Description of Work: Chris Calkins and his workers did wiring for outside lights. We had new siding put on our house. They disconnected service so the siding contractor could finish his job. We also purchased two bathroom exhaust fans from them and they installed one of them. The cost was much higher than discussed and they did less work then we had discussed. Chris charged us for about double the amount of time they were here and charged labor for more workers than were here. He also charged us for travel time, which never was discussed. We live in Jewett City and they came from Waterford. They were here 3 hours and charged us for 4 1/2 hours. That is a lot of travel time! I did call and discussed our dissatisfaction and our price was adjusted to $l,086. This was still more than we expected since not all the work was performed that we had originally discussed. Chris said he didn't remember what was discussed and didn't have our e-mail, but when it was time to bill us the bill came by e-mail almost immediately. We had requested a written estimate, but he would not give us one. He just said he would treat us right. Because his name was given to us by our contractor, whom we were completely satisfied with, we made the mistake of not pursuing the issue and getting the written estimate. Now we will always get a written estimate from everyone no matter what the job. The next day Connecticut Light and Power Company came because they saw that we were having work done and they did an inspection. (We did not request this inspection. I asked why the inspection and was told the inspector just observed we were having work done and he just stopped by to inspect.) The inspector said Caukins was in violation because they did not get a permit before doing the job. They also mentioned that the job was poorly done. The inspector asked for the name, address, and license number of the electrician, which I gladly gave them. Needless to say, I was very dissatisfied and would never use them again or recommend them to anyone.

Description of Work: There was miscommunication on my part when I mane the initial call. I needed to know if my oven was fixable for a reasonable rate or should I look into a new one. Mr. Caulkins informed me that his company dealt more with the actual hard wiring of an oven and mostly larger electrical projects. He was however familiar with the error light my oven was displaying and reviewed all the repairs I had already made. He was kind enough to understand I couldn't afford a new one and I told him I would be looking on craigs list. He was kind enough to offer his services of picking up the used one for me if his trucks were in the area, remove, install and take away the old oven when I found a new one. This was above and beyond his area of work but at that meeting I because a loyal customer. He's the real deal folks. A down to earth, sincere business man.

Description of Work: Installed three ceiling fans and replaced the lighting fixture over the work bench in the basement. I talked with several other electricians about my aesthetic concerns, not wanting a lot of the wiring to be noticed. Chris Calkins got my concerns from the moment he came to view what needed to be done. One fan had to be very high up, one very low and one placed in a fairly awkward space between two beams. There is no visible wiring and the placement of the fans is perfect. To me it was magic, and he and the men who helped were all extremely pleasant, and by the end of the day, all of the furniture that needed to be moved, was back in place and the house cleaned of all signs of the work that was done that day. I can't recommend Calkins Electric highly enough!

Description of Work: We lost our overhead lights in our kitchen and our outdoor back yard floodlights. Chris responded immediately to a message we left and stated he would be able to come a few hours later. He arrived punctually, and proceeded to investigate the problem. It took him awhile but once he determined the issue he rectified the problem in a short period of time. A short in wiring resulted in our lights receiving 220 volts rather than 110. He was professional and we felt very reasonably priced for the service provided. We would recommend Calkins Electric to all.

Description of Work: Add dedicated electrical outlet for air conditioner; test old exterior lights, then replace same. Helped us obtain an extra exterior light while they were here--called supplier for us and my husband picked it up on his way home. Since the other two were bad, we decided to replace the third so all would match. Very pleasant and professional guys.

Description of Work: I phoned to inquire about doing a rather large electrical job and the person that answered took all of my information down. He said he was on a job but would contact me on the next business day. He never called back. I'm glad that the economy is so good that you can choose to ignore work offers.
