I called this company twice for a quote on electrical work. Both times I was told someone would call me back but no one ever called. Apparently by their other reviews they do good work, but I'll never know.

Dear Member, Thank you for using Angie's List rating system. Unfortunatly we have no record of you ever calling our office and requesting an estimate. You state you called two times, it would be very unusal for us to not have any documentation of these calls especially if they were in request to an estimate. When calls come into our office for an estimate they are entered into our computer system and an estimate form is created. This form goes up on the estimate board and is documented on an estimator sign out schedule sheet. One of our three estimators will pull the estimate from the board, sign it out and call the customer to set up a time for the estimate. It is Company policy that this be done within a 24 hour period. [removed member name] is not in our computer data base nor does the name show up on our estimator sign out sheet. We have six people in our office that could have taken your call. All are very well versed on the company procedure and importance of customer estimate request. I have spoke to each one and none of them is familar with your name. Could you have perhaps mistaken us with another company ? We have tried to contact you however your number is not in the phone book nor does it appear in any search engines. One of the Co-owners is going to send you a letter and ask you to contact us so we can determine what happened. All calls that come into Gulf Coast Electric are taken very seriously and handled in a professional manner. As unlikely as it appears from our end we still apologoze if we did misplace your call concerning your estimate. According to the date on your rating report this happened over two months ago so I would assume the work you needed an estimate on is completed, if not, please give us a call I am sure you will be pleasantly surprized at the results you get. Thank You

Dear Member, We understand your frustration. You sent Angie's List a estimate request on our behalf just as you stated on Monday 5/12/2014. During the time frame of May 7, 2014 through May 21,2014 we were experiencing problems retrieving messages on the Angie's List web site. It was very frustrating on our end also. We could log into the Angie's site but when we went to the message center the screen would go completely green. We have documentation where we reported this problem to Angie's List on May 7, 2014, unfortunately the problem was not immediately corrected and it was reported again. Apparently during this time frame Angie's List was updating and or doing maintenance on their site which was not allowing some businesses the ability to log in and retrieve and or respond to members messages. The first time we were able to properly access the sites message center was May 21, 2014 when we responded to you. It is unfortunate and I apologize to you that in our email responce to you on May 21 that our office manager did not explain the reason for the delay. We take all request for estimates very seriously and normally respond immedialtely. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. I would assume by now you have your electrical problem taken care of if not please call and we will give you top priority. Thank You

Everything went very well. Craig is an experienced electrician. He worked quickly & got the job done right the first time. I value his experience & advise about safety. He gave us a tip about buying smoke detectors. Make sure that you check the date on the back of the devise. They are only good for 10 years & must be replaced. If you buy a detector that has been on the shelf for a number of years, that reduces the life of that device in your home. Very nice tip. I will ask for Craig the next time I have a need for an electrician.
Description of Work: Relocated wires getting in the way of a shower box we were installing. Craig had to repair a wire that was burned thru due to me nicking a wire when cutting thru the drywall. We needed more slack in the wires leading to the switch box, so he installed a junction box some distance away that allowed for more slack & to make a proper connection for the wire that had to be cut & reconnected. He used two plastic junction boxes that are much safer than the metal box that it replaced. After doing this work the shower box fit perfectly! We thought we would have to move the box a little higher, but after relocating the wires, we didn't need to. We also wanted a recessed pot light installed in-place of an old glass globe light. We were concerned that Craig might have to crawl into the ceiling crawl space, but after looking at the installation, Craig determined that the work could be accomplished without going into the ceiling. We now get more light than before. Craig moved the light slightly to one side, so that it wouldn't get in the way of a new glass sliding door that we will install later. Craig was very friendly & knowledgeable. He connected the ground all the way back to the breaker box. This was not the case when this house was built in 1981. Craig also gave me advise about replacing a neon fixture in the garage. The fixture I have uses bulbs that are no longer being manufactured, but the fixtures are still being sold. I will follow his advise & purchase the new, style of fixtures & bulbs. In the long run it will save me money.

