Description of Work: Every year before hurricane season, I have Mike of Earl Johnston Roofing come out to check my roof for potential problems. Every time I call for any matter, they are most responsive. I have used this wonderful company for more than 20 years. One Saturday, the owner actually came out to see what my problem was. They are the best! I recommend them to everyone and my friends and family always agree.

This was our second roof in 30 years from Earl Johnston Company. We like the fact that the owner takes a personal interest in every job and represents his family's ethics. His work crews showed up exactly when expected, worked efficiently and cleaned up debris. We appreciated the fact that they did not play loud music or were in any way intrusive - cannot imagine anyone doing a better job in our brutal Florida heat and humidity. Of course removing an old roof is a very noisy, house-shaking affair, so next time we would vacate the house during this phase. We also appreciated the fact that Rick came specially after the installation to paint all new wood and vents. We highly recommend this company.

They are not the cheapest from the other companies I looked at. The people that came to work on my house are really great. They are very professional. They came over and did everything. They do care about the customers questions. I told them about some minor stuff and they came over to look at it and they did what has to be done and it was done perfectly. I would go to them again to replace my roof. They worked on the roof for 9 hours straight. They took out everything. They replaced everything that was bad and they put everything new. The money I spent to them was definitely worth it. I don’t have any complains with them. They are really good people.

We are a Realtor representing the Seller. We quoted with 5 providers, two of them were better than the others. Very impressed with the industry as they all showed on time. Earl W Johnston Roofing Inc is one of the two we are recommending to do the job. Very professional, clearly understood what needs to be done and priced competitive, not the best price, but a fair price.

I have known Earl Johnston roofing for many, many years.. They have (in the past) done all new construction when my company was in the business of construction. I call earlier in the week and needed an estimate for my leaking roof. Made the appointment for today, Saturday, July 20th... Mike Wilde showed up promptly at my 10:30 am appt. He met with my husband and I and checked the roof leak. He fixed the problem, told us what happened and he did not charge us a penny!!!!!!!! I know this company as being very honest, dependable and truly the best roofing company in Broward County.!!!!! I would highly recommend Earl Johnston roofing for all your roofing needs. Oh, I had another company from Angies List come out "Morton Roofing" and they wanted to charge us $400 for the same roof leak. If you need a roofer, please, please call Earl W. Johnston Roofing.. They are family owned and operated and when, on Monday, I get my estimate for a new tile roof. I will let you know how that goes. Love to the entire Johnston Roofing Team. You are the bomb!!!!!

Al, the estimator for Earl W Johnston, inspected our damaged roof and called a couple of days later to give us the price for the necessary repairs. We accepted the offer, and Al emailed a written contract to us. We signed and returned the contract to their office, and a few days later a two-man crew completed the repairs to our roof. The whole process went very smoothly. We would definitely use Earl W Johnston again in the future.
Description of Work: Our clay tile roof was badly damaged by a crew of workers contracted by Terminix to fumigate our house for termites. Earl W Johnston Roofing replaced 40-50 tiles and repaired many other cracked tiles.

As a requirement the homeowners in our community must have their roofs cleaned annually; in December 2010, I started working with Earl W. Johnston Roofing, who cleaned my roof, repaired broken tiles, and applied the Roof-A-Cide treatment to prevent the mold and mildew buildup. Roof-A-Cide is a treatment that must be re-applied every 2-years for its effectiveness and to meet the warranty needs. On December 7, 2012 Earl W. Johnston Roofing applied another treatment of Roof-A-Code to allow me to stay current with the requirements of my HOA and warranty.

The roof that is on your house now was put on by our company in 1998 for the previous owner. You had called us out for a roof inspection for the sale of the house. There were some minor repairs that were needed. You contracted us to take care of these items and we did on 4/2/13. Another roof inspection done by your buyers company indicated an opinion of 3-5 years life whereas ours indicated 5-7 years. The shingle currently on the roof is a 30 year dimensional shingle, which is the same shingle that the reroof estimate we provided is giving you. The remaining life of the roof is an opinion by a qualifed roofing contractor and not a home inspector. These are likely to vary based on experience. The reroof estimate was requested by you after speaking with us about the opinion of the other inspector. We didn't feel the roof needed to be replaced at this time and we stand by our opinion. The advice that we had given you is our honest opinion and weren't trying to get work from you that you didn't really need. We don't feel that the sale of your home was lost by us giving this honest opinion.

I can't say enough about Earl, his company, our main contact Al, the crew, and the whole of the process and end result. We recently purchased a 2400 square foot house and knew a new roof would be needed. We had five companies bid on the work, to which Earl Johnson was the second most affordable, but much more importantly also the most complete, knowledgeable, and thorough with the bid. The bid had all information necessary for us to have a level of comfort that there wouldn't be any significant surprises. Earl / Al were fantastic in explaining everything and clearly did their homework via the inspections before presenting a bid to us. As it turns out, the estimate was almost dead on -- even though we chose a more expensive tile mix, had some unknown wood damage that required replacement of rafters, fascia, plywood, etc. The craftsmanship was second-to-none and they were unbelievably quick. Also a nice, long, full & complete warrantee was included. The roof was torn off, tarred, and papered in less than a day, and once the tiles were delivered they were installed in one day. Simply phenomenal job. Ask for Al and he'll definitely take care of you.

