It went great! Mr. Kamran responded quickly and professionally to visit a property we were selling that the buyer was trying to have us concede thousands for issues that were minor. For our piece of mind we hired Mr. Ohi who providedus with a verbal assessment which was very thorough and indicated only minor repairs were needed. When we had purchased the house the settlement cracks were already there and they had not changed in 13 years. What we did not know was that those cracks should always be filled in. It was an $800-1500 repair and the buyers had been told it could be $5000-25000 by their unprofessional home inspector, exaggerating hone inspector. Having Mr. Ohi’s evaluation, which he allowed us to videotape gave us strength to negotiate from a position of power. If we were buying a home with any suspected structural issues, we would definitely call upon him again. Very reasonable, accessible and accommodating. Wish all providers could be so professional. The key with Mr. Ohi is that he isn’t in the business to offer repair services so give so you get an independent and unbiased opinion. In short he was a terrific provider. Highly recommend.

Kamran worked in a visit into an otherwise very busy schedule, which I greatly appreciated. He assessed the issue, looking inside and out, provided a verbal assessment and recommendation, which happened to coincide with the contractor's recommendation. It was a great relief to have the verification of the issue and the best solution.

While Kamran himself is a nice man, the services offered by him and his staff are slow, dismissive, incompetent, and unprofessional. I would never use Ohi again. His company is simply not skilled nor responsive enough to manage a single family house renovation. My review below is long. If you are considering using Ohi for your renovation, you have my permission to ask Ohi for my contact information so that I can give you a more detailed review of his services. My project was at 5058 Central Ave SE, WDC I secured the services of Ohi Engineering Group in May 2016 to design drawings so that I could convert the basement into a legally permitted one bedroom accessory dwelling unit per DCRA standards and requirements. It took six months for Ohi to submit the drawings to DCRA. Moreover, the drawings were submitted improperly. Subsequently, it took 11 months from the time I contracted with Ohi until the time I received a building permit, which is three times longer than it should have taken. Below is a timeline outlining how long it took just to get the permit application filed. It does not include the three month delay to get the permit approved due to incompetence on the part of Ohi. 5-19-16 Contract signed with Ohi Engineering 5-31-16 Ohi Engineering conducts site visit and takes measurements 6-28-16 Jasmine sent existing conditions drawings. I respondI that i am away for travel. Jasmine offers to send proposed drawings. 8-31-16 Kamran sends proposed drawings. 9-09-16 Cynthia meets with Kamran at his office to review drawings 9-23-16 Jasmine sends revised drawings 10-1-16 Cynthia sends changes to drawings 10-26-16 Jennifer sends kitchen layout for review. Cynthia approves layout 11-01-16 Cynthia requests MEP drawings for review 11-04-16 Jennifer sends MEP drawings. Cynthia sends changes to MEP drawings 11-14-16 Cynthia meets with Kamran at his office to review drawings 11-28-16 Jasmine submits drawings to DCRA When I did receive drawings from Ohi, there were numerous mistakes - often the same mistakes repeatedly - such as lack of carbon monoxide detectors, missing egress window, inserting HWH tanks when I specified tankless, and inserting ducted HVAC when I specified mini split systems, just to name a few. Jasmine, Kamran Oh's daughter, was extremely rude and disrespectful when I began to ask about the delays. Six weeks after submitting the documents to DCRA I email Ohi requesting that they follow up. I also asked for access to DCRA's ProjectDox system so that I could track the progress of my application process. For weeks Ohi refused to give me access despite my repeated requests and informing them that as the property owner, I am entitled to access. I was told that Jasmine did not want to grant me access because she believed I would not pay them the balance due. In an email dated January 30, Jasmine wrote "If you believe that you are better suited to process your building permit - I will hand over the drawings to you so that you may expedite your own permit (after receiving payment for the remaining balance, minus a small portion for the permitting process)." Finally, on February 2, I was given access to ProjectDox. It was then that I learned through ProjectDox that Ohi applied for a permit but had not uploaded any of the drawings, which meant my application was incomplete, therefore DCRA was not able to process my application. When I informed him of this, he denied it, even though ProjectDox clearly showed this to be true. With drawings now uploaded, I still had to email Ohi repeatedly to ask him to follow up with the appropriate reviewers to move the process forward. Jasmine continuously replied that DCRA has 60 days in which to respond and she was not going to contact them any sooner than that. It was left to me to follow up with each of the reviewers at DCRA to ask them to move their section of the review process forward. I found DCRA to be highly responsive once I reached out to them. ProjectDox is the best thing DCRA could do to benefit project owners. It really made the permitting process transparent and showed the bottlenecks, which in this case were primarily the fault of Ohi. When I DCRA raised an issue about installing sprinklers in the house and requiring 7'6" ceiling height in the basement vs 7', Ohi was unable to research regulations to prove these requirements were not necessary. Had I relied on Ohi, I would have needlessly spent in excess of $60,000 to underpin the footers and install sprinklers, which is not a requirement on a single family home. Their ignorance of the IBC and IRC is inexcusable. I had to do the research and write the responses for Ohi to submit to DCRA. This is not rocket science, Kamran and his team simply do not care to do what they are paid to do. I could literally write pages and pages about the incapability of Ohi. However, I can feel my blood boiling just thinking about their incompetence. Save yourself the trouble and do not use Ohi Engineering Group.
Description of Work: Design and prepare drawings to convert a single family home to a 2 unit dwelling (convert the basement into an accessory dwelling unit). This consisted of drawings for lowering a basement concrete slab, developing a new egress, develop an open floor plan, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural reinforcement, building permit.

