We provide comprehensive design solutions that are brought to life with fine craftsmanship and attention to detail in our construction practices. ABOUT ADAM WOOLEY After receiving a Bachelors of Science in Landscape Architecture from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst I stayed on the East Coast for two years working as the head foreman for a residential design/build company that specialized in stone masonry. In 2006 I made the move to the Bay Area and began working for a well known Marin County residential design/build company. After gaining this valuable on site work experience, I started my own company in the beginning of 2007 and have been growing ever since.

Adam did an excellent job overall. The price was extremely reasonable and he was flexible with dates, as well as reliable for all meeting appts and scheduled working times. Also, the quality of the work was good. His suggestions for relandscaping our common pation area were great. The only criticism I had is I did not like all of the plants that were selected (however, to be fair, my neighbors may have suggested the ones I did not like). Additionally, Adam was skillful in managing all of the HOA member requests, and was good at balancing the various opinions. Overall, I would definitely recommend his work.

I reached out to Adam via email through Angie's List and he got back to me via email within a few days. He suggested a few dates and time to meet face to face to discuss the project and I picked one that was two days later within the window he suggested. That day arrived and I hadn't gotten a confirmation, so I just assumed that he got busy. I wrote him again and he responded by calling me within a few hours. He explained that he's very busy all the way through the fall with projects in San Francisco, so he wouldn't be able to take on any jobs in Alameda where I live (or anywhere outside of SF). He thought I was in San Francisco because I had a 415 number and had agreed to meet based upon that assumption.I was disappointed, but too much work isn't a bad thing for a contractor, I'm sure. With that said, given that this wasn't mentioned up front and given that his listing here mentioned "The Greater San Francisco Bay Area" as the service area, I think that added to the disappointment. I am moving ahead with another contractor, but I might consider Adam again in the future. If you're not in San Francisco, you might not be able to work with Adam if you're considering his services through the end of 2012.

Overall, it was a fabulous experience! Adam was very responsive from the moment we contacted him through the completion of the job. He listened carefully to what we wanted and delivered just we what we were hoping for (actually more than we hoped for). He presented a very detailed estimate which was very affordable, and was very accommodating as we requested some modest changes mid-course. He is extremely knowledgeable in all areas of landscaping, very creative in terms of envisioning what will work, and showed great care and expertise when installing. His crew was also very skillful and professional -- a joy to have around! The whole project unfolded seamlessly and greatly exceeded our expectations. We had worked with other landscapers over the years and Wooley was by far our favorite. We are so pleased with the results and could not recommend Adam and Wooley Landscaping more strongly.
Description of Work: We had neglected our garden for several years so the existing plants were overgrown, unhealthy and unattractive. We asked Adam to design a new garden, including removing most of the existing plants and ground cover, significantly trim several trees and hedges, repair or replace a fence, the irrigation system, and the lighting, and install a wide variety of new plants, ground cover and trees.

My husband and I are beyond ecstatic about Adam's final product. I am so excited every time I come downstairs and see my new backyard. Adam and his crew were all friendly, courteous, honest and worked very hard. Adam always took the time to chat with me at the end of most of the work days, giving me updates and making sure I was in the loop about everything. Even if something was not working the way it was supposed to, he was always in communication with me weighing out our options. Being a new homeowner I have to say that that trait alone makes Adam stand out as the best contractor I have ever worked with (interior and exterior). And to top it off he had to deal with a very nervous eight months pregnant homeowner (me) who had a very tight time schedule and poor previous experience with other contractors. The schedule he quoted me (three weeks) held up as did the budget (with a few minimal extras all under $100). I cannot express how thankful I am to Adam and his team for such an amazing job. I would recommend him to all of my friends!
Description of Work: We had a terraced backyard in San Francisco that was up until 1996 a flat backyard. We wanted to remove as much dirt as possible and make the backyard more usable for our daughter (I am due in a few weeks). Since we couldn't get any proper machinery into the backyard (the backyard abuts my neighbors on all sides), everything had to be hand carried. We were able to remove one tier and lower the second one. We reused a lot of the existing stone blocks in the yard and kept the original deck (for now) due to budget. We had Adam plant California native, non-toxic and drought resistant plants where feasible. We moved the staircase leading up from the basement up to the yard to the center of the backyard, opening the space up and cleaning up the look of it. Adam used blue stone caps on the tops of the walls which completed the existing concrete blocks we were using very nicely. We had a shade tolerant lawn planted on the top (second tier) with a nice plant border and seating around it. On the first small tier we have two matching planters with simple plantings. I can send pictures if you want to see the final product!! We just love it!!

