I tried to use an Angie's List Big Deal to get some drywall repaired. I know they are a plaster company, however in the fine print of the deal it mentioned that the customer was responsible for the cost of drywall and sheetrock. Additionally, some of the Angie's List reviews refer to drywall repair, therefore I assumed they provided this service. I called to schedule an appointment, but they explained they did not work on drywall. They were nice, but told me they could not refund my purchase. I contacted Angies List who promply refunded and they found me another big deal for drywall. So, all in all, they seemed like nice people, but they do not repair drywall, despite the reviews on Angies List!
Description of Work: I wanted them to repair drywall, however, they do not provide this service.

Mr. Cook arrived a little later than we expected but had called earlier to let us know he was running behind that day. He worked quickly and acted professionally to repair the upper part of our bedroom wall that was damaged due to a leak in the roof. He also plastered over a wall that had been badly damaged by the previous owner by shellac decorations (we couldn't figure out another way to cover over this wall without leaving behind very visible marks under the paint). The work we needed ended up costing additional money beyond the coupon we purchased and we were disappointed with that, but felt that the price Mr. Cook gave was reasonable and fair. He did great work and cleaned up afterwards, we were very pleased.

Everything was fine. I purchased an Angies List coupon for drywall repair. The estimator charged me another $50 on top of my Angies Liost coupon because the work would take more time than what was listed as part of the coupon. However, when the workman showed up he spent no more than about 15 minutes doing the work. I don't think I should have been charged the extra $50 but this is DC I suppose! The work was great, clean and professional.

The stucco work was done professionally & from what I can tell, excellently. After stucco was completed, there were still problems with water damage to inside walls; the source of the leaks had to be continually uncovered, which prolonged completion of inside work. I had to get a roofer to take care of one part of it. In another instance, an electrician did work on my AC unit which was dripping onto the window below & causing water damage. Cook's workers were friendly, competent, and cleaned up well. For the inside work, they had to keep coming back b/c water was still getting in. The final work was completed many months after it was initially begun b/c of how long it took to get the other problems resolved. Mike, the lead worker, was excellent at both stucco work & inside plastering.

overall it went awesome. They were extremely quick to come and evaluate the work to be done, and then scheduling the actual work was very quick also. as a matter of fact, the owner evaluated the work on a tuesday anf they came to do the work the very next day! quality of work was superb, pricing was very reasonable. I would recommend this company without reservation.
Description of Work: After some HVAC and electric work, there were 6 medium to large holes in the drywall that needed to be repaired. The owner came over first to evaluate the job abd explained very well to me how plaster to fix the walls would be a faster and less expensive way to go than patching with drywall. there were a couple spots that were very tight to get into and some without anything behind to anchor drywall too so the plaster patching was the way to go. the technician that came to do the actual work was prompt, professional, extremely neat and did a first class job with the patches. after priming and repainting, you cannot tell where these large patches had been because he did a superb job blending everythign together with the existing wall.

Unfortunately, we were unable to have the work performed. Our interactions went just fine with him. He was very nice and apologetic and let us know that unfortunately we were outside of the area he was able to service. He also let us know the process to get our money back since the work could not be performed.

I purchased a Big Deal coupon that I eventually requested a refund for. The coupon was for $500. When they arrived the representative was reluctant to do anything for just $500, saying that he would only accept the coupon if I gave him a considerable amount of work (in the $2000 range). I told him that I didn't want to do any big jobs; and that he had to honor my Big Deal coupon. He began to complain that he had a "whole stack of coupons" for people who only want $500 worth of work; and he couldn't make any money that way. Needless to say, I didn't use the company and requested a refund for my coupon. Buyer beware.

I called Mr. Cook originally to ask more details about the Angie's list deal available and how much time what I needed done would take. I called after hours and left a message, not even an hour later, I got a call from Mr. Cook. He explained it would really help to see the work needed and the type of plaster we have at the house. He was available the following day and came out on time for an estimate. We made an appointment for 2 days later. The tech, Mike I believe, came out on time, was respectful and looked through all the work required. He started with the holes and was done in almost no time. It looks great! Then he spent several hours fixing cracks in the ceiling. My husand watched and he gave him some tips in case my husband tried to fix plaster jobs in the future. He also cared enough to ask what we were going to do in the living room and what kind of paint we planned to use. He volunteered that flat paint is best to use on walls that have imperfections (our home was built in 1952, it's not perfect and we know that). He brought covers for the furniture and swept up after the job was done. There was still dust in air but that's not something I think he could have done anything about. He did a great job, he saw cracks we didn't notice and fixed those too. It was a job well done and a great value. I would recommend them-quick, easy to work with, respectful, professional, good people overall!

