Brothers Plumbing, Heating and Electric was very honest. He came out and he could have told me something was wrong with it but all that was wrong were some batteries in my thermostat. I have used them three times and I've thought that they are very good. I would use them again in the future.

Electrical did not pass inspection and they had to come back to fix it. They cut hole in the back of my cabinet (above microwave) to vent outside but then said they could not cut hole in bottom of cabinet for microwave to vent out. They said this is not their job because they don't cut cabinets. First, they did cut the back of the cabinet to vent outside. Second, I hired them to vent the microwave outside. Third, they never told me this would not be included until after they finished the job. Fourth, they refused to help us fix it. My husband had to go buy special tools and do it himself to finish the job for them.
Description of Work: Hired this company to help change from electric to gas stove. They had to run gas line to install stove, cut vent to outside to vent the microwave, and redo wiring for stove.

I'd used Brothers in the past to repair my badly installed new furnace (ripped off by a con man), so I called them first to replace a less than 5-year old thermostat that conked out inexplicably. I also had a $30 coupon. I went ahead and signed up for the $45 special water heater inspection and drain they offered. Not having your furnace working when you have cold-induced urticaria, a condition when you get painful welts or hives when the temperature dips below 65 for me, a working furnace is pretty darn important. The technician they sent was polite & kind, even taking off the $45 water heater inspection fee on my 21-year old Bradford & White 40 gallon tank after just peering into it and freaking out that it hadn't already blown. Was quoted a price of $1749 for a replacement, or $6872 if I wanted to get a Rinnai tankless system. I have since found several A-listed plumbers in this area who charge a fraction of their cost.... it really pays to shop around and not be in the situation where you HAVE to buy immediately. The shocker was $251 for replacing the programmable thermostat with a standard non-programmable. It was less than 2 hours of work, and the tech questioned me about the furnace I had, and whether it had a heat pump. Excuse me? You were down in my crawl space, I don't go down there, you should know what's down there! Anyway, hearing from friends that this no-frills thermostat actually costs around $50, I was pretty ticked off about the mark ups and price. I ended up paying $300 for a $50 thermostat, and the advice that I needed a new water heater, and this was after the $30 coupon! I'm glad to have found Angie's List and hope to avoid any mistakes in my future repairs, remodels and upgrades.

I am a long distance landlord and felt Dan was trying to take advantage of that fact. I have yet to find another plumber that would charge $474 to install a toilet that I would provide.
Description of Work: Dan Chiquito arrived on time to fix one clogged toilet and another leaking toilet. He told me the toilets are old (1993) and need to be replaced for a cost of $717. After that shock, I asked for a cheaper option since this was a rental house. He said he could rebuild the leaking toilet (the leak was at the external water turn off valve) for $363. The last option was for me to supply new toilets and he would ONLY charge $474 each to install them. I felt like I was speaking to a car salesman who was only interested in selling me something. I said I would think about it so he charged me the $45 trip fee and left the house. As it turned out, he didn't even bother to fix the leaking valve which I found out about the following afternoon! The tenants told me the bathroom carpet was soaked! I called the company back that following afternoon and they sent Gary out within a couple of hours. He was pleasant to speak with, fixed the leak, and didn't charge me another $45 trip fee. My only complaint with him is that he said he would send us pictures of the job and hasn't yet. My tenant called this company without my knowledge and apparently without checking Angie's List reviews. I didn't check these reviews until after Dan had left on the first trip. Even though Gary fixed one of the immediate problems, I'm still left with two toilets that are constantly getting clogged. I have since called several other plumbers who have excellent reviews on Angie's List and will be getting new toilets installed for more than $300 LESS per toilet than Brothers quoted.