Somehow the home inspector, two realtors and myself missed a leak on the edge of the roof in the front of the house. In any case I saw it and called these folks out. The inspector arrived the next day and provided a price (Angie's List coupon accepted after the price was given-classy!). The repairmen (2) spent a full day making the repairs. The repairs were very minor but the workmanship was impressive-hence the full day. If you are a do-it-yourself type you would enjoy watching.

A new roof is like a root canal, pricey, painful but necessary. (Short version) Salesperson was late on the first sales-pitch day, about 30 minutes, but he did call. They were not the least expensive, but I chose them because they seemed concerned about my concerns of my property (which was not really the case). Called twice during the roofing processes, no one called back. Broken fence (which was fixed later), screwed up satellite service (I paid to get fixed), broken garden ornament, stolen garden ornament, tar hand print on house, still picking up debris, just got rain and my gutters are now sieves, not sure if you are suppose to be able to pick up the edges of shingles along the eaves of the house, (but I can tack those down myself, once I get up there). Left a six inch square hole to my attic exposed. I had this list of concerns as the job was going on but could not get answers. The last guy to show up to my house, for the remainder of the monies, he did listen and got the fence fixed as I stated, but nothing else was address. At this point I am glad not to have a roofer at my house, so I will deal with the repairs myself. I can't say they were bad, it was my first roof experience, maybe all roofing companies are the same. Only time will tell if the new shingled roof was all that was promised. Good Luck to anyone needing a roof.

[edited out member name], We pride ourselves on quality customer service and to receive this review 10 months after your job is complete comes as a surprise to us. You contracted with us to replace your flat roof which was "L" shaped when we started your job. We replaced your flat roof in August, 2012 (not January 2013). The job was inspected by your city and done to all South Florida Building codes requirements. You signed our contract which clearly states any lumber replaced will be an additional charge. When your roof was torn off by our crew, a substantial amount of rotten lumber was discovered and had to be replaced in order to provide you with a completed job. Our representative, Alvaro (with whom you signed the contract) was there on the same day to show you the wood and explain that there would be additional cost to replace it. We are not sure why you mention in your review "the boss was on vacation" and what that would have had to do with anything pertaining to your roof job. We also want to mention that we take our job very seriously and would never have any employees with beer bottles on a jobsite. Once the job was completed and the city's final inspection was done on 8/13/12, you refused to pay the balance due including the additional charge for lumber. After numerous attempts by Alvaro and Meg, our office manager, to collect the payment, you finally agreed to a meeting in October 2012. Earl Johnston, Alvaro and Meg all went to your home to review the work and resolve your concerns. We did not get your final payment until weeks later and have never heard from you again until this review. We are always here for our customers and if you still have any concerns please call us to have them addressed.

We have a 4200 sq foot home that had some bad leaks developing...Having prolonged this problem because of the bad experiences of friends and families and being in the construction trades for many years and seeing the nightmares of other people, I can only say I am so pleased and thankful to Earl and all his crew.. Al, the sales person was extremely pleasant, knowledgeable, and outlined a great informative presentation of what to expect...After having requested estimates from some of Angies list roofers in my area, receiving an email with a price and saying call me if you have questions...Al and I sat down and negotiated a final package.I was very pleased that they were receptive to compare and to negotiate accordingly....I felt comfortable with results and signed..Their terms on deposit and payments were important and acceptable, compared to others. The job went like clockwork ,with them making me aware of the next phase as the job progressed..In a matter of weeks my roof was done...They were timely and always did what they said....David,crew chief,is a professional and very capable person who solves many unforeseen problems as they evolve..Jesus,the tile master, did a superb job...My roof has many valleys and angles and was not your standard reroof...Earl,the owner, walked and inspected the roof with me ,found several things that were passable but not to his standards and without any hesitation said" this will be taken care of ",including a small scratch in one of my four skylights which I would have never seen,,,.What a relief..an honorable and honest owner..All permits ,release of liens and paperwork ,including a warranty, were sent in a matter of days...I did not receive ANY compensation for this review.....rather, I am just a happy and pleased customer and would highly recommend Earl and crew to anyone..Thanks...and thanks to Angies List for the their service

The roof took a little longer than we expected, but it was not their fault. Upon completion, they sent me three additional bills, upwards of $3000, for wood that they had to replace. I don't disagree with this, but he never told me about this before hand. No one ever reviewed this issue with me and I never approved of it. I told him I didn't feel comfortable paying for expenses outside of the contract. Now I have received a letter from his attorney telling me that I am being sued by him. I never refused to pay the money, I just never agreed to additional expenses especially such a large number for wood. I have never met the owner, I've only talked to his assistant. I think as the owner of the company he should have to come to my house and introduce himself to me at least once.