Mr. Cook followed up immediately on my initial call, came out to give me an estimate that night, and was able to start just a couple days later. Our walls and ceiling had pieces of plaster falling off and cracks in various places. Cook made repairs to all the different places. The repairs looked very professional and solid. We wanted to give the room a new, finished look, so a couple days later (giving the repairs time to dry) Mr. Cook's son came and took care of the painting. We supplied the paint. Antoine spent from morning til night painting every detail of the room, including the ceiling. This was no rush job. It looks wonderful! He was very courteous and professional. Both times the crew cleaned up really well. I would definitely recommend Cook & Sons.

The overall job was done great! My old house is new again. I called several people to do the job but each wanted to replace the plaster with drywall, which was not what my husband and I wanted. I called Mr. Cook and he came the next day and took pictures told me what he would do. He sent me a proposal that afternoon. He told me he could start in a couple of days and he did..on time! I was very impressed that they showed up everyday on time ready to work. He warned me it would be a lot of dust and it was but now I have a beautiful home that everyone in my family loves. Once the plastering and painting was finished he sent a young lady to help clean up the dust. I would us him again in a heartbeat. It was costy but worth the money! Thanks guys for a great job!
Description of Work: My ceilings and walls on the main floor and 2nd floor hallway were in need of plaster repair. The ceiling was removed and replaced with plaster. The walls were also repaired. Once, they completed the plaster work they painted all repaired areas. The total job took about 2-3 weeks. MAJOR WORK!

Mr. Cook failed at being a professionally businessman.
Description of Work: An e-mail was sent to Cook & Sons June 3 regarding the repair of a bedroom and closet ceiling in my home. I also was interested in numerous cracks on the walls of other rooms. After a week I did not receive any communication from the business and called them on the phone, June 13, reaching a receptionist. The receptionist stated that Mr Cook would be able to do an estimate that evening at 7PM. Mr. Cook arrived at 7PM, walked around my house, stating that he did work at the White House, what would be the best possible solutions for fixing the plaster in the different areas, and a verbal estimate of the cost. I escorted Mr. Cook to the front door stating that I look forward to receiving his written estimate of repairing the water damaged ceilings and the cracks due to the settling of the house. As of today July 10, 2012 I have not received a written estimate from Cook & Son.

Response from Cook & Sons LLC
Member: I sincerely aplologize for the delay in receipt of the estimate and the bad first impression of my company. The document was prepared on June 15th and I expected my office to have it out to you on that day. Not sure why it was not sent until July 11th. I spend most of my time in the field and I rely on my inside help to get these things done for me. Again, I am truly sorry for this mishap.

After purchasing the coupon, we contacted Cook & Sons repeatedly and left messages each time. No human ever answered the phone. It took them weeks to call back. Once they did call back, we arranged a service appointment -- they did not show up. We called and, once again, had to leave messages. We arranged another appointment and when the gentleman arrived, he walked into the house and said, "We cannot do this. The Angie's List was the worst thing we ever did. They did not write the coupon correctly." He went on to tell me that rather than honoring the coupon, it would cost us $400-$800. He then said he would call me that afternoon with a specific price quote. He never did. Needless to say, we went elsewhere with our business.

I was very satisfied with their work. They did a great job. There was nothing I disliked. I liked their promptness of his response and the timeliness of the work that he did. I liked the price and quality of the work. He was just a pleasant person to have in my house because he was so polite and friendly. I thought that they could never go wrong because his was exceptionally good and hard to find someone who could still do the plaster work.

