They were very pleasant on the phone, and punctual in keeping the appointment for the estimate. The representative, Mike Wilde, was friendly, professional and knowledgeable. He explained the nature of the work needed, gave me a price, and accepted the Angie's List discount coupon. He told me they would call with a date, approximately 3-4 days. The next morning I received a call saying they had an opening, and would they be able to come that day, and I agreed. They arrived on time and completed the work in a professional manner. There has been one rainstorm since then, and no leaks so far. I would use this company again and recommend them to others. My experience with them was very positive.

I was able to get an appointment within 48 hours of my call and convenient for my work schedule. The representative was punctual and professional. I reviewed my problem and he did a quick inspection and found this very small area the likely culprit. He water tested it and then showed me what he found. It was a small area that he encouraged me to patch on my own. I did and it worked great. No $ spent. Roof fixed. FYI, I received two other quotes to fix the roof of $300 and $1600 from other companies. I would use this company again without question.

They promised that they would keep the job site neat and clean and they did. When they left at night everything was picked up. They were relatively quick and it was a painless process. They were very polite and nice people to deal with. They made it easy to get it done. Their price was good. We had other similar quotes and some more expensive quotes. The roof looks great so as long as it doesn't rain and leak. I was never here when they worked so I wouldn't know about their punctuality.

As far as the work is concerned, they are excellent. They came out on the day that they said they would. When they left, I found that there was a hole that they had overlooked. I called them back and they had somebody come back on the very same day to fix it again. What turned me off was that they didn't honor the 10% off discount that they put in the book. I questioned the man about the 10% discount. He said that I'd have to call the company office to do that. When I called, they told me that they had already given me their lowest price. To me, the fact that the work was done was the main thing. I was impressed with that.

They did a nice job on the roof and the rest of the work was bad. The office staff is very bad. Getting paper work from them was tough. I had to call them many times. They did an excellent job. There delayed in finishing the work. They do good work and have good reputation, but the staff is very bad. They are one of the most expensive people out there. The owner himself came down and did the job. They put good quality products and did excellent work. The attitude of the staff is very bad. They had great reviews on Angie?s list and that?s why I went to them. I was thrilled with the quality of work they did. The work was finished in June and I was able to send the paper work to my insurance company only by July. They actually signed the contract in May. They were supposed to start the work in 5 days and even after 10 days I did not have information about them. When I called them their attitude was not good. Couple of people was really good and I could deal smoothly with them. The quality was good, but the effort I had to take to get the paper work was unacceptable.

