ac repair for downstairs unit
Description of Work: My A/C unit was not working. I used Angie's List to search for quotes, and within 2 minutes of the post, TWO different people called me from Velocity. It seems strange that two people from the same office would call so quickly, but OK, maybe they are all about customer service. They made an appointment to come out the same day. Their technician came out (Shirt half button, shirt untucked, and pretty dirty, but whatever he is working in the sun, so I don't hold it against him). After about 30 minutes, he tries to convince me that the AC unit has never been serviced (OK, I know that has been maintained). Then he says it's going to be $1049 to fix a capacitor and motor. He then says it's over seven years old (it is not), and it's about to die anyway and recommend I buy a new one for ~$6000. Velocity AC is the first quote, so I need to get more with this high of a figure. OK, how long will it take you to replace it? Do you have the parts in stock? "I don't know, sign the paperwork for the order and I'll let you know." No thank you, please let me know how long it will take and when you are ready to fix. I don't want to wait a week (and at this point, I need to get more estimates) He then calls the office for a few minutes outside and walks out of earshot (weird). He reports it's going to from a day to a week to get the parts in. The office is closed, and I'll let you know tomorrow; sign here and pay 30% upfront (Could have 25%). No thanks, I am not paying for something until I know exactly how long it will take and how long it will take you to get the parts. Fine! The part will be here tomorrow, and it will be fixed tomorrow. Sign here and pay (Wait, what; did that just happen?) No, thank you, have a nice day. FINE! Pay the Diagnostic fee of $49 he angrily demanded! He person seems potentially unstable at the point; I'll pay the $49 fee he never mentioned to this point. I think he assumed I was naive enough to pay the first quote from the first people without getting additional quotes. Epilogue: A second AC company repacked what was broken for (with a $50 part, not $450), filled both with freon, cleaned the drain lines and serviced both AC units, and cleaning the drain. The total for all service was $295, done in about 1 hour. I don't know how this company has so many positive reviews, but something seems fishy.

Not good. Velocity has been doing work on my AC. In February they recommended a preventive job which I chose to ignore. Later, they called me and recommended a tune-up or yearly check. They came to the house, recommended more preventive work which I approved. The next day, the AC broke. They told me it is because of the work I chose to ignore in February. They quoted me $6700 for a new 3 ton AC unit or refill freon plus something else for $300~.. I approved the temp band aid. When the tech was done, he said it was $700~.. He never mentioned that amount. I was not happy with him, but not much I could do since the work was already done. 5 minutes later, he texted me saying that to be “fair” he would reduce the cost to $480. Its possible that what I chose to ignore broke, but it did, coincidentally, the day after they came to touch the AC. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this company. They try to up sale you as much as possible. I ended up getting a new 3 ton unit for $4300 elsewhere.

Was advised that I needed to have the condenser and coil replaced and have 4 lbs of freon added. The repairs were estimated at just under $2300.00. I was told the air pressure should be at 120psi and that it was at 80psi, which meant there was a leak and since the lines are aluminum, they could not be cut and welded back together, which is a lie. I am familiar with MIG and TIG welding. The repairs were done today by the original installer of the unit back in 2011. He immediately checked the blower and the electric module. The blower did not work and the module was replaced. My HVAC is now up and running now and the price I paid $337.00. NEVER take Velocity"s word if you contact them.

I do not recommend this service provider. One of the worst service providers I've ever used. Initial bid was for a zoning system w/wifi thermostats, blow in insulation, new ducting, and a radiant barrier. The estimator said the radiant barrier would decrease the electric bill 40%. When I researched this myself the savings were estimated at 5-10%. I called Velocity Air for an explanation. I was told the 40% was with all services. Velocity Air would not guarantee 40% savings and they revised the energy savings to 20% with all services. I ended up only having the ducting replaced. I had paid for all services up front via a Greensky loan. After canceling the other services I had to wait 3 months to get a refund. This is because the Velocity Air Staff told me several times they would process a refund through the lender but they did not follow through after repeated requests. They also overbilled billed me duct and zoning system. I did not receive wifi thermostats as requested. The thermostats installed were baseline models with no ability for internet connection. Months later during the winter, I turned on my heat pump one cold morning before leaving for work. My 2 year old daughter and wife were still asleep in separate rooms on different floors. Velocity Air incorrectly programmed the zoning control system and this made the heat pump blow freezing cold air into my daughters room for hours, unknown to my wife. My wife discovered the upstairs extremely cold and our daughter nearly hypothermic. I called another service provider to check out the system, this is when I was told the zoning system was programmed incorrectly. I told Velocity Air about this incident. They seemed concerned, but they never refunded the service call as promised. They offered free service calls, but no one there remembers this.

