They show up on time, they are competent and professional, and they do quality work. I've used Allen & Sons several times. However, I've always had the feeling that their prices are too high and I won't use them again.
Description of Work: On their last service call they replaced the solenoid that opens and closes the door to the ice-maker on my side-by-side refrigerator.

We cancelled the service with these clowns
Description of Work: Technician diagnosed Sub Zero refrigerator repair as clogged freezer drain tube - he first quoted $700 then my mother bargained with him and he came down to $600. When we determined we did not really need the drain tube heater ( refrig has survived 23 years without it) we called him back and cancelled the service. He immediately offered another $100 discount ( down to $500) but we declined. The frig is old enough that we feel it is best to replace rather than to spend more money fixing it. The part for the drain tube fix can be purchased for $60 - I feel this is an instance of overcharging an elderly customer. We defrosted the freezer and it is working fine.

The technician was great. He arrived on time and was very polite. The problem turned out to be my ice maker was clogged which was also stopping the fan. It was just a quick fix for a very reasonable price. I was very happy with this company.

Dishwasher repair. Allen and Sons advertises themselves as ?no hassle repair?. That wasn?t our experience. Our dishwasher wasn?t washing well. We called Allen and Sons, and they sent someone out - which was pretty efficient, I thought. He looked at the dishwasher, and found that it was leaking underneath. He said it was coming from the inlet pipe and that he didn?t want to fiddle too much as there was water leaking onto the wiring and that made him nervous. He suggested we get that fixed, and then he?d try to fix it. So we got a plumber ($150) to replace the inlet pipe. The repair guy came back (on Labor Day - that was very convenient). The dishwasher was still leaking, so it wasn?t the inlet pipe at all. He looked at it, he said it was very unusual and he couldn?t solve the problem. He?d have to take it away and have their technicians look at it in their workshop. This was a Monday. Time passed, I phoned and asked what was happening. They were waiting for parts. Time passed, they were waiting for parts. Time passed, they were waiting for parts. Three weeks later, they called me. They wanted me to authorize the payment for some parts, and then they?d order them. I thought this was strange, as I?d thought we?d been waiting for parts for the past three weeks. They sent me a form to authorize payment. It said that they had put three new spray arms, total price around $56. I thought this was strange, because the spray arms are big and obvious, if there was a problem with the spray arms, I?d have thought the guy who came to look at it would have realized. And a control board, for $120. Again, this surprised me, because the dishwasher was leaking underneath, and wasn?t washing well. I?d have thought a problem with a control board would have meant that it didn?t work - what with that being (I?d imagine) a complicated piece of electronics. Total price, $341. Traditionally people charge your credit card when they?re finished, not when they start, so I was a little surprised when they charged my credit card instantly (I mean within 5 minutes). And now time passes, while we?re waiting for a part. More time passes. Eventually, a month later, the mysterious part arrives. I asked them if they thought this was an unacceptably long time to keep a dishwasher, they sort of grunted. I asked them if they often kept things for a month to repair. They sort of grunted. They brought the dishwasher back, and fitted it. It seemed to run. After they?d gone, we noticed that several functions don?t work any more - the timer doesn?t work, light wash doesn?t work, etc. Two months later and the old problem is recurring. They say that they?ll return and fix it, I?d rather not let them in my house, ever again.
Description of Work: Dishwasher inspected on first visit. Removed on second. Returned, a month later, on third.

The company's website has an estimator, so I put in my brand and problem, and it gave me an estimate of the cost to fix it. That seemed reasonable, so I called to see if they could come out the same day. They were booked for that day, but put me on a waiting list and gave me an appointment for the next day. Later that day, I got a call saying they could come out the same day after all. I was very happy to not have to wait. The technician was prompt and professional, and the price was right in line with the estimate from their website. Oh, and they do appointments in the evening, so you don't have to be home during typical working hours. Overall I was impressed, and would use this company again.
Description of Work: Our oven was heating extremely slowly. The tech came out an diagnosed the problem as a faulty ignitor. He had the replacement part in his truck, and replaced it on the spot.

