The workers from Stellar Windows & Insulation Company did excellent work. I would definitely recommend them. I’m not sure if it was the right price because I have never got this kind of work done before. I would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Stellar Windows & Insulation Company about a month ago. They did a lot of sealing around the whole house, especially in the attic and the ceiling. They put more insulation into to the attic to improve energy efficiency.

They did an excellent job! I had Stellar do some insulation work and after the storm I contacted them to do my roof as well. Byron is an amazing guy. He was very nice and dealing with him was easy. He helped me deal with the insurance company and went above and beyond on helping me get things approved by the insurance company. He took me up on the roof to show me the damage. The end result of my roof and gutters look great. Everyone in the neighborhood received new roofs after the storm and I think mine looks the best!

I called and made an appointment for someone to come out and give me an estimate; the lady on the phone was very professional and courteous and we set a time and date for the following week. She said that a fellow named Kristian would be providing the estimate. Kristian never called and never showed for the estimate. This utter lack of professionalism and respect for my time has led me to give Stellar Windows a failing grade. Kristian called late the following day (after the missed appointment) to explain that the scheduling software had malfunctioned and that he would like to reschedule; I am uninterested.

"We'll stay as long as we have to so that the job is done right". Those were the words from the Stellar guys as they had run into some snafu's and had to come back for a more day than was expected. And these guys did do it right. I went from 0.65 to 0.32 NACH and my attic insulation increased to R-49. The team was quite clean. Even after spending hours in the awful heat of the attic, they would take the time to vacuum and clean up the house as well as their work area outside. The team was also very good about explaining what they were doing, and listening to my concerns of areas that i wanted them to focus on. They even did a few things for me that I had asked for - taping down my moisture barrier, fixing some insulation in the crawlspace, and other things. The Stellar lead, Kristian, was a pleasure to work with. He came to the house at least 5 times during the whole process, first to provide the estimate, then to check on the work of his team, and a few times at the end to make sure we didn't have any issues with our water heater spilling CO2 into the house now that it was sealed up so tight. He also was great about listening to my budget constraints and finding a solution that made us all happy. All in all, Stellar was great to work with - highly recommended.

After reading the rave reviews on the Angie's List, I was looking forward to my appointment with Kristian. When I made the appointment, they asked me to send a copy of the energy audit that was done last December so that he could review it before the appointment and be able to go over the work recommended in the audit. I e-mailed a copy of the report shortly after making the appointment. I was hoping to learn a few things from him, and get a good opinion on priorities, etc as I wasn't sure how to go forward with some of the recommendations in the report. The office called a couple of days later, and asked to move the appointment up a day and I agreed to do so. He arrived, and asked if I had a copy of the report, as for whatever reason he had not received it from the office staff. I was a little disappointed about that, but we went up to my laptop where I had an electronic copy (I did not have a hard copy handy). We proceeded to discuss adding insulation to the attic. I generally ask a lot of questions and this was no different, but in general, I wasn't really happy with the answers I got. For example: does my attic need additional ventilation? Answer: If it does, we will add some. I wanted to DEFINE the scope of work in this visit, not have to schedule other visits or have them start work and then want to change the scope partway. How is additional ventilation added? For intake, we'll install additional soffit vents under the eaves (he was descriptive enough I knew what he meant). And what if additional exhaust vents are needed? He'll refer that to the roofing branch of their company. He asked me if I knew the surface area of the attic. No I didn't; he said he'd take a look at it from GoogleEarth and estimate it from that. Now we were less than 20 ft from the attic hatch and he had brought a ladder, why didn't we just measure it? Or make an estimate based on the floor we were standing on, as it has a fairly open floor plan that would be easy to measure? The rest of the visit went on in this manner. I'd ask a question, and either get an answer that really didn't answer the question or that made me scratch my head. One clear example was when, in the basement, he recommended sealing the ducts with mastic, but then opening the vents to make it a heated, conditioned space -- unless the ducts are REALLY leaky, wouldn't opening the vent have the same effect as just letting them leak a little (without the transfer of money from my pocket to his)? I kind of picked up a vibe of, "You don't need to worry about the details, just hire us and we will take care of EVERYTHING (and give you a really nice bill at the end)." Maybe that works for some folks but not for me. I have enough work experience being on both sides of a contract to know I want a very defined scope of work and price BEFORE any work begins; good contracts make good projects. The next surprise was when I asked about receiving the estimate. He was here on Wednesday (8/10), he said he wouldn't be back in the office until the following Monday (8/15) and Wednesday (8/17), so I would receive something either Monday or Wednesday by e-mail. I questioned to myself if he would be able to remember all the pertinent details by the time he got to my estimate. I am getting several estimates on the crawl space work; and the other estimates have come back within a day. I am now writing this on 8/21, and I have not received an estimate, hence the overall "F" for failing to deliver what was promised. I guess it's clear I didn't get a warm and fuzzy feeling from this company, and I'm mystified why my experience seems so different from everyone else's on Angie's List. I don't see myself hiring this company; I'm afraid it would be a very frustrating experience that I can do without. Follow-up update add 11/19/11. Stellar was the first of five companies I interviewed, and I am adjusting their grade upwards to bring it more in line with the other contractors I rated. Following this submission, I did have a conversation with Jerry, the owner of the company. Jerry and I speak the same language (we are both engineers) and he assured me that Kristian is more of a sales person than a technical person; and that where I sensed he wasn't answering my questions because he felt I was too stupid to understand, in reality he didn't know the answers. Jerry also sent an e-mail detailing several improvements they had been considering to their customer service that they decided to implement following my review. Jerry indicated he would have Kristian submit a bid and include a nice discount to show good will; for the air sealing / insulation in the attic and basement rim joist, their quote was $1770. This was just slightly less than the cost for the company who actually did the job with no discount. Their cost for the vapor barrier & crawl space insulation was $470; which was quite a bit less than I paid the company who did the work; but it was a moot point because that work was already done by the time I got the bid. Kristian did call to ask if I had any questions, and ask me to consider raising my grade (which rubbed me the wrong way and almost backfired because I considered not changing it at all). My revised gade considers the original bid and subsequent interactions.