Mr. Ohi came to our home to inspect the foundation and support walls prior to us doing home renovation work. He did a thorough visual inspection and level measurements and located some small issues, but, thankfully, recommended that no foundation work be done. Mr. Ohi was pleasant to be with and knowledgeable about residential support structures.

Kamran Ohi was a pleasure to work with. He examined cracks in our cellar foundation and in an exterior wall just above ground. We were reassured that the house was not in danger, and he recommended a firm to seal the cracks. His expert opinion helped us move forward with appropriate repairs without fear that we were doing too much or too little.

I hired Kamran Ohi based on reviews on this site. I had a permit for a deck project that was awaiting drawings. From our first meeting to assess the project up to the submission of the drawings was quite professional and relatively smooth. I appreciated the very comprehensive work that was done. It demonstrated the integrity of the work and the respect the company has for the work they do, no matter how small.

Kamran was great! We were in a jam and needed a structural engineer urgently because of a home inspection report. Kamran was the only engineer we could find who was willing to show up on the weekend. He came at the time he said, and provided a thorough overview of what was wrong, which was basicallly nothing. He provided a full report before our deadline and was incredibly professional throughout! Would definitely recommend.

Kamran was easy to set an appointment with and he came out the very next day to assess whether some columns in my new home were load bearing or not. He quickly assessed that they are and took the time to walk through his reasoning, measure distance from outside walls, and go into the basement to show me where the load is transferring. At the last minute, I asked him if he could assess an additional wall for a future project and he took that on with no hesitation and took his time with this as well.

Mr. Ohi responded almost immediately to late-night inquiry via his website and made time for us the next day based on the expedited timeline of our inspection contingency. He was thorough, walked us through what he saw, took photographs, and explained his concerns clearly. He also took time, though obviously very busy, to draft an email to the sellers' realtor in advance of his formal report, which we received a day earlier than promised. His report was detailed, factual, and provided solutions to the problems he saw along with estimated costs. We were pleased with his knowledge, thoroughness, and work product.
Description of Work: Mr. Ohi inspected a home that we were interested in purchasing that showed signs of water intrusion and hydrostatic pressure buildup in the basement. He wrote a detailed report of his findings, including photos.

Mr. Ohi was highly-skilled and diligent in his review of two substantial structural matters and his proposed resolution concerning the same. We live in a brick rowhome, and the neighboring property immediately to our West made exterior alterations to his property that is now causing water to enter from his property into our home. This is namely from his painting a large brick retainer wall that holds a planter (an area in which flowers or bushes might be planted). As a result, the neighbor has created a water barrier whereby the water can not pass through, or discharge, as originally intended in that the paint has now interfered with the the original porous and permeable qualities of the brick and mortar. This, in turn, causes water to collect, build hydrostatic preasure behind the wall, and find an exit point, which, here, causes the water to penetrate the walls of our home and cause damage to our living space. This never occurred prior to the neighbor's exterior renovations. Second, the neighbor rents his basement apartment unit to a gentleman who admits to engaging in hookah and the generation of heavy airborne chemical agents with various characterizing scents (collectively, the "fumes"). These fumes are continuous; they cause harm (sore throat; swollen nasal membrane; etc.); they expose us to the risk of further harm; etc. We provided notice of the foregoing to the neighbor, who has refused to address the matter in that he has refused to either cause the fumes to stop (by requiring that his tenant stop) and he has refused to "contain" the fumes by repairing his defective/leaking wall (which causes the subject fumes to escape his leaking wall and enter the party-wall that separates our two rowhomes and thereinafter such fumes wind their way through our home, as well documented). Put differently, "but for" the neighbors defective/leaking wall, the fumes would not escape his property and enter our home. Mr. Ohi investigated the matter at hand; Mr. Ohi observed the fumes entering our home from the neighboring property; and Mr. Ohi determined that it points to defects in the neighboring property's wall and fire-rating, and, as a result, the matter requires a proper inspection of "both" sides of the subject party wall (here, a proper inspection of both properties) so that appropriate corrective action may thereafter be taken. To date, the neighboring property has refused to permit, or engage in, an inspection of his property despite his acknowledgment and understanding of the matter at hand, which is well documented in verbal and written communications to the neighbor.