Got home from vacation and found refrigerator had stopped working while I was away. Had to empty and throw out everything. Tech methodically went step by step ruling out compressor etc until he found a circuit board that had shorted. He was able to fix with a simple soldering job - saving me the expense of a whole new board. Very happy with the job.
Description of Work: Repaired refrigerater. Did a great job of trouble shooting and saved me hundreds of dollars - when I thought I was going to have to junk the refrigerator and get a new one. Tech really knew his stuff.

Within a couple of days of my initial contact of the company, Ric came out and diagnosed the problems on 9/10/12. It took about a week for the parts to come in and the company called to schedule Ric to return and install the parts on 9/20/12. Ric was punctual, professional and knowledgeable. He explained what he was doing and why. The problem was caused by some mice that got into the refrigerator's bottom and damaged one of the circuit boards. On each of the two visits, Ric was careful in cleaning up the work area. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of service rendered. I would recommend this company to others.
Description of Work: I found this company on Angie's List to repair my Electrolux side-by-side refrigerator which I've had since 2005 and love all of its amenties. The refrigerator had turned into a freezer on both sides which was the base problem. The company sent out an experienced repair person to troubleshoot the problem, order the parts and then return to install the parts. The entire process took 10 calendar days.

Allen & Sons sat on the check and didn't cash it for nearly six months. During those months we realized that our cleaning lady was stealing checks from our office, forging them and cashing them. Thus, we closed that account and changed to a new one. Allen & Sons cashed my check shortly afer we had switched accounts and of course it was NSF. Because it was written so long ago and for such a small amount, I didn't realize they had not cashed it when I closed the account. We were out of town on vacation when Allen & Sons left a very nasty voicemail on our home machine that I picked up the next day after it was left and returned the call immediately. The fellow I spoke to addressed me as if I were a criminal even after I explained the situation and assured him that I would mail out a new check the next day when we returned home. Moreover, we had used them at least ten times in the past five years for larger amounts without ever having a problem with one of our checks. For the record, this was the first check I'd ever written that was NSF. I mailed out a new check to them immedately the next day when we returned home. Regardless, the accounts person at Allen & Sons saw fit to report me to the District Attorney's office were they have a special prosecution team for people who write bad checks. After hours of research, figuring out who to call and to whom to write, I was able to get the case dismissed because I could show that Allen & Sons cashed the new check on the very same day that they reported me to the DA. The form they filled out to report me specifically says that they must give the customer a chance to rectify the situation before they make such a report. Cleary, the accounts person was simply being vindictive and I wonder if the tech sat on the check because he knew he hadn't fixed our machine.
Description of Work: We used this company for over five years with good result because we used the same tech repeatedly, Sean. But after Sean left a new fellow came out to repair our dryer and he basically put in a part we didn't need because the problem was not resolved. I had another company come out after and put the correct part in and the new company explained that the part I paid Allen & Sons for wasn't even close to the problem. However, I paid Allen & Sons the same day they were out with a check.

Allen & Sons service center in Ventura worked with me to set up an appointment with a local Santa Barbara repair man. I received phone call 30 minutes before arrival so I could meet repairman at home. Repairman was prompt, curtious, professional, and thorough. Initial visit diagnosed problem and provided temporary fix while new drain pump was ordered. Pump arrived sooner than expected and it was installed on second visit 3 days later. All is working fine.

Whilst I was abroad on business, our integrated Fisher & Paykel dual-drawer dishwasher leaked over the circuit board, causing damage to the actuators. The appliance was built-in in such a way that it was impossible to disconnect the power source without turning off the entire mains supply. When the power supply was connected the machine wouldn't switch off and was making increasing worrying noises. After several unsuccessful phone calls to other appliance repair companies (all either too busy or not prepared to service F&P appliances) my wife found Allen & Sons, with a branch in Harbor City, just 5 miles from my home. Right from first contact they were calm, efficient, professional and courteous. After taking details they asked whether she could be available between 10am and 1pm that same day, which was just what she needed to hear. 20 minutes before the technician arrived she had a phone call from the office, letting her know he was on his way and giving her a chance to make the necessary last-minute preparations such as locking our dogs away from the kitchen. The technician, Tom, turned up exactly when expected, and was very polite and well presented. After examining the dishwasher, which was in a very difficult place to access, he explained the problem and cost of repair in detail. After accepting his estimate my wife was expecting to hear that the parts would need to be ordered, but in fact he was carrying them in his vehicle, and fitted them straight away. There was no mess, no fuss, and by 1pm our kitchen was back to normal. The cost was about what I would have expected. Call out charge was $45, but waived upon acceptance of the estimate. Labor was $200, and parts, which I know to be expensive for this model, were $322. With tax, the final bill was $550. The parts carry a 5 year warranty, and labor is 30 days. In our view the service provided by Allen and sons (Harbor City) was exemplary in all respects, and we would certainly use this company again. -

