Mr. Ohi was very informative and professional. Our home is 20 years old and we were concerned about small cracks in the concrete foundation. Mr. Ohi patiently explained and pointed out various facts. Having a professional inspection eliminated a lot of anxiety about a possible structural issue with the house. The conclusion was that the house foundation is okay but the deck has problems.

I had a specific engineering question regarding vaulted roof construction. I emailed provider and received answer promptly. Very helpful.

Kamran was very kind and spent a lot of time working with me. The experience was fabulous and I recommend anyone doing a remodel to call up and have him consult regardless of what all the general contractors believe or say can be done.

Kamran was wonderful to work with. He was very responsive, thorough, thoughtful and reasonable. The sketch he provided was perfect and I never feel like he's trying to sell me more than I need. He even helped us with excellent references for carpenters, plumbers, electricians, etc. who are also very honest and reasonable. I would hire him again without hesitation.

I hired Kamran to assess the requirements to fix a poorly built column structure in my livingroom. I was told previously the structure was load bearing and with it showing signs of failure I was concerned my ceiling would come down. Kamran inspected the roof structure in the attic and the column structure in the living room and found that it was not load bearing - just poorly built. His assessment has saved me a lot of time and money. I would definitely use his services again should the need arise in the future.

The work was satisfactory and although there were mistakes in measurements we were given the opportunity to provide feedback. My issue was with responsiveness and timeliness. They are not reachable via phone or email and delayed progress by over a month. When I would get in touch with Kamran Ohi he said Jasmine Ohi had "already drafted it" and it was "almost complete." This kind of thing went on for approximately a month. After all this time, I asked for a soft copy, even of a draft, so I could move forward with my contractor, which they sent after several phone calls. In my opinion he was very rude in every encounter and made it clear he thought he was doing us a favor by taking on our small project. They refused to answer a couple basic questions I had about building codes and venting which would affect the drawings. I was rebuffed by Kamran, who said "we're not planning your kitchen for you." I guess I should apologize for hoping structural drawings would be in compliance with building codes? Finally, Jasmine Ohi claimed the plans were in the mail for another month after I had paid the final invoice. No one responded to several emails asking where the plans were until I threatened to call DCRA and complain. She claimed to have put them in the mail "twice" but given their other issues with timeliness and punctuality I have my doubts. I have yet to receive a stamped set of plans and my project is now delayed.

GREAT! I am so happy that I called Kamran for a structural review of my home's foundation. He was able to assess the situation, recommend a reasonable repair by a reputable construction firm he works with regularly (JP General Construction). Everything went wonderfully. I would encourage anyone to call Ohi Engineering Group if they would like an expert structural engineering assessment.

Mr. Ohi was extremely thorough and took his time. He also was punctual and very professional. I felt that the price that we paid for both visits and for the recommendations---was the best deal in town!!! We were extremely happy with the price! Just a great experience all around! I am an artist and do not know anything about structural engineering. After the 2nd visit, I felt more enlightened and was eager to start researching local companies in order to place our special order for 16 gauge tie plates!

The provider was punctual. He inspected all the interior walls and answered all the questions. He also provided a written certificate.

EXCELLENT! Money well spent. First, he assessed the extent of sinkage of our slab foundation, and told us it was slight and was within reasonable tolerances, and not worth the VERY HIGH costs we had been quoted by several firms to jack up our foundation. He then focused us on the real source of any problem in this area, our poor drainage around the house, and offered suggestions for how to address this, suggesting the use of qualified landscaping firms or drainage firms. Finally, he looked at problem we have with our wood siding resulting from the manner in which our deck was installed, and indicated that here we do have a serious issue. He suggested several ways to deal with the issue, and indicated that a qualified general contractor should be consulted for possible repairs. Overall, his professional expertise and recommendations will allow us to focus our efforts (and our dollars) towards fixing what needs to be fixed, rather than possibly throwing away very significant amounts of money on un-needed work. Again, this was money well spent.

