Description of Work: I needed to have plastering done around an electrical box that had been put into my dining room wall. We made an appointment to have it done on 12/18 at noon. I specified that I was teleworking, so this was perfect because it could happen during my lunch hour. At 12:30, no one had arrived. I checked my phone and found several messages asking if I was home. I contacted them and said I was waiting for them, but had been working and was not looking for messages from them. Mr. Cook decided to go somewhere else during our appointment time because he "didn't want to drive all the way out" to my house if I wasn't there. This didn't make sense since I stated I would be there working and since we had agreed on that time and date. I eventually found someone else who completed the project for a fraction of the cost.

Do not recall being told that the customer was "teleworking" from home. We believe a time and day was suggested but not confirmed. So, if memory serves us correctly, the suggested day arrived and we called before heading out to confirm customer was home before driving the distance. No response from the customer, a couple of other calls were made, no response. Sorry that a connection was not made, we try to be very punctual for our appointments. Cook and Sons, LLC

5/1/2016 Thank you for the review, but it was 5/5/2013 when the estimate was given it is now 5/1/2016. I can surely guest that part of the $800 was the plumber's fee, for we do not do plumbing. Cook and Sons, LLC

The room was transformed in two days. A difficult space is now sealed, clean, and workable. The workers were considerate of the site that a tenant occupies, and their clean up was thorough. I would recommend them to anyone who needs plastering work.
Description of Work: I met Mr. Cook through an Angie"s List special and was immediately impressed by his directness, knowledge and professionalism. He described the work and a few months later I was able to clear a very tight utility room for his workers. With Mike at the helm, they replastered the existing space. The small room was a mess, with most of the walls crumbling or already collapsed to the outside brick. They had to work around all the pipes for the boiler, outside water source, washer , dryer and hot water heater.

I had 3 estimates, Cook and 2 others which were lower but the lower ones only wanted to replace the finishing plaster and paint. Knowing that the rock lath in the wall was damaged, I went with Cook. I'm glad I did because they are real plasterers, not painters who can do a bit of plastering. I feel they did the repairs the "proper" way and not just covered up damage. I called Mr. Cook (the "son" in Cook & Sons). He came over the next day and gave an estimate on the spot. We talked about smoothing out the patterned ceiling and include painting (I'll call this the "Big Job") as well as only repairing the plaster. He followed up with calls but was patient as I had other estimates done. I decided to do just the plaster repair work. We set a date, he showed up with the workman, Michael, on time. Michael was impressive. He was focused on his work and really knew his craft. He was polite, hard working and didn't seem to get irritated as I looked over his shoulder and asked questions. He tore out the old plaster creating a lot of dust, re-plastered and tried to match the swirl pattern in the ceiling. You can see where the pattern changes but I can't expect an exact match. He cleaned the place up pretty well. I got the Angie's List coupon for $500 worth of work for $99. I was hesitant to get this as I figured that any estimates would be somewhat arbitrary. It was. The repair work alone was estimated to be $900. The Big Job was $2300. When asked whether the coupon was included, he said that it was good for "sq. footage work only" and a discount more than the value of the coupon had been applied to the Big Job. The coupon was not valid for repair (even though it says so). This, I felt was a little misleading, as this was not printed on the coupon but I figure that $99 was the fee for finding me a good plasterer. I will just follow my intuition on future coupon purchases. Lastly, when asked about warranty, he said that they do not warrant repair work but assured me that this wouldn't be a problem. All in all, I am very happy with the work and price, wary of buying another Angie's List coupon.
Description of Work: There was water damage to plaster walls and ceiling of a 1961 house due to a roof leak. The wall is made of rock lath and plaster while the ceiling is all plaster. Vertical blinds had fallen down from the wall as the rock lath was weakened. The plaster and rock lath were removed from the wall all the way down to the furring timber and replaced with metal lath, brown plaster and finishing plaster. There were 2 spots in the ceiling with water damage. One only needed the finish coat replaced and the other required full removal down to the lath. The ceiling also has a swirl pattern.

Cook & Sons was able to perform the work the day after Mr. Cook appeared for the estimate. It initially took a few days to hear back from the company since they were busy responding to Angie's List "Big Deal" inquiries. The crew was professional and courteous. They were meticulous in their work, both in the repair and in the clean up. They used drop cloths and plastic sheeting to catch debris and dust. When a room was completed, they swept and mopped the area. The work was completed in one day, and I would definitely recommend them for their plastering service.
Description of Work: I had plaster removed and replaced in our 1929 home. The work was performed in two bedrooms, the dining room, the basement stairwell, kitchen, and behind one radiator. Some of the plaster that was removed was due to water damage caused by Hurricane Irene. The price I paid reflects the discount I received through Angie's List "Big Deal".

Cook and Sons was the first contractor we contacted--Mr. Cook was able to provide an estimate within 24 hours and schedule the work quickly. His crew was quick, clean and thorough. In addition to the repairing the plaster we had the room repainted. There were some minor miscommunication with the office staff about when the painting would be completed once the plaster repair had set, but as soon as Mr. Cook was aware of the confusion he called me directly to resolve the issue. I would definitely hire Cook and Sons again.
Description of Work: We hired Cook and Son's to repair damage to plaster in our master bedroom caused by an exterior leak, paint the master bedroom and repair a minor crack in plaster in our office.

Overall, he was good. He was the first to respond to my request for an estimate, and came out the next day to assess the work. I had an estimate within 24 hours of his visit. Ultimately, I chose another contractor who could perform a wider range of services so I could (1) avoid dealing with the scheduling complications that come from using different companies and (2) negotiate a more favorable rate.
Description of Work: I was collecting estimates on repair jobs to get done at my house. The first job being to re-plaster a ceiling that was about to collapse and repair minor plaster cracks caused by settling and plaster damage cause by water.

