We wanted to create a new 1st floor (rather than old basement) location for laundry. Required everything....hot and cold water run to the location, 220 line installed for electric dryer and vent to outside, as well as sewer pipe connection for the washer. From both the initial visit and estimate to the final actual job, everything was fantastic. Dave was efficient, pleasant, and extremely professional. Because the job required plumbing, electrical, and a bit of contractor to put all the pieces together I wanted someone who would take responsibility for the entire job. Jos. Frederick & Sons was perfect. I will say, I see in some other reviews people compliment their work but feel the price is a bit high. I disagree. Professionalism pays for itself. No "I need to run to Home Depot because I don't have something on the truck that I need". No mess to clean up. Looking at the workmanship I can tell there will be no need for a return visit. Cutoff values where they should be, vent dryer installed properly so it won't fall apart in 2 years. They completed the job well ahead of my expectations.
Description of Work: Install new washer and dryer on ground floor (had laundry in basement). Move 220 line for dryer, run hot/cold water and sewer hook up to locations, remove bricks from wall to install dryer vent

What I didn't like was her eyes. The qualities they showed was excellent. Not a whole lot for plumbing and heating provider. We got a couple of estimates and we ended up using them. They were on the ballpark. They were all pretty close.

Good - fast job; too much money for the parts and service provided though. $150.00 (which would have included the $79.00 visit fee) would have been a better cost. The technician was only here about 20 minutes total. But he did his job professionally and it was appreciated.
Description of Work: Installed tub diffuser (pull up knob on faucet) to make water come out of the shower head. Diffuser on the old Speakman equipment was non-repairable.

Service tech punctual, friendly and professional. Took him under ten minutes to diagnose the problem, then he proceeded to replace the defective part. He stayed around long to be sure that everything was working properly, answered some questions I had about the unit. The unit is working well 5 days later, no problems, got us through some hot weather.

Complete install from start to finish was a very good event Every thing from the first phone call to the end result of cool air . System was fabricated to fit our need and functions with energy cost about the same when we had four window units. Yes I am very happy with Fredrick& Sons
Description of Work: Had 4 estimates done for complete air install . they were 2nd highest but after talking to Bud the person doing the design work and presenting the estimate we chose Fredrick & Sons .They were on time as promised ,cleaned up after themselves , the whole crew were very polite and considerate of every one. I have had a agreement with them every year to check and adjust the system. They continue to show up as promised and perform work as needed. I would have them do any job for me with no problem or doubt.

Response from Joseph Frederick & Sons
Our company thrives on providing great service, great personnel, great inside customer service while trying to maintain fair costs to our loyal customers. Maintaining all the above factors with the rising health care costs, workers compensation costs, fuel cost, it's difficult for a company to stay above high waters in this industry. We pride ourselves in how we deliver great service in the world of mediocrity and we will continue to do so for another 67 years in business.

Excellent service from beginning to end. I have a very tight work schedule and they were great about setting everything up at my convenience. Office staff were courteous and an appointment for an estimate was set up quickly. The estimator arrived on time, did a thorough assessment, and took as much time as I needed to answer questions about different options. Since I was converting from oil to gas, I had a lot of questions about how to get the gas service brought in from the street (Delmarva took care of that part, and Jos. Frederick and Sons helped to coordinate), and how gas furnaces work, etc. After getting other estimates and having more questions, he was great about answering those promptly by email and by phone. The price they quoted was in the middle of the 4 estimates I got. I appreciated that they gave me quotes on more than one Carrier model but did not do a hard sell on either. After Delmarva installed the gas line outside, Jos. Frederick and Sons scheduled to come out and do the work over two days. Since it was already well into chilly weather, they were focused on ensuring that I would not be without heat for more than the one work day it would take to remove the old tank and furnace and install the new furnace. On the first day, they brought the gas line inside, installed the manifold and ran the flexible gas piping in the basement, and installed the vent pipes for the new furnace. On the next day (the only one that I was without heat), they emptied and removed the oil tank, removed the monster of an old furnace, patched the interior and exterior walls where the oil tank intake and furnace vents were, modified some duct work, and installed the new furnace, air purifier, and programmable thermostat. The lead technician explained the new furnace and thermostat, and answered all of my questions. Unfortunately, the county inspector came early on day 2, before the techs were finished with their work. That meant another day had to be scheduled for the inspector, but the project manager was great about setting that up around my work schedule as well. There were no issues identified when the inspector came. Overall, I found Joseph Frederick and Sons to be a great company to work with. They were mindful of keeping the area clean, were polite (no cussing, no loud radios to deal with), kept me well-informed, and did an excellent job technically with the installation. I am very happy that I chose them and will consider them for future HVAC and/or plumbing needs.
Description of Work: Oil to gas heater conversion, including emptying and removal of oil tank and removal of oil furnace, installation of gas manifold and piping (including tees for future use appliances), improvement of existing ductwork, and installation of new gas furnace and air purifier.