How did it go overall? Perfectly. The audit was clear and understandable, using the Xcel format. The pricing estimate was straightforward, and Kris sealed all plumbing penetrations and sealed other openings at no additional charge. His one-man crew arrived within minutes of the delivery of the insulation (22 bales) and the work was completed quickly. The truck left with no mess for us to clean up. Kris also made sure we understood the paperwork and process to claim rebates from Recharge Colorado and had invoices for all the work come 2010 tax-return time.
Description of Work: The company, under the direction of Kris Vanghagen, performed a home energy audit under his company's name of Lightly Treading (http://www.lightlytreading.com/). We then discussed how to remedy flaws and he donned his other hat as an insulation contractor though we were under no obligation to do so following the audit. The advice and services he provided were outstanding. Kris works closely with Stellar Windows & Insulation, apparently another name for Stellar Roofing and Solar.

Although there were two re-shingling/roofing estimates made previous to buying my house in June, 2010 ...upon moving in, I used Angie's List to find three more roof estimates. All three had "A" ratings and a number of current reports. One of the roofing companies responded quickly and then didn't show-up for our appointed meeting. Another responded quickly and arrived promptly to our appointed meeting ...and another didn't respond for a week or two, but then DID show up promptly for our appointed meeting. Stellar was the last of the roofers in the last sentence. Next, I received an estimate from Stellar and the "more prompt" roofing company (who also has more years in existence). The estimates were within $5 of each other! I did not choose Stellar to re-shingle my roof, but I would have been comfortable doing so. I chose the other company as a "coin toss," as the two companies were extremely similar in estimate, ideas, suggestions, approach, and ratings. The one thing that might have steered me to the other company was that the other company engaged in easy and quick written correspondance via email. I felt like I had "proof" of statements, whereas my relationship with Stellar was mostly verbal until I waited another week for them to come with a written proposal. In short, I suspect that I would have been happy with Stellar as my roofer. My choice to use Jenesis roofing was almost a coin-flip.

Answered many questions and made reasonable recommendations during the quote process. Showed up on time, kept things clean as work progressed. Cleaned up after themselves well at the end of the process. Replaced weather stripping on doors, performed minor caulking around windows, doors, duct boots and fireplace at no charge. We had done an energy audit including blower door test before the job. They verified the air penetration rates in the audit and re-measured worst case after job was done. Expected results were achieved. They measured carbon monoxide emissions from furnace and water heater after sealing the basement and recommended replacing the hot water heater and installing exterior combustion air supply. We were very happy with the vendor and work done and would use this vendor again.
Description of Work: Basement: Air seal rim joists with closed cell foam Laundry room: Add insulation R-30 blown fiberglass in attic above laundry room to bring to R-50 . Also installed rods to hold existing fiberglass bats in crawl space below laundry room to prevent air channeling between insulation and floor. Attic: Air seal attic and attic hatch. Add R-30 blown fiberglass to bring attic to R-50. Insulated walls between [main floor] attic and master bedroom.

Wow. We thought that the leak in our roof was isolated to a small section but we were wrong! Being over 25 years old, we knew that this roof had about had it and decided that it was time to replace the entire roof rather than just fix it. After submitting a claim with our insurance company for the damage done from the leak (they only covered the water damage not the roof) we contacted Stellar Roofing and Solar based on a recommendation from a friend. They responded immediately and gave us a quote to replace the roof and repair the water damage. We live in an area where the covenants require new roofs to be of a certain type or to go back to cedar shingles. We did not want cedar shingles due to high insurance costs so we elected to up-grade to the concrete shingles. The bid came back very competitive and they had people on staff that could do all the repairs necessary rather than having another company come in to do the repairs while Stellar replaced the roof. This ended up being a huge help as when they tore the old roof off the project got extremely complicated as the water damage and structural work that needed to be done was much greater than expected. In fact, the owner of Stellar Roofing had to get personally involved (he has a degree in engineering) to find a PHD in structural engineering that could sign off on the reinforcement necessary to support the roof. Extra supports were shipped in, extra insulation was brought in and Stellar Roofing repaired and reinforced the entire roof to meet the Structural requirements set forth by the engineers. The amazing part of this whole project was that Stellar stood by their quote and even absorbed the extra cost of the extra engineering required. They communicated daily with us on progress, cleaned up after themselves and did an absolutely beautiful job. It is rare when you get a company that goes the extra mile like this when things get a little "out of the ordinary" from the initial bid. Furthermore, they were a first class operation that I could count on even when I was away during the project! If our situation was different we would have added solar to our project as well. Stellar has great experience in combining roofing/Solar solutions along with the incentives offered by the energy companies and federal government to make it extremely cost effective. I highly recommend this company for roofing and solar work and am thankful I used them on this "expanding" project!
Description of Work: Replaced an old Cedar Shingle roof with concrete tiles. Replaced half the insulation and repaired severe water damage both inside and out. Very professional from quoting phase (technical help with selection of materials and solar components), through to completion. Happy that we went with an experienced roofing crew for the solar install... we have not had any roofing related issues that can often occur with the solar mounting provisions. The job went very well, and the roof looks great... and we are enjoying a significant savings on our electrical bill each month.
