Another sucker ripped off by Applewood- Furnace was blowing cold air the day before temperatures expected in low teens. I called my previous HVAC company and they were booked so I called Applewood. They promptly sent a technician out who checked and stated the heat exchanger was cracked and the furnace was unsafe to operate and needed to be replaced. He shined a flashlight in a front panel and said "See that crack?" I didn't, but Applewood had been highly recommended to me by a coworker, so I figured he knew what he was doing. When asked he stated that just replacing the heat exchanger would be almost the cost of replacing the furnace. Furnace was installed the next day. When the Denver HVAC inspector came out to inspect the work we were chatting and I mentioned how I was shown The "cracked" heat exchanger. He stated that there was no way to see a crack that way and asked me what I was charged. When told, he stated I was "grossly overcharged" and that they could have replaced the part for much less. He failed the first inspection because they had left the condensate drain tapped into main drain line (against Code). He told me that Applewood would try to charge me extra for plugging the hole in drain line (which they did) and to tell them that the inspector said he would be inspecting that too when he returned. I told the technician, he said he had to call someone, and he then put in the plug free of charge. On Christmas day the furnace stopped working. I called and they sent a technician out within a few hours and he fixed what he said was a leak in the line inside the furnace. I missed Christmas dinner waiting in a cold house for the repair, but at least they were able to come out. All the repair and install people with the exception of the first guy who told me I needed the furnace replaced and inflated the price were prompt and polite. I did get a "Gold Club" membership too. I will never use Applewood again. Do not use this company ever!

I was sick when he left, $750 was way more then I could afford, so I had to charge this on my credit card. Then I started going on line to research the cost of the disposal and the hourly rates for plumbers. My same disposal online cost with shipping $ 105.00, according to the Company with the parts and service guarantee they have to charge $300.00, for 10 years, when the manufacturer can only guarantee for 3 years, and the labor is approx. $150.00 an hour, their charges $450.00 per hour. I contacted the company and they said they could take off $150 off the top, with out having the owner get involved. If they can do this then why would they overcharge that much in the first place. Then they said that the owner would call me back, I said it needs to be with 3 business days because if I want them to come back and take out their disposal i could only change my mind within 3 days. They either wrote down my number wrong, I repeated it to them 3 times and she said she got it right, but no call from the owner, so I had to call them back 2 times, did not want to be a bother but $751 was on the line. The owners agreed to take off $244.00 off of the $750.00 bill. I still paid $506.00 to have my garbage disposal replaced. Home depot said they could have walked me through the process for free that it does not take a plummer to do this. Very expensive lesson. Will not recommend this company to anyone, for anything. Do your homework first so that you can negotiate up front if you choose to do business with this company. Before my husband got sick, he installed our 1st disposal for about $250.00 and that lasted us 15 years.
Description of Work: We were at their mercy to have a garbage disposal replaced, ours was leaking. We thought that maybe just a few screws needed to be tightened. Not the whole unit needing replaced. The tech gave us an estimate up front, but because we did not do our homework and checked the prices on labor and garbage disposals (shame on us),I did not know what the going rate was on replacing a garbage disposal or what the rate for plumbers were. I did question the amount of $750.00, I said what if we bought one from Home Depot or Lowe's would we be able to save money and pay less. He stated that if would be about $300.00 and that we would still need to have the garbage disposal installed and that would cost $450.00. It only took from the time the tech went to his truck and get all of the tools and new garbage disposal and replaced some of the piping under our kitchen sink 45 minutes total and the total bill was $750.00.

The serviceman came within 4 hours of me calling to inspect it. They had to get a part, and came back the next day to install it. The next day, my serviceman got held up on a job and couldn't come during the 2 hour time window he gave me, and had the company call to see if I could wait or not. I had a Dr. appt so I could not wait. They were supposed to send someone else out, but they never showed. When I called back, they apologized and sent out a different serviceman completely. He was able to come and fix the water heater quickly and well. They always answered the phone and were very polite. They were the only company that only charged $29 to come out, and they did not re-charge me that fee when they came back the 2nd day. Other companies were charging aroun $100 just to come and look at the problem before fixing it, and most were unable to come until the next day. Seeing as I have a young child, and snow was on the way, hot water was a necessity. The part might have been more expensive than with competitors (it was obscure, home depot didn't even carry it), but I think it washes out in the end with the benefits of a lower service fee and quicker and more responsive service. I was most upset that the reschedule made me miss my Dr. appt, but very happy that my water heater is working.
Description of Work: They came to fix my water heater pilot light that would not stay lit. It turned out that the pilot light assembly on my very odd water heater (thank you builder who has put in cheap stuff all over my place) was broken. So they replaced it.

They were very responsive to my call and made the appointment. The person who came out was extremely courteous and helpful. He explained everything he did. He did a good job and cleaned up after himself. He also explained some other things about the hot water tank that we might want to know. And I also asked him about a future plumbing issue that I had and he explained how that would work. I have not followed up yet, but I will. Everything was excellent.