John came on time and had a very professional demeanor. The only issue I have is his misdiagnosis of the issue. He believed the fan motor was dying but it was actually the capacitor. Without a second opinion his misdiagnosis would have cost me hundreds. Velocity wanted to charge me 425$ for labor and handling for a new fan motor that is still under warranty.

Tech advised AC unit had a leak and needed 9 lbs. of coolant and paid $864. Tech also advised unit needed a new coil at cost of $2100.Unit worked only 10 minutes after tech left, and tech did not answer phone when requested to return. Was without AC overnight on a hot FL night. Got 2nd opinion and advised there was no leak, system would not run due to too much coolant, and 9 lbs. of coolant added by Velocity had to be removed. Issue with unit was a valve. Velocity has refused to provide a refund for a repair not needed, and it appears I was overcharged because my AC was not running on a hot FL night. I would not use Velocity Air again!!!

Specified that I had a gas furnace and that I had tried to relight the p[ilot 3 times - the first 2 times, it wouldn't stay lit, and the third, it wouldn't light at all. Technician who came out knew very little about gas furnaces, and thought all were electronic ignition (mine is manual). While the unit is very old, it has worked fine and isn't used that much. Technician spent the entire time trying to convince me that I should replace the unit, and while I was at it, replace the A/C unit, as well. I told him repeatedly that I was not interested in doing that right now. I had a similar problem with the heater fixed a number of years ago, and it has worked fine since. Technician "tested" whether the thermostat was sending a signal to turn the unit on. He claimed he got a signal on the A/C side, but not the heat side. He offered to replace the thermostat, but said he couldn't guarantee that would solve the problem. I should have immediately called someone else, but it was chilly and I hoped that would work. It did not. I spent a week finding someone who I thought wouldn't try to sell me a new system, and who knew how to fix a gas furnace. That person found a bad thermocouple, keeping the pilot from working properly. Works fine now, and cost me less than the thermostat. Asked the new guy to test the old thermostat. He said nothing was wrong with it, and put it back up. I am trying now to return the new thermostat to Velocity A/C and get some of my money back.

Was advised "they don't make freon anymore" (Eric) so it would be very expensive, unit was 13 yrs old. Went with new Trane 14 seer 3.5 ton 10kw unit. Was advised tear out would be done Tuesday and installation on Wed (start early because it was a 2 story), and two loaner portable units were provided to help sleep in the heat. Team showed Tues to remove outside unit, and when they asked where air handler was and learned it was in the attic, they left. Next morning no one showed until after 10am and were advised they were moving their office location. Unit was installed by Wed evening and set to run all night to catch up. By Thursday morning had a sagging 6.5' x 3' water stain on the master bedroom ceiling. Company came out to adjust the tilt/level the air handler, so unit missed the float switches all night and never shut off. Was advised their drywall guy would arrive by noon Saturday - drywall guy didn't call or show on Saturday to resolve. 8 days later, blown insulation still wet, ceiling drywall still wet. FEMA, EPC all advise to have it removed and thoroughly dried before repairing. Velocity has never heard of doing it that way, advised it will dry out on its own after wet material is removed and new drywall put on top of it. Still looking to get resolved, and working with Tyler. I understand accidents happen, it all comes down to how well you recover... Would just like a dry out and repair, with a sense of urgency.