Still waiting for an estimate before I can have them do the work. It has been a week so far, but I will keep posting every few days and update the time for their response. I was truly impressed with the knowledge of the rep from gulf coast, and would love for them to do the work upon obtaining an estimate.
Description of Work: I called Gulf Coast Electric on 12/09/2013, to provide an estimate for replacing a fuse panel with a circuit breaker, and wire 240 for Electric Dryer, and Stove. Gulf Coast representative came to the house on 12/10/2013, he was friendly and very knowledgeable on what needs to be done. I understand that Gulf Coast would not be able to provide a full rewire of the home, but I still wanted them to replace my circuit breaker, and wire power for an electric stove and dryer. As of 13 December I still did not receive an email with their estimate for the work that I would like done, I called them concerning the estimate and was told that they were short handed and will work on the estimate asap. as of 16 December, I still do not have an estimate for the work I would like done.

Dear [member name removed], Our estimator met with you, your wife and father on December 10, 2013 at 9:00 AM as scheduled. Your estimate was completed and detailed on our Proposal-Acceptance -Contract form on December 12,2013. It was emailed to you on that same day at the email address you provided and it was also sent via US mail. I am not sure why you have not recieved it. The email might have went to your junk mail or spam folders. I suspect that by the time you have recieved this responce you will have recieved the US mailing of the Proposal. I am emailing the Proposal to you again and I will also call you and confirm. Thank You. Just spoke with your wife, asked her to have you call. The mailing adress that the Proposal was sent was to your new residence and apparently you are not getting mail at that address. Sorry for the confusion, still don't know why you did not get the email. Looking forward to your call.

Overall, it was excellent. The electrician, Dale, did a great job. He frequently checked with me about how I wanted thing done or what my preferences were to make sure everything was to my liking. He was efficient and knowledgeable. He cleaned each work area as he went. I highly recommend Gulf Coast Electric. If there was a downside, I was not provided any cost information when I scheduled the appointment but Dale, the electrician, provided me the hourly rate while at my home. Their costs were very reasonable and the bill arrived a couple of days after the work was completed.

Company had me on their schedule within 48 hours of my call. Dale called to let me know he was on his way, and identified himself and presented a business card at the door. He quickly determined the old 220V dryer receptacle was burned out and needed to be replaced, and he was also able to move it up the wall so it could be disconnected without moving the dryer. As he was working, I pointed out that the duct connection was not right, and he was able to do a better job than the plumber who had attempted it when I moved in a couple of weeks before. He also checked the vent and warned me that it was obstructed and needed to be cleared to eliminate a fire hazard! He cleaned up thoroughly, showed me a detailed work order/invoice, and let me know I would receive the bill in the mail. No need to write a check on the spot! Very polite, professional, and knowledgeable service... clearly a customer-oriented company. I would highly recommend them and will call again if needed.

If my husband accepted their contract, it must have been all day and the price must have been more than he has to. My husband checked around and checked Angie's List and they were the best. They were great people. They were here in no time after talking to them and everything was done that day and then they came back and checked it again.

Craig was early and fortunately so was I. I showed him the fan that I wanted to take down and the fan that was making noise. First, Craig found that the person who installed the old fan (i.e. the one being replaced) did so improperly (a plastic box). Craig replaced the box. It took him a while to fix what was done and install the new fan. He actually read the instructions that came with the fan. No problems with the new fan. No apparent wobble and no squeaky sound. Craig looked at the fan that was installed last fall and found a few things wrong. Craig was able to fix the noise problem and get rid of the wobble (the manual said there would be some wobble when on "high"). I had the three bedroom fans replace last fall too and discovered the remote to the master bedroom fan was also working the family room fan while I was in the master bedroom. As a result, Craig set the fans to different codes so a fan would not turn oin an empty room in error. Craig was there for 3 hours to get the work done. Most of it was taking out the old box (held up by 3 screws) and installing the new box. Note: Last fall I had a contractor major makeovers to the 2 bathrooms and swap out the ceiling fans (I bought the wrong fan for the front room - flush mount for a cathedral ceiling...oops) and replace the florescent light in the kitchen with a modern fixture. One person preformed the work. Installing tile, the light fixtures, vanities, painting, and the fans. I think what I have learned is that a jack of all trades is an expert in none. Overall the work looked great but I wonder what may come up in the future. Next time I act as contractor and hire experts in each field to do the work. ;-) I was very pleased with Craig and his work.
Description of Work: I have an investment property and my tenant had complained that a new fan (installed in September by a contractor doing bathroom upgrades for me) was making a squeaking sound. I also wanted to replace the fan in the front room with the same model fan that was making the squeaking noise.