I would highly recommend Joseph Frederick & Sons!! A+++ experience. He arrived on the same day that I called, earlier than estimated. He was quick, efficient, & very professional! Also the price for the services provided was very reasonable. I am extremely happy that the garbage disposal was repaired with no additional cost. That goes above and beyond what I had expected!! Since they provide a number of services, I definitely plan on hiring them again in the near future for other projects! Thank You So Much!!!

The job was done professionally from start to finish. Our tenant was extremely pleased with the workmen, the end result and thought everything had gone very well. Details follow if you want additional insights. We are absentee landlords living 350 miles from a condo we rent in Newark, DE. A visitor to our elderly renter smelled gas and encouraged our tenant to call the gas company. Fortunately, our tenant called because the gas supply to her dryer had corroded and was leaking. This posed not only a potential fire hazard, but a possible explosion hazard as well since the dryer was in an enclosed room adjacent to the kitchen with a gas range. The gas company red-flagged the gas line. Apparently whoever converted the half-bath to a laundry used flexible copper pipe to run the gas in a tee off the stove. This was done in an enclosed wall so it was not readily accessible. Additionally, no shut-off valve was installed so the gas to this line could not be turned off separately from the main gas line to the unit. This meant no heat/cooking/hot water/dryer for our tenant during an iffy weather period. Our tenant thought it was a problem caused when a new gas dryer had been installed 18 months previously, so she contacted the installation company and asked them to correct the problem. They said it would be about 3 weeks before they could determine who the specific installer had been to send him back out to correct his mess. Tempers had flared by the time our tenant called us. Two days had been wasted, our tenant was quite unhappy and this was the first we'd heard of it. And, of course, it was a Friday. I called several plumbing companies on Angie's List, and Frederick & Sons were the only ones where a live person who knew anything about the business answered the phone. The woman, Alexis, (just like it said on Angie's List) not only knew what she was talking about she had someone out at the condo within two hours. Since, based on my tenant's description of the problem, I expected to need to install a shut off valve on the pipe coming out of the wall and replace a flexible copper pipe with an appropriate flexible gas line, I was not pleased that I was going to be charged $79 for the trip plus materials and labor for the repair...not that I really felt the charge was unreasonable, at this point I was unhappy with the dryer installation firm and wished they had shown up and taken care of things. As things turned out, I was EXTREMELY glad I called Frederick & Sons. My tenant misunderstood the gas company representative. The wall had to be broken into, 6 feet of illegally installed copper piping had to be replaced with galvanized pipe. A shut off valve was installed and then a flexible gas line was run to the dryer. This is why you should contact a licensed plumber any time you need gas work done. Additionally, a licensed plumber had to sign off on a form to the gas company so that the red tag to the unit could be removed and the gas turned back on. Frederick & Sons arranged with my tenant to return on Monday, make the repairs. Additionally, they spoke to the gas company and shortly after the work was completed, the red tag was removed from the unit. I was extremely glad to have everything taken care of quickly and to the satisfaction of my tenant. And, yes, I did call the dryer installation company and explained that while the immediate problem wasn't their fault, they should have brought to our attention the illegal piping to the dryer and refused to hook up the dryer until the problem had been corrected.
Description of Work: Replaced corroded flexible copper "gas" pipe a do-it-yourself remodeler (former owner, not me, of course!) had improperly and contrary to code installed into the walls of our condo. This pipe was leaking gas and had been red-tagged by the gas company...so no gas could be used in the unit unit this copper pipe was replaced.

It went perfectly, quickly and with no problems.
Description of Work: Replaced the refrigerator water line saddle valve in the basement (it connected to the cold water line that runs to the water heater) with an in-line valve. I had this done so I can shut off the water line to the refrigerator water/ice maker without impacting any other water service in my house. I have been a customer of Joseph Frederick and Sons for about 20 years, and two properties. They do high quality work. About a year ago they completely re-piped my home's incoming water lines (I had the old poly-butyl piping that had begun to leak) and they did a great job. Note that their prices are NOT cheap. But they are well worth the money. Their superior work always gives me more than my money's worth.

