Carl Guerco was outstanding. He answered calls immediately, stayed in touch about scheduling an estimate, was very gracious and understanding when I forgot our first estimate appointment, and rescheduled for the very next day. Once he saw the driveway, he not only indicated that the driveway was in rather good shape; he offered tips to my neighbor, who shares the driveway, on how to use his tractor to hone the condition of the driveway himself. Carl was knowledgeable, frank, and incredibly gracious. Also, he did provide an estimate, just in case we wanted him to do the work, and it seemed reasonable.
Description of Work: He provided an estimate but offered tips to my neighbor about how we might handle the job on our own!

See Above. Very Pleased with how provider completed job early and exactly on budget. Would recommend provider to anyone.
Description of Work: Provider tore up our old driveway, removed old driveway, brought in processed stone, dug a 50' drain trench and installed 4" corrugated drain pipe. Then after driveway settled awhile he compacted and put down asphalt. Drive way and drain look wonderful!!!! We had 3" of rain several nights ago and the drain worked great.
After our first meeting and signing the contract the crew showed up right on time. Weather stopped them for one day tearing out the old driveway but that was no big deal. Once it was out and with the weather on our side the crew installed a commercial quality full width drain in front of our garage doors. It amazed me how much time they spent getting it "Just Right" for draining plus at the right height for the layer of blacktop. Once it was in, the base had to settle for a couple weeks which we had planned on. I felt sorry for the crew because after the two weeks passed Mother Nature came to visit. Every time, and I mean EVERY time the plan was to install the driveway it rained. Well after 5 weeks of waiting we got a break and they showed up. I couldn't be happier with the job. Carl went so far as to have me drive my Chevy Volt with its very low chin air deflector up to the beginning of the driveway to make sure it was "Just Right" and didn't drag but was still high enough to stop water from running down from the street. I can't wait for my wife to get home and see how great this looks.

We met with 3 contractors (all personal referrals) and received 3 quotes. Guarco Paving stood out for so many reasons. The main reason he even made it to the the top 3...my friend said, "When you get a new driveway from Guarco, you may pay a little more but your driveway will stay looking NEWER longer then anyone else". The first guys quote was really high, second guy much more reasonable and Guarco Paving came in at the same ballpark as second guy. So, all in all, Guarco pricing was great. After meeting with Carl and discussing our job, it was clear this was the company to hire. Carl was extremely prompt and met me the day I called. Infact, he always answered his phone. He really knows his business. We had just removed a huge tree stump in the new turnaround area and he was upfront in telling us that we were going to need extra fill before he paved to prevent cracks when the earth settled in the area the stump was taken out. The day his crew showed up they got things done quickly and efficiently. Our new driveway is just beautiful. It survived the winter extremely well. Without hessitation, I would recommend Guarco paving to all my friends and neighbors.

We found Carl and his crew to be very conscientious and always on time. This was a big job that involved paving between two buildings with complex drainage issues. He laser checked everything and clearly explained how the drainage system would work. It is draining exactly as he said it would. If we had any concerns during the process he would address them immediately. He always returned our phone calls promptly. He did not accept (final) payment until he was sure that everything was to our complete satisfaction. We found Carl to be very easy to work with and would recommend him and his crew without reservation.

The work began a little later then originally planned, but that was probably due to circumstances that were uncontrollable. The removal of the existing driveway and preparation of the base material was done very quickly and was very well done from I could tell. The paving was done over 2 days. The owner and his crew worked diligently on a tough driveway. My driveway is about 400 feet, up hill with 2 curves; difficult for the spreader and the roller. Much of the sides of the driveway were done with hand compactors. My main concern is that in some areas the asphalt surface is not as tightly compacted as I think it should. In addition, in some places the driveway appeared to be less then the contracted thickness(however in some places it appears to be more) and thus I was worried about it's integrity. I expressed my concerns to the owner and he assured me that come next spring the driveway will be fine. I'm not a driveway expert so I'm depending on the owner's integrity that he will stand by his work and return and fix any issues that may arise in the coming years. I believe he will.