Dear Member, Thanks for the nice comments on Craig he is a excellent electrician and thank you for your business. Your comments make a interesting and important point that all homeowners and Angie List members sholud be aware of. When it comes to electrical work, plumbing, HVAC and other trades it is important to hire licensed professionals to do the work. Most handyman/contractors are not licensed to perform specialized work that require independent license. When a handyman or contractor moves from the realm of minor repairs or construction work that he or she is not authorized to do, they are entering the area of unlicensed activity and are subject to prosecution. There normally is no such thing as a legal "jack of all trades" and homeowners should beware that not only could they be putting their property at risk they could be held responsible for adding and abetting a unlicensed contractor not to mention problems with homeowners insurance for coverage on items not performed by a licensed contractor. In our area only a licensed electrical contractor can perform electrical work. There is no license, certificate of competency, for a handyman they are only required to get a occupational license(Business Tax Receipt) and when doing so they must sign a affidavit stating that they WILL NOT install wiring, replace switches or receptacles, install light fixtures, install ceiling fans, install plumbing fixtures, make roof repairs, any structural work, etc. the list is very extensive. Unfortunatly not many adhere to the signed affidavit. This work must only be done by the appropriate licensed, insured contractors. Hardly a week goes by at our firm that we don't run into a electrical issue that has been incorrectly performed by a unlicensed contractor posing as a jack of all trades, handyman, maintenance man. Many times the work has been done incorrectly, not per code and creates a hazard to life and property. The simple installation of a vanity light over a bathroom sink, or a ceiling fan, it not installed correctly can be very dangerous to the homeowner. Your closing comment that you will now hire experts in each field to do your work is the right path to take. Thank you again for your business it is sincerly appreciated.

We are getting ready to move to Florida and we needed information on how much services would cost for electrical work on a house with aluminum wiring to help us decide whether or not some of the homes would would fit into our budget. With the understanding they couldn't give us a full estimate with out seeing the homes in question, Don gave me information on comparable jobs for homes with different square footage. Not only did he give me the information I needed but he also gave me information on problems I might encounter when it comes to insuring these homes which is something I didn't even consider. I was very pleased with Craig and all the work he did for me. He is extremely nice and very professional. When he introduced himself, he presented me with the company business card. I showed him everything that I wish to have done and he was on it in no time. He made recommendations for my future projects, in which I will be using this company again! He worked non-stop from the minute he walked in until the work was finished. I know my job went beyond the time that was probably slotted for me, and Craig just kept on working hard. I kept adding things for him to do or kept asking him questions. He was very patient with me. I will highly recommend Gulf Coast Electric to my neighbors. It was a great treat to discover such a dependable company. Even when I made the appointment the gentleman that answered the telephone was courteous and so helpful about what I wanted to do and explained all the rates etc..

Dear Member, You are correct, you called our office on Wednesday 2/6/2013 and requested a estimate to install lighting for a renovation project. Per our Company Policy all estimates are scheduled by the estimators and they are to return phone calls within 24 hours. Unfortunatly you were not called back until 4 business days later Wednesday 2/12/2013. That was unacceptable and I apologize for that. We have two estimators and one of them has been having some health issues which has had him out of the office frequently however that is no excuse for not returning your phone call promptly. We may not have been able to comply with the urgency of your estimate request at that time but we certainly should have extended you the courtesy of returning your phone call promptly. That error was not only a breach in company policy but was disrespectful to a potential future customer. I appreciate the fact that you gave us the oppertunity, sorry we failed. I also appreciacte you responding on Angie's list, your review even though negative for us will hopefully make our staff more aware of how important it is to follow policy. Thank You, Please give us a shot again on your next electrical project. Jeff R. Linn President GULF COAST ELECTRIC