One wall that had the large crack and the plaster filled in.... already had the crack (which is longer than 8 inches) re-appear 3 days after the work was completed. One wall that had added plaster - worker decided not to go up to the ceiling (2 inches) so my carpenter could add the ceiling molding later. I thought it made sense, so I didn't argue. However, my carpenter came 4 days later and told me that it would have been better to have the plaster go all the way up to the ceiling. I sent a nice email to the company just as a polite "fyi", so he would know this for future work that would be similar. The owner of the company was very polite, as were the two workers. The promptness was impeccable.
Description of Work: Remove plaster from 1 entire wall that had cracks. Cut out plaster on 2 other walls and filled in with new plaster. Added plaster to a wall that was not even.

I contacted Cook and Sons via email on a Sunday. Early the next Monday morning there was an email waiting for me. It was the first contact from any company on Angie's list. Mr Cook came to give me an estimate within two hours on that Monday. He said he would be there at 9:30 and he was actually 10 minutes early. He gave me an estimate which was extremely fair and said he could do the job the next day at 3:30. He showed up early again with another worker and the finished the job in three hours. The job looks great and they took extensive time to clean everything up. I am definitely going to use Cook and Sons for additional work I need on my home. I give them my highest recommendation.

Avoids accountability, he always passed me off to someone else. I would call to talk to people and it seemed every person that I talked to was fired the next time I called in. He seemed to have issues working entire days, they would show up at 3 and leave at 7. After the deadline had passed, his assistant/accountant stepped up and she stayed there for the next two weeks trying to finish things up. She was just trying to make things right, which turns out is too late.
Description of Work: He came out to fix doors, repaint interior, install crown molding, install bathroom trim kits, resurface doors and varnish them, brown coat the chimney, install kitchen hardware, closet shelving.

The job turned out to be larger than either the contractor or ourselves initially estimated. Repairing the stucco was a more extensive job the we realized. The initial estimate, therefore, was low and we ended up paying substantially more than the estimate. Having said that, I think that it was a fair price for the work that was done. The workmen did a good job cleaning up most days. However, three weeks after the job was completed they have yet to come pick up their ladders from our lawn.
Description of Work: We had extensive stucco repair done on the exterior of the house and then we had the stucco and trim painted. The stucco repair was extensive. Large areas of stucco were completely removed and replaced. It was a big job.

The company called the day before to confirm the appointment. On the first day of service, the person performing the work arrived on time and prepared. He explained the steps involved and began by laying drop cloth so he did not track plaster on my floors. He began the work, taking a few hours to complete this first step. Once he was finished, he cleaned up and left the bathroom spotless. The next day he followed the same routine. On the last day, he finished the work, explained what he had done and explained how long it would take before I could paint the walls. He cleaned the bathroom and hallway where a little dust had fallen while he was gathering his belongings. I am very happy with the work and intend to use the company again.

The company returned my call within a day & set up an appointment for an estimate that same day. Especially helpful was that the estimator was able to come by in the evening after work. He gave an estimate, which I thought was fair. We tentatively scheduled an appointment to have the work done, pending a written contract. Before the work date arrived, I found I needed to reschedule; the company accommodated my request. I had to remind them to email me a copy of the contract, but did so after my reminder. They showed up a tad late on the work date, but the office called me to let me know that the workmen were delayed. When they arrived they got to work promptly and finished the job in about the time they said. When I got home that night all the work looked to have been done well though one seam clearly showed wall repair tape and I noticed one or two minor spots that had been missed. Still, overall it was a decent job. They cleaned up after themselves and left no plaster mess.
Description of Work: The company repaired two rooms with damaged ceilings and walls caused by a leaky roof. The primary concentration was along difficult ceiling seams.

THE COOK AND SONS TEAM WERE HIGHLY SKILLED PROFESSIONALS WITH GREAT ATTITUDES AND WORK ETHICS. THIS IS A MESSY PROCESS AND THEY WERE INCREDIBLE IN CONTAINING AND CLEANING UP THE MESS WHEN THE WORK WAS COMPLETED. THE PLASTER WORK WAS EXECUTED BY HIGHLY SKILLED CRAFTSMAN. I WILL HIRE THEM AGAIN WHEN IT COMES TIME TO PAINT OUR HOME. I HAVE HAD OTHER "PLASTERERS" PATCH MY HOME AND MR. COOK'S TEAM SHOWED ME WHAT REAL PLASTER WORK IS ALL ABOUT. THE WORK IS PRICEY BUT SO VERY WORTH IT!

COOK'S TEAM CAME TO THE RESCUE WORKING LATE INTO THE EVENING TO DEMO THE DAMAGED CEILING AND WALLS AND RE-PLASTER THEM AS ONLY TRUE MASTER PLASTERERS COULD DO. They did very good work and were very responsive. They new stucco looks exactly like the original pattern. The only concern I have is their price. I think I was over charged, but it was probably my fault because I didn't get any other estimates and when we discovered an additional problem, rotted framing underneath the stucco, I had them do it again without any other quotes. So, I blame no one but myself. I would get additional quotes for future jobs to compare prices and then if there was a significant difference, I would try to bargain them down, but their overall quality of work was excellent.
Description of Work: We have a 30-year old Tudor house with a cement stucco exterior and faux stucco interior. We had cracked stucco panels on the outside that had to be replaced, one inside panel needed to be replaced. When done, they washed and repainted all the exterior stucco and matched colors for the new interior panel. When the exterior stucco was removed to fix, we found rotted framing from prior water damage, so they had to tear that out and reframe those areas before proceeding.
