The office staff was great with scheduling, and then a follow-up reminder the day before the scheduled move. The movers showed up on time. They plastic-wrapped the furniture that had drawers, and EXPERTLY loaded the truck with room to spare. It was impressive!

We hired Road Scholars to do a full pack and move the day after Thanksgiving. The process of getting the quote and scheduling was great. I was very impressed that they could get the entire job completed in one day and the day after Thanksgiving. We were told a crew of 4 would be showing up. Friday morning we get a call that only 2 would be able to make it but the job could still be completed in a day. The guys were great, getting everything packed and loaded quickly. The only issue I had with the crew was the sign left out on my kitchen counter during the unpacking indicating that "tips are appreciated." I find this tacky and unprofessional. I had bought the crew lunch and was planning on tipping but being asked outright is rude.

They were great! We were supposed to have three guys but only two showed up. They did call and tell us that the third guy could not make it due to an injury. The office was organized and called to confirm. The movers were quick and organized. And funny. They have been with the company for like 18 years. I highly recommend them. I hope we never ever move again but if we do we will call Road Scholars.

We had an estimate before the move and more contact/confirmation prior to the move. All went as planned. Movers arrived on time, worked VERY hard and efficiently. Wrapped all furniture. We did have one broken barstool. We didn't discover it until later and had it repaired at American Furniture. No other breaks or scratches. They did a great job and even moved furniture around for us.

The front office staff were excellent in getting us booked on the day we wanted . They are very responsive and courteous. The movers are all professional and show up on time. However, the moving process did not go as smooth as we would hope. The movers work very hard and get the work done in about 3 hours. The only thing I am less impressed is the way they handle the boxes and packaging. We packed all our items ourselves very carefully, and separated them in different categories- Fragile Items, Electronics, Furniture's, clothing, etc. We did inform the movers to be careful with the electronics and fragile items. However, we still see some of the boxes being thrown around into the truck and they drop a few boxes during the moving process, as I was overseeing them. I was actually impressed by the movers and even offer them a generous gratuity after the fact. However, when we started unpacking some of the fragile items a couple of weeks later, we found some of our art and glass pieces, as well as photo frames broken. We submitted our claim to Road Scholars immediately, and then we waited for 3 weeks. We finally received a letter in the mail stating we signed off the Freight order which indicate all packaging packed by the customer Road Scholars is not responsible for any damage items, so as any glass items in the packaging. We basically found the explanation unreasonable as we were not informed of the disclaimer only after the move when we have to make the payment and sign off the freight order. We do not even know if any items have been damaged at that time. It could also be handled much more effectively up front by Road Scholar's, as we inquire on a weekly basis where the claim stands such that we could repair or replace our items as soon as possible. We were instead asked to wait and hold off for any repairs or replacement as the claim could take 30 days to resolve. Nonetheless, we are speechless after getting the letter rejecting our claim. This turns out to be more than what we bargain for. We will seriously think about what items we are going to move ourselves the next time we hire a mover.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. They were fine and I didn't have any issues. I forgot to give them one of the certificates so I still have one because there was a lot of hub bub. They were good guys. I paid additional because they went a long way to pick up a refrigerator and brought it to our place in Elizabeth so most of it was time in the truck. They also moved some concrete table tops while they were here. It was more driving than moving, but they did a great job.

I want my money back from Angie's List for the Voucher. I can't afford to use the voucher. The offer should have made it clear that the minimum price for this vendor is $294.
Description of Work: There is no such thing as "$100 worth of moving services" with this company! The offer is totally misleading! I only needed a couple of guys to unload a truck. It would take less than 2 hours but this company requires a minimum of 3 hours at $98 per hour! That is outrageously expensive. I know I could find someone else to do this job for far less. When I first moved to Denver 2 years ago I hired two guys through U-Haul and they cost me $80 total for 2 hours.

We tried to explain the rates to [member name removed], but there must have been a misunderstanding. We DO NOT have a three hour minimum, we have a one hour minimum. I even sent an email explaining this, following is my message: "No [member name removed]. There is a one hour minimum, plus a one hour service fee. Therefore two hours or $196.00. Minus the $100.00 voucher equals $96.00. I hope this clarifies our rates." I am sorry that we were unable to convey the rates to [member name removed] in a manner in which she could understand our pricing structure. Thank you for the feedback.

There was a little confusion because there was somebody else that I started with and then they couldn't ever make on a day that I was available. So I ended up with Road Scholars Moving & Storage. They charged me more because we went like 15 minutes more or something like that and that was okay with me. I needed a mover that week and they came within 48 hours.