Job went very well over all. Adam was easy to engage and had some great ideas in designing the patio area. I had a large amount of bricks and asked if it was possible to reuse them in the new patio - Adam said it was not a problem and went on to state that I had plenty of brick. Adam and his team showed up on time the first day and hit the ground running. Adam was even eager to work with me when there were changes to the project along the way. There were a few slight communication problems trying to discuss issues with other members of his team during Adam's absence but we managed to get through it all. Half way through the project the team discovered I had two different types of bricks (slightly different in size and color) They adjusted for the size difference but didn't give a lot of thought to the color difference (the bricks blended fine when they were mixed together in a pile, but separated had a distinctly different color. Further on into the project they realized they didn't have enough brick to finish the entire project. This is something an experienced landscaper should have been able to measure and know from the beginning. They did the best they could in matching the new brick but in the end I have a patio with three distinct sections of different color. They continued to insist they would age and blend fine but as time goes on it's becoming more apparent that they will not age and blend together and I am stuck with a three-tone patio. I would never have allowed the project to continue with the old brick if I knew this would be the potential outcome. Adam is a great guy and I would absolutely recommend him to others. Even though this was a mistake I believe the contractor should have been able to prevent at several points both before and during the project, they genuinely thought it would work out and did not intentionally try to put anything past me. The rest of the project looks amazing and I would absolutely still seek Adam out for future projects.
Description of Work: Complete brick patio construction, garden footpath, stone retaining walls, natural stone fountain, enclosed deck storage area.

Adam designed a planting layout for my front yard, which has a significant slope. He incorporated into the design a retaining wall. He gave me a great deal on the material for the retaining wall (leftover material he had from previous jobs). That wall turned out beautifully, built by Adam's brother, Sean. I was able to accompany Adam to the nursery to help pick out the plants, which was great. The next day, all were planted, and covered with bark chips. The yard looks AMAZING! It was the most transformational part of my house remodel. Adam and Sean did such a beautiful job, were always available for questions, and made good on everything promised. They are a hard-working, ethical, polite, and totally trust-worthy family business. Thanks Adam and Sean!!!!!!

Description of Work: I met with Adam who came over to give me an estimate on a backyard landscaping project. He seemed very nice and knowledgeable, though he was a bit late for our appointment. He stated that he was very busy and booked for the next month and a half, which was fine with me because i did not need the work done right away, but that he would get the estimate to me as soon as possible. He called me 3 weeks later and apologized, stating that he would be getting my estimate within the following week. That conversation was about 3 months ago, and I haven't heard from him since. This was unfortunate, because I really liked what I saw when I researched his company; unfortunately, I cannot spend my time chasing a contractor.

Response from Adam Wooley Landscape Design & Construction
I had a meeting with the members, both of whom seem like very nice folks. I had planned on stopping back over later that week to take measurements for their design. Unfortunately i was forced to deal with a family illness that week instead. Because they owned dogs I was hesitant to stop over at a later date. Due to becoming completely swamped dealing with current projects this one inquiry was unfortunately overlooked. My intensely busy schedule this summer did not give me any time to follow back up with them to set up another time to survey their project. I did not receive any follow up from them and assumed they decided to move forward with another contractor. There is really zero excuse for not following back up on this one. This one really just got lost in the cracks during our busy season. My sincerest apologies to the members. I wish them the best of luck on there landscape project.