Carl Guarco is a very experienced and knowledgeable guy who has been doing this for a long time. He was very friendly from the fist contact and, if I recall correctly, came out to see me the same day that I called. He examined my situation carefully, then described in detail what he would do. He was able to provide an estimate on the spot, and came back with a contract within a few days. He said that it would probably take two days of work for the job--first to remove the old asphalt and put down the new base material. Then he needed to allow enough time for a sufficient stretch of dry weather before he could come back to pave. So the overall time frame in the contract was a month. This was fine, by the way, because the appearance and feel of the driveway was fine with just the base material on it (much better than the old paved surface with it's holes, mud, bumps and gullies}. And using it that way actually help compact the base material. Between Carl's schedule and the weather, a few extra weeks were required before the paving day, and that's the only reason for the "B" on punctuality. But the truth is that it was really no issue for the reasons I stated above. The finished driveway looks great, and looks like it's built to last. The areas that required finishing off by a different method than the bulk of the driveway, which Carl had explained beforehand, blend in almost perfectly. Looking at the edge in several places, I was surprised by the thickness of the asphalt. Carl made recommendations about how to landscape with topsoil along the slightly raised edges of the driveway myself at minimum cost. He described exactly what to expect in terms of the changing appearance of the surface during the first year of service--that tire marks were bound to show initially on such a pristine surface, but that everything would blend in within a year. I have no doubt that he is right. I gave an "A" for price even though I don't know a lot about what's out there. But I did do a bit of comparison before calling Guarco Construction and I believe that Carl gave us a good price to begin with, and then from his casual comments along the way I gather that he may have used more material then he expected to. Our agreement called for half the payment on completion of the first day of work, and balance upon completion of the job. We were not home the day that he paved, so I asked if I should leave the check in the garage. He said no, he didn't want payment until I had seen the work, was satisfied and had the chance to ask any questions. This is a professional who has confidence in his work and respect for his customers. What more can I say? Well, I can say that I very highly recommend Guarco Construction.
Description of Work: Repaved my 18 by 72 foot inclined driveway, including removal of old paving, removal of a few large rocks raised by frost heaves, adding and grading a substantial amount of base material, and creating a berm where the driveway meets the shoulder of the road to stop the flow of rainwater from the road down into my garage.

If you would like to see Asphalt Artists at work . . . Hire Carl of Guarco! First, there were a lot of complications: Weather, Mechanical Problems; Complex Paving Geometry and Drainage, etc. Throughout it all, Carl maintained his good humor and positive attitude. I never doubted that the job would meet my expectations. I was able to watch some of the prep work, and some of the paving. I was repeatedly impressed (as both a home owner and an engineer) with the care, concern, and attention to detail that both Carl and his Crew displayed. Every place where "new met old", other than material or color, the seam or joint is invisible. I asked for some "extras", like expanding a parking pad and adding a "sweeper" to the driveway apron: No Problem - and at a very reasonable rate. These guys like what they do, and are (justifiably) proud of their work. THEY EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS EXPLANATION OF THE two "B" SCORES: 1. Carl was not the cheapest - but was the Best Value in my mind. 2. Huge Backups at the Asphalt Plant created delays on Paving Day ... AND ... They stayed until the job was done! Thank you Carl

Carl Guarco and his helper were extremely efficient and knowledgeable as to how to go about a daunting project, part of which was in my neighbors yard. He cleverly ascertained that the sink hole was made by this weeping willow tree and could see no evidence of a broker sewer pipe or underground stream which were possibilities. He carefully guided his heavy equipment around the problem, taking great care not to rush the job. It is my pleasure to recommend him for any of his work of construction, site work, sewer projects, driveway paving, snow plowing and landscaping endeavors. Carl and his staff were a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Guarco Construction excavated one third of my residential backyard and extracted a huge 36" diameter old weeping willow tree trunk and roots, which had created a huge sink hole. He filled in this chasm and skillfully leveled the ground, filling the hole with crushed stone and then topping the whole area off with loam, fertilizer and grass seed.

