Response from Westside Heating & Air Conditioning
Westside totally disagrees with the characterization, information, and portrayal of the conduct of Westside given by Member on 7/13/11 regarding our company, our professionalism, and our integrity. It is indeed unfortunate that a perfect stranger who has not been harmed in any way by us can so conveniently misrepresent the truth and be so vindictive to falsely tarnish the good reputation of a hard working highly rated contractor. After the first call to Westside on 7/13/11, Member was called back the very next day by owner Ron Winkelman and made aware that Westside was too busy to do the job that he wanted done. It is a very busy time of year and Westside was up front in informing Member who himself is an independent general contractor. Our return call is a matter of record in the phone company's billing log that is used by Verizon to bill Westside. Upon seeing Member's posting, Ron called him to courteously discuss it. Member stated that he could not recollect the conversation and then very abruptly hung up in Ron's ear. As of 7/18/11, Member has given F's to 62% of all his postings. Seems a bit suspicious and of dubious intent on his part to judge such a high percentage of businesses so harshly. Again, Westside respectfully disagrees with Member's remarks. As a company whose focus is on customer satisfaction, we are disappointed that this did not occur. However, please remember that Member was never a customer of Westside in the first place. Thank You for considering Westside Heating and Air Conditioning.

At my request, Ron Winkelman conducted a site visit of about 2 hours and described in detail the nature of the work, the types of condensers available (including their cost, size, efficiency, and noise created), and possible locations on the property for the equipment. He then provided a detailed and written proposal with several cost options, as well as current information about the company. Upon acceptance of the proposal, installation was scheduled in about 2 weeks. On the scheduled date, a crew of 3 arrived at about 7 AM and completed the installation in the afternoon. Arrangements had been made with an electrical contractor for the following morning to install a 220v, 30 amp system. Westside was informed upon completion of this task, and one of their technicians returned on the morning of the third day to complete the installation and test the system. Thus, by the middle of the third day, the system was operational.

Westside has installed both heating and a/c for us. We had a new furnace installed last winter. First, Ron came out and gave us quotes for various options. Mike and Matt installed the heater. They finished on time, and cleaned up after themselves. We were so impressed with the service that we asked them to come back and do our air conditioning. We had the same excellent experience with the a/c installation: they coordinated with the electrician and the crane company to have the cooler installed on schedule and for a fair price. They were sensitive to our neighbors and pets. They followed up a few days after installing both the heater and the a/c to make sure we were happy with the job. We waited until after we had a chance to test both the heating and air conditioning before posting this review. Everything is working fine. We were very impressed and can't say enough good things about this company. This is a small, quality company on the Westside (I think it's better to go with a small company and get this kind of service than go with the big companies that do high volume, pay a large number of less-qualified employees, save a little money up front and then have problems with your heat or air conditioning down the line). Ron and Mike have been doing heater and a/c installation for over three decades, so you're getting a lot of experience when you hire them.
Description of Work: Installed a Trane XV80 two-stage variable high efficiency gas furnace and coil on 12/17/2010. Installed one Trane XL 16i series two-stage high-efficiency condensor, refrigeration lines, vibration isolators, drain lines, emergency safety switch, sheet metal cover for exposed refrigeration lines, coordinated with the electrician and crane operator, started and tested the system for proper operation, on 6/15/2011.

We needed to replace our 30 year old furnance and central air con system and address an uneven airflow distribution issue between three levels of our townhouse. Ron from Westside came to give a bid and I could tell he was an old school pro from the get go. He was in and out quickly with units in mind that would address our specific needs. i had done some research on-line which indicated that Trane was the best built/ most relyable brand. So I had originally called Westside because they are certified Trane dealers. Westside's bid was more competitive than either of the other two compannies we received estimates from. in addition Westside was offering a higher end system for the better price. Ron was very good in answering all of my questions and willing to negotiate slightky more on the price. They estimated that the job would take two days and it actuallty took only one day and an hour the next day. The equipment that arrived for installation was exactly waht was promised and Mike and Matt were very professional and easy to have around the house. They worked tirelessly to get the job done quickly and done right. It has now been almost two weeks since installation and we are enjoying our home more than ever with our new air-conditioning. I highly recommend westside for any major installation work that you might need done.