Very Poorly. We were unhappy with the length of time, incomplete and inaccurate estimate leading to 25% higher bill, lack of communication from the office, extra charges not on estimate, unwillingness to honor Angieslist coupon and poor clean up after job. Below is the email I sent to the company and a timeline of events. Initial contact was June 4, roof was finaled on August 21. Total time= 87 days. We took a week to get estimates before deciding to go with them and 5 days we were out of town which also increased completion time. Adjusted completion time = 70 days. **************************** We called EWJ Roofing to fix a leak in our roof and stated that we were Angieslist customers and let them know we knew about the angieslist coupon. John, our rep, said great, "we take our Angies List rating seriously," and gave us a quote on our roof repair. We have a leak and have been told it is where 3 roofing types meet (pitched, rolled and commercial plastic). We received multiple quotes: this was the most expensive quote but we decided to go with it anyways. The company had a great angieslist reputation, offered a coupon, plus believed we would be fixing it correctly, and would not have any future problems. I spoke with John regarding the roof repair so that I understood what they were going to do, the price, timeline and process. John gave us a quote but it didn't have the price filled out so I called him back to discuss. John explained that their minimum bids are $3000 and that we would be under that threshold for repairing one flat deck. Total area is approximately 425 feet. So he would replace 2 for $3400, which would save us some money. Well, spending $3400 instead of $3000 doesn't save us any money, but I am pretty sure he meant that it was a better deal. We agreed to have the work repaired and asked how to proceed. We understood that they were going to replace 2 sections of roof and replace the rolled roof. The timeline was a little hard to predict because of the rain but would be about 3 weeks (per office staff). The company would email me the paperwork and I would sign and fax. After review, I noticed that the 10% was not applied and the quote was missing fascia. (There is noticeable fascia damage in the NE corner where the repair is taking place). I called John and he said to write the 10% on the contract and he would include 2 boards of 8 x 1 fascia as well, without charge. He asked me to measure it so that his guys would bring the proper pieces and I did. I asked if I needed a new contract and he said, "I give you my word". I received the emails of the paperwork and filled them out and faxed them back. I didn't mind the extra time the mail would take as it was a approaching the weekend and office staff would not be processing my paperwork even if John had come to pick it up. I mailed it on Friday. I received a call on Tuesday from the office staff (Kim) verifying the name as the owner of record because it didn't match mine. The Broward county appraisers office shows my husband as the property owner. I verified the information: my husband owns the property, is on the tax records, and we have different last names. I explained this and she said ok. I called the office on Friday, June 26, to check the progress and find out what the next steps are and when my roof repair would start. I was told that the paperwork was already in process at the city and that their turn around time is 1-2 days. I asked if I should expect a call by the end of the upcoming week and was told yes, by the end of next week someone should call and schedule a date. On June 30th, I receive a call stating that the name is incorrect and my husband needs to sign and "by the way" we are not honoring the 10% discount as it doesn't cover flat roofs. After further conversations, I am told that repairs are different from replacing a flat deck. That the coupon states "10% off repairs, not 10% off flat decks." I know very little about roofing terminology and I feel that it is too late to come back and discuss price, especially when it was already agreed to. It is a matter of semantics to tell me that my roof requires something other than a repair and so now doesn't qualify. I asked for a repair, John quoted me for a repair and used the term repair often in our conversations, and okayed the coupon. The office received my paperwork, verified my property information, confirmed a scheduling call, and ordered the permits. It seems deceptive to say at this late date (3.5 weeks after first contact) with contracts signed and permits ordered that the quote will not be honored. ********* Seeking a resolution, I sent this email but never received a response. I spoke with John and after multiple attempts to contact the office to work out a solution and have them honor the coupon, I finally asked them to split the coupon. I asked for a 5 % discount and John obliged. It was now the beginning of July and my husband went into the office to pay a 10% deposit to start the roof repair. They now were unwilling to start work without 10% down. 3 weeks later, Mid-July, I had not heard any updates and called the office. I was told that delay is due to the city. They had not received the permit back from the city but were still waiting to receive it. When they received it they would call to schedule a day to complete the work. Tuesday, August 4, I receive a call saying that August 5 they would like to schedule work to be completed. We are unable to have work completed August 5 as we are out town August 5-9 and work is scheduled for August 10. Crew starts and completes roof work on August 10. Old roof is removed and new roof is put on. Roof crew invites me up on roof to show where a portion of the roof is 4 roofs thick before they remove it. (One of these layers also contains insulation.) One worker mentions that there might be an extra charge because it will take them longer to remove roof. He also mentions that John had equipment on his truck and should have taken a 'core sample' of roof as that would have shown the roof layers over the builtup area of the roof (150 sf). John comes over to check on progress, we also go up to look at the roof. John and I look at roof and he mentions removing the layers of roof material. He does not mention there will be any additional charge for this work. I ask about insulation and but they will not replace it and John recommends that I add insulation by covering the exposed beam ceilings inside the house. John leaves and gets work completed. At the end of the day the carpenter tells me where to apply caulking to seal gaps between sofit and fascia board. He says it is not covered in the contract but needs to be done. He also says that he replaced a larger area of fascia because it was easier for him not to cut the board. I notice that work crew leaves some trash around site: empty plastic bags, gatorade bottles, food wrappers and some roof debris. Worse, they also dropped hot tar on my painted patio and doormat. August 19, I receive an invoice for the extra work, $248.00. The breakdown is: 60, 1x6 T & G- included in contract, 48' 1x8 Fascia (4) - $192.00, 12' 2x4 rafters (12) - $54.00. Total Bill is $246.00. I call John and ask him about the breakdown. I tell him that the replaced wood is 31 feet but that I thought he was replacing this for free when he gave me his word. He said he would only replace 20 feet. I explained what the carpenter told me about it being easier not to cut the last piece and that there was no reduction for fascia. He said he would speak with the office, let them know he had promised the 2 boards of fascia to be included, and ask them to send the corrected bill. Friday, August 21, city inspector finals roof. Saturday morning we receive a new bill left in our mailbox. New bill still has 36' of fascia, 12' rafters and NOW $600.00 worth of additional charges to remove the additional roof layers (3 sqs x 4 layers x $50/sq) $600.00. Total Additional charges are now $798.00 Total bill is currently : $3239.50+$798.00 = $4037
Description of Work: I will revise and update this review if anything changes. But we are being charged $4037 when the estimate was $3240 - almost 25% more than the estimate!!!!! We contacted them in June and the work is only now complete August 21st. Below is a timeline from start to finish. We went with Earl Johnston roofing specifically because of the great reviews on Angieslist. We called 3 other Angieslist companies. This one was the highest price but (we mistakenly thought) the most thorough in inspection. We had a re-occuring roof leak towards the back of our house which had been repaired 2 times and we were looking for a permanent solution. The leak was near a joint on 3 different roof types on a flat roof of approximately 425 sf. Earl Johnston was the only company that recommended that we replace the entire flat roof (it was only 3 years old) but the recommendation was made because John told us they have a minimum repair amount of $3000.00.

