The work was done very professional, he was on time. He did everything he said he would do, and just did a very good work.
Description of Work: He put a 4 foot Retaining Wall in the backyard
Lee was quick to respond and his bid was very fair. Ours was a difficult job with lots of roots. He was very thorough and the retaining wall and walkway look great! He also laid pipes under the new walkway to make it easier for the gardener to install sprinklers. Lee is very knowledgeable, offers good suggestions, takes pride in his work and pays attention to detail. We would definitely hire him again!
Description of Work: Replaced a 3-4 foot retaining wall around perimeter of front yard (about 70 linear feet), finished with brown-coat and stucco. Also replaced a 30 foot cement walkway and fixed some brickwork around the walkway edge. (Note: I think our job was much bigger than a regular retaining wall due to extensive root-damage from a giant ash tree.)

We cannot be more pleased with Lee's craftsmanship. This was a very complex project using a slot cut method recommended by our soil engineer. We met with 9 different contractors and Lee was the only one that had experience with slot cut. The soil engineer and 2 city inspectors were very complimentary when they come out to inspect the site. The entire project required approximately 18 inspections throughout the 3 phases. The city inspector commented that the excavations were the cleanest he has ever seen; the grading inspector indicated that drainage was done very well; and the soil engineer said that the job was done to his specifications and that he now has another contractor that he can recommend for future slot cut projects. He is a hands-on contractor and his pricing was very competitive. We will definitely use his services for future projects.

This is the second time I've used Lee's services, we were very pleased with his work the first time, were happy to hire him again, and once again he didn't let us down. The work went smooth, quickly, and the wall looks great. If I even need masonry work again I wouldn't hesitate to hire him a third time.

Lee was an absolute professional. He arrived exactly when he said he would arrive; and he communicated with us every step, so we never felt in the dark. The quality of his work was quite impressive; especially considering the cost. Speaking of the cost - based on Lee's finished work, and his professionalism, this was easily the best valued contractor I had the pleasure of hiring in quite some time. There were not hidden cost - the job cost what Lee originally estimated. I would not hesitate to use Lee again for any future work.

Communication was very easy and clear, and Lee was very prompt with his estimate and his scheduling. The work was basically done in 2 days, and there were no problems. The porch looks perfect, there was minimal impact on the plants in the yard even tho there was a lot of concrete debris as a result of the demolition. Cleanup was very thorough. I am really pleased!

Warned by his own post on Angie's List, he was booked up from New Year's to late March. We asked him to bid anyway, accepting that delay. He came out and saw/designed the job quickly, and gave us his bid, which we accepted. I liked his demeanor, and willingness to listen well and react honestly. Late March came around, and one day an hour or two before leaving on a week's vacation I got his email announcing he was ready to start the next day. Very short notice, I had to stop him to reschedule. So we agreed to start about when we did, at the beginning of May. My job took two days... one to prepare the site and put forms into place, and the second to pour the concrete and coddle it until it set up. A third day was to have the guard rails made, and installed. He kept me informed the whole time (I was at home), and worked as continuously as practicality permitted. The end result was completely first class, and just what we agreed on, at the original bid price. I would certainly hire him again if my schedule permitted. I think he perpetually has a backlog of work to do, so be patient.
Description of Work: Small job to add a concrete porch and ramp in our back yard for handicapped access. Job was a 4' by 4' flat top, with a 6' ramp, fitted with safety rail on one side. Added another small safety rail on our other back porch.

Sent message through Angies List and received response next day with app cost and when he can do the work. This is the first time when I have received response so fast when requesting quote. Although they did not come out and inspect the job, they had given me approximate cost from my description of what was to be done. Since they are busy, I am in still search of some one who can do the job sooner.

The service was excellent. The staff was excellent and very professional. They left the area very clean. We did have a delay, but it was due to weather. It rained for like three weeks before they could get in there and do it. I kept draining the foundation so they would be able to come in and pour the concrete. It finally cleared up in January and they came in. So, I say they were very prompt.

Lee McCarley was a joy to work with. His price was very competitive. He was well organized and efficient with his time. Lee started and finished the job exactly when he said he would. He cleaned up the entire work area every day. He was all business but very pleasant at the same time. The job was done by Lee and a helper and they both worked each day of the 4 day job. He brought in an electrician to do the electrical part of the job which was done exactly when Lee said it would be. Lee made one mistake in concrete laying which I was anxious about because I had contractors in the past argue with me about why a mistake they made was a better way to go. But when I pointed it out to him the answer was: Don't worry about it, we'll fix it tomorrow. And he did. Lee, his helper Samuel and the electrician Martin were all great to work with. I would definitely use Lee McCarley again.

He's not the cheapest but he seems to know what he's doing. He is meticulous, detail-oriented and very clean. They came in on time and finished on time. I didn't have a drop of concrete out of place and the work was worth the price. They're unbelievable. I have no complaints and I'm thrilled with them.
Description of Work: They re-poured the back patio and walkways and did concrete pouring. They designed it and had to work around the new foundation equipment that had just been put in. They rebuilt a small portion of the block wall that had been pushed over by the foundation work and helped my husband refit another one. The work looks good.

He was very thorough in planning the height, depth, and slant of the steps, which was a difficult job based on the location and old wooden steps that used to be there. There were about 10 steps. (I don't live there anymore, and I can't recall.) The only reason I didn't give them an "A" was that the "clean-up" was virtually non-existent. I was sweeping piles of sand for DAYS that were part of the final smoothing as the stairs dried. That sand was everywhere -- behind huge planter pots, all over my yard and patio, etc. And I was digging pieces of old cement blocks out of the garden, pieces of old wood that were demolished and left there by the first guys I hired/fired (I guess that wasn't the responsibility of McCarly, but it would have been nice if he'd mentioned it, or asked, or offered--I'd have paid him for that time). But that said, once the clean-up was done, and (almost) forgotten, I was left with a really good set of cement stairs. And I would hire him again, but would mention the clean-up issue right to start with!
Description of Work: Tore down cinderblock mess - was to be stairs by someone else. They didn't know what they were doing, so I fired them and hired McCarley. He was prompt, professional, and created very good cement stairs.