There are two main owners, Ron and Mike. I reached someone in their office when I initially called and he seemed quite conscientious. He told me that they were booked up so solidly that he was not sure on how soon they could fit me in even for an initial call. He attempted to discourage me and suggested that I could perhaps try other companies. I thought that was very straightforward and I liked that. I contacted them again after I had wasted time with another company and Ron was able to come out. He looked at the unit and gave me a price. He had to come back to perform the service and everything seemed professionally handled. I was well pleased. They have high ratings on Angie's List and I would recommend them.

I had another company come out to fix our heater/thermostat. After finishing, he said that he thought the thermostat was the problem. I then called Westside. He was prepared to change the thermostat, if necessary. However, after checking all of the components and cleaning the sensor, the heater started functioning normally (i.e. responding to the thermostat). I was very pleased.

Fantastic. Ron was extremely responsive and knowledgeable (and patient) throughout our decision making process (deciding whether to go with a simple replacement heater or to add air conditioning). Mike and Matt who came to do the actual installation were great. Very professional. The workmanship was fantastic and they were happy to answer questions throughout. The electrician Ron uses was also wonderful. Overall a truly pleasant experience which is rare for home improvement projects.

The project went exactly as planned and described. Ron did the estimate and Mike and Matt completed the installation. All of the them arrived punctually at the agreed upon time. Coordination of the installation of electrical and duct testing was done by Ron and occurred as scheduled. The inspector was delayed but Ron advised me of the call and followed up to make sure the inspector had arrived and the job was signed off. I wanted a little more air directed to the kitchen and Matt returned the following day to make the adjustment. They worked h****** two very hot days to complete the project and were always pleasant and professional. I couldn't be happier with their work and their work ethic. Highly recommend.

When it came time to replace my HVAC system I performed due diligence and came up with three possible vendors. I chose Westside Heating & Air Conditioning partially based on their stellar reviews here on Angie's List and their competitive bid. In the end, it could not have been a better choice. Ron, the owner of the company came to my home twice prior to installation in order to survey the work. So did his foreman Mike. When it came time for the installation it was handled in the most professional manner. Their knowledge and craftsmanship was impeccable. The area they had to work in was small and exact without room for play. Ron, Mike, and Matt (Ron's son) as a part of the installation crew, performed the work quickly, efficiently and with a minimal amount of inconvenience to my household. The price for the equipment, a Trane XR13 and First Company Unit was very good. The overall price including installation was as good as any fair market price. I would recommend Westside Heating & Air Conditioning to any business or homeowner regardless of the scope of their work. They are, in my opinion, simply . . . the best!

It was a very happy experience from beginning to end. We had full trust.
Description of Work: We had several (4) companies give us bids for replacing our closeted 1955 furnace (which came with our house) and install air conditioning with a TRANE system. We chose the four companies from certified dealer lists. Two of those companies came unprepared and ill equipped to the point of not even having a measuring tape and flashlight to inspect the attic. Ron from Westside Heating and Air was different. He drew detailed explanations of what could be done to move our furnace in the attic, what our choices were for air conditioning, and followed with the most explicit proposals for the project. His thorough drawings and explanations made it clear to us just what was involved and what we were getting. The other companies just didn't have a handle on the project to give us confidence. Ron and his office were easy and professional to deal with, and responded immediately to every question we had before the job started. Once in progress, his crew, including the electrician team, were efficient, pleasant, and extremely capable. Working together for years, his team worked in unison together to finish our job in two days! We couldn't be happier with our new system, but we know that it was because of Ron's patience in clearly explaining what would work best in our house, his explicit drawings and proposal, plus his experience in the business that gave us full trust and confidence in his company. And, I must add, he and his crew were very nice people.

