I finally decided to have a company to analyze cracks in my foundation and walls which worried me for the last two years. I called Mr. Ohi and since he was in the neighborhood close by he stopped by the same afternoon. We walked through the house and he gave detailed explanations on the issues I showed to him. - If you ever need an expert on structural design/engineering he is the one I can recommend to you. He has way more knowledge than a general home inspector.

Mr. Ohi was very professional and knowledgeable of his work. I think that my expectations for the product were a little different. Granted, I could have paid $100 extra for a written report but for what he reviewed and commented on I still think my expectations would not have been met.

I initially contacted a different firm to repair the morter in the bricks of our house, but when the repair man came to provide an estimate, he suggested that we first have a structural engineer look at it. He suggested two companies, one of which was Kamran Ohi's. I contacted both companies; they both sounded knowledgable and licensed, but the other seemed to be a bigger company itself and probably more focused on serving a company's needs rather than a homeowners' needs. The other firm's base rates were higher, also, which I would have paid if I thought I would have gotten better service, but my impression (based simply on conversations with both companies by phone) was that Mr. Ohi's service was really more what I needed. Mr. Ohi scheduled a date and time, and showed up as promised (he called because he was running a few minutes late - it was not much). He and I walked around the house, looking at the walls from inside and outside, and discussing what appeared to be going on. He made several suggestions, which I am in process of implementing. He answered my questions clearly and helped me to understand the issues and possible problems and possible solutions. When originally setting up the appointment by telephone, I had said that I wanted both the inspection and a written report, which involved an additional fee. Before he left he verified that I still wanted the written report, which I did. I paid him the entire fee as he left. He emailed the report in a reasonable amount of time. The report was consistent with what he had told me in person. Perhaps I should note that I was not in a hurry for either the on-site appointment or the followup report. Both involved several weeks, but Mr. Ohi was very upfront about the time schedule and it was fine with me. Since I know very little about structural engineering, I really don't feel that I can judge the quality of his work. (Sort of like having a doctor give you advice about whether you need surgery - how do you know whether is good advice or not?) I am assuming based on his professionalism and the logic of what he told me that his advice is of good quality, and I plan to rely on it. I think it was important to be willing to accompany him throughout his inspection and ask questions, and really try to comprehend the answers. If I had gotten just a verbal summary at the end of his inspection or the written report, without having talked through the issues with him as we were looking at the walls, I think I would not really understand what he advised. Also, information about the house/site that I had learned from the neighbors was useful in his analysis, which I would not really have expected in advance. The more information you can provide the engineer, presumably the better analysis he can give of what is likely to be happening structurally.

Needed an assessment of the structure of my newly purchased home. Kamran called me and was able make an appointment within a few days. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and had very reasonable rates. I also had Kamran provide drawings for a beam to replace a load bearing wall and several other structural changes that I will soon be making to my home. All in all my experience with Kamran was very pleasant, I would recommend him to anyone looking for a structural engineer.

Together we examined the attic structure and the basement support. He was very responsive (initially called the same day, and we met two days later). He was very professional and good about providing options (e.g. if we shorten the span of the opening, if we use 11 1/4 depth vs. 11 3/4 depth, etc). He calculated various permutations of the variables involved until the design was structurally sound and I had the result I wanted in terms of the final design layout. Prompt and very professional, as well as had the most competitive bid ($500 vs. $1200 ... which included the assessment AND the stamped drawings suitable for permit application). I will use the Ohi Engineering group again.

The structural inspection centered on my back sleeping porch, two floor addition from 1925. Cracks were developing that had me wondering if it was separating from the main house. Kamran Ohi inspected this along with the rest of the house for stability, gave me (the good) news that it wasn't urgent, although it was in fact happening, and gave me a step by step plan to deal with the problem. He was professional, very descriptive, prompt and we scheduled the appointment in the week that I called. I received the full report in 10 days. The only thing more I could have asked for is that my porch was not separating!

Went fine. I really appreciate his careful explanation of the problem and the proposed solution. I had started with no clue as to what was needed, so his service helped me significantly. His explanations and sketches were very helpful. I did not understand, however, that he would also identify contractors for me, nor did he mention that I'd still have to pay for a formal structural engineering report (I assume) to get a county permit. I believe he took seriously my explanation of limited financial resources, but I think his proposed repairs would almost certainly cost more $ than I have, and without question would do so if any further problem was found underground.

i hired kamran december 2008 to do inspection on my basement, he did look at the basement, look around the house, explained the cause of my problems, and gave me appropriate recommendations on how to fix it, he helped me look for a company to fix the walls at the cheapest price, i received excellent communication, and even though his inspection is done, he is still communicating with me and helping me out with no additional cost. it is already february 2009 and still i always get a reply on an email or an answer if i call him... this person is really concerned on helping others at a fraction of what other people will charge you. if you have problems with your foundation, water problems on the basement, bowing of walls, cracks on your foundation. he is the person to go to. he is not associated with any contractor so every service he does is just for the benefit of the customer. kamran ohi, structural engineer 703 401 5682, kohi1@cox.net i can testify any time for this person. you can call me at 3016489032 or email me at rexvillarivera@yahoo.com.