Response from Earl W Johnston Roofing LLC
It is unfortunate that you were displeased with our company. As you can see from other reviews on Angie's List this is not a normal occurrence. I hope that we can clarify some of these issues: We were called to come and give you an estimate for repairs on your flat roof. As you stated we recommended replacement of the flat roof to stop the problems that you had others try to repair without resolution. This is a re-roof, which is stated on the contract you signed. While out for the estimate, John was on the roof with your husband in the rain with a tarp on the roof. The type of roof that was the top layer was what is called an EPDM roof, which if a core sample had been taken could not have been resealed correctly without multiple, costly steps that would have been an additional charge to you. Without these proper steps being taken it would have caused more leaks and more problems in your home. It is for this reason that the contract that you had signed included that if there were additional layers of roof there would be an additional charge for their removal and disposal. Unfortunately we were not able to see this until the old roof was removed. It did turn out that there were 5 roof layers in all on one 300 square foot section of the roof. You were made aware and shown these layers by the crew at the time of tear off. The 4 additional layers of roof at $50/sq did result in an additional charge of $600. Had we known of the extra layers of roof prior to tear off the price would have reflected this same amount as well. Unfortunately there are no coupons for discount on flat reroofs. We did however honor the 5% discount because of the confusion. We did also credit $35.25 for the issues with the fascia. We had received the signed contract via fax. We had contacted you about signing permit papers and getting 10% deposit stated on contract. You asked for these to be mailed to you, which we did. When we received them back, without the 10% deposit, it was noted that you are not listed as property owner with the Broward County Property Appraisers. The property owner, who you advised was your husband, must sign all permit papers authorizing work. On July 28th your husband came in and signed all the permit papers and the deposit was received via credit card, binding the contract and allowing us to apply for the permit. This, combined with the weather once the permit was issued and you being out of town for the 1st day we had tried to schedule did cause delays in our normal process. Our office was not made aware of any "clean up" issues that you had or they would have been addressed. We apologize for any confusion on our end, however this is why we have written contracts stating all information to avoid any future problems.

They showed up right on time and were very professional. They were careful when removing the cement tiles so that they could be relaced - saving me the cost of replacing broken tiles. They were busy all the time they were here - a short lunch break and a very short mid afternoon break. I was very pleased with the workers and the superviors. Very professional.
Description of Work: We had a leak in our kitchen area. They inspected the roof via the attic and from the outside. The leak was located in a valley, so the cement tiles were removed, the metal flashing and the underlay tar paper were removed & replaced. The tiles were reinstalled and cemented in place. The area was left clean and all debris removed.

I did get 3 estimates. I chose the most expensive estimate because of the quality of the inspection. The inspector went into the attic and check the roof thoroughly. I have a small spot on the ceiling near the AC vent and wanted to make sure I did not have a second leak. The man showed me where the water was leaking on the facia and explained everything to me. None could be found. I received an itemized bill. The other 2 estimates for $450.00 and $700.00 less but I did not have anything itemized. I had to wait almost a week to get the 2 estimates faxed to me and then, as I said previously, I only had an amount and not what work would be done. I felt better with the itemized statement and the explanation. The estimate was given to me the same day by the inspector.
Description of Work: Removed tiles, resealed areas with roofing cement, changed sheeting, etc. The work was done in a timely manner. Everything was cleaned up nicely.

A leak appeared in the interior ceiling below joint/transition of flat roof and pitched flat-tile roof. Leak was "repaired" by another local contractor (recommended by a friend) last summer. By this spring the "repaired" leak had gotten much worse. These previous roof repairs by this other contractor were so sloppy, unprofessional and unsuccessful I determined not to "invite" him back to fix problem again. I then called three different contractors all rated highly by Angie's list. Estimates ranged from $925 to $3,500, albeit for quite a different range of "solutions" to my roof leak. I chose the least expensive "solution" from Johnston Roofing based on the age of my home/roof, and the fact that this "solution" addressed the immediate problem alone and not potential future problems elsewhere (somewhat of a gamble I suppose). Furthermore, the representative from Johnston Roofing was the only one of the three who followed up to inquire about their estimate. The work was completed by Johnston Roofing as described in the estimate, on schedule in a timely manner, and at the estimated cost. I have waited several months until after the South Florida monsoons started to write this review. The monsoons have arrived (it's now early July) and so far so good. The leak appears to have been repaired successfully and no new ones have appeared...(yet? this IS a 40 year old house in South Florida after all). I would (and have) recommend(ed) Earl W. Johnston Roofing to others.