Westisde Heating & Air Conditioning did a Great Job. Although I'm an engineer (and a picky one at that), I've been dabbling in construction for 40 years, and my wife and I had been 'cleaning up America, one house at a time' (also known as flipping houses) for a while when we were introduced to Ron and his team. I feel qualified to say, Ron really knows his stuff and is sensitive to the needs of the situation, not over designing or under designing the system. All of his work is highly professional. I've had to clean up behind almost every contractor we've hired, but not after Ron and his guys. All of his work fit like a glove and performed outstanding. Of course there were problems that needed to be hammered out, decisions that we needed to make, but when there were, Ron or Mike or Matt were there immediately to discuss the solution or fix it on the spot. Maintenance (for our previous house) like filters were handled that day, or the next. And Ron's whole crew was always courteous and a pleasure to do business with. Their explanations might sometimes be a challenge to comprehend for a non-technical person, but I will attest (as a techy type), that they are quite sensible. Just FYI, here are some of the challenges they faced on our new house, and how they dealt with it: First of all, getting the Air Conditioner's condenser unit up on the roof. Most houses have some easy way to do that, or have some place on the ground, but again, because we did this totally custom, modern house, we had it up on the roof, and getting it up there without damaging the roof was a challenge. There just wasn't any good access. Ron hired a crane. Nobody else suggested that in their bid, and without doing that, given the layout, I'm sure there would have been damage to both the unit and the house. Since we had Ron involved early on, he made recommendations on better ways to frame the house and accommodate things like that condenser, so the system would be quiet. Also, we have a small equipment room downstairs for the water heating system, the HVAC system, and several other systems. Space was tight. Ron found a path for the vents that met the needs of the system within the constraints of the space and had a custom sheet metal duct made. Its a tight fit, but it fits around all the other systems, and works like a charm. An an engineer, I was totally impressed with how well it all came together. In fact, Ron worked well with the Inspector and my General Contractor to arrive at a way to get air into the room, another detail the architect left out, and another technical challenge for all involved. he end products in both hosues were so quiet its hard to tell when its on, and produced comfortable environments reliably. We've worked with many contractors, and several HVAC guys, and I can't say enough good things about Westside Heating & Air. There's an old saying, you get what you pay for, and with Ron and crew, there were no hidden charges and I think we did pretty good for what we got, and we what didn't get (headaches). I'd recommend Westside Heating & Air Conditioning for anyone interested a setting it and forgetting it job.
Description of Work: The most recent work Ron and crew did for us was installing the entire HVAC system in our new, custom, home. I'm an engineer, so I have a certain tendency to make things really complicated, and I like to do things one time and do them right. In this case, the architect sort of created the challenges for me. The spaces for the system itself and the ducts were tight and hard to get to or absent altogether, the system I wanted consisted of multiple zones, there was heating and air conditioning, and because the house was pretty modern, we went for some beautiful custom grilles in the public spaces. Details on that below. Ron also did our previous house's HVAC, which was a completely different creature. It was an older house and I wanted and specified a particular and extremely energy efficient system. It consisted of a Polaris water heater (outside the house) that uses hot water, run through pipes to a heat exchanger (in the attic), and a normal blower and air conditioning. Without getting too technical (you can google it if you're interested), the Polaris gas water heater is a super efficient way to heat water. Most gas fired water heaters (and furnaces) have double walled steel venting out the top, but this one extracts so much of the heat from the gas combustion, that it is vented with plastic piping (PVC). Instead of 1000 degF leaving the water heater, its more like 200 degF. That's so efficient that it becomes a viable way to heat the house, and be used for heating all the house's potable water. Awesome system. And one that not many HVAC guys would touch.

