Tom Lee did reschedule the start date, but he gave us plenty of notice so that wasn't a problem. The actual work went quickly and seamlessly with very little mess or inconvenience. Tom Lee arranged for a plumber to come in where needed for the light well and a carpenter to install a new back door. This was what I really appreciated since I didn't have to find and schedule separate craftsmen.
Description of Work: Tom Lee actually worked on four areas at our house: a light well where water was dripping into our garage, front entrance also with water problems and rotting beams, replaced cedar shingles which are not up to code with lead shingles on our bay window and installed a copper canopy over the back door to keep rain off. The back door which faces the ocean was stuck shut from previous water damage .

I liked Tom Lee's proposal because he is detail oriented and takes the time to describe the details of how he will reroof. He showed up at the beginning and end of the job, which was very good, and his crew worked quietly and harmoniously. Tom Lee and his foreman were conscientious and knowledgeable. His office staff is communicative and pleasant. BUT: When I repeated a second time that I was concerned about removing the dry rot, he said there wasn't a problem and then tried to reassure me by showing me on the roof ( I had to go up on the second story roof), and then he discovered for himself that there was a problem. Apparently he hadn't taken time to look and the foreman had not reported it to him. This is probably the worst issue, although it didn't seem like it: 2. When the dirt and gravel started falling through the roof into the house and I told them, the only response was supplying sheet plastic to me -- several hours into the work. They said they had plastic, but the van was gone, and they started work again without it. I had to take care of it myself, and the foreman and crew members didn't notice, take care of it, or even respond to my request for help. They seemed to have no forewarning that this would happen, and it barely registered when I told them. Toward the end of the job I also had to point out that the collar around the stove pipe had caught a lot of gravel and had to be removed. The foreman removed the collar and helped me do an initial clean up of the considerable shower of gravel and dirt. 3. They didn't have the right size cap for the solar water pipes, and therefore were unable to completely detach the solar system the first day, resulting in no hot water available the first night of their work. (I could have gone out and bought the copper caps if they had told me, but they didn't, and no one on the crew or owner got them.) There seemed to be little concern, as if we were living in a third world country where no hot water seemed acceptable. 4. They were unprepared to treat mold or to allow time for treatment if it was extensive. I went out and bought the copper napthenate, and they treated it. If there had been more mold or rot, I don't believe they would have told me or treated it, and hadn't allowed scheduled time for it to be treated, EVEN THOUGH I had told them it might be necessary at the time of the estimate and again at the initiation of the job. I had to be on the roof and cleaning and going to the hardware store, aware of the issue of dry rot, or this job would have been entirely unacceptable. It was really stressful telling my husband that he had to find a shower elsewhere before going to work as well as trying to madly cover EVERYTHING--the bed, the closets..we'll be cleaning up sawdust, gravel and asphalt for some time to come. Nice, sincere guys. . This was priced to be a highly professional job. It was a developing-world job where the owner had to be on their toes. We survived. I still think they know how to build a high quality roof... Ask me again after it rains.
Description of Work: Removed existing solar water panels and disposed of them. Capped off the water supply to the panels. Removed old roof. Repaired dry rot and upgraded roof surface as needed. Replaced roof with asphalt shingles. Replaced wood paneling on chimney. Cleaned up outside.

If their price was reasonable, I would considered, but to be quote almost 2x the other 5 quotes I received was very discouraging.
Description of Work: This was the most expensive quote I received for roofing and the description of the work was not as detailed as I expected. Also, they did not mention the senior discount as noted on Angie's list.

Tom was punctual and extremely knowledgeable. He was a pleasure to deal with. His price was higher than another company and ultimately that made the decision for us. Had that not been the case, I would not have hesitated to go with this roofer.
Description of Work: Asked company to estimate replacing really old and decrepit roof and gutters. We got a quote from another company that was more affordable so ended up having to go elsewhere.

I was very impressed with Tom Lee Roofing. I couldn't believe how fast the job was done. The foreman was attentive and communicative. When I noticed some flashing hadn't been replaced on an intricate detail of the house, Tom Lee sent out workers and the problem was taken care of ASAP. I would recommend having a porta-potty on site. My contractor did not order one and it was icky having so many workers use the interior bathrooms (hence B for prof'l). Other than that, I was very pleased with the work.

It went very well considering I threw a last-minute change-order at them. They had to order 2 new skylights in the middle of the job. Somehow, Tom Lee managed to seal up a partially finished roof to keep the rain out while we waited for the new skylights to arrive.