It went great. I don't have a single complaint.
Description of Work: Professional from the get go, from the receptionist to the final closing of the truck doors. It was snowing/raining the day of our move. Two great guys came out and never once complained. We have a FIVE hundred pound piano!! They moved it so delicately. I never once worried about damage or them rushing. They were prompt and quick but never rushed or sloppy. We have a three story house including a basement with a ton of stairs. So I was glad they knew what they were doing. You wouldn't think that being a mover takes much skill. but it does, trust me. These guys are artists of the moving trade. Will never hire anyone else for our moving needs. This company is our go-to from here on out.

I had a great deal of difficulty understanding the pricing. At first I was told that I would be charged for a minimum of two hours. I assumed that meant I could have the services for two hours. Later, I checked to clarify. This time I was told that the movers would work for one hour and that any time more than that would be pro-rated, in addition to a $94 service fee. This was the bad news. The good news is that the movers, Mikey and Jerome, were amazing! They were strong, fast, efficient, cheerful, and really nice. They finished within the hour. With the Angie's List coupon, the total cost of $163 was well within the going rate.

First off, I should say that the move happened to be on the hottest day of the year up to that point. It was 96 degrees outside, and the movers worked very hard. Based on that fact, I could not rate them lower than a C overall. Here is why I didn't score them higher and why I would not use them again: 1. They were supposed to arrive between 10 am and noon, and they were supposed to call 30 minutes prior to arrival. They showed up at 12:30 pm and did not call first.2. At the new house, while they were setting the baby grand piano in place, they broke one of the three legs. The leg nearly split into two pieces.3. Instead of owning up to the accident, they screwed the leg on anyway, and one of the movers tried to cover up evidence of the crack with wood stain.4. While trying to cover up the crack, they dripped wood stain on the carpet (brand new carpet in a brand new house).5. They did not inform me of the accident. I happened to walk by and notice the stain on the carpet. When I investigated, I noticed the cracked piano leg. The piano would have crashed to the floor at the first significant bump.6. A few days after the move, I noticed a broken leg on our kitchen table. The movers did not remove the table legs for transport, even though I had suggested it. I did not report this as a claim because I was able to fix the table myself. Here's why I didn't score them lower than a C: 1. Once confronted, the movers did admit to the accident and the subsequent coverup.2. They took the cracked piano leg with them to be repaired.3. The claims process was efficient, and the communication with Sally in the office was very good, even though it took a month for the leg to be fixed.4. They sent a carpet repair company out to the house to cut out the stained carpet and put in patches. They did a good job with the carpet repair.5. They sent the movers back, once the leg had been repaired, to set the piano up. They did a good job with the leg repair. The four movers were very hard-workers, and I know that accidents happen. I would have respected the company if they had just admitted the accident. I don't really know if this is a reflection of the company as a whole, or if it's an isolated incident with just this particular crew, but I do know that I will never hire them to move anything of mine again, especially something as large and valuable as a baby grand piano.
Description of Work: We hired Road Scholars Moving and Storage to move our furniture and bigger items from one side of town to the other. We were specifically interested in them because they claimed to have extensive experience moving pianos. We have a baby grand piano, and we liked the idea of having one company do all the moving instead of hiring a separate company just for the piano.

Road Scholars Inc. went above and beyond. On the beginning until end, they packed everything very well. A trip that should have only taken 8 hours to them wound up overnight because we got stuck in a snowstorm and they had to spend an overnight in the motel. I was able to get into town, it took me 22 hours. I was stuck on the interstate for 4 hours just sitting. Luckily, I had my cellphone and my charger and we talked a couple of times while I was just sitting there and they wanted to make sure that I was okay and to call me when I got in. The way they made sure that everything came off that was supposed to be on the truck, I love their system. They arranged the heavy furniture for me so I wouldn't have to move it. they even spent a few extra minutes helping me problem solve how to get my big furniture in the room. The movers have spoiled me and took very, very good care of me.
Description of Work: They moved me from Denver. I've moved from my house of 3,000 square ft to an apartment of 1200.