We spoke with Dan and he said that he shut the water off to the toilet that was leaking but that you did not authorize him to proceed with the repair or the replacement of the toilets. Dan said that he took a photo of his invoice and emailed it to her with the prices for the repairs and replacement. You said that you wanted to think it over so we charged our $45 show up fee and left with the water turned off. Dan was onsite for 1hr 10 minutes on the 19th. On 12/20/2012 at 7:04pm we have record of pictures of the shut off valve that Dan emailed to kstownsend@sbglobal.net . Gary did replace the leaking shut off for the toilet Thursday night the 20th and was there for 1.5 hours. Gary did say that the water was turned on when he arrived. However, Dan stated that he turned the water off when he left. Is it possible that the tenants turned the water back on to use the toilet after we left? We also have record that Gary emailed the requested pictures with a subject line titled “985 Sage st.” to the email we have for you on 12/20/12 at 6:56pm. Perhaps he typed in the wrong address. We do offer both repair and replacement options for the work that we do so that you can make a good decision based on all the facts and your situation. Because your 2 toilets are constantly getting clogged, Dan offered to replace them. I do agree that at first our prices are expensive and can appreciate your surprise. But there is a lot of expense involved in operating a quality business. Are you comparing apples to apples in your price comparison? We ask you to compare the quality of the equipment, the warranties and guarantees that you have with the new toilet v. what you would have received with our installation. The toilets that we install are high quality brand that can’t be purchased from a Home Depot. We guarantee that the toilet will not plug up for one year. We also put a 2 years parts and labor warranty on it. Did you receive the same guarantees with the other toilets that you were quoted? Also, are the companies you called licensed and insured? We are. Not only for general liability but also in the event our technician gets injured at your home. If there are any other issues we will take care of it. In addition, we take many steps to make sure we are providing you with a quality technician in your home that you can feel safe with. All of our technicians go through very strict hiring process. They are background checked, drug tested, physically tested. They constantly trained to provide the best services that the industry has to offer. To operate a quality business in this day and age is very expensive. We are a quality service company who have been around for 32 years. We will be here in the future to honor our guarantees. We are also open 7 days a week with no extra charges for our services should you decide to use us in the future. Please let us know as we believe in the quality of work that we do and would like to be your service provider. Respectfully, Brothers Plumbing, Heating & Electric

I guess the $99 is just to drive to your house (explained over the phone when I made the appointment that I needed to have the water level glass tube in my furnace cleaned) - but after checking out my system, they did nothing but provide me an estimate for over $2,400 in repairs to my 4 year old furnace. I told them I would pass and contacted the Heat/AC contractor that installed the furnace initially (Broomhall) who charged $190 to clear the furnace water level glass tube and check out the system - they could find no other issues with the system.

The problem got worse and we were grateful we had an appointment to get it taken care of. On Sunday, after 6 pm, they called and told us they would not be out because they were too busy with other customers. Really? When they make a previous appointment with someone they can't make sure they have the staff to cover anything that would come up? Really? Especially when it was an appointment made in advance and not at the last minute? Wait until the last minute to cancel on the customer so it is too late to find someone else? Really? We have to go to work on Monday and we were counting on this appointment. Now we cannot flush the toilet, do laundry, take a shower before work in the morning and after more calls than I can count, it is too late to find someone else to come fix the problem. Unbelieveable they do business like this and they are on Angie's list, 2 other similar lists and the BBB

My AC failed on a Sunday. The Air compressor was not coming on and it was humming. Initially I thought of fixing it myself and opened up the panel covering the electronics on the compressor. There were three components there so I knew the problem was one of those. One was a capacitor, there was a small circuit board, and a there was a contactor. I realized that I couldn't get parts on a Sunday, and it was almost 100 degrees, so I decided to get help. Brother's charged $79.00 to come out and diagnose the problem, which was their standard fee (not a premium for Sunday). The guy setting up the appointment said that once the tech figured out the problem, he would quote me the price to fix the problem (in addition to the diagnostic fee). The guy showed up quickly and within 3 minutes had diagnosed the relay block as the problem. He had the part with him. It was clear that replacing this part would take about 15 minutes. The quote for the repair came in at $375 (plus the $79 for showing up). I asked him how much the part cost and he said $80. I was stunned! I asked him how that could be possible and he just shrugged and said he didn't set the prices. Indeed he had looked up the pricing on his iPad. The service tech was actually a very nice man and very qualified. However, I couldn't swallow paying almost $500 for a very simple 15 minute repair. I paid him the $79 fee for diagnosing the problem and decided to fix it myself. He called the boss and asked if they would do anything about the price and they offered to waive the $79 diagnostic fee. Even with the fee waived, paying $375 for such a simple repair wasn't palatable. He was not willing (or allowed) to sell me the part. I was able to obtain the part the next day for $27, and I replaced it in about 10 minutes. If you accept the price for the part being $80 (a 3X mark-up), his labor rate, based on the price he quoted me, came to about $1,180 per hour, assuming the job took him 15 minutes. I'm feeling pretty good about my decision to do-it-myself! The sad thing is that I suspect that any HVAC company would have charged the about same price, so in a way, my review is criticizing the industry. What a huge ripoff! Most people wouldn't be able to fix this themselves and the prices being charged are just plain robbery.