I was very impressed with Applewood. From the moment I scheduled the service on Angies List, they were calling me within minutes. They called to confirm the appointments and called minutes after the technicians left to make sure everything was okay. I would recommend Applewood for all their services. It's nice to see a company take a real interest in their customers and not try and talk them into things they don't need. I also like the way they price a job. I've had other companies price by the hour and they would sit there right in front of me and milk the clock and my pocketbook.
Description of Work: I had a problem with my back yard light and we wanted and estimate for putting a light over the garage, plus we took advantage of an "Angies List" deal for having our water heater serviced. We were very impressed with both Technicians. Daniel was the electrician that came by first. He immediately saw the problem, fortunately we did have a new light fixture to install. Upon looking in the garage he noticed other issues that we were not aware of and he gave us options on how to fix the problem plus he quoted us for everything. There was no hard selling or inventing issues to make more money, These were legitimate issues. He explained everything thoroughly. He was very professional and friendly....and a pet lover. William, the plumber came by a little later and again very professional and friendly....and a pet lover. He got down in our icky crawl space and serviced our water heater. We have no idea about water heaters or things like that and he explained everything about the water heater and about expansion and rust but said our water heater is in excellent condition, he also informed us of an angle issue with the sump pump pipe. Again, no hard selling, lots of good information and very professional. They both wore there booties!!! And were on time, in fact, Dan was a little earlier and they called to see if he could come early. We did have a little sticker shock with the prices but the customer service is excellent. I also like the fact they call and send an email with the picture of the technician and the creditials so you know who your letting in your home.

Furnace is about 20 years old. The furnace stopped heating. Applewood came out and gave us an estimate of about $10,000 to replace the furnace with the 90% efficeint. We didn't have to replace the furnace immediately, so we could call around for other estimates. Found a better furnace at a better price.

Just wanted a straight up furnace tune-up and filter change, but I got a gold club membership, an estimate on a humidifier, a thumbs down note without elaboration, on one of their furnace check list items, an incorrect note saying that he had replaced the filter, and another incorrect note saying that he had replaced the batteries on a CO/smoke detector. I did talk to the tech over the phone (my daughter was at the house) and, when I asked about the filter, the tech claimed that we needed a non-standard filter, which they don't carry. When I asked whether he could go pick up the filter, or come back another day with the correct filter, he said no. When I asked whether they would would make an effort next year to carry that filter for my service call, he said no. Hardly a paragon of good customer service. He did credit me $20 for the cost of the filter, but that was after much haggling. Followup: after reading this review, a very nice lady from Applewood called and wanted to make things right. She refunded the entire cost of the service.

I had a toilet leaking in a rental. Renter was not sure what the problem was. I called applewood and agreed to pay a tech to troubleshoot. He advised me that the toilet was leaking between the tank and the bowl. I had 3 options he could chase down seals as it isn't parts they stocked and replace them. He estimated about $350. I could buy a new toilet and he would replace the old one with the one I purchased for $700, or he could sell me a toilet and do the work for $1,200. None of these seemed palatable so I left work to investigate for myself. The bolts that held the tank to the bowl were not even hand tight. I tightened them and the leak stopped. The technician did not even mention or investigate the bolts. I could have spent upto $1,200 to fix loose bolts.

The switch was replaced in less than ten minutes. The guy came up and told me that there was a gas leak in my furnace and that the plumbing to my new water heater, which was less than two months old, was a hack job and needed to be replaced. The estimate was $3800. I asked him if he was going to red tag my furnace because of the leak and that I would be calling Public Service right away. He started backing down about the leak, it wasn't bad, actually not bad at all but the work still needed to be done. He saw an old lady alone and he was taking advantage of me. What a scam! They get a commission on what they up sell and it was disgusting. I knew enough to know he was trying to frighten me. What do other elderly people do??? Shame on this company. No ethics what so ever. Will never do business with them again.

In the middle of the night, my furnace stopped working and it would not heat, so I called Applewood early in the morning. I called at 6:00 AM and was pleasantly greeted and given an appointment time. Applewood gave a two hour window for arrival time, between 12:00 and 2:00pm. Applewood's HVAC service technician, JR Miller, arrived at about 1:20. JR was very polite, very professional, and quickly diagnosed the problem. The pressure switch needed to be replaced. After diagnosing the problem, JR gave me time to decide if I wanted him to do the repair or if I wanted to go with a different company. I decided to have JR do the work. He was able to quickly get the part out of his truck, installed it, and checked to be sure it operated properly. I received a 2 year warranty on the work. JR also inspected my furnace during the time he worked on my furnace. JR spent about 1 hr. at my home. He cleaned up, was polite, friendly, and knowledgable. The service call was $29.00. The cost of the pressure switch and installation (installation and checking to be sure it worked only took about 15 minutes total) was $460. The price of the pressure switch and installation was between $80-140 more than one other highly rated HVAC company. This other company had given me a quote of $365 for part and service. I chose to go with Applewood because JR was already at my house and I felt he was a trustworthy professional, even though the repair was going to be more expensive than the highly rated competitor. I am now sitting in my home as it heats back up from a chilly 57 degrees. JR did a great job and I would definitley recommend him.
Description of Work: The pressure switch on my furnace needed to be replaced. My furnace is in the attic. JR, the service technician was familiar with attic furnaces and had no problem working on it. He did an excellent job, easily and efficiently repaired it, and I would highly recommend him.

It went well and we hope to have no more trouble. If we do, the warranty is still in effect. They were very responsive and came within a couple of hours after our call.
Description of Work: A few days ago we had a blocked laundry drain and called Applewood to come and clear it. Mike Christianson came and soon had it opened and seemingly problem solved. When we paid the bill, the invoice included a one-year warranty on the work. Now the drain again overflowed and we called them again. This time Mike spent one and one-half hours cleaning all the pipes thoroughly, so hopefully, we will have no more trouble. Because of the one year warranty from the previous call, this one did not cost us anything, thus making it very cost-effective for us.

Description of Work: Previous electric contractor reneged on bid. Applewood came to the rescue to complete the job of replacing panels prior to the house being sold. However, after being contacted by EXCEL energy for negligence in getting passed city inspection , I called the city to arrange inspection without having the permit. Applewood sent it to me after the meter was placed on the house. Apparently there was confusion on where to send the permit..