I saw a coupon on Angie's list for Road Scholars Moving & Storage. I called to get pricing before I bought the coupon. I asked what the hourly rate was and told the gentleman I had a small move. He quoted me $90 and hour with a one-hour minimum, no hidden or additional fees-straight up. So I told him I wanted to confirm how the coupon worked and I said "If I use 2 hours of your service, that is $180, minus the $100 coupon is $80 total?" He replied, "yes." So I thought that was great and I went on Angie's list a couple of days later to buy my coupon. A couple of days after purchasing my coupon I called to schedule my move. The lady that answered said something different to me. She said it was $90 an hour with a $90 service fee. That sounded different to me. So I clarified at that time that my two hours of work would not cost me $180, but $270 minus the coupon is $170. She said that was correct. I informed her I was not told that, she said there was nothing she could do and so I asked to speak to a manager. The manager was gone for the day at 345pm in the afternoon. I called back after the weekend and scheduled my move without mentioning to the lady what had happened-I just wanted to get this over with and I already purchased my coupon, so I went through with scheduling my move. After scheduling my move, I saw an email asking me if I wanted to schedule my move for the coupon I purchased on Angie's list. So I replied and told them I already scheduled the move but this is what happened and that I felt like my hands were tied with this coupon. Would they be willing to compensate me, if anything for being mislead before purchasing my coupon? I got a response telling me that their employee that quoted me has worked there for 20 years and knows their charges very well, they contacted Angie's list on my behalf to get me a refund for the coupon, and were cancelling my move. I replied and told them that I never asked them to cancel my move nor gave them permission to contact Angie's list for me and that I needed them to confirm they would be there on the time and date I scheduled. They wrote back and said they did talk to Angie's list to get my refund to me and they would not like to do my move. They also went on and on about how much other companies charge and charge hidden fees, etc. I tried calling to talk with the manager that was sending me emails and guess what? She was gone before 3:00pm on a Wednesday afternoon. I contacted a new company, got my move for $20 cheaper per hour, family owned and operated, local company. A much better fit for me. So, I called Angie's list to see about my refund, as I suspected, they had no request for a refund and Angie's list also informed me that they would not issue a refund on my behalf unless I called to do so. (yes, Angie's list gave me a refund when I called) So, yet more misleading information from Road Scholars Moving & Storage. I would not recommend them, they have horrible customer service, the customer is wrong-wrong-wrong, their employees do not make mistakes apparently, and they DO try to deceive you when you call to get a quote.
Description of Work: I called to get a quote from a company after seeing a coupon on Angie's List. I got a quote that was incorrect (I didn't know it was wrong), he left out the SERVICE fee charge. I bought the coupon from Angie's List and called to schedule my service, at which time I was given correct information. After scheduling my service and asking if they were willing to compensate me since I purchased a coupon on the word of the first quote I got, and they cancelled my service and mislead me about my refund from Angie's List. Thank God Angie's List is legit!!!

Response from Road Scholars Moving & Storage
I will answer Member's complaint with the facts of our correspondence, using quotes from our email thread. Member called and spoke to the gentleman (for which she originally referred to) and he gave her our rates. Our rate structure is simple by design, to avoid any confusion. We charge an hourly rate ($90.00 in this case) with a one hour minimum, plus a one hour service fee which accounts towards fuel and the roundtrip travel ($90.00). In this case, her minimum would be $180.00 minus her coupon of $100.00, for a balance due of $80.00. Member told the gentleman that her move was very small (that we would only move a few big pieces) and it should only take the one hour minimum. As I explained to her via email: “When you called and spoke to him, you had stated that your move was very small. The two hours discussed, was for the one hour labor minimum and the one hour service fee; for a total minimum of $180.00. Since you had already paid $75.00 for a value of $100.00; there would just be a balance due of $80.00. At this point, she even admitted that she misunderstood, as she stated: “He did mention a hour minimum, but I clearly misunderstood what he said.” The rates were quoted correctly, but unfortunately somewhere within the conversation there was a misunderstanding. Member purchased the coupon on Fri. 6/8/12 at 5:56 pm; she called on Mon. 6/11/12 to schedule her move, became angry with one of our female staffers due to the above misunderstanding and hung up on our employee. On Tues. 6/12/12 at 9:44 am, I emailed her stating that I noticed she purchased a coupon, gave her our rates and asked if she would like to schedule her move. I did not know of any of the previous problems above and this was my first involvement with Member. On Tues. 6/12/12 at approximately 11:00 am she called and scheduled her move, without mentioning anything about her issues. Then she emailed me stating: “I just booked this, but I have to tell you that I have a sour taste in my mouth already for your company I called today and booked my move (with…), because I can't get my money back from Angie's list. I didn't mention any of this because I didn't want to get upset again, but I am letting you know that I am not happy about being mislead, but feel my hands are tied because I already paid $75 for this coupon.” Following is a portion of my response to her via email at 11:39 am: “I am sincerely sorry if there was a misunderstanding. I have a call in to my representative at Angie's List and I will get back to you as soon as I hear from him. I will figure out a way for you to get a reimbursement for this purchase, so that you can use another moving company…Good luck with your move. Thank you!” And in another email on Wed. 6/13/12 at 9:53 am: “ I interpreted this statement as that you felt your hands were tied and were being forced into using our firm, since you had already purchased the coupon and could not get a refund. This is why I contacted Angie's List to see about getting you a refund, so that you can work with a company you would feel comfortable with… I spoke with a gentleman named … at Angie's List and he stated that they would be more than happy to issue you a full refund for the coupon that you purchased. There are many other good moving companies in town, good luck with your move and I hope you enjoy your new home.” She then responded by saying that Angie’s List can’t issue a refund on someone else’s behalf. My final answer to her via email on Wed. 6/13/12 at 5:11 p.m.: “I did not say that I was requesting a refund, on your behalf. I simply asked them if you could get a refund from them or if I would have to give you the refund from our company. They said I would not have to issue the refund and that you could call and request the refund directly from Angie's List. Thank you and I am glad that they were able to take care of it so readily for you. If there are any further questions or problems with the refund, please email me.” Member also says in the complaint that she was unable to reach me when calling on Wed. 6/13/12 at 3:00 pm. I am sorry that I was not physically present when she called the office, as my job requires that I am out in the field on job sites frequently. However, I do have a smart phone that I can receive emails, for which I did respond to each and every one of her emails (at least four email responses within a 31 hour period), with the last and final email being at 5:11 pm (which is after business hours) on this very day that she states she was unable to reach me. She states that we purposely misled her. Companies that use this dishonest tactic would have waited until moving day and the presentation of the moving bill, leaving the customer no choice. As she states, we again reviewed the correct rates when she scheduled. Obviously there was simply a misunderstanding during her initial contact with our company which was clarified during the review of the rates upon her booking. If we were truly trying to bait and switch as she accuses us, why would we try so hard to explain the rates and resolve this situation more than a week in advance to her move? Member was unhappy well before the commencement of the services to be provided. She stated that she felt her hands were tied and was being forced into using our firm due to the coupon. In response to this statement, I did everything I could to reassure her that she would not be forced into using our company and that I would figure out a way to allow her to get a refund. I was not trying to get a refund on her behalf, I was just trying to assess where the refund would come from our company or Angie’s List. There were no services performed, she did not want to use our company, and I found out that Angie's List could issue a refund. I really am not sure what more I can do. I am once again sincerely apologetic that there was a misunderstanding. Thank you.

