We were turned off because he seemed to make a diagnosis so quickly, and was ready to sell us a new furnace on the spot. He also gave estimates of $6000 to 8000 for a new one without doing any calculations or measurements, 1 1/2 or 2 times what we eventually paid. He was not thorough and not clear. We waited to talk to A and B Mechanical who fixed it that night and eventually sold us a new furnace for a reasonable price. The difference in professional demeanor and trust was night and day between this company's representative and A and B.
Description of Work: Examined our furnace and said it was too large and too old and that we needed a new one. He said the control module needed replacment.

Applewood was easy to schedule with. They were able to offer same day service, which was great. They also showed up right on time, which was also great. The tech came in and asked me what the problem was, which was a little frustrating because I was asked for and had given a detailed account of the issue I was having, including serial numbers and installation dates of the equipment I had. The tech didn't have any of this information. Not a huge deal, but it would be great if he started the appt. off with "I understand your furnace is acting up" instead of, "tell me why I'm here." Anyway, I showed him to the furnace and he began his diagnostic. After about 15 minutes, he came up and proceeded to list a series of things he found wrong with the unit, and that I should have replaced because they "could" fail. In all, it was about $2600.00 worth of repairs. But oh, he did mention that I had the option of saving 15% by signing up for their "Gold Service Plan." We asked for a breakdown of parts vs. labor and he wouldn't give it to us. Turns out, many of the parts are incredibly inexpensive. I know they're a business. I have no problem paying reasonable markup and a cost for the labor and service call, but I feel like their prices were incredibly high for the service they were providing. Among the quoted solutions they offered: New Igniter ($350) New blower motor ($1150) New gas valve, flexline and flame sensor ($1350) To put it in perspective, here's how much I priced those parts out at: Igniter ($20.00) Blower motor ($150.00) Gas valve, Flame Sensor etc ($110.00) Sounds grim right? Well at the end of all of it, the tech certified my furnace OK for operation in it's current state with NO repairs. At the end of the day, I wouldn't have written a bad review if: Applewood had told me why my furnace was short cycling, or at least provided actionable information relating to the problem at hand. As soon as he left, the problem continued. They had been honest. The tech told me he found the flame sensor dirty. I had pulled it and cleaned it myself (it's a single screw and a wire). It wasn't dirty, it was fine. They had provided any guidance on what was necessary at the time to fix the problem. They did none of that. Here's a list of things we can repair. Some of them may work, some of them are probably unnecessary. Who's the professional here? Resolution: I decided to get a second opinion and went to an online HVAC question and answer site. I paid $23.00 and a technician walked me through several different diagnostics to figure out what the issue was. He recommended I replace my thermostat, as it seemed like the unit was starting to go bad causing irregular behavior in the furnace. So, $25.00 later, I replaced it and the furnace is working great. Shouldn't the tech from Applewood have been able to do the same? Have provided the same level of guidance and service? I can't help but think so. And I don't think I'll be able to trust them again.
Description of Work: Applewood was hired to diagnose a short cycling issue we were having with our furnace.

This was for a rental. My tenant called and said water was leaking under the sink. I could not go over my self so I called Applewood. The tech did call me and get my ok before he did the work. At that time I should have turned it down, but we all know that water can cause a lot of damage so I gave him the go-ahead. This weekend when I could go over to see what he did I was not happy with the PRICE the work was fine. I got charged $410.10 to replace two sections of the drain. I want it to be Known that I do not mind paying a professional for their skills, however $410 for at most 2 hours work is not right. I will never use them again and I will tell everyone to stay away from this company.

The technician had to check the electrical throughout the home to diagnose the issue. They were very responsive and came out early in the morning. He was a very efficient worker and did a thorough inspection. He did a great job and was very pleasant to work with. He told me to call back with any other issues and they would be happy to take care of it for me. I thought the pricing was a little high but the quality of service was worth it. They did come out on a Sunday so that may be why it cost more.

The technician arrived, checked out the system, saw the leak that had to be repaired. He quoted $500 to fix the leak. It seemed high, but I was in a tough spot because we had been without heat for 2+ days. So I agreed, hoping this fix would be the end of it. In aprox 40 minutes he'd replaced the gaskets (little rubber pieces) - one was pinched, one was worn. He had the system back on, it wasn't leaking, and the pipe coming out of the top of the boiler had very hot water in it. He collected $538 for his 45 minutes and left. However, the boiler still was not working 100% because none of the registers got even remotely warm! Our heat wasn't working, and he left without the heat working! I did not realize this until hours later when it was still cold everywhere. I have 3 major problems here * first, I paid him $500 for maybe $3 in parts and 40 minutes of work - exorbitant * second, I was charged the trip fee even though we went with Applewood for the service! It was $500 + the $69 fee!! * third, he left without fixing our main concern - ITS DECEMBER AND WE DONT HAVE HEAT!! I called someone else to come the next day to fix it. They found that water was not getting into the boiler, which meant water wasn't getting pushed through the rest of the house. In 45 min of troubleshooting the other company found and fixed the problem. ...and didn't leave until we had heat in December. I paid $120 for his time and expertise. The Applewood guy quoted me $1200 for a new pump as his next step. I'm glad I did not call them back.