It went very well. I was satisfied.
Description of Work: They called before they arrived, as they said they would. When they came, one gentleman examined the furnace, disassembled a plate so he could see the burners, then the other gentleman turned on the furnace. As the furnace operated, the one gentleman observed the pattern of the burner flames, while the other went around the house with a CO detector. After that, they explained the operation of the furnace, how newer furnaces appear. They charged exactly what they said they would, and performed all the services I asked.

The thought of having to call a plumber in itself is distressing. The experience was probably one of the best ones I've ever had. (See story above)
Description of Work: Long time leak under kitchen sink that apparently wasn't noticed by renters before we moved in. #1) I called that morning, and they were there early that afternoon, well in the timeframe I was given over the phone. They were nice enough to contact me prior to arrival so I didn't have to miss a whole day of work. #2) We had no idea where to find the water shut off (old house, long story), Tom showed up, took us into the basement and pointed out every valve we needed to know. #3) He fixed a problem I was having in my downstairs bathroom sink while he was here. #4) He also looked at a problem I was having with the washer and was willing to fix it on the spot if it was a plumbing issue (unfortunately it wasn't), but recommended a reliable company that repaired appliances. #5) He identified an issue with the radon monitoring system in the basement (that I didn't even know I had).

Placed a call for service and was given a four hour window when someone would call back. I received the call back at the beginning of the window and a plumber was dispatched. The plumber arrived within a half hour. He repaired the leaking toilet with a simple adjustment and no charge other then the service call charge. He then replaced the leaking garbage disposal at the agreed upon price. Job was done quickly and professionally. All trash was removed and owner documents were left.

The sales representative was very helpful, actually convincing us to go with a less expensive unit than we had in mind because the extra cost would be wasted. The installation went very smoothly, including coordination with installation of the gas line from the street, which Frederick arranged. The basement was left in clean condition. The system has been in place now for several months and we are very pleased with its performance, both cooling and heating. It was very well matched to our needs. I would strongly recommend Frederick to anyone for their professionalism and quality workmanship.

The service calls were answered promptly and efficiently by knowledgeable and friendly phone operators. The plumber and electrician arrived punctually, completed the work as per schedule and estimates, and they cleaned up afterwards. The drier outlet and the fans both presented some installation issues. I was consulted as to the solutions I would prefer, and the results were entirely satisfactory. Perhaps not the cheapest, but I would certainly recommend this company, and use them again.

The AC on our 5 year old heat pump died suddenly on a Thursday. By the time I figured out it was the compressor and I wasn't going to fix it myself it was Friday night. I emailed Joseph Frederick & Sons that night along with a number of other HVAC contractors. I an email response that night. An nice looking estimator showed up when scheduled and did a reasonably job of looking over what was needed. All was fine until he gave me a rough quote on a sheet of lined paper along with a bit of a superior attitude. Every other contractor provided a formal quote. He made a point of saying that they weren't going to be competitive on price because they were Joseph Frederick & Sons and they certainly weren't. Needless to say I did not select them for the job. I have no problem paying a premium for top quality work and product, in fact, I chose the second most expensive bid, but the unprofessional quote and attitude quickly ended any chance they had of getting an $8,000 job.

We were awoken in the middle of the night by the Carbon Monoxide detector going off in the laundry/heater room. Not something you want to hear at 2 am. Good thing we had it though, because when I went to investigate the fumes were really bad. Shut down the heater and opened the windows and doors. I called Josepth Frederick & Sons (JFS) first thing in the am and they said they could be out between 10 and 12. They even offer to call ahead so I could shoot over from the office. It took the tech about 15 minutes to discover the problem. Seems we had skipped having the oil boiler cleaned for at the start of the heating season ( I blame it on the wife!). It was completely clogged with soot. The other problem is that the cat hair ( we have one that lives in the laundry room) had clogged the burner air intakes, making it soot up excessively. The Tech gave me a price to clean and service the unit. It was about 2X what we're used to paying for that, but it was an emergency call and we needed the heat back. He said it would take three hours. The Tech did a great job. He had to go get a new oil nozzle as he didn't have the right one, but still finished up in just under 3 hours. He left the area extremely clean ( it was undoubtedly a really messy job). It even smelled good when he got done, not like burnt oil. All in all I was very pleased with the service. I'd definitely use JFS again, but would try to pre plan and negotiate the price down.