I called the company about a week before the move and made arrangements. The estimate provided was general in nature, but adequate. It was unclear from my conversation with the company if they understood I would pack some things and they would need to pack the rest. The leader of the three men crew called when they were leaving the company office to let me know when they would arrive in the day of the move. The crew showed up when they said they would, and quickly got to work. They packed everything in a professional manner and loaded it on the truck. At the destination they unloaded everything and placed the furniture where I told them to. They allowed me to unpack the wardrobe boxes so they could take them back and not charge me for them. They did break one table in the move. They told me someone would contact me to arrange for repair, though nobody has ever contacted me. Though minor in the big picture it showed a lack of professionalism on their part. In addition, they had me sign a comment that would lead one to believe the breakage was prior to the move. Though I would use them again, I believe they could have done a better and more professional job. There has been no follow-up by the company as to my satisfaction with the work. That surprises me.
Description of Work: Company moved my furniture and belongs from a townhouse to an apartment.

They did a good job. They did a focused and quick job. We had it loaded up in less time than I expected. Russ, Mikey and Bama were good guys. It was all done as quoted and it was money well spent.
Description of Work: I used Road Scholars Moving & Storage to load a 26 foot U-Haul with furniture and belongings that we had packed.

The workers from Road Scholars Moving & Storage Company did lots of extra work. They were very careful; there was only one scratch on something expensive. I thought that was pretty good. The bill was higher than what I expected but that is because I asked them to do extra work for me. They were excellent. Their prices were not the lowest but they were a long way from the highest. My overall experience with them was very good. I would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Road Scholars Moving & Storage Company about a month ago. They moved my heavy furniture.

Danny and Ryan were terrific -arrived on time and went right to work and never even stopped for a break in 5 hours. They were professional, friendly, and hard working. They seemed to care about doing a good job, asking questions and making sure we were happy with everything. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Moved my elderly mother from her apartment to new condo about 8 miles away making one stop along the way at my house to pick up a heavy t.v. we couldn't lift.

Sorry, I answered this above. From the first call until the job was completed, I felt that professional touch, and I felt they would do it properly, which they did. The owner was prompt in answering all my questions, and did so in a capable manner, installing confidence in me regarding their ability to get the job done. I felt their overall estimate for a complete move was fair and realistic, but that will come later when I sell!
Description of Work: They were prompt with an estimate for service, and in answering all my questions, as well as checking in after the work was completed. At this time, I had them pack many boxes and move them, along with some furniture, to the basement. They worked diligently and didn't waste time. They exhibited professionalism, and got the job done very well!