Carl was very professional. He explained the whole process to me, kept me in the loop as to progress & timing & was prompt at returning calls. He was also familiar with the permit requirements for the Town of West Hartford. The driveway came out very nice, replacing an eyesore. They also removed a strip of asphalt that was parallel to my deck. Good price, easy to work with, good communication & very nice finished product. Would definitely work with Guarco Construction again and recommend them.

We were very happy with the process and work from start to finish. Guarco is a trusted, long-standing company and proved to us why. They were clear about the work they was doing, provided a contract, and were in touch throughout the whole process - Carl was always a phone call away. I'm grateful that they took the time to do this right - laying the support material, rolling it, letting it settle, and providing care instructions after the blacktop was laid. Our area has very poor clay soil, which can be challenge for paving, and instead of rushing the job, they took the time to do it right to make the work last for a long time. Perhaps most importantly, the new driveway looks beautiful. Our previous driveway was literally sagging and had many cracks where weeds were growing through. Payment was made in two installments - one when the work started, and the other half when the work was finished. This was very clearly written in the contract. Our neighbors have commented on how nice the new driveway looks. We wholeheartedly recommend Guarco Construction for paving. They are friendly, responsive, and do high-quality work.
Description of Work: We contacted Guarco Construction for a quote to repave our driveway for our single family home this year. Carl, the company's owner, came onsite within a day and gave us a quote for removing current blacktop and paving 2-2.5 inches of new blacktop. He also gave us a quote for adding a few inches of support material under the blacktop if it was needed. The foundation of our original driveway was not sufficient, so we ended up using this option, and are very happy we did. In one morning, they removed all blacktop and disposed of it. Later that week, they came and poured the first layer of support material. Then they returned to roll the support material. They let this stay for a few weeks to settle and tested it out before the final step of laying the blacktop. When all was good, in one afternoon they laid and rolled the blacktop. We were given care instructions and advice for making this driveway last as long as possible. Guarco handled all the town permits for the work.

When I first called Guarco Construction, Carl was prompt in coming over to give me an estimate. His price was better than other companies I had contacted and he explained the process thoroughly. His crew was very professional and polite and they answered all my questions and concerns. I was always able to get hold of Carl on the phone when I needed to. He was very prompt in getting back to me.They dug up the 50 year old driveway, cleaned the area and then replaced the blacktop. They were very careful not to damaged the lawn. They worked steadily until the job was done. I am very happy with the results and I highly recommend this company.

I am a property manger for Apartment Complex's and just started at a new property in West Hartford. When I walked along the property I had quite a few large potholes in the parking lot and one HUGE pothole in another area. I called Carl and the next day he showed up to give me an estimate. He was very professional and explained everything that would be done in detail. I hired him and withing 2 days Carl and his crew were there fixing the problem. Withing a few hours they were done and what a difference in the parking lot. My residents were so thankful and happy the job was done correctly and not just a cheap repair. KUDO's to Carl and his crew. I will be calling for more work for sure!!

Carl Guarco was absolute great, and he has a great team working with him -- Jeff and Angel. My driveway is very long (greater than 400 ft), and was in very bad shape. The person from the previous paving company was more interested in getting to his next job than doing a good job here. The base was inadequate and the pitch in front of the garage was all wrong (water would come in on a heavy rain or after a snowstorm). The driveway needed to be completely re-engineered. Carl correctly assessed what needed to be done. There was a significant amount of site work that needed to be done. This included: (1) removing the original blacktop, (2) using the transit to re-pitch the driveway and a significant portion of the front yard that met the driveway, (3) removing many yards of old base material in front of garage, (4) laying down filter fabric to prevent the ground soil from working its way into the new base material, (5) adding a layer of large process, followed by a layer of small process, (6) bringing in and spreading topsoil and seed, and finally (7) paving. Carl was always very conscientious about the customer's dollar and doing the best job possible. While doing the work, he happily took time to answer all of my questions. He would be there when he said he would, and if some unforeseeable circumstances prevented that, he would always call (and always return your call). I feel the price was more than fair for the work done. Without any hesistation, I would highly recommend Guarco Construction for driveway and paving work -- big and small.