Applewood estimated that it would cost $2350 to get all three fireplaces running properly. Their estimate recommended that all three fireplaces should get and quot;properand quot; milivolt fireplace switches to be installed at $363 each, and that the pilot assembly should be cleaned for $247 each. Their estimate also stated that one of the fireplace's thermopile and thermocouple should be replaced. The cost to repair the thermopile and thermocouple, along with the cleaning was estimated to be $768. This seemed outrageously high to me, and I wasn't completely convinced of the technician's expertise. I had The Gas Connection come out and work on the fireplaces instead. The Gas Connection's price for cleaning the three fireplaces was about $279 -- $179 for the first one and about $100 for the other two -- compared to $741 for Applewood. The Gas Connection found that all three ordinary (not milivolt) wall switches worked, though one of them worked sluggishly and was replaced for $9, plus a few minutes labor. The thing is, ordinary wall switches work fine, though they need to be replaced from time to time. These ordinary wall switches can be purchased for a few dollars and replaced by anyone with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. This is compared to $363 that Applewood would have charged, for a part available on the internet for about $20-30. And, Applewood's diagnosis was incorrect in other respects. On one of the fireplaces, Applewood said that the thermopile and thermocouple needed to be replaced. But, according to The Gas Connection, the thermocouple, valve, and pilot tubes needed to be replaced. The valve was not up to spec, and wasn't functional anyway. The Gas Connection did all of the work for $830 -- about a third of Applewood's estimate. So, in summary, I was not happy with Applewood because of the outrageously high estimate for switches that weren't even needed, the misdiagnosis of parts that needed to be replaced, and the high cost of cleaning the pilot assemblies. I have also had electrical work done by Applewood, though, which was done professionally and for a reasonable cost. Perhaps the problem is that Applewood's expertise is in heating and electrical, and that they should stay away from gas fireplaces.
Description of Work: Evaluation and estimate of work on three gas fireplaces to get them up and running properly. One fireplace functioned if you pressed the switch a few times. The other two didn't work at all.

The guy came out and looked around. He tried to sell me one price for $5000 and one for $7000. It was a ridiculous amount. They wanted to replace everything and it was top-notch. I decided not to do that. I wanted to wait to get another idea. I found out that the low water pressure was because of the filter in the faucets. The faucets were clogged up. He was a very nice guy and he was competent.

I scheduled them to come service our air conditioner. The original appointment was for Thursday. Three hours prior to the time they were to arrive I got a telephone call cancelling the appointment. I had already made arrangements to be home so this was not convenient, but I went ahead and re-scheduled for the next morning for a window of 8:00 to 10:00. At 8:40 they called and said they couldn't be there until 10:30. Again, I had made arrangements to be home. I had another appointment which required me to leave no later than 10:45, which did not allow enough time for the service. I have used them before and they did good work, but don't expect them to respect your time.

I had a bathroom sink that was hardly draining and paid Applewood over $300.00 to fix it in September of 2003. I have called Applewood several times because it has not drained properly since the first service call in September. Applewood has sent out plumbers that sold me an expensive cleaner that is private labeled to Applewood that did nothing to help the sink drain and the only thing that it helped drain was my bank account. One plumber said that the sink did not drain because my water pressure is too high. I was ready to write the $300.00 off and pay another pluming company to fix the drain but I decided to call Applewood one last time as I have had a lot of other work done by Applewood and have not had problems with the other jobs. Yesterday May 15 2012 a plumber named Mike Christianson was dispatched to my home and unlike the previous plumbers that Applewood had sent he was able to get the drain flowing and did not try to sell us anything that we did not need or want. I hope that someone at Applewood plumbing will let him know that because he came to my home and did the work the way it should have been done back in September and did not try to sell us anything we will continue to call Applewood for our plumbing service and refer you to friends and neighbors.

They did come out and give us a quote. They were a little late in getting out here. I had to call them rather than they call me several times. I wanted to do a project at my mother’s house. I had them come out first because I used them in the past and I wanted them to give me a quote both on the electrical work and the plumbing work. The plumbing they quoted me was somewhere between $3,000 to $4,000 to do what I consider to be a really minor amount of plumbing work. I’m in the designing construction business and I’ve been in designing construction for probably over 36 years so I have a fairly good idea of what the work should cost so these guys came on the plumbing and gave me a price and I thought that price was outrageous. I told the guy and he said that he is sorry that my expectations are for a lower price and I said it’s not my expectations and I said I’ve been in the business for years and years. I said I don’t have a problem expecting a higher price than I think and I said what I do have a serious problem with is a price that I consider to be outrageous insulting and far beyond what I would consider to be an industry standard for the amount of work to be done. I called in another couple of plumbing companies that I was referred to give me estimates and their overall price of the work was $900 and that’s about what I thought it would be. On the electrical work, when he left, there are 2 parts to the work. They quoted me a price of almost $8,000. I told the guy that I was really pissed off about the plumbing quote they gave me and I was even more insulted and outraged by the electrical price they gave me. I was so mad that I laid into him about how I thought their estimating was ridiculous. I asked him to give me a price breakdown on time, labor and materials and he said they don’t get the job that way. I said that they probably go to older people homes and give them prices like this and they don’t know any better and they go ahead and accept their work and they have done nothing but ripping these people off. I said I’m going to call his boss and so I did. I called the company after he left and I really laid into them about how outrageous I thought their pricing was and she said that’s the way they do jobs and they’ve been pretty competitive in the past and I said this wasn’t competitive at all and she said to let her know about other quotes and I said all right. The other independent contractors approved by Angie’s List and both of their quotes were like $20 apart and both of those prices coming for what we had done was like $2,460 versus $8,000. It was identical work and I had identical scopes and so I have absolutely nothing good to say about them. I almost felt like they were robbing me. They were nice enough here. I think that they are professional. I almost attempted to call the district attorney’s office here because I was so furious about the estimates they gave us. They were here close to when they said they were supposed to be. If that’s the way they estimate, they can’t be very professional.