My total loss was at least $5,000.00 for the pebbles, gravel-lok, some gravel below, material liner, and my dedicated time getting all of this ready. All destroyed in 3 hours. I researched Angie's List very carefully and found this contractor to have the best reviews for the type of work I needed. Our communication via email prior to the day of work went very smoothly, giving me confidence in their honor and reliability. We reviewed the project, the needed equipment, the procedure, etc.. many times prior to the day, again building up the expected confidence. This is why I gave them a B in Responsiveness. They showed up on time but forgot the gravel compactor. I had them go back and get it. This is why I gave the a C in Punctuality. Following some conversation, I found out they were intentionally a man short, only two people doing what was quoted a 3 man job; requiring me to put in more physical labor in the areas away from the finish work and not able to make sure the quality was being put where needed. One person was mixing the pebbles with the coating material, spilling it all over the place, not being precise with the ratio (costing me more money). The other person spreading the pebbles by himself across 570 square feet, up to 10 feet wide, resulting in a very uneven surface, many ridges, valleys, missed patches all together, and no way for me to have found them until 24 hours later once dried. I emailed the boss and his response was that "he did the best job he could". Completely unacceptable! I'm the one that has to live with this! I graded the pricing a F for the reason that I ended up doing so much of their labor, and paying a hefty amount for two men working only 3 hours. There were comments made through the day by the boss that clearly identified he had no honor in being here and more concern to rush through this in order to be somewhere else several hours later. We finished in just 3 hours. Plenty of time for him to be at his next event in plenty of time, but sadly leaving me with a very poorly completed project. Overall, They completely deserve an F for the rush, lack of quality, lack of concern, lack of honor, lack of professionalism.
Description of Work: The job was to mix 3/8" rounded pebbles with a coating material in a concrete mixer, then pour via wheelbarrow, spread, compress, trowel, smooth, edge, etc... just like you would patches of concrete. NO difference what so ever. This is exactly why I needed a concrete contractor. Clearly, I didn't buy any concrete material through the contractor, just their labor and use of their equipment.

[Member name removed], I'm sorry you were not happy with the work. I pride myself on doing the best job I can each time, and as you can see from previous reviews, my work is of the highest standards and I aim to please every customer. I was unaware you were so unhappy with the finished product, as you approved the job at every step. Upon completion, you indicated you were happy with the job, we shook hands and you paid me in full for my labor. Again, I always strive to do my very best and never like to leave a customer unhappy. Lee
Went very well. Mr. McCarley responded to my initial phone message promptly and showed up when he said he would throughout the project. He made the extra effort to locate a vendor and order custom pavers for my project. I'm very pleased with the result.
Description of Work: Removed and hauled away 2 concrete squares from back patio that had been disturbed by tree roots. Chopped and removed some of the roots from the tree and installed 18" x 24" concrete paving stones as a replacement patio. Filled space between pavers with gravel.

I had contacted McCarley in November of 2013 for the purpose of securing an estimate on the cost of replacing an existing patio area (about 10' by 20') and replacing the concrete walkways on each side of the house. The total square footage of the project was about 1,000 sq. ft. McCarely submitted a bid of about $9,700. I also contacted four other concrete and paver companies and decided to go with GoPavers which may have been a mistake. I checked the Contactor's Board and saw that he had allowed his contractor's license to expire and that he was not authorized to contract at that time. I also noticed that he has informed the Board that he has no employees even though all of the reviews on Angie's List stated that he had workers doing much of the work under his personal supervision. I assume that this may be a future problem with the EDD for him. I notified him of his lapsed license and he said that he would check with his wife who handled the payment of his bills. Since I wanted the job done at that time and since McCarley was not a licensed contractor at that time, rather than waiting for him to rectify this issue, I chose to go with Gopavers since Angie's List had so many glowing reviews for this company as was the case with McCarley. While I was discussing the project with McCarley, I had asked him to give me a bid on a separate project of adding height to the concrete wall at the rear of the house. He submitted that separate bid. After getting the paver stones installed, I contacted him again in January of 2014 about the concrete wall job and asked about doing a separate concrete job for about 350 sq. ft. and he gave me another written estimate for the job which added up to about $3,750. As it turns out, he had assumed that I meant that it included the 1,000 sq. ft. job as well. When he arrived at the project site today (05-31-14) and saw that I had gone with the paver company, he became infuriated and said that if I had asked him to install pavers then he would done so. Before he had arrived that morning, I inspected the paver job while I was waiting for him and saw that the border stones were starting to separated from the other paver stones. It seems that Gopavers had failed to take into account that the clay soil in the area required more footing for the border. (I will need to write a separate review for Gopavers to explain if that company rectified this problem after I contact the company which is closed on the weekend). McCarley started to fume when he realized that I went with another company and when I asked about the cost of installing a concrete border to help hold in the border paver stoned, he angrily told me that he was not in the business of fixing other people's mistakes and that I should have asked him about the cost of installing pavers if I had wanted them. He then stormed off and refused to discuss the wall project with me. Since I have no experience with his actual work product as have his customers, I can't speak to that point. However, if you choose not to go with McCarley, please note that he does hold a grudge against homeowners who turn him down for one project and then ask him to do a smaller one.
Description of Work: I had contacted the provider to add height to a rear concrete block wall and to add concrete to the backyard area.