Three years ago I had Carl Guarco replace my old driveway and was very satisfied with the work he did. I also had him put a new driveway in at my fathers residence . The job there was beautifully done and my father was very pleased which was surprising since he was extremely fussy. Last Fall I discovered that a root from a nearby tree had worked its way under the driveway causing a section of it to rise up and begin to break away. I called Carl and he came out the following afternoon to inspect it. He told me he would fix the damaged area at no cost to me using the "infra-red method" (seamless joint). The end result was that except for the color of the new asphalt, you could hardly tell the difference between the new and the old pavement. Thank you Carl!! I strongly recommend Guarco Construction for any residential paving work...

Needing my asphalt driveway replaced, I consulted Angie's List for contractors. After reading many reviews of a number of contractors, I contacted GUARCO and set up a time for an estimate. The owner (Carl) arrived as scheduled and discussed the need to replace the driveway. He provided a written proposal which I accepted on the spot for two reasons. First, I was aware of what our neighbor (who's driveway is smaller) paid their contractor for their new driveway. Second, the reviews I read on Angie's List influenced my decision that another estimate was not needed. GUARCO showed up on the day scheduled. When they pulled up the first chunks of the old driveway, it was discovered that the base was a very sandy soil which is not a good base for asphalt. Carl discussed this issue with me and we agreed on a price to remove the sandy soil and replace it with a proper base called "process". Even with this development, the total price for the job was still less than my neighbors. Carl was very respectful (as were the other 2 workers...Jeff & Angel) and was very good in communicating all aspects of the job and any issues found. For example, we had a couple spots that had ground moisture making the base spongy. So they gave special attention to these spots by adding extra process base and giving the driveway more time to dry out before laying the new asphalt. This was necessary to prevent premature cracking of the new driveway. Being recently retired, I was able to watch the entire project. I was extremely impressed with the knowledge they have accumulated from the many years of doing this work and the expertise in performing their function. I am a big proponent of doing things myself because that way, I know what was done and how it was done. However, when I can't do a specific job, I am very careful with who I trust to do my project. I can say without hesitation, these guys are very good and I strongly recommend them for any residential paving job.

we started looking paving contractors in June 2013. Narrowed it down to two and hired Guarco Construction. We asked for a few prior customers and were given addresses. Visited one home in West Hartford with a situation similar to ours. Were lucky enough to discuss the work done with homeowners. They were pleased with work done and cost. Our driveway was removed, re-surfaced and paved over course of 3 days in the hottest week of July. Heat index ~100 degrees all three days. Work was performed by owner, Carl, and 1 additional worker, Angel, on days 1 & 2. on the paving day a third worker was pulled in. In spite of the excessive heat, they put in full days. The existing driveway had been there from early 1960's. The driveway is narrow, slightly less than 10 feet and right up against the house. We were very impressed with the prep work, there was no damage to house, and the heavy equipment was crazy close <inches> to house. we were also impressed with the finished work the finished driveway has sufficient grade to allow rainwater to flow to street. the finished driveway also has a sufficient grade to permit water flowing away from house. the finished driveway is nicely paved. time will tell how good a job this was. I plan to report back next spring, with an update, but am happy to say right now I would not hesitate hiring Carl, GUARCO again.

Mr. Guarco was thoughtful and treated me with respect. He demonstrated a great deal of professionalism as I had a problem with water run-off. He removed the old driveway then engineered the site and added the appropriate amount of fill to rechannel the run-off. He graded the driveway and installed new asphalt. It came out beautiful and now I don't have to worry about water puddeling up in a low spot left by the previous contractor. My driveway looks beautiful. I highly recommmend Guarco Construction.