I live in Co Springs and rental is in Denver. When tenant called and said the drain was leaking. I had her go look and give me details so I could pinpoint problem. When I asked Applewood to give me a ball park figure to change out the drain assembly they said they charge $29 to go out and bid by job not hourly. They were very responsive and said they could send out a plumber within the time frame my tenant needed. I am a average handy gal. Having bought a popup assembly before I knew they run under $20 and at the Restore cost $2. I thought worst case it would run me maybe $80 in labor as it is literally a 30 minute joband acirc;?and brvbar;tops. I was blown away when the LOWEST BID was $477. I chose to decline their proposaland acirc;?and brvbar;.I bought the part at Restore, took my plumbers putty and tools and made the hour drive. The P trap is fine and the task took far less time than the drive. (Would have paid $80 to avoid the hassle.)Here is my take awayand acirc;?and brvbar;.Applewood must get their business from desperate people that have absolutely no idea what something should cost and the rest from the $29 they charge to come out. After paying someone to come out it is counter intuitive to reject the proposal as you are back to square one and having to pay yet another to come out. This model must work for them.I wonder what they charge to put in a totally new faucetand acirc;?and brvbar;..Oh, that would be the $872 bid!!!!!Scary to think some people would pay this. From now on I am only going to go with plumbers that charge hourly plus parts.
Description of Work: Provider came out to my rental property for $29 to bid on replacing the pop up assembly under bathroom sink. Plumber also said the p-t trap "Showed signs of leaking". Low bid was $477. All parts would be top of the line and would have a 2 year 100% parts/labor warranty…..option #2 $872…….option #3 $662

From the moment he walked in, the technician started listing problems. When all was said and done, he had discovered "several cracks" in my heat exchanger (the death blow to any furnace), a gas line that needed to be replaced because it was the wrong size, insufficient combustible air in my furnace closet, and several other smaller items. He showed me fuzzy pictures on his phone and claimed they were images of cracks in my heat exchanger. He then wrote up a bid to replace my furnace for over $8k. He also mentioned that he recommended we immediately stop using the furnace and made several references to the dangerous carbon monoxide dangers to my wife and young children. When I asked him to show me the cracks in the heat exchanger, he got nervous and started stammering about how they were "hard to see". Upon my insistence, he showed me where to look inside my furnace. I did not see any cracks anywhere. I had a second heating and cooling company inspect my furnace and gas line. They confirmed the gas line was the correct size and properly installed and even showed me the code that determined proper sizes. They determined that the furnace had plenty of combustible air (as it has for the last 32 years). Finally, the carefully inspected the heat exchanger, inviting me to watch and explaining what they were doing as they were doing it. They found no cracks. *None*. Finally, they cleaned the furnace, tested mechanical functions, ran a diagnostic test, and installed a new air filter. The Applewood "free furnace inspection and tuneup" was nothing more than a sales call and a scam at that. Preying on the fears of the average person and giving them false information for the sake of a sale is morally shameful and generally detestable. Plus, the technician never did clean or service my furnace, which is why I invited him into my home.

The technician estimated that the work would take around two hours. Quote: $976.21 which consisted of $285 to replace two shut off valves, $414 to replace 10 feet of galvanized pipe with copper, $246 min for labor. (So the first $285 and $414 did not already include labor so must be the cost of the materials). I questioned the tech to explain what was for parts and whats was for labor, and was told not to look at it like that, but to look at the total price which had to cover the cost of advertising etc and these were fixed prices. He also noticed my water pressure was high, and recommended I have a water pressure regulator installed for an additional $1575.22. I checked materials costs online and ten feet of copper pipe costs about $15 and a water pressure regulator costs around $50. With a couple of hours of labor I would expect the line repair to cost between $250 - $300. I had to pay him $29 for the quote, but this would have been waived if I had them do the work, which I have declined!
Description of Work: Applewood technician gave me a written quote for replacing 10 feet of galvanized pipe with copper.

It’s like they wanted to force you to buy more materials. Because we purchased a deal, it didn't feel like they were putting their heart & soul into the job. I wouldn't hire them again.
Description of Work: I bought a big deal for a Toilet Tune-up.
