This is the second time I have used McCarley. Lee did a great job for me the first time about a year ago and so I called him back to do this minor drainage job for me. The quality of his work is great. He is always on the job and is a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend McCarley Concrete.

I explained that a licensed engineer designed the footings for the wall & said the construction would not effect the integrity of the house. He wasn't convinced & said I should get another engineer. Bad attitude. I have since received an acceptable estimate from another contractor.
Description of Work: I called this masonry contractor to give me an estimate for replacement of a retaining wall & driveway slab at my house. I sent PDF's of the completed & stamped & approved by the building dept. engineering drawings by email. When he came out to look at the wall he said he had not look at the engineering drawings. He took a look at my wall & slab, which is next to my house, & said he wouldn't even consider doing the construction because of liability concerns regarding the house moving when the existing wall was removed.

Everything went great! We discovered that 75 years ago automobile cam shafts were used for rebar which slowed things down a little. There is a patio area in the back yard that he poured concrete and covered with brick. In addition, there was concrete that was part of the block wall fence that was above ground level so he made this area a narrow "step". Another area we did was to replace a "sidewalk" type slab area were lawn sprinkler pipes were installed. He also took care of some missing stucco in several areas as well as several other small improvements. All in all it was a wonderful job, looks great and it was a plesant surprise with all the "challenges" of the job it was not more expensive. Lee kept in frequent contact and was always easy to get a hold of. Good man!
Description of Work: I had an older type driveway with only two strips of concrete. Lee removed the two strips and replaced it with wall to wall concrete.

Lee McCarley met all his promises and stayed exactly within his estimate. Our brick patio and fire pit with brick benches looks great and get lots of compliments. His recommended plumber/electrician integrated his work schedule with Lee and all came off without a hitch. Lee runs a tight ship and all the work flowed very well with no delays. You will not be disappointed by Lee, he makes sure of that.

It went very well. He was very good at planning ahead so that the work flowed expeditiously without any down time. The job progressed very well and his work was very good. They only delay that occurred was when the city officials missed an appointment to sign off on the work. Overall, he is a hard working and skilled craftsmen. Everything looks beautiful.
Description of Work: They demolished a 50 foot long, 5 feet deep, and 3 feet high planter. They had to haul away all the volume of earth that planter contained. Then put up a new retaining wall that was 50 feet high and 4 feet wide. They also had to do this under all the regulations of the city.

Lee was professional, on time, reasonably priced and most importantly, extremely capable. My yard had hazardous steps on a very steep hill. These needed removing and I needed something sturdy and wide that would enable me to descend safely to my lower yard at night (when my dogs like to cause a ruckus .) Lee assessed the situation, and suggested a safer location for the stairs. He knew how to reinforce them properly so that erosion and slippage of the hill would not be an issue. He arrived when he said he would, left me yard neat in-between visits, and worked efficiently. I would definitely use him again.

Lee did outstanding work on a very difficult job. The "caps" on the tops of the concrete pillars in front of our home were not "caps" at all, but were made to look like caps through the use of large concrete crown molding installed around the tops of the pillars, so that the top of the pillar appeared to be part of a "cap." We had placed a large concrete pot with plants on top of each pillar, and the water run-off from these pots had caused the make-shift "caps" to deteriorate. We had purchased 5 beautiful, new, "real" concrete pillar caps to replace the make-shift ones. But the company who manufactured the caps does not provide installation service, so we went to Angie's List and found McCarley Concrete and Masonry. Also, the company who made the caps assumed that the pillars were hollow and drilled drainage holes in the new caps. When Lee discovered that the large pillars were actually solid, he filled the drilled holes with grout (provided by the cap manufacturer). Lee was very professional and highly skilled in masonry repair. Our pillars now look much better than they did with the make-shift caps, and I'm sure will better withstand water run-off. Also, the work he did to repair our landing looks as good as new. Toward the end of our job, Lee experienced an very serious family emergency that took him away for several days. The work was nearly complete, and I'm sure that we would have fallen to the bottom of the priority list for many other service providers experiencing such a disruption. But Lee is highly professional and ethical, and returned to complete the job as quickly as he was able. We sincerely appreciate Lee's skill, professionalism, and commitment, and without question would recommend him to anyone needing his talents and services.
Description of Work: 1) Removed and hauled away 5 deteriorating make-shift concrete pillar caps and around 8" of concrete from top of each of 5 pillars 2) Installed 5 new concrete pillar caps 3) Removed cracked concrete in walkway landing and replaced with new 4) Drilled hole in iron gate and installed toggle bolt into concrete wall so that gate would operate once again 5) Grouted drainage holes drilled in caps

I had three local contractors bid on this job. Lee's quote was competitive. My primary reason for using Lee was because of the great review's on Angie's List. The biggest challenge on this job were the inspectors for the City of RPV; they caused us more problems that we should have had to deal with. Lee worked through these problems. Lee was on the job every day. I have never seen a contractor so dedicated to his profession. Lee has returned a few times to work on projects for my neighbor and these jobs have been done well also.
Description of Work: Lee McCarley did the following projects for me: 1) 60 foot retaining wall (concrete block with stucco finish) 2) 3 separate areas of pavers 3) concrete slab walkway with drainage. During the course of the these projects Lee had several challenges (including RPV city inspectors). Lee and his crew did an exceptional job. The quality and workmanship was excellent. In several areas he exceeded my expectations! I seldom write reviews for Angie's List, but for Lee McCarley, I am pleased to do so. I highly recommend Lee McCarley

