This is an updated/revised review to an earlier one. I was asked to provide the prior review while the move was happening so I could benefit from a discount on the service. At the time, I reported that the team moving me (headed by Jason) were very professional, timely and I was satisfied with the work they did. I stand by the comments that they were professional and timely but I am adjusting my review now that I've had some time to really evaluate the quality of the move. My primary disappointment was the carelessness by which they packed my boxes. I found glass items unwrapped, shoes crushed and other items that were packed in a very inexperienced manner. They used plenty of paper but on items that didn't make sense (like pillows and other non-breakable items). I am very fortunate that my move was only 10 blocks because I'm sure that many things would have been broken if it had been a longer journey. As it was, only a couple items were broken (including a table leg, which I was told by Jason was not their fault..."it just fell off" when he lifted it) On top of all this, I called the company within a week after the move to inquire about a service to pick up the empty boxes and all the wasted paper. I was told that Northstar does not provide this service (I should have asked before I hired them) nor did they have any information regarding a company who may be able to provide this service. They told me to call other moving companies. The customer service woman with whom I spoke was very abrupt when I inquired about this and was very quick to hang up. Factoring it all in....I will not be using them if I ever move again.
Description of Work: They were hired to pack up my current residence and move me to a new residence 10 blocks away.

It went about as perfect as a move can go. As mentioned above these gentlemen were super courteous and as hard working and efficient as possible. When a heavy duty move that is completed nearly 3hrs less than estimated, you have a highly efficient team. -"'!==eeeeßazaaaaaaz-111q21

I never write reviews, and as I write it has been over a month since this experience because I honestly wanted to forget about it. This is one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had, and I consider myself a reasonable person. A couple weeks prior to my move I scheduled moving services for a Friday and was given and arrival window of 12-6pm. More than one week prior I called back in to NorthStar because I learned that at my new residence I had a specific window of time I could use my elevator. I let NorthStar know that in order to move on that date I would need to move early in the day. The woman on the phone said it is not a problem. She told me she would take care of it and that I should expect the movers at my residence at noon. On the day of my move waited until 2:30pm before calling in to NorthStar. For the next 2.5 hours I was looped through many people, told I would receive a call back right away. After waiting more than 30 minutes (twice!) for a return call, I called in again. One time the phone was answered "What's up," and the other time I was forwarded on again multiple times. I finally got in touch with someone in the field who said he would be at my house between 5:30 and 6:00pm. After asking numerous people to connect me with a manager, getting redirected and disconnected, someone put me in touch with my case manager of sorts who had initially booked my move. It then got even worse. It was now about 5:00pm and she told me the movers would be there within the hour. I let her know that wouldn't work, as my move would take multiple hours, the drive time between old and new residences is over one hour, and I could only use my elevator in the new place until 8pm. It was like she did not hear me. I asked to speak to a manager, she got off the phone and came back not with a manager but this time letting me know the movers could be there in 45 minutes (at almost 6pm). It was the most absurd conversation. I finally had to say "it it IMPOSSIBLE for me to move tonight" because she kept saying "are you sure you don't want to do it tonight?" It was infuriating, the end of the day, I had no movers, my house was torn apart, bed torn apart, food packed away and my husband at a location near our new home (over an hour away) without a car. This company is truly a joke. When they could not get me scheduled to move the next morning I decided to go with another company (who was awesome!!) On top of the mess of the move, I had paid $167 for a permit for the moving truck to park in front of my home. The permit lasted only one day and was booked way in advance of the move, so I had no permit the day I ended up moving, and lost $167. I had also paid $50 for a NorthStar moving coupon which I did not use. I have not been reimbursed for either. That night I had to unpack food so I could eat, my husband took a 2.5 hour train back to our "old" home, and I had to unpack bedding, toiletries and clothing to get us through to our future move date. I have already warned two friends (who are moving this month) to be sure not to book with NorthStar. UPDATE: After posting this review I was refunded for my permit and coupon.
Description of Work: Nothing. I canceled my appointment with them but lost $217.