I described the story above and don't have anything more to add. I honestly had no complaints. Rather than continuing my discussions with multiple service providers, I cut them off and went with Westside Heating. I have had pretty bad experiences for the most part with various heating, plumbing and electrical service providers in West LA, so I remain in shock that I have been very satisfied with the furnace and all of the related encounters I have had with Westside Heating. The estimate became the final price as well. No phony add ons. I would also add that be careful about how "green" you want to go, as a very expensive high efficiency furnace that might prove beneficial in a cold climate will be pointless and provide virtually no benefit in SoCal. Don't let anyone pawn off on you some old models that were once designed around yielding some tax advantage or rebate (the advantage is gone) and are pretty expensive. Ask lots of questions and provide lots of background info on what you want from a heating system (zones? stages? level of efficiency? sound? price points of significance? lifestyle choices? level of "greenness" without being ridiculous? the primary name and the guy who will give the estimate is Ron Winkleman.
Description of Work: My old furnance was about 35 years old and it had literally stopped worked. Repairs from the typical heating people that one calls were running up bills without good results. Various elements of the system had been upgraded over the years, but I decided that I needed to just put in a completely new system. So, after searching for recommendations and the internet, I called Westside (LA) Heating. At first, I was just planning to get an estimate and use that as leverage with someone else I was talking to, because I thought I knew what I wanted based on my research. Westside came, inspected the system for about an hour, asked me dozens of questions about how I used a furnace and what I wanted to see in a new furnace. They suggested that I consider several different price points, and recommended that I avoid the high end expensive system that I had in mind. Within a week I had estimates for three different options. After further discussion on the merits of each, I settled on a Trane furnace with a new Honeywell zoning system and some adjustments to the heat distribution as well. I was given the literature on the system in advance to review and consider. Our discussions included things like the relative efficiency of the system versus the cost, etc. Most of these discussions were (surprisingly) intiated by Westside Heating. At each level both the original estimator and the guys doing the work seemed to want me to understand every thing they were doing. The work was completely quickly and cleanly. They even repaired a number of things in the attic entrance that had been wrecked by prior repairmen. To date, the sytem has exceeded my expectations. Rather than enduring a noisy, inefficient furnace, and poorly distributed heating, I now have a very quiet multi-stage furnace with very even heat distribution throughout the house. Based on the advice of contractor friends, I had budgeted abo0ut $7500 for the work, so the final bill of around $6,000 was welcomed. A couple of additional comments that seem minor, but actually make working with these guys easier: (i) they speak English (not that there is anything wrong with another language, but I speak English and I need to understand what is going on), (ii) they took extra measures to insure that the jobsite was kept clean and restored to its prior condition when they went home at night (the job took about 3 days), (iii) there was a rather persistent follow-up with me to make sure that everything was working correctly, (iv) they were punctual--none of this "manana" stuff, and (v) they did not try to "sell" my on a specific manufacturer--rather, after extensive discussions about what I wanted to have in terms of a system, they made some recommendations that included several different manufacturers initially, which we then narrowed down. I still recommend that you do your homework and learn about the modern furnace before calling them. It will really aid your understanding of the options they present. Also, they are pretty leanly staffed at the actual office, so you may need to leave a message. But, your call will be returned quickly, so don't worry.

They were great. I love them. They were prompt. They came and looked at the problem. They got to the problem right away. The people who came to work were nice and courteous. They gave recommendations for other stuffs. They messed up and cleaned up everything. They told me how I could to fix the thermos flask. They told me that I could buy a plate or just paint around it. They also said that they would recommend that the painting was cheaper. They didn't try to push me to more expense, so I liked that.

I cannot speak highly enough about my experience with Ron, Mike and Matt from Westside Heating & Air. I knew I had an unusual challenge when my initial contractor ended up telling me that the installation of the second unit on the roof would not be possible due to extremely tight space limitations caused by the proximity of high voltage & utility lines, trees, & the neighbors properties, to my house. Then I found Ron on Angie's List. From the start, I felt I could trust Ron's professionalism, advice & equipment recommendations, and that I could expect all round high quality work. Westside exceeded my expectations in all ways. Ron, with his years of knowledge, contacts and expertise was able to find a crane operator who deftly maneuvered the equipment to the roof in an extremely tight space without any damage or mishaps. And quite honestly, I had been fully prepared for something to go wrong because it IS a tough space, but everything went smoothly. Ron handled my neighbor's concerns with kid gloves, making several visits to check and double-check the logistics of getting the equipment to the roof. My neighbor, who had been understandably worried about potential damage to his property during the installation (we needed to use his driveway for positioning of the equipment), actually raved about the process - he was so impressed. Owning a high-end home notwithstanding, I have been "under-employed" for the past few years and therefore cost and value are extremely important to me. In fact, I was only doing the replacement since I would need functioning heating & air in order to rent the house. Therefore, I also got 2 additional bids from well-regarded local contractors who said they could get the job done. However, they couldn't match Westside's $ for $ value and the quality of the equipment & warranties they were offering, for the price. I feel I got a great deal. Ron, Mike & Matt, were extremely professional in all ways - timely, polite, ethical*, dependable, flexible with my schedule (& the weather), extremely neat & clean -- an all-round pleasure to work with. * Ron actually recommended against some costly add-ons that other contractors had recommended as either not needed or they could detrimentally effect the manufacturers warranty. I would recommend these guys in a heartbeat. I plan to use them for on-going required maintenance and actually look forward to seeing them again. Altho I did it for the renters, boy, have I been enjoying this toasty warm house during all this weather!