The job done was amazing. Mr. Cook was accommodating to my schedule and came by after 6pm to give me an estimate. Two days later he was there ready to paint. I selected and provided my own paint. He did the job in one day, two coats of paint for each wall. Clean lines, no splatter on the baseboards, and he even got behind the alarm system box. Patched the holes from the old curtain rod and everything looks fresh and new. The cleanup was great and his office staff couldn't have been nicer. Just an overall masterful job.
Description of Work: The job was painting the four walls and ceiling of the living room (including an accent wall) plus the small foyer at the front door. The job required painting three colors as well as patching holes where I took down the curtain rod over a double window.

good company. Would recommend for professionalism and good work that I've seen elsewhere.
Description of Work: We asked for an estimate to plaster the exterior of part of our house. The bid was expensive enough (I don't remember the figures) that I ended up going with cedar shake that I did myself. But I have seen their work and it is very good. Mr. Cook is a good Master Plaster Mason who does a lot of work for the Capitol restorations. The problem is that his Capitol work is at night, so days get a bit blurry for him. A one week project took about one month, and since it is a highly messy job, it was very disruptive. He gave us a very good deal for the work because it was a slow period, but then his first crew did not show up on time. They tended to want to work in late afternoon into the late evenings, which is problematic in a residential neighborhood for many reasons.

They were great. They were awesome. I would give them an A. I thought that the quality was very well done. I thought that the estimate was reasonable. They were able to do it really fast. They came out the day I asked them to. Then, 2 days later they were able to do the work, which was what we needed. They were efficient and cleaned up everything really well, as well. There were no problems. I would recommend them to people.

Mr. Cook arrived promptly to perform the estimate on the work I called him about and also let me know that certain cracks I didn't believe could be repaired could, in fact, be fixed. My correspondence with him via email regarding the estimate and scheduling the work was punctual and professional. Cook & Sons staff arrived promptly, behaved professionally while working, completed the work on time and at a very high level of quality, and cleaned up when they were finished. I would not hesitate to hire Cook and Sons again.

Cook and Sons were outstanding. It's easy to find drywall repairmen--they are a dime-a-dozen. Finding a company that does plaster repair and skimming is much more difficult. I took a chance on Cook and Sons based on the positive reviews on Angie's List. The work was top-notch and their price was reasonable for the skill and quality of the plastering. Antoine Cook was very pleasant to deal with and his workmen were prompt and cleaned up after the job. I would *highly* recommend them to anyone needing professional plasterwork or repair.

Amazing job! First, Mr. Cooke called and came over to view the job on Friday afternoon. After looking at all the work to be done he presented a very fair price and several suggestions on other little spots that needed to be corrected. When he said he could have a crew there the next morning (NEW YEAR's EVE!) I said "yes". He then emailed me a proposal/contract with pictures of the aread that needed work. They were to arrive at 8:00 a.m. and they arrived at 8:00 a.m. He and his crew covered my floors, covered all my furniture and began work. Within a couple of hours I could not believe how great the place looked. I had put this job off for a few years because I didn't think I could find a good plaster guy - OR - afford one if I found one. They worked all day on NYE - and came back on Monday morning - again right after 8:00 a.m. They finished all the work - the walls are perfect and I am so excited about the difference. The previous owner had covered part of the wall going up the stairs with CHEAP paneling. It looked bad and was cracked....and I knew it was covering up damaged walls. Now - I can paint the entire wall the same color and it will make the room look so much bigger and up to date. He even arranged to bring over a carpenter to repair some broken baseboard and trim along the stairs. That was an additional charge to the carpenter - but very minimal compared to what I know other carpenters charge. At the end of two days - my rooms looked great - and I was so happy that I had the work done. I had looked at those messy.damaged walls for six years - but hadn't hired anyone....I AM SO HAPPY now that the work is done! Total difference. Very fair price. Prompt on time. Best of all - Mr. Cooke and his crew were a pleasure to work with. They took care of my home, were very courteous, cleaned up all the areas they worked in - AND cleaned where they mixed the plaster outside. True professionals! Wish I had more work for them to do!
Description of Work: Cooke and Sons performed plaster repair in several rooms of my home. They fixed cracks, removed some old paneling that was covering up damaged plaster along a stairway from years ago, sanded and repaired a bathroom ceiling and walls that had blisters from water damage, repaired a ceiling and wall that had a messed up corner due to a bad leak where big chunks of plaster had fallen out, and removed badly blistered/bumpy plaster around a window that had also been damaged due to leaks. The house is an old home on Capitol Hill that was built in the late 1890's.