I called for my refrigerator making a god awful loud noise. They were able to fit me in the next day, which was great...until the service. The guy spoke very broken English. He also didn't do anything! Of course the noise had stopped by the time he arrived the next day. So, he checked the temperatures and listened to the compressor and told me everything was fine without even pulling the refrigerator out from the wall. Then I told him that I wanted the water dispenser checked as well because it wasn't working either. So he finally pulled the fridge from the wall, and told me that the water valve was broken and it would cost over $200 to fix it. Not seeing many options I agreed. In the time it took for the water valve to come in, I replaced the filter and the noise completely stopped and the water dispenser started working well again. He never even thought of the filter! When he came back to replace the valve, he still charged me the $80 deposit because he said he made adjustments the previous time he was there. GRRRRRR! Don't call these guys, they will rip you off!

The company provided me the option of using an experience serviceman "Bruce" who had serviced my machines a couple of years back. Even though I could of had same day service I waited a day to have Bruce make the service call. Bruce did an outstanding job on two washer/dryer repair jobs last Friday, 8/12/11. Bruce arrived early, quickly determined the problems and affected the repairs expertly. I really appreciated Bruce's explanations and advice of preventive maintenance.
Description of Work: The repair of two washer dryer stacked units. The first required replacement of the switch mechanism that operates the spin cycle. The second required the removal of accumulated lint debris from the blower propeller.

They lure you in with their low price for diagnosing the problem and then thwomp you with the high price of fixing the problem. They only performed the diagnosis for us, but we chose not to have them do the work. The technician did know what he was doing in diagnosing the problem, and he told us that they would take our dishwasher to the shop for free and give us an estimate of the cost to fix it for free, and bring it back for free if we chose not to have the work done which is a plus. But the price quoted to fix the refrigerator door was so high that we assumed that the price for the dishwasher would be high as well. My handy husband ended up fixing both thanks to the company's diagnosis.

The whole experience went well. We have never had such a professional technician before. He was polite, efficient, and I really sensed that he knew what he was talking about. He listened to our problem, asked for some time to investigate, and he had the whole oven apart (and organized) in good time. He explained what he thought the problem was, demonstrated why the ignitors needed replacement, and gave us a clear estimate. After we agreed to have the service performed, he went about his business efficiently, demonstrating the fix at the conclusion of the repair. I want to be clear...we were entirely satisfied with the service. The rating on price was a "B," but that was primarily because there are no benchmarks for this stuff. It was a lot of money, but, we bought a Viking. I'm assuming that we are paying for that privilege. Here's the breakdown: Three ignitors, $300. Labor and expertise, $150. Roy, the technician, was professional and efficient. I highly recommend him. The office called fifteen minutes before he arrived. The whole show was transparent and what one would expect. Allen & Sons seems to be based in Canoga Park, but local to Santa Barbara (Cliff Drive). They have a Web site: www.MyApplianceService.com . I recommend this service.
Description of Work: We have a Viking Professional range. It was expensive when we purchased it, and it is over fifteen years old. For all of it's "elegance," we have had to service it more often that one would suspect. The issue for us was that the ovens would work intermittently, and we were convinced that the oven light (illumination) had to be turned on for the doggone thing to heat up. Recently, both ovens and the broiler failed to work properly, and so we called a number for Viking repair (Allen & Sons). The service technician spent at least an hour and a half on our problem, replaced three "ignitors," and verified that the illumination light had nothing to do with the functioning of the oven. The oven works great, now. All parts from this company were guaranteed for five years.