Dear Angie’s List Member, It is obvious that you are still very frustrated, and I am sorry to hear that. I had hoped that after we spoke and I shed light on some of these issues you might feel different. When you did not, I compensated you by reimbursing you the cost of the permit and your Angie’s List coupon (even though you did not move with us and we had received no payment from you nor performed a service for you) in the hopes that this would help ease your frustration over what was ultimately a misunderstanding. This is what I know: Your file in our computer system has record of multiple back and forth emails and conversations between you and our Client Loyalty Team Member, Ana. We have record of the two Angie’s List coupons you purchased by mistake and our alerting you to the duplicate; we have record of your clarifications that we protect the floor areas in the new place with carpet runners (we do) and whether you would need a picture box to move your mirrors and pictures (you do not, but it is recommended). What we do not have record of is your request that we arrive by a certain time or the whole move would be in jeopardy. This is a big piece of information to be missing, and unfortunately, this is what caused the ripple effect with your move. As you cannot remember who you spoke with over the phone at our office, I am unable give you a team member’s specific version of events; no one on our Client Loyalty Team remembers speaking with you about a specific arrival time and, as it was not logged in the system, I will have to respond generally, with our normal procedures in mind. The window for our arrival, as it appears on your written confirmation, was 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. We always send any change to your move information, big or small, in writing. That is our procedure. If you had called us to request a specific delivery time and we agreed to it, that change would have been noted in our system by the person you spoke with and a new confirmation email would have been sent out, in writing. As someone engaging in a contractual agreement, you should expect no less than a written confirmation for a change this significant and without one, could reasonably assume that the message you intended to convey did not get through. We welcome special requests and always do our best to accommodate them, but to be frank, if you are given a six hour window by a moving company and your move would become impossible if we arrived at any point in the last half of that window, your move should have been scheduled for a different day, with a morning window. In an effort to get you moved regardless of this mishap, we gave you the first available early morning reservation we had. You agreed, but apparently changed your mind, as you canceled the rescheduled day and informed us another company had moved you. That is of course your prerogative, and I am very glad to hear that you were happy with their services. If we could turn back time, we would gladly change the way the day of your scheduled move turned out; since we are forced to live in this reality, we can only try to make things right as we move forward. That is why we did everything we could to find a solution that would address your complaints that were currently within our power to address. We were not contractually obligated to reimburse you for your parking permit or your Angie’s List coupon like we did. Indeed, Angie’s List could have reimbursed you for your coupon. We did so because we felt bad for your expense. In that light, we did what was in our power to provide you with what you communicated to us was lacking from your consumer experience. However, it is now clear to me from our conversations that there is nothing we can do to resolve your frustration. This comes down to a difference in life philosophies. We believe that a good company is not the same as a perfect company. Perfection is impossible. It is what you do after an issue occurs, even and especially if we do not believe we are at fault, that truly measures the quality of a company. That is how we have always conducted ourselves, but we understand that not everyone feels the same way. At the end of the day, we regret that our efforts to resolve things for you were not to your satisfaction. We truly wish you and your family nothing but the best in your new home. They were professional on pick up day, the delivery time was more of an issue as they delivered a day later than they called for delivery due to a vehicle breakdown which is understandable. Overall it was a good experience.

Three young men from North Star Moving Co arrived promptly as scheduled and loaded the truck with assorted boxed belongings, books, chairs, cedar chest, several large paintings, and also, a grandfather clock and a desk with glass cabinet, both of which they carefully wrapped in blankets. We arrived at my storage unit without any problem; it took only 1/2 hour to unload the truck and stack the boxes and furniture. The movers were extremely efficient, strong, experienced, professional and courteous. I would hire them again!
Description of Work: I had asked NorthStar Moving Co to meet me at my parent's former home and take an assortment of items to my storage unit in the North Bay.

It all went well enough for me to use Northstar again when I put the house back in order. The guys were on time, polite, and took care with my furniture. (My crew was Jason, Rene, Rudolfo.) No dings in the doorways as furniture got moved around. It all went where I needed it to go. The team was efficient and hard-working.
Description of Work: This was an in-house move in preparation for re-doing my floors. All furniture in the living room and dining room was moved elsewhere in my house. They packed up my wine and my bookshelves. Northstar did have a three hour minimum, but I was prepared for this up front. My job took about an hour.

The movers--the guys that packed up and loaded my things--were excellent, hard-working, and great to work with. The problem is with the front office itself, and their inability to provide me with any reasonable date to expect my delivery. I contracted with the moving company with almost 2 months notice, and they still have not provided me with a date to expect my delivery in my new home beyond a 3 week window. This is incredibly inconvenient; while it likely limits their own liability, makes it very difficult for a customer to plan around a delivery, especially during a cross-country move. After calling customer service, I was told that they could not provide me with a date beyond this three week window because this month was a very busy time for them, and that I was not the only customer waiting for items to be put on the truck. This is not the experience I've had with other cross-country moves. While Northstar receives high reviews (likely due to the good folks on the ground and for local moves), STEER CLEAR OF THEM FOR LONG-DISTANCE MOVES. They simply don't seem to have the logistical back-up to handle this sort of things. **Update: Northstar contacted me yesterday to tell me that our shipment would not leave California until June 1--fully 12 days after they had picked up our items; and could not provide me with an estimate as to when our items would arrive in Atlanta. The Northstar representative also told me that they could not move up the date, because I had "gone ahead and written a negative review on Angie's List." I wish I was making this up, as this has been completely inconsistent with the reviews that Northstar has received on this site. This has been a very disappointing experience, and has made our cross-country move incredibly stressful.
Description of Work: I contracted with Northstar to help pack and move my home from the San Francisco Bay Area to Atlanta, GA.