They provided an estimate then returned to do the work. They were on time, responsive and seemed to do a good job. I did mention to them a leak issue I was experiencing but they were not able to find where that was coming from. I didn't give a grade for quality because I can't see (on the roof) what they did but am assuming everything is good.

Tom Lee is a pro, and his crew is wonderful. We had Tom come out and look at the leaks we were experiencing in several sections of our home and he clearly knew his profession well. His bid was competitive and complete. Once they started the work they discovered two issues that were unforeseen, both of which were hidden. Tom promptly diagnosed the situations and recommended additional work, which we agreed to and are pleased that we did so. (Which is why the final cost came in higher than the original estimate - it was not the contractor's fault). Tom brought in a large crew, who clearly have worked together for years...they are incredibly efficient as a team. The discovery of dry rot in one wall caused a significant delay in completing one small section of the roofing job. Tom was patient during this time, and offered several recommendations for contractors who specialize in dry rot repair. Our only issue with the whole job relates to the portion of the roof that was partially exposed and then not completely sealed pending the dry rot work - unfortunately, shortly after the worked stopped on that section of the roof we experienced very heavy rains and high winds, causing leaks in a heretofore dry section of the house. Had we any idea how long it would take to get the dry rot remediated we would have insisted that Tom's crew fully re-seal the roof in that area. All in all, however, an excellent experience. An example of their integrity: we agreed to demo a large deck that was installed over one roof surface. We completed 90% of the demo, but the ledgers that were secured to the house framing with lag bolts which were very difficult to remove, as the bolts had rusted into place. Before we had the chance to remove them, Tom's crew had taken almost all of them down as they started their work one morning.
Description of Work: Complete re-roofing of two separate roof surfaces on a four story unit residential building. Additionally, changing the grade on one roof surface and constructing sloped framing for two existing skylights.

Make sure you read their fine print. The notices on the back of the contract are there to protect you. If the roofer won't guarantee that they pay their subcontractors, you should go with someone else. Plus there is something very fishy about the fact that they discovered the limits of their insurance. I suspect they typically work for homeowners who are more like consumers, in that they are not responsible to anyone else for their decisions. Because I was responsible to the HOA for making sure this was done right, I pushed back. Tom Lee very unprofessionally made an estimate for an HOA that they should have declined from the beginning and not wasted my time. Further, Tom Lee refused to provide very normal guarantees that they would indemnify me for any claim from their subcontractors. Very fishy behavior.
Description of Work: I had Tom Lee make an estimate on a shared roof for a Victorian 2-unit condo. The roof replacement is to address a leak and ponding water. The estimator and customer service were polite. I was about to go with them, but upon review of the fine print, I had some concerns. The contract fine print disclaims responsibility for ponding water, the reason for the re-roofing, which they knew! Further, I asked for indemnification regarding subcontractor's liens. Tom Lee refused to address the ponding water that I had specifically pointed out. They refused to indemnify for subcontractors liens (that is, if they don't pay their subcontractors, the subcontractor can put a lien on the building). Then they "discovered" that their insurance doesn't cover HOA's. This wasted 2 weeks of my time (one week to get the estimate, another week to discover their insurance limitations). I had to start over from square 1.

One thing that made me so very happy was no more torched roofing. This new product goes on without the burnt tar smell of the old days and Tom Lee really knows how to do a roof. They are professional, dedicated to quality and the price was perfect for the work that they completed. Also, we were in shock at how outstandingly pristine they cleaned up afterwards.
Description of Work: We have a flat roof on our 2300 square foot home so the contractor took off all the old material down to the boards, replaced some boards and then installed a modern self-adhesion Flintastic SBS Modified Bitumen roll roof. All old material and waste was discarded by the contractor and he finished it in 2 days, giving us a 15 year warranty.

If 50% right works, then Tom Lee is your installation company for skylights. I needed two skylights: one at each end of my hallway. The hallway had one light fixture in the center. I received a bid on these two skylights--and very unfortunately, was not home the day they were installed. When I arrived home, I had one skylight at one end, and the other skylight IN THE CENTER OF THE HALL, directly over the existing light fixture. The foreman explained that he'd tried to reach me by phone, and that he'd changed the location of the light "to match the building," in spite of not communicating with me. He also stated that I'd learn to love it. When I pointed out that because of his mistake I had to have additional electrical work done [two light fixtures installed, and the one under the skylight removed], he offered to split the cost of the electrical work. 50% right on structural changes: YEEKS! [In addition, Tom Lee took $150 off the cost of an electrician; the actual cost was over $400.]
Description of Work: Tom Lee Roofing installed two skylights in my hallway. They worked from the roof down, and did NOT do any interior work [framing, sheet rock, etc.]