I have been using Brothers for over 10 years for plumbing work, heating and A/C, and lawn sprinkler service and have been very happy with them. They are always on time, or they call in advance to warn if they will be late. The work is done professionally and is guaranteed, and I have never had to exercise a guarantee because the work is done right the first time. The technicians are friendly and very professional, as well as highly skilled. There may be others who charge a little less, but I will gladly pay a little extra to have a company I trust. I have recommended them to others and will continue to do so.
Description of Work: My A/C stopped working so I called Brothers, after having tried a couple of simple troubleshooting steps without success. We scheduled an appointment for the next morning. The techician showed up during the window of time scheduled and methodically checked the system. He found a mechanical problem in the outdoor heat pump and fixed it quickly. The only charge was for the service call and nothing additional for the work he did. The A/C has worked perfectly ever since. He was knowledgable and professional, as was the scheduler I spoke to when calling originally.

I just needed a flapper in my toilet. Brothers had a price list in a 3 ring binder and showed me that they could only do either a full rebuild or a fuller rebuild (including the handle). LOL I said, "it's just the flapper". He said they couldn't do just that. Cost me $400 for a $5 or $10 part. Just bought 5 "Toilet Tuneups" from Angie's List that include a new flapper for $25 each. Member, We did some research about the service you are referring to after you posted your report. We found the following: • We serviced your toilet on 08/10/2011. • We completed a “Minor Toilet Rebuild” for $269.00 which does include a flapper but also a supply line and fill valve. A complete repair like this allows us to guarantee our work for 2 full years, parts and labor. If there is an issue, we will come out and repair it for free! • The “Major Toilet Rebuild” you referred to includes all that was mentioned above for the Minor Rebuild as well as replacing the flush valve, flush handle, tank to bowl gasket and bolts and washers. • At the time of service you were provided with an upfront price prior to the start of our work and you approved those prices before we started. You also signed the invoice stating that you were satisfied with the work when we were complete. • The total amount of your invoice was $369.00. This included a $45 show up fee, $55 for Bio Clean (our drain maintenance product) and $269 for the toilet repair. • We are aware that toilet tune-ups are offered for $25.00 by other companies. They do include a new flapper and they do adjust the chain, but is there any other work done for you for that price? We recommend checking what guarantees are included in that price and to be aware of the “lost leader” technique when they are in your home, as this is an opportunity to upsell you on other items once they are there. We strive to provide excellent customer service that our customers have come to know and love. We provide upfront prices so there are no surprises. Our technicians are drug tested, background checked so you can feel safe in your home and we guarantee our work for 2 years on ALL parts and labor. We are open 7 days a week so we are always here when you need us and we don’t charge extra for weekend visits.

Brother's technician, David, arrived promptly, inspected the system, and cleared it as fully functional. As I suspected, the prior company had recommended frivolous repairs. I'm glad I contacted Brother's for an honest and legitimate inspection.
Description of Work: I used Brother's for a second opinion to re-inspect my HVAC system. I had been previously told by Builder's HVAC that my nearly new system needed a furnace clamp and drain line repaired to the tune of $337.37.

Member, We’ve researched the call you are referring to and we’ve found a call for your mother, but the only call we could find was from 12/03/2009. The date you have listed on in your report is from March 8, 2011. If there is another service date, please let us know. We do charge an initial fee to come to a customer’s home that includes diagnosing the problem. We quote this price over the phone when the service is scheduled. Once our technician arrives he determines which repairs need to be done, presenting any options available in writing with an upfront price. Prior to completing any repairs we receive written approval for these prices and work to be completed. Only then do we start the work. With our services we offer above industry standard guarantees and stand behind the work that we do. We are open 7 days a week for service at no additional charge.

