+ -1 moreI called Atlas for a quote on removing and installing a toilet, in particular, a ToTo toilet at my house and had clearly stated the type of toilet that needed to be removed and the toilet that would replace it. I was quoted a price of $265 dollars which seemed reasonable to me and I was told that there might be other charges in case I needed a new valve for example. When the plumber came out, he stated that he could not remove the one piece toilet on his own and quoted a price of $645 dollars which included replacing the T- valve. As previously arranged with the company, the toilet removal was to be done on a different day than the installation. I therefore had the opportunity to speak with the company and question the HUGE disparity in price. To their credit, the owner stated he was willing to install the new toilet at the agreed upon price of $265 plus the T valve replacement ( $150). Because the plumbers did not communicate with each other about what tools were needed, it resulted in an extra day waiting at home to get the toilet installed.Coincidentally, in the same bathroom, the Grohe bath faucet started to leak. I asked for a quote on this repair and I was told it would cost $175 plus parts to replace the hot water cartridge. They would get back to me on that. I decided to investigate on my own about replacement, went to a parts store and replaced the cartridge myself- not much more difficult than screwing in a lightbulb. On the day I am writing this, the plumber called in the morning to inform me that he had found the part. The installation would be $175 and the part would cost $65. I paid less than $25 dollars for the part and installed it myself in less than 5 minutes. To their credit, the company has some integrity since they honored the original price and the work completed was very good and done in a neat fashion.

+ 2 moreThe sewer line backed up after several loads of laundry on a Sunday. They came out on Sunday and used a camera to find roots filled the line underground. They rooted out what they could. They replaced the pipe from the house to the street revealing a six foot section of pipe filled with roots. They did this without digging a trench but just two holes. One at the house and one at the city connection thirty feet away. They did all the concrete work to replace parts that required access under paving.. It all took about one week with most of the time waiting for city inspectors to arrive.
Description of Work: They replaced the waste disposal pipe from the house to the city line. The job was done quickly with little inconvenience to us.

+ 0 moreWhen I dumped a jar of spoiled sourkraut into our kitchen garbage disposal, it backed up the drains in our bathroom. I called our old plumber but he 's become a limo driver. That's when I made the mistake of calling "john" from Craig's List. He arrived with only a bottle of "green" drain opener and spent all day pouring stuff into the blocked plumbing and running water until sinks, tub and toilet were full of stinking stuff. John was elderly and each time he walked up our rather steep stairs he turned red and panting. As night fell he said "well just wait sometimes these things clear up quite suddenly by themselves." He left us with sewage everywhere - the place reeked. We were frantic. That's when we called Atlas. It was quite late when they came. They gave us two prices an overtime price, as in stay and do it then and there and a regular price to do it in the morning. We opted for the AM. They arrived on time, did the job and stuck to the price quoted.
Description of Work: We called in Atlas after another plumber spent all day making our problem much worse. They were prompt and didn't flinch at the sight of our bath tub filled with sewage and food scraps. We were very concerned about water damage to our downstairs neighbors and they managed to pump out the tub without spilling a drop. They got everything cleared and flowing with no mess. I feel they averted what could have been a real disaster for us.

+ -1 moreIt was tough to get even an approximate price quote when I called their office. The conversation went in circles. Finally the dispatcher came back with an approximate range. Final price came in 20% above the range given. For a simple toilette snaking, a bit on the high side. Plumber was available nearly immediately. Very good follow up on setting up timing for appointment by the main office. The snake got caught in my toilette and the plumber was pretty rough in getting it out. My toilette was scratche somewhat. Overall it was a good but not great experience and outcome.

+ 0 moreAfter shopping around, Atlas? quote of ~ $750 plus potential additional cost for unforeseen problems seemed in the middle of the pack. They also requested that I have the work area prepped with the kitchen cabinet removed to gain access to the gas line and the wall opened to run the new line.We agreed on the price and I prepared the area for the work. On the day of the job, the technician and assistant arrived on time. They brought in their equipment and set to work. After about 30 minutes, it seemed to me that the layout of the new line they were planning was?odd. When I asked if this was to code, the technician seemed surprised and stated that if I wanted the job ?to code? it would require approximately $250 in additional cost. While my first instinct was to show them the door, I was under a time crunch and they were on site. After completing the project, the technician wrote instructions for the inspection on the invoice and departed. When I called for the inspection, I was informed that a permit had not been pulled. As noted above, I cannot pull the permit. ONLY a licensed plumber can pull a permit for this type of work in my type of building, something I believe Atlas should have known. When I called Atlas, the owner informed me that I had not requested a permit, and that it was going to be an additional ~$250 for Atlas to obtain the required documents. But the owner did offer that he would not charge me for the time the technician was on site for the inspection. The technical arrived at the correct time the day of the inspection and I got the work signed off. So what started as a $750 quote ended up being ~$1250 when it was all said and done, and had I not been actively monitoring Atlas? work, the job would have likely have been installed out of code and not permitted. Had Atlas been up front with their costs and intentions, I believe it would have been an 'A' rating.
Description of Work: I am installing a gas fireplace and I needed a gas line T’ed off from the existing line to the gas oven, then run along a wall and plumbed to the fireplace unit. Note that this was a multi-unit building in San Francisco and as a result, there are specific requirements associated with permitting this install, specifically that only the plumbing contractor can pull a plumbing permit. Neither the homeowner nor general contractor can pull a permit for this type of work.