Just moved into the new house and the furnace was red tagged by the Gas company. I called a web search hvac company who came out and did what I call a 'casual' inspection and immeadiately tried selling me a new furnace. Yeah, right. Joined Angie's list, got Ron's company and he came out, figured what was wrong and fixed the furnace. He did not try and sell me a new furnace but after I asked, he presented me some options. After deliberation with my girl friend, we decided to go for it and Westside was really great on scheduling a date of installation that would work with my schedule. The installation was trouble free, conscientious, and clean. The two men doing the work were couteous and friendly. All in all, money well spent on a much quieter and efficient unit.
Description of Work: Replaced twenty year old furnace in a space and access challenged attic.

Ron and his crew were very professional from the estimate to the final adjustments. They even came out to do our job on a holiday weekend because that was the only time we could be home! They installed all the machinery and new insulation in a professional and efficient way--and they cleaned up absolutely all the mess. When they were done we didn't have to do anything else ourselves. But most of all, these folks went several extra miles for us. Not only did they come on a holiday and complete the work very efficiently, they also came back to make any adjustments we asked. I was very impressed that Ron could actually sense that there was a change that would make me happier (even though it was not necessary to the safe operation of the system). So he just said, "I want you to be happy. Let's do this." I was really grateful that he understood so thoroughly. I would absolutely go back to Westside Heating if I ever need any work done. I've have seldom worked with a more professional, considerate and efficient group who did excellent work and went beyond what was called for to make their customer happy!
Description of Work: We had our old furnace replaced with a new, more energy efficient model. This involved removing the old heater and insulation and replacing it with new material and machinery. Westside Heating also took the time to show us how to use the new touch screen programmable thermostat and to suggest ways we could save energy and improve air quality in our house.

Last year they gave me a price to create two zones, knowing I wanted to pay off the initial install before adding this feature. By the time they came back, after the initial estimate offer had expired, I had also changed my house configuration and now needed to do 3 zones instead of 2. To keep the price as low as possible, they said they'd do "time + material" -- so there was a risk factor in that, if there were problems, my price could go sky-high very quickly. But they thought it'd be a straight-forward install, and having used their services before I already knew they were completely trustworthy. Anyway, the installation went incredibly smoothly and finished on schedule, and the final price was almost identical to my initial 2 zone offer. There's little I could have done if they had taken advantage of me -- slowing down the work, finding "unknown" issues, etc. Instead, they worked like they always do: honestly. So for the initial 2 zone estimate, I got 3 zones instead, and it's working like a charm. Which is why I'm giving them my 2nd rave review here on Angie's List. I'm very happy I used their services for the initial system, and now for the zone. Top notch company.
Description of Work: They installed a new a/c & furnace & ducts last year, and now I had them add zoning to the existing system.

My Condo complex mgr. shared that neighbor's reported Westside as a company that doesn't try to sell services/products that aren't needed. My Heat/AC was 40 years old. I definately needed a new one! The estimate was thorough. 2 Products were recommended. Good support literature was provided. I chose one after conversing with the owner - Ron Winkleman. A contract was signed. Rain prevented the installation but Ron set up a second date before the end of the year to allow for the Energy Tax Credit to be utilized. The work was done carefully and efficiently and much courtesy was shown by the technicians who accessed my dwelling. I was thoroughly trained on the new (and simple!) Thermostat. A week or two later I was called by the owner to inquire as to how the new equipment was working. That was a "first" for me. Very good Customer Service! Replacing one's Heat & Air Conditioning Unit is a major expense and I can easily say that I felt I got my money's worth both in Equipment and Good Service.
Description of Work: I purchased a Trane Heating and AirConditioning Unit. It was installed. The installation involved using a Crane to hoist the equipment onto my roof. My ductwork was checked to see if cleaning was needed (it wasn't), and a new Filter was installed inside my dwelling. I also requested and received a simple digital Thermostat. This was important to me as I didn't want a complicated mechanism for adjusting my Heat and Air.