Respectfully, I have to point out that I gave you a delivery window of May 26 through June 8, a 16 day window. I mentioned we would contact you at least 24 hours before delivery. Also, I explained to you that this delivery window is for consolidation reasons. Consolidation allows us to save you money on long distance shipments by combining your shipment with others. The documents for your move (Bill of Lading), which you signed, clearly state the delivery window as well. At this point, I’m very confident that the delivery will take place within the window promised. As far as your claim that someone told you any aspect of your move was affected by an Angie’s List Review, let me be clear: no one at NorthStar Moving would ever tell any client they could not move up a date (or perform any other service) because of a review. That is not how we operate. I am looking forward, as I’m sure you are, for your belongings to be delivered within your delivery window, with at least 24 hours’ notice, as promised. It's our second time moving in the city and we wanted to do it right this time. After reading some horror (moving) stories I decided to go with a company with recent positive reviews. They were very efficient and replied to my Angie's List enquiry within 24 hours. They were also able to accommodate us at short notice (7 days) and provided several alternative dates and timings. I am blessed to have met Raymond and his young team- Bryan and Alex. The three of them worked tirelessly packing what was left in the apartment. They were efficient from start to end, and getting the boxes up to the second floor was no laughing matter. But they did it all without any problems and no scratches or nicks to my newly-painted walls! Best of all, despite the tough work and all the climbing, they always had smiles. If I had to engage moving services, I would definitely contact them again. But I'll be requesting for Raymond and his team!

I called Northstar Moving Company on a Monday to get a quote and confirm that they were available on my preferred moving date (3 weeks later). I booked a Big Deal through Angie's List on Tuesday, and when I called Northstar back on Wednesday to schedule, they were all booked up. I had to go with a different company to meet my scheduling needs. Northstar was polite, professional and responsive to my questions each time I called. The only downside to my experience was their limited availability.

Because of my great experience with Northstar several months ago, I decided to use them again for my second move. This time 45 minutes away. Miguel, Bryan R., Javier M. were the crew that helped me this time. I received a courtesy call an hour prior and the team arrived 5 minutes early. They were very professional and worked well as a team. There was obvious synergy between the guys. They were extremely careful with my items. I couldn't believe how well everything fit into the truck. It was like playing Tetris with boxes and furniture! They are definitely the experts in moving!! When we arrived at the destination they were careful with my new floors and wore booties and layed out a roll of carpet to walk on. They carefully unloaded everything into my garage and the rooms. They cleaned up quickly and left my driveway/garage cleaner than when they arrived! I have already recommended Northstar Moving to my friends/colleagues and will continue to do so. I will definitely be using Northstar the next time I move. Hopefully I'll get the same amazing team: Miguel, Bryan R and Javier! Thank you for making my move a smooth one!!!

They were wonderful. They performed services on the beginning of January. I honestly don't know if there were additional charges because me husband dealt with that. They moved us in December and stored everything and then they dropped everything off in January. The move seemed to go very well I don't recall any problems. They under quoted us and some of the people were kind of small but they got the work done well.

The job took longer than we had anticipated. They did an okay job, but it was pricier than we had hoped. We had used another company which seemed to do it less faster.

Move went very smoothly. Estimator (Michael Pomeroy) was easy to deal with and responsive. Alma Lopez was also very efficient and helpful. Movers arrived on time and were an outstanding team -- Miguel (Sup), Manuel, Alex, and Javier. They were very friendly and helpful. Fast and efficient and careful in their packing of delicate items. They were also very considerate of my 90+ year old mother and her needs during the day. The move involved two locations including difficulty in getting goods through a garage with small elevators to my mother's new apartment.. Congratulations to Northstar and the team for an excellent job. I will use you for all my moves now. Thanks again.

Description of Work: moved 1lg br, livingroom some kitchen to opposite unit, 25 feet, some very heavy items many small items. did so very quicklu and smoothly. a hard part of this job was to swap washers and dryers, this also efficiently done. moved 2 very heavy bamboo planters to opposite patio. wisely refrained from moving old grand piano because legs were rusted to the case, will leave for piano moving specialists. Jason the foreman was a very good communicator, as were his helpers.

Northstar arrived at the early side of their two-hour window; the crew called when they were about 15-30 minutes away. We did all the boxing, so Northstar just had to wrap and move. So far most furniture looks like it survived (more damage from earlier moves). Largest damage noted so far is when our clothes washer slid off the moving trolley and was scrapped by an adjacent water pipe - fortunately the pipe survived; we'll know about the washer when it is hooked up. The crew was able to get a very large heavy bureau up a very narrow stairwell with a 90 degree turn - the bureau hit the walls several times, but it looks like there are just scrap marks - no gouges requiring patch work. Overall reasonably happy with the move compared to prior moving experiences.
Description of Work: Move from single story single family residence to 1-2 story single family residence.

These guys are super cool, easy to talk to and take pride in doing their job not only fast but also careful. There were no dings or marks on any walls, doorways or on the furniture itself. I can't say enough about how great of a job they did. If I had to move again, without a doubt i would be calling them.
Description of Work: They loaded our boxes, helped take apart furniture and beds, wrapped all the big pieces of furniture, loaded and unloaded the trucks, placed everything where we wanted it.