+ -1 moreI manage a 12-unit building, and I called Atlas to give me a free estimate on multiple repairs. They sent two guys that same day. Unfortunately, communication was a little difficult -- a slight language barrier existed. (I wish my Spanish was better!). Also, instead of using a notebook to take notes on the long list of repairs, one of the guys wrote notes on his glove. I found this strange and unprofessional, especially considering I required repairs in six different units. They promised to email me a quote that day, but it didn't arrive until afternoon of the following day. And the quote was absolutely enormous. It was 150% more than what a different plumber had quoted me. Atlas wanted to replace the p-trap in three units, which I didn't agree with. Also, there were a couple things missing from the quote -- I guess the 'notes on glove' method isn't working out for them. Unsatisfied with the quote, I decided to go with a different vendor.

Description of Work: Leak under the kitchen sink. I knew what needed to be done and had bought the parts but did not have the right tool to remove the replace the faulty pipes. Description of Work: I was in a panic when I got called at work at 5 pm and was told by my tenants that there was water pouring into my house and flushing the toilet resulted in water coming up in the shower. Obviously a stoppage. I called my home warranty company, AHS, and they dispatched someone from Stallion. The representative never even tried to clear the blockage, told me it was hopeless and that they could come first thing in the morning to replace my main sewer line, which he claimed was completely destroyed and he could offer me a special deal: only $4000! He said not to use our plumbing at all until he could replace our pipe. I couldn't believe that was my only option, said I'd think about it and call him back. Then I Googled for San Francisco plumbers. I got a bunch of listings, and I went to Yelp as well. All of which led me to Atlas and Joel & Audra. I explained my problem, turns out the owner of the company was the person who answered the phone after 7 pm. Not only was he patient and understanding when I told him the details, but he allayed my worst fears, told me that he was sure we could try a couple of things - all of which would cost $500 or less- before we would have to go for the worst case scenario which he quoted at roughly 25-30% less than what the guy from Stallion had proposed. Either way, I was already in better hands with Atlas. We scheduled an appointment for 1 the next day, as it didn't seem like a total emergency. We'd already gotten totally wet and flooded. Next morning at 10, things escalated. I called Atlas back. They moved the appointment up, Audra told me to stay calm and have faith- if it could be done, Joel could do it. Joel arrived in an hour. He brought a piece of equipment called a "Jetter". He blasted out the stoppage in no time at all, checked the pipe that Stallion had assured me needed replacing and told me that we were fine. He charged me exactly what he said he would, gave me a 1 yr warranty for the work and told me I should call him asap if I have any other problems. He also suggested we talk about the eventuality of getting that clay pipe replaced with a cast iron one. When my home warranty company called me to check up on things, I explained what happened with their originally recommended contractor and they asked to speak to Joel for the specific details on the job. Not only am I a happy customer and looking forward to a dry Thanksgiving, but American Home Shield knows about it and hopefully, I've saved someone else the potential for getting utterly screwed by a contractor who never even bothered to try to get the job done or consider saving me heartache and money. I would recommend Atlas 1000 per cent. Friendly, punctual, considerate, capable. I can't say enough good things.

+ 0 moreAtlas arrived as promised and assessed the problem. It was determined that the faucet could not be repaired and Atlas suggested it be replaced with a new one. Atlas said to call them after the new faucet was on site. Atlas was called after purchasing the faucet and returned on a SATURDAY! They replaced the leaking faucetand we were not charged extra for a Saturday appointment. We were also given our Angie's list coupon deduction. What made Atlas' service so important to me was that I had to arrange this repair from my home in Wisconsin and the work order was for a condo in San Francisco, inhabited by my daughter, a college student, with no plumbing or home maintenace experience. Thank You Atlas and thank you Angie's list for allowing multiple city searches.

Technicians arrived on time, surveyed the work and set about the repairs. All completed expeditiously; areas cleaned up. Invoicing done well, with 30 day guarantee. I have used numerous plumbers in this apartment building, and this is the one that I am most satisfied with.
Description of Work: Remove one hot water heater shut-off valve, sweat another replacement valve into place. Snake one clogges bath-tub drain, and one open lavatory drain. Complete one P-trap on new sink installation.