Bottomline: I was charged for a free estimate. I had requested a free estimate on some substantial electric work at my home. During the phone call the telephone attendant asked if I had any emergency repairs. I said no, but I agreed that they could look at some of the small items on my list (an outlet--here is where I went wrong, she had her hook to charge me.) She mentioned a $67 dollar service call for repairs performed. I said I understood. So when the guy shows up I tell him I just want the free estimate. We walk around the property, discussing the work that I had in mind and I finish with what he thought the estimate would be. He said he would have to go back to the shop, but before he went he said I was being charged for the visit and I might as well have a repair done. I was flumoxed, but realized as I talked with the gentlemen he was unable to do an estimate, they had sent a low level technician and I was being charged for my estimate. I had him repair an outlet. I was charged $162 to fix an outlet. Then Roger calls the next day and says "I am to do your estimate." I took time off from work again and met him. I let him know I was unsatisfied that I had asked for an estimate, got switched with a technician that I thought was doing the estimate, and then charged. When I went by to pay the bill, which totaled $162 (remember, I only had an outlet replaced) I was introduced to "Dave" I handed him the invoice and told him their charges were unacceptable for a free estimate. I said I knew that there was to be a $67 service fee if I had repairs ...he interrupted me and said very tersley and pointedly there was never any discussion of a $67 fee. He had the paper in his hand, and it clearly said "Service fee--$69." I knew he was not going to listen. I thanked him for his time and left. So, beware they overcharge, they attempt to pull you into repairs to pay for their "free estimate."
Description of Work: Don't let them charge you for a "FREE ESTIMATE"