We are surprised that this customer has chosen now to write an Angie’s List review as we have been trying to get her to respond Company since August 2012 when we did the initial reroofing job was performed. On August 30, 2012, once the original roof covering was removed by the crew we were able to see a significant amount of rotten lumber. This lumber had to be replaced to properly install the new roof. This was explained to customer by Meg Romeo, the Company’s Office Manager, as the job was going on. The potential for additional charges, such as this is clearly stated in detail in the signed contract, including SPECIFICALLY, that any additional lumber required, once the roof was removed and the condition of the lumber could be ascertained , is chargeable. The customer understood and was advised that we had to replace the rotten lumber in order to do the roof. The customer advised that she would be at the house later in the day to see. She did go to the job in that same afternoon and went over additional lumber with Roberto, our driver/supervisor at that time. On August 31, 2012, Ms. Romeo discussed the dollar amount of the lumber that was replaced with customer. The lumber invoice and photos were mailed to customer at her request on this same day. The invoice for the additional lumber was only “additional” invoice that was sent. All other invoices were progress payments on original contract amount. Customer stated at that time that she would not have the money to pay all at once and on behalf of the Company, Ms. Romeo, agreed that payment arrangements would be discussed. One week after final inspection on the roof was performed and passed, we received a payment in the mail from the customer with no correspondence regarding the additional charges we had previously discussed. Ms. Romeo called the customer on numerous occasions and left messages on both telephone numbers provided by her, but there were no return calls from the customer. Earl Johnston, the Company’s president, called and left several messages himself on both numbers with have with no return calls. Mr. Johnston was trying to set up a time to meet the customer at the property to go over all the lumber installed, but was unable to schedule the meeting since the customer refused to return any phone calls to set a meeting time. On January 16, 2013, a certified letter was sent to the customer who refused to pick it up from the post office. It was returned to the Company as unclaimed on February 16, 2013. The customer was called again and emailed with no response. A copy of the certified and unclaimed letter was then mailed to the Customer via regular mail. Since there was no response from the customer in the last five months, there was no other option than to enlist the assistance of the Company’s attorney. Our attorney requested that customer respond to him by May 31, 2013 to resolve our payment issue. Rather than contact either our attorney or us, the customer posted this review. We take pride in the reviews that we receive on Angie’s List being a Super Service Award recipient for the last six years. These reviews are important for us to evaluate our performance, quality, professionalism and responsiveness. We feel the customer is using this review site inappropriately instead of corresponding with us directly or, at this point, our attorney, as we have been trying for the last five months. Notwithstanding the present situation or the fact the customer has continually refused to discuss this matter or a payment arrangement, we are hopeful that the customer will contact us and we look forward to an amicable resolution with this customer. As a reminder, and a general rule in work involving your home, we encourage homeowners to read your contracts in detail with your contractor.

Mr. Mike Wilde was our point of contact and he orchestrated the whole re-roofing project from start to finish with the utmost level of professionalism. Something that you wouldn't expect from a roofing company who are often stereotyped as dishonest company's. The owner of the company, Mr. Earl Johnston also gave our roof special attention in handling the details of the TPO flat roof installation. Mr. Johnston made several trips to inspect our roof to make sure that the job was done correctly. To date, the integrity of the roof has remained 100% with no visible leaks in the house. The roof has been thoroughly tested by the typical South Florida spring downpours we have been receiving over the past few months. We highly recommend Earl Johnston for all of your roofing needs. Thank you so much Mike, Earl, and the roofing team for taking good care of our roof. David R. Hollywood, FL

So far it has not gone well. My roof is old, but we can't replace it because it's attached to my neighbor who does not want to replace the whole roof at the moment. The guy told me not to worry, and that they could repair all three leaking areas. I've paid over $2000, and out of the 3 leaking spots only 2 are fixed. They started servicing my roof back in November, and I'm still experiencing leaks in 1 of the original spots. It would have been different if they had told me they couldn't do it, but they are still coming out and I'm still making calls to them! It's been quite a process, and I'm not satisfied. They last time they came out to try to fix it was 2 weeks ago, and again it's still leaking.

We have been honest since the beginning that you needed a new roof and what we could do would only be temporary. You knew that as well, but didn’t have a cooperating neighbor to have it done. We have come out each time that you have had a problem in a timely manner and done what we could to try to resolve the problem. We were unaware that you had a leak at this time until we received this review. When out two weeks ago, we did want to tarp the roof for you until your neighbor was ready to reroof, however, you requested we try to repair instead, which we did do under our warranty. Earl is willing to meet to see exactly what we can do or to tarp the roof as previously suggested.