We were extremely happy with Lee McCarley (owner). He was there from start to finish. We asked three firms for estimates; Lee's was the best. Lee not only supervises the work, he does much of the work himself. This is not something you will get when you hire a big firm. Our neighbor is a professional contractor, and even he was impressed with the precision and quality of Lee's workmanship. The wall that Lee installed for us is beautiful and makes our house standout! Lee kept us informed every step of the way, and was always prompt and polite. He even went beyond the bounds of the job several times -- removing what was left of a tree after the big impersonal firm we had hired to remove the tree SAID it was finished (but it wasn't). If we ever have another job to do that Lee could handle, he'd be the first person we'd call. If you want quality work at a reasonable price, we highly recommend McCarley Concrete and Masonry.
Description of Work: 1) Removed & hauled away 50 ft long, 12 inches wide & 16 inches deep of dirt. 2) Installed #4 vertical rebar every 24 inches. 3) Poured concrete at 2500 psi for new foundation. 4) Installed blockwall 50 ft long, 32 inches high & 6 inches wide. 5) Horizontal #4 placed at the top of wall. 6) Wall grouted with concrete. 7) Installed colonial caps on top of the wall and stucco both sides of wall to match house.

All in all, less the weekend, the job was completed as promised in 5 days, including completely cleaning the job site. Me and my wife are completly happy with the results and would highly recommend Lee and McCarley Concrete. Thanks again Lee! Look forward to you doing our driveway in the near future. Greg and Sharon.
Description of Work: Scope of work: Tear down old patio cover and miss matched concrete pad (800 sq ft) and lay new concrete pad (1000 sq ft) in preparation for new patio cover. Estimates: Got 3 estimates. The first one was from a patio cover company. They gave me an estimate ($11,000), which seemed way over priced. They said they sub it out, which immediately turned me off. The next estimate was from a company based out of OC and seemed more reasonably priced ($8,000). They recommended I go with 3k PSI concrete, which is stronger and because I was going to reinstall a patio cover. They estimated the job would take about a week. The final company was McCarley Concrete. I emailed my request for bid and got a reply with in 24 hours. Lee (owner) gave me an initial quote of ($7300) also with 3k PSI concrete. After I got the estimate, I told him I was an Angie's List member and he immediately took off $500, making the estimate $6800. Lee said he could finish in 5 days. I went with McCarley Concrete because their estimate was fair, correspondences were timely, local to my home, positive Angie's List reviews, and he could complete the job in only 5 days. Work: Day 1 - After scheduling and rescheduling (delay by one day due to rain) Lee and his crew (6 guys) showed up right on time at 7:30 am. We reviewed the job and within minutes they began demo'ing my patio. I left for work and came home for lunch to check on the job. To my surprise, they had the patio cover completely torn down and about 50 % of the concrete dug out. Lee came over and explained what they had done and what was left. By the end of day 1, they had torn down the patio cover, dug out 800 sq ft of concrete, and had it loaded on to a truck to haul away. Day 2-4 - Lee and his main worker laid rock and sand to level everything. They also laid the rebar and made forms for my step. During day 3 Lee found that one side of my concrete wall foundation was set high and the concrete would not lay properly. After discussing our options we decided to make a small step to hide the foundation for the wall. We agreed $200 for the additional work for the form and concrete. Day 5 & 6 - were Saturday and Sunday and they do not work on the weekends. Friday night he left me a message that the measurements I gave him only came out to 850 sq ft. I checked my measurements and my notes and found that the 2nd contractor had written the wrong #'s. We both felt at fault as he admitted he should have double checked. I felt bad and told him I would pay for the mistake (I estimated it to be about $1600 more). Lee ended up splitting the difference $800. However, I had a few questions, which I had emailed Lee on Saturday and to my surprise he said he would stop by later that morning. He and his wife stopped by after breakfast and he answered all my questions and said he would be out Monday morning to pour the concrete. This really impressed me as many people/companies would say we can talk on Monday or at their schedule, but Lee is not like that. He is genuine person who takes pride in his work and customers he services. Day 7 - The concrete was laid with no complications. Lee advised he would be by the following day to take off the forms, which he did.

After getting about 4 other quotes we decided on McCarley because his price seemed fairand he responded quickly and he sounded like he pretty much new what he was doing. When we were finally ready to proceed I contacted him by email, he responded in a reasonable time and we set up a date for the work. He and his helper arived on time went promptly to work and were done within a few hours where we thought it would at least take all day. It was repaired expertly and it looks great though the color of the block could not be matched which we already knew. We definitely use his services again.

I was very impressed by Lee and McCarley. They are clean and professional. We bid the job with other concrete contractors and McCarley was competitive. Lee walked us through the entire job, and was flexible with our needs. We have a large patio area with a diamond pattern in the concrete. We did not want to demolish our entire patio, but only the cracked areas around our back porch. Lee was able to tie in the pattern and harmonize the newly poured back porch (that became smaller) with the patio. The 10 x 10 planter box/seating wall was added to the middle of our patio area. Lee coordinated with the electrician to run electrical and lighting to the planter. The planter is substantial and was built with a 13 inch deep cap for seating. We feel like our patio area received a complete face lift. Lee was always on time and came the days he said he would be at our job. He cleaned up after each day's work, and we feel like he treated our job as though he was working on his own home. I always check Angie's List for recent comments on the contractors we have used. I have never been disappointed. I fully believe that McCarley Concrete deserves an A+ rating. I would highly recommend McCarley to friends and family in the South Bay/Long Beach area.
Description of Work: McCarley Concrete demolished and replaced our back porch, and demolished and re-poured cracked areas of our back patio. Additionally, they built a 10 x 10 foot planter box/seating wall with built in lighting. Lee was very prompt and professional in creating a proposal for our work. We coordinated the concrete and masonry work around the replacement of our back french doors. The back porch had been poured improperly (by another contractor) when we did a 2003 addition to our home, so the porch had to be demolished before the french doors could be replaced. Lee coordinated the demolition work and then came back to re-pour everything.
