because I had a previous leak in another area which was repaired by someone else, which was just patch worked. David's work was excellent, and his roof repair matched the original roof very well. I will use them again if I have any problems in the future.

They gave me a discount because of being a member of Angie's List. I don't feel comfortable with them because when they inspected the roof they said it was okay but you check it and found it needed to be repaired. They came back and repaired it. I have no way to judge their work until it rains enough.

Our home is approximately 3000 Sq. Ft., garage included. From the moment their salesman came to our door, there was something different about this company. On time, professional, polite, etc. In South Florida!? Clearly a cut above the rest. From there on in, it was no different. Their work was done with Swiss Watch precision. Showed up as scheduled, tore off the old roof (day 1), restore/replace roted wood and lay down paper (day 2), and wet mop (day 3). Tiles loaded and laid (days 4 & 5). They were around our home a total of 5 days. At the end of each day, they cleaned up after themselves. It looked like they had never been there. Every last one of their workers is polite. After 22 years in South Florida, dealing with Earl W. Johnston Roofing is the best experience I've ever had in home improvement/repair. Likewise with Broward Solar. How many times has it happened that once the work starts, something always comes up, the workers appearance, delays, excuses, shoddy looking equipment. You get a feeling that something seedy is happening to your home. With Earl Johnston, you feel like you are flying first class. Many of my neighbors asked about the company doing the work, but the biggest compliment came from a former executive of a large building contractor, who is also my neighbor, he contacted them to have them do his father-in-law's home. What more can I say?
Description of Work: Complete re-roof. I got an estimate from several companies. Earl W. Johnston was not the lowest in price, but I decided to go with them because they had such a high rating on this forum. I have a 40 gallon solar hot water tank on the roof and they helped me get with a contractor (Broward Solar) who took the tank off the roof and reinstalled it when the job was over. Broward Solar's is also an impressive company.

Our house looked its age (70 years old) due to a very dirty roof despite it being replaced less than 8 years ago. I checked Angie's List and then called (voicemail) and emailed Johnston Roofing with a request for an estimate. That same afternoon, Mike called and we discussed the project. He contacted me again within a week indicating that he would be in the neighborhood and would measure the roof and leave me a written estimate. To accommodate my work schedule he came earlier in the day than he had planned. I agreed to the work based on the estimate and was asked for a 10% deposit (amazingly low). They called ahead to schedule the exact day the work would be done. Even though I left a voicemail confirming the appointment, Mike called that morning just to confirm again. The work was done well, the roof looks great and there was no dirt, mess or debris left behind. Only the invoice had the balance due. I loved the professionalism, follow-through and workmanship. It was a pleasure.

I had a leak repaired 2 times previously over the last year by other roofers, yet it was still leaking. Mr. Johnston diagnosed the problem as something no other roofer stated the problem was. The repair men arrived 20 minutes early and went to work right away. Mr. Johnston arrived later with more supplies as there was more damage than he originally suspected. He made sure the rotted wood was replaced, and also replaced all tiles that had been broken by previous repairs and replaced with tiles that did not match. He also patched my leaky patio roof in the back at no cost (I had asked for an estimate for another days work). The work was done quickly and within the estimated time frame, and the extra work was at no additional cost. Everyone was professional and cleaned up after themselves. He assured me that if my home leaks in the same spot again, he will be back to fix it at no cost (other roofers told me it was a "new leak" and would not honor their warranty).

From the first phone call, to "Mike Wilde" coming out the same day, I was very happy! Mike, I felt, went out of his way trying to detect the leak before going to the extreme of going into the roof and all before a contract or any payment. Explained in detail what needed to be done to find and fix the problem, and I signed and gave my 10% deposit (very reasonable). Called within a hour to schedule the repair for the next morn. Came exactly when said, workers worked hard and were very informative on every step! Leak was detected and I have to trust this information because I wasn't up there, and I'm not a roofer! Fixed leak, and was told I wouldn't have anymore problems. Cleaned up perfectly, and as stated, would even paint the part of the house they sealed. A pleasure to deal with, and frankly, I have no idea what this should cost or what would be to much, but they gladly accepted the 10% off for Angie's list coupon, and I would have paid anything to fix the leak. In other words......PRICELESS!
Description of Work: Problem with a leak that could not be detected from first investigation because of no access to the area from inside, so workers had to remove tiles, tar paper and then cut into wood to inspect inside crawl space. Tried to perform tests to duplicate leak before going to this extreme, but were unable to. After "going in", the source of leak was found and repaired. All materials were replaced and reinstalled after repair. Clean up was perfect, and even wanted to paint the house where they sealed wall, but we couldn't find extra paint. Only time will tell if the leak is a memory, or if it will rear its ugly head again! But, I feel very confident it is fixed!!

Even though the company did not actually do any work, I applaud them for telling me that they could NOT help me. They suspected that my balcony leak was NOT a roof issue but maybe an unsealed window or door issue. I have had several companies come out and do work, charge me, and not return my calls when the area still showed a leak.

Called the company a rainy morning when water was running into the living room from the leaky roof. The estimator showed up a few hours later, and completed an estimate on the spot. I accepted that right away, and repairs was scheduled for next day. The company called later that afternoon to verify that workers would be there at Noon. They showed up within 5 minutes of the scheduled time and went to work immediately. The job was completed 6 hours later. They cleaned up nicely, and took all the garbage with them. Then they left a pre-printed invoice with the exact amount of the estimate. I called the company the next morning to arrange for payment, and asked if they would honor the 10% off coupon from Angie's List. They said that I should have mentioned that to the estimator, but that they would honor it anyway. Overall a very positive experience. Will definitely use this company again.