Mr. Ohi immediately responded to my last-minute request (on a Saturday) for his engineering services. He was in the general area and offered to come by after his current job was complete. He kept me posted regarding his expected arrival time, which I appreciated. as I needed time to get to the location. He met me at condo; quickly and thoroughly inspected the crack in the dining room floor and surrounding floor area; and rendered his professional opinion. Because his inspection took less than the time he'd expected to, he offered to reduce his fee accordingly. I was prepared to pay the price he'd quoted, so this was a pleasant surprise. He was courteous and knowledgeable and his professional opinion was quite helpful to me in moving toward a settlement date.

He fast and very efficient. He is very reliable structural ignoring. He was available on short notice and came out exactly on time. He is very professional and also gave me a engineering report of his recommendations and we were able to pass the inspection.

Kamran showed up to take a look at my property on a Saturday morning and spent about 30 minutes assessing the structure. He asked me if there was a crawl space and I told him yes, but that I was not sure where it was. Apparently, he didn't either. I found that to be odd being as though he is a structural engineer and should know the different areas where crawl spaces are generally placed. However, we proceeded. Based on what he saw he told me that I will need to anchor one side of the building and also put support beams in the front (thousands of dollars). I thought...this is great that I have answers, now I can go to DCRA and get the proper permits that I need for the work that I need done. I paid him $250.00 for this assessment. I also decided that it would be great for his company to create my design plans for the work that would be done inside as well as outside. Fast forward a month or two, I locate the crawl space (again, he as the structural engineer could not). My mother and I met with him to go over the preliminary design plans and negotiate pricing. We informed Kamran and Jasmine Ohi that I had located the crawl space and that it was important for him to come back and take a look just to make sure that we have all of the answers needed regarding the property's foundation. Kamran stated that he would come back and go into the crawl space. It is now July 1, 2014 and I have yet to see Mr. Ohi. He was paid to do an assessment and it was impossible for him to thoroughly assess the stucture without going into that crawl space. I called and emailed as well as asked my mother to assist. Mr. Ohi responded stating that he wants money for design plans and that he never said he was going to come back out. I informed him that we cannot move forward with plans withouth knowing what is going on in the crawl space. Mr. Ohi has held up my work since. 2 weeks ago I reached out to my homeowner's insurance company and they sent out one of their structural engineers. He came out and went straight to the crawl space (without me having to tell him where it was). He informed me that my structure was solid. Settlement often occurs with older homes and that once it settles it will not settle any further. So, not only did Kamran not thoroughly assess my issue and took my money but he wanted to rip me off by having me get work done to my foundation that didn't need to be done. With that said, I have found a new company to do my design plans for the interior work. I WILL be going to the BBB with this complaint. Stay far away from this company.

Kamran was slightly late. Came to my house. Did a structural analysis. Requested that I tear out drywall in addition to drywall already removed in order for him to determine if support was missing. After removal of drywall, he returned to make assessment. In order to receive a written report I was to him the next morning. Called at approx 9 am. Message box was full. Since that time, no contact with Kamran!

We recently purchased a 100-year old row house in Columbia Heights with several noticeable issues. The floor slanted, the front porch was at an angle, and the former owner did a shoddy job on several decks. Our inspector did a thorough report but we were already near the end of our budget and needed to prioritize the repairs, especially since several contractors were suggesting rebuilding the entire house or putting in pillars on our first floor. Kamran came to the house within a day of my placing a call and went through all the problem areas from the inspector report, offering some basic ideas on how to fix. He could have provided detailed work plans for extra charge, but we just wanted the basics. About a week later he provided a report with pictures explaining any issues along with the quick suggested fixes. Extremely helpful, especially after hearing 5 different opinions from contractors about how to fix. Prompt, professional, and easy to work with.