Response from GULF COAST ELECTRIC
Bottom Line; Customer, your comments are not correct. You have taken the liberty in this public forum to insult the integrity and moral ethics of not only our employees but the integrity and moral ethics on which our 33 year old company was built around. Your comments are not only unjustifiable and incorrect they are very hurtful and damaging and we take strong offence to them. Communications in all avenues of business is extremely important. However the best of communicators are at a disadvantage if the person receiving direction and or information does not listen. To be a good communicator you must also be a good listener. In this case the customer’s accusations are so outlandish that my first impression would be that the customer is literally out for some unknow reason to damage our reputation. Due to the fact that the customer paid his invoice in full and due to the fact he came by our office to speak to someone about his concerns my conclusions is that the customer truly believes what he said in his comments to be truthful. It is a shame that communications can get so misconstrued due to poor listening that such a negative conclusion could be drawn. For the Angie’s List members that are reading this and considering doing business with our company please keep in mind we have been operating our business in Destin, Florida for over three decades. If we operated at all like this customer said we did in his member comments we would have been out of business long ago, not to mention we would have never accumulated the awards and accolades that we have for operating with the highest degree of morals and utmost integrity. The customer called our office on January 15, 2013 he requested two services, first he had a problem with a light fixture on the bedroom patio that was shorting out and he wanted this item fixed. This electrical work was scheduled for an electrician on the afternoon of January 16, 2013 to make the requested repairs. Secondly the customer had various other items that he wanted an electrical estimate on which included adding a sub panel, a timer for a new pool pump, accent lighting around the pool, and lighting for a back yard grill. The customer was told during the original call that an estimator would contact him within the next 24 hours and set up a time for the estimate. At Gulf Coast Electric we have electricians that generate revenues for the company and we have estimators that do estimates. The electricians do not give estimates and the estimators do not do electrical work. This was explained to the customer during the original call on January 15, 2013. He was also quoted our Service Call Rate to his area and he was informed that we charge a 1 hour minimum labor fee. The customer spoke with our Office Manager, Judy during the original call. Judy has been with our company for over 8 years and is one of the most customer service oriented individual that we have ever employed. In fact a few years ago Judy was nominated for an award by the Better Business Bureau as excelling in customer service. Judy’s ethics and morals are impeccable and to insinuate that she had her hooks in the customer as he states in his comments just so she could charge him is an insult to Judy and is down right ridiculous. On January 16, 2013 the day after the customer called and as per schedule and as per request a qualified experienced service electrician arrived at the job site and made the electrical repairs. These repairs also included troubleshooting and repairing a weather proof duplex receptacle on the porch that was not working. The receptacle was replaced and a new in-use weather proof cover was installed. For these electrical services the customer was invoiced $162.00, comprised of a service call fee, 1 hr minimum labor plus materials used. On January 17, 2013 the customer was called by our Vice President Don and arrangements were made for the free estimate to be given on the other electrical work. On the 18th the estimator met with the customer to go over the specifics of the estimate request that Judy had generated with the customer on the original call. When the estimator arrived the customer voiced his concerns that he wanted the electrician that was there the day before to give him the estimate and that it was totally unacceptable that he had to meet another individual from our company for the estimate. The estimator explained that we have electricians that generate revenues for the company and perform electrical work and we have estimators and they are not the same. Please keep in mind Judy the office manager had already explained this to the customer on the original call. The estimator and customer walked the property and went over the items that the customer wanted the estimate on. On January 21, 2013 a very detailed estimate was mailed to the customer describing exactly what he wanted done and the exact cost for each item that was requested. This ended up being fairly extensive electrical work, it totaled over $2500.00. This estimate was provided to the customer Free of Charge. For the customer to insinuate that he got charged for an estimate is just not true. How the customer could misconstrue this fact is beyond me other than the fact that he did not pay close enough attention to the original conversation that he had with Judy during the original call to our office when he requested both electrical work and an estimate. Thus my comments at the being of this correspondence concerning the importance of communication and listening. In this instance we did exactly what we said we were going to do, we did exactly what was requested, we were at the customers job site exactly on time and on schedule, we repaired his electrical problems. We charged exactly what we said we were going to charge, and we provided a detailed written FREE estimate. When the customer came by our office he met with our Service Manager, Dave. The first thing the customer did was to hand Dave the invoice and state that the charges were unacceptable for a free estimate. The document that he handed Dave was the Service Order Invoice and these charges were not for a free estimate these charges were for the electrical work as requested which was to repair the porch light and repair the porch receptacle. Those items had nothing to do with the free estimate. I would assume by the customer’s harsh comments that he assumed that we were going to provide these electrical services for free or for $67.00. The customer stated to the Service Manager he knew there was to be a $67.00 service fee. The Service Manager stopped the customer and explained we do not have a $67.00 service fee nor do we have any denomination of a $67.00 charge of any kind. Readers please keep in mind that this is now the fourth time the customer has been explained how we operate and what our charges are. On the original call everything was explained by Judy our Office Manager, when the electrician visited the job site to make the requested repairs everything again was explained, when the estimator Vice President Don showed up on the job site to give the customer the free estimate everything was explained and now Dave our Service Manager was again explaining everything to the customer. Obviously the customer did not like getting the same answer from four different people, the customer grabbed the paperwork from the Service Manager and abruptly left our office. Unfortunately I was at lunch when the customer visited our office. When I returned from lunch I was immediately advised by my office staff that we had an upset customer. Everybody on our staff knows the importance of Satisfied Customers. When we have a customer that is not satisfied it is Company Policy that I be informed immediately. That afternoon I met with Judy, Don, Dave and the Service Electrician to get the full story from each individual, I then drafted an apology letter to the customer even though I felt our people acted appropriately. I wanted to try and save a customer. In the letter I again explained in detail how we operate and I apologized for any confusion or misunderstanding that we may have caused. As a good faith gesture I offered to complete the additional electrical work as detailed on the estimate at a 10% discount. This apology letter was drafted and mailed BEFORE I ever read this review on Angie’s List. Not so sure I would have made that offer had I read his review first. Members on Angie’s List this is a good example of how important it is to listen and know exactly what is to be expected. I have no doubt that Judy our office manager explained to the customer during the original call the items I just explained in this letter. I believe the customer did not pay close enough attention to what was being explained during that original conversation, he even admitted as much to the Service Electrician stating he must have misunderstood. We performed exactly as we should have and exactly as we said we would yet because of poor communications both parties are unhappy and this customer has jeopardized our good standings on Angie’s List. I am truly sorry that the customer had a bad experience with our company. The comments and conclusions that the customer voices are not factual nor are they justifiable. Angie’s List members don’t have to look far to recognize our reputation, it speaks for itself. I certainly would not allow this customers comments to have any influence on your decision as to whether or not to utilize our company for electrical service. Thank You. Jeff R. The maintenance was successful, and the report was forwarded to and accepted by DMI. Gulf Coast Electric employees were courteous and efficient. They get my "two thumbs up".
Description of Work: Four-point home inspection report revealed that the dead front cover on the electrical panel was missing, which created a safety hazard. An interior spark arrest panel was custom fabricated and installed to cover open breaker/buss spaces. This repair made the interior circuit breaker panel safe and secure.