David, the technician, arrived at 8:15am and looked at the furnance and told me whoever installed it was inept and installed it unsafely. He questioned if the person who installed the furnace had a permit. He pointed out a number of problems ranging from too small pipes to corrosion polluting the air quality. He also told me there's a gas leak. He checked the leak with a gauge, which did not detect a leak until it was practically in the furnace. All this happened within 30 minutes. He left to go purchase a couple parts, specifically the part of the gas leak, at 8:45am and didn't return until 12:30pm. While he was gone, I contacted the office to make sure I wasn't being charged for the time he was gone. I was told they didn't. Upon return, he replaced the part for the gas leak and replaced a pipe with a larger size. He finished by 1:15pm. I expected to pay approximately $99 for the routine cleaning. When I received the invoice, it totalled over $900. I contacted the office again and expressed my concern. The office manager was extremely rude and didn't care. He was completely unprofessional asked if I expected to have their services performed for free. When I said no, he asked why couldn't I put the service charge on a credit card. I was also asked why I signed off on the work if I was concerned about the price. Looking back, I believe David was using scare tactics and taking advantage of me. David also told me my furnace wasn't registered. When I contacted the manufacturer, they informed me the furnance was registered and under warranty. I reluctantly wrote a check for the full, which was cashed it immediately. I didn't have a chance to dispute it.
Description of Work: I hired them to clean my 2 year old furnance., //// I SUBMITTED THIS REVIEW IN MARCH OF 2012, THIS IS NOW 12/02/12 AND ANGIESW LIST HAS REMOVED MY REVIEW WITH " FILTERED REVIEWS AND THERE WAS A DISPUTE CONNECTED WITH THIS SERVICE AND THIS S HOULD HAVE BEEN ON ON THERE REVIEW LIST FOR 3 YEARS..

Horrible experience!! Got a tankless hot water heater installed which they were not experienced in installing. They took eight days to install and failed inspection twice before I got hot water into my house. The manager never tried to make things right or apologize for the work that was supposed to take 2 - 3 days took eight and we had to take time off of work to babysit them for 10 hours a day. I recently had an issue with my hot water heater which is still under warranty with Brothers. My experience was so bad that I just paid another company to fix the problem to avoid working with Brothers again.

Mike came to a new home I just purchased. The boiler was not firing. When I arrived he told me that the system was missing a number of safety mechanisms including an expansion tank. I pointed to the expansion tank mounted above the boiler and his comment changed to, the expansion tank is turned off and there is some corrosion at the blow off valve so that means the tank must have failed. He told me the boiler was NOT controlled by the thermostat and he could get it to fire but since it was not tied to the thermostat it would continue to run uncontrolled and be a safety issue. He told me the gas valve had failed, basement zone valve failed, thermostat not working, expansion tank failed, etc. I asked him to provide me a quote to repair the items and another quote to replace the boiler. Replacement quote was $3200 and replacement $8700. I paid him the $79 "show up fee" and he left. I called another company for a second opinion. Within 5 minutes the tech told me the boiler was very dirty which was causing the pilot light to not stay lit. I paid him $160 for boiler service to clean everything and test. The system IS controlled by the thermostat and all components work except for the lower level zone valve. The boiler has been running fine for almost a week now turning on and off based on the thermostat. After calling Mike's supervisor they agreed to refund my money but this is a terrible experience which I can explain by 3 options: 1. Tech was incompetent. 2. Tech lied to me and tried to trick me into fixing things that were not broken, which may be a systemic business practice of this business. 3. Tech was too lazy to actually inspect the boiler to find the correct cause. I was told this tech is very "seasoned" and the safety recommendations probably should be heeded. While their may be some corrections that need to be made, the fact is that in 5 minutes another company was able to fix the problem and did not lie to me. I will never do business with this company again and am frankly floored that they are listed on Tom Martino's referral list (unless they paid for it). I highly recommend whatever your service needs are that you do not call this company. I do give John, the supervisor, kudos for refunding my money as this was the right thing to do.

Over the years I've used them lot of time to do different kind of work for us. We are also from the home inspection company so they are on my referral list and I refer them to a lot of people. They are really punctual and very professional. They work seven days a week and on the pricing side they are little on the higher side but in a pinch they are worth it. I'll continue to call them at least to get an estimate.
Description of Work: We used Brothers Plumbing & Heating last year. They did the plumbing when we remodeled our kitchen and moved a sink from one block to the other. They put in a gas line for us when we went from electric stove to a gas unit, they have replaced some valves on the water main to our house and they put some kind of pressure release thing.

They were pretty professional; they cleaned up after themselves well. They seemed to do the work quickly and efficient. I didn?t have any problems with them but it was a bit more expensive than I would have thought.
Description of Work: They replaced a pressure valve on an incoming line into the house.

All went great and now hopefully we are ready for the first snow/cold weather. Our furnace is 8 years old, no problems with it, just wanted to 'cover our bases'....