We were preparing to remodel a bathroom. A plumber had told us that a joist had been cut in our crawl space, near the foundation. He said that it should have been supported by joist hangers or a supplementary joist, but that had not been done. A gap was increasing under the cast iron bathtub on the first floor bathroom. We felt a professional engineer's evaluation of structural integrity would advise the repair approach and document the problem. So we found Mr. Ohi on Angie's List and retained him. He told us by phone that his rate was $150/hour, which sounded ok. We recounted the plumber's report to him. Mr. Ohi arrived on Saturday, May 3, not equipped with coveralls for a crawl space inspection. He spent a very short time inspecting the suspect joist. He complained that there was animal waste in the (open) crawl space and the presence of insulation between the joists prevented a full inspection. He promised he would provide advice about repair firms, but did not follow up. We needed to proceed. After prompting, his report arrived on May 13. The report was very short -- 2 paragraphs. One was a 4-sentence paragraph essentially recapitulating the plumber's observations about a cut joist and the need to reinforce, and one 2-sentence paragraph about animal material. We learned essentially nothing new or substantive about the structural risk or remediation. Two photographs from his phone did not give a clear view of the compromised area of the joist. (Our contractor subsequently documented "before and after" with photographs that are far more accurate and useful.) After he sent the report (clearly after the inspection had occurred), Mr. Ohi emailed us text (apparently from a website) announcing the minimum charge to be $275 for an inspection and $275 for a report, and that reports take 10-12 days to complete. We re-checked the website provided via Angie's List and did not find any such fee disclosures there. Caveat emptor.

It does not matter how good his work is, if he isn't willing to travel from Annandale to Gainesville, he is useless to members like me.

It was great to have Kamran's professional expertise - worth every penny and gave us additional peace of mind.

This is the second time I used Ohi Engineering. Mr. Ohi is the proprietor, we found him to be professional, honest, responsive and competent while being competitively priced. During his initial inspection, he have us a free estimate of what the work would entail and what we could expect from his services. He required a 50% deposit and delivered the product on time. When we used his services previously a few years ago, he offered structural engineering advice for the cost of an in site consulting fee visit. I would go out of my way to use him again if I required structural engineering support.

Our house is only 3 years old but we were noticing issues that seems like it might be more than your regular settling. We contacted Kamran and set up an appointment after sending him a few pictures of the spots of concerns. So happy we did. He was very knowledgable and professional, and took the time to explain any concerns. He would tell you if it's worth it to fix or whether you should just leave it alone. There was one area of concern, but he ably explained the issue and just told us to keep an eye on it. No upsetting and just straightforward and honest. I wish there were more service providers like him in the world.

He was very thorough with his inspection and explanation. It was clear he has a lot of experience with homes in Washington, DC and was able to relate my issue to similar issues in other houses. I will absolutely hire him to do the repair work once I purchase the house. He gave me the peace of mind and clarity I needed.

I called and left a message he called me back with in a hour. We made an appoint on Saturday afternoon. He came was very helpful and determined one of the 3 walls I wanted to remove was in deed load bearing. He provide a sketch of the work needed to remove the load bearing wall. He also looked at another area we're thinking about working on in the future. He was very helpful and took his time. I would highly recommend him if you need this type of service.

My contractor removed the wall and now I have a wonderful open-island kitchen with granite. Kamran was amazing, super professional, responsive and very honest from a price perspective. He charged only 275 for one inspection, when all the other structural engineering company who gave me a quotation, would have charged 400-500 dollars only for the inspection. He charged me only once, even if he came out twice. So happy with his services, I decided to call him again to assess the possibility to place a roof-deck on my roof. He came, inspected the roof, made a positive assessement and did not charge me for the visit, saying that if we decided to move forward with the deck, he would have charged me next time when he would come to take the measurements. Kamran was so kind to provide me with the contact of another contractor specialized in roof decks, with prices much more competitive than those on the market. I am very happy with his service and will for sure contact him again every time I will need a structural engeneering advice.

Wasn't impressed with knowledge. Didn't seem to understand typical signs of basement horizontal cracking and freeze-thaw cycles in high clay soils (very common cause). In discussing carbon fiber approaches he seemed unaware that you had to fill (tuck) cracks, too, or that the carbon fiber would be subject to compression during freeze thaw stresses, a bad thing. I am on a hill and he kept throwing out ideas like underground rivers and drainage, but confirmed all was good when i made him show me where outside. Promised followup information and never delivered. Never called back. Not impressed. More like a regular home inspector. I learned 10 x more from basic internet searches but was hoping for services of a true structural engineer. Trying again with someone else. Save your money.