Velocity Air Conditioning, Inc Project: Repair or Service a Central Air Conditioning System We had condensation leakage in the attic. It leaked through the air vent into the living room. We called Home Advisor and were referred to Velocity Air Conditioning. When they came and looked at the situation, they said the water drain was blocked causing the water trap to run over. Knowing our system was older than I liked I told them to replace the entire system, which they did. They installed a Honeywell 8000 thermostat and we had to leave before they finished due to a Dr. appointment. and when we got back, they had left without leaving word as to what the situation was. I tried to turn on the unit and it did not work. It was getting late and I did not want to spend the night without a/c. I called their office and I talked to the manager (I let him know I was not happy and they dispatched a technician. Tim came and had the unit running and after he left, the unit stopped running again. We ended up spending the night without a/c. The next day they sent Tim out again and he said there was a circuit not operating properly. He fixed that and the unit seemed to be operating properly. The next day we had leaks again, as we had before this all began. Again Tim came out after we had ServPro working on mitigation of the leak. They said there did not seem to be a drain line installed. When Tim came he said the drain was blocked by "algae" and drained the overflow pan. I am not sure of the correct nomenclature for all this but we have not had further problems with the unit. All told, I have to say this is the most screwed up project I have had the nightmare to witness. Besides all these problems because of leakage from pan and drain tube that was supposed to be replaced we now are going to have to replace ceilings and damage in attic. They also put a hole in the duct. We called the city of Gulfport, FL because they said they got a permit and set up an inspection which has not happened. The city said they never applied for a permit or inspection.

We have contacted you in regards to the problems you are having with your new ac system and are handling the issues promptly. The existing draining system clogged 5 days after installation at least this is when we were notified. It is our top priority to stop water damage from happening, especially when the existing air conditioner we are replacing is in the attic. We are looking at replacing the draining system after all of this. It was not in the original contract and is why we did not replace at first. We had a agreement to perform a Equal AC change out in the existing location, which is in the attic and reuse the existing duct work, electrical, condensate drain line and freon piping. It is our top priority to satify the customer. Only if we could of been notified earlier of the water leaking issue.

It was a total joke. For starters, they failed to show up on time on the first day and it took them roughly three days to finally get the unit installed. They had originally insisted they could do it in one day. When they finally did install it, the unit leaked all through our ceiling and walls and I had to suffer through yet another sweltering night until they could come out and fix it. The only reason there wasn't massive water damage to our property is because we caught it so early. Then it turned out they failed to schedule the inspection; when we finally got the inspector out, the unit failed inspection. Now, scarcely a week and a half after the installation, the unit won't cool the house below 81 and nobody is calling us back. I wouldn't recommend these guys for a simple tune-up, let alone a full-on AC installation. They do very poor, shoddy work, and you'll miss a lot of days from work trying to get them to come fix all the problems they've left in their wake. Avoid them at all costs.

Company sent out "green" technician who doesn't know what he's doing. First visit, technician claimed that the unit (Goodman) is leaking somewhere. Unit is 3 years old. After failing to find leak, he gave me 2 options. 1) pump dye into the system ($500) or 2) pump sealant to seal leak ($650). I picked option 2. Mistake. Didn't know that the sealant will gunk up the AC. Made an economic choice when picking option 2 and wanted cool air now rather than wait for dye test the next day. The AC worked for 2 days and broke again. I called back for them to send a more seasoned tech. They sent one a few years older and he ran into same wall. Couldn't tell me what's wrong with unit other than to replace it. I called another AC company. More experienced technician notice the fan was running too slow on air handler and jacked it up. It worked.

I was extremely pleased with the whole process. Everything went exactly as planned and expected. They had an experienced crew of 3-4 professionals work almost all day. I did not know the company prior to using them but saw one of their ads. I had gotten several other quotes before that but they were very competitive for the quality product they offered. Chad provided several options exactly detailing everything that was included to make it easy to compare. Other companies tried to upsell me on items that were not necessary but they did not. Velocity had a very honest approach to every aspect of the project. I am very pleased and would highly recommend them.

After Tropical Storm Andrea, I noticed the house was not cooling so I called my regular A/C service who replaced the fan on the compressor and than told me that the compressor had seized and had to be replaced. This, of course, was Friday at 6:30pm and the house was unbearable with the humidity and temp outside being 90+. There was nothing more they could do for the weekend. I looked on Craigs List and found Velocity and spoke with Tyler Snyder whoc seemed very knowledgeable and helpful. He had a 5 ton ton unit that he could install Sat morning but I begged him to come that night. Despite having dinner out with his family, and having to drive to Tampa to pick up the unit, he agreed to do it. He arrived around 9PM and finished at Midnight. He was on the roof soldering in the dark which is why it took him that long, he explained. His price was more than reasonable and he did not charge for dark of night service. Everything is running better before Tyler replaced the unit. Tyler is just starting his new business and has a new baby and is doing it the right way by performing above the norm and seeking referrals which I will diligently give. My ex-husband and I used to own the largest heating and air conditioning company in South Jersey, and I am amazed at Tyler's professionalism, expertise and eagerness to develop a customer base the right way.