We did quite a bit of research on landscapers in the San Francisco/San Mateo Counties, and spoke with at least 5 other landscapers before settling on Adam. The design he proposed during our first meeting was immediately appealing, and we were very impressed by the photos of his work on his website. Because a key component of our landscaping was a Bluestone patio, it was critical that we hired someone who was skilled in stonework. After micro-analyzing dozens of photos of online from various landscapers, I started noticing a distinct difference between Adam's stonework and that of others. I simply could not find anyone else who does as beautiful of a job cutting natural stone as he does. Other landscapers (some of whom charge much more) do a much sloppier job when laying natural stone... they have large, inconsistently sized mortar joints, they cut stones into widely varying sizes and shapes, and some of them just lay stone in awkward patterns. Even to my untrained eye, the difference is fairly noticeable, and I invite you to do your own comparing so you can see what I mean. My theory is that Adam was trained on the East Coast where they really know what they're doing with stone. On top of that, it's clear that he takes pride in his work and maintains high standards. The icing on the cake for us was that Adam also has a great eye for design... clean and contemporary with attention to color. He has a great working knowledge of plants that are attractive and low maintenance. I also appreciated that he gave us a design for a very reasonable price, and encouraged us to use the design to get quotes from other people for the construction. He ended up coming in at a lower rate for both the design and the construction compared to most people we spoke with. We are delighted with how our yard looks, and it exceeded our expectations. The stonework is beautiful, and he added some really nice design touches (such as large decorative rocks that were strategically placed and and quot;woven intoand quot; the Bluestone design). Even the pavers on the side yards look great. To top it off, he's just a genuinely NICE guy who is great to work with. He totally listened to what we wanted, and we couldn't have asked for a more positive experience. (If only we always had such a great experience working with contractors!!) I'm so glad I invested so much time doing my homework on this one. Don't be deceived by Adam's youthful looks in his website photo. He has a lot of experience and does amazing work for a reasonable price. Highly recommended!!
Description of Work: We purchased a newly built home that had no landscaping in the backyard yet (it was all dirt). Adam drew up a landscape design for us and completed all the landscaping construction for the backyard, which included a large sloped area. The landscaping included concrete pavers on the side yard, a Connecticut Bluestone patio (irregular cut), a seating wall, and softscape (trees/plants). He installed an irrigation system for the plants as well.

Adam Wooley is a true artist! I can't recommend him and his team highly enough. We had no idea what to do with our backyard. We interviewed several landscape designers but Adam was the only one that took the time to sketch out all his (very creative) ideas and give us estimates on each individual addition to the design so we could take out what we couldn't afford or chose a less expensive product. He finished the project on time and on budget and with tons of patience for all my questions. We are definitely going to use him again for our front yard. We are so happy with our new backyard we eat dinner there every night! Two thumbs up!

Adam and his crew were very professional from start to finish, and their quality of work is excellent. We've had both good, and bad stonework done in the past, and we know quality when we see it - these guys know what they are doing. They finished up the job a day and a half early, and were right on budget. They were very detail oriented, and we were very pleased with the work - and we're VERY picky! They are always prompt to return phone calls, and are super responsive - Adam came out to do the bid the very same day I called him for the first time. Adam and his crew are our new go-to guys for any outdoor project, and I actually just used his services again this past week for a small install project. As an aside, the contractor who built our chicken coop (and has been doing contracting for 25 years) has commented twice on what a great job they did on our custom gate, and how impressed he was with it. We had three contractors bid on the work, and their bid was right in the middle, which as a rule of thumb is what we go with. All in all, a great experience.

Adam was very professional from the very start. He came over and estimated a number of projects with various options for us and we choose the two projects (stairs and patio extension) described previously. He and his crew (2 others on these projects) were punctual and worked long days (8 am - 6 pm or so) to complete the work quickly. Adam was good about letting me know if he was going to be delayed for any reason so I could plan my day accordingly. He also involved me as needed for some minor decisions during the build process.
Description of Work: Built 14 U-shaped steps from treated timber up a steep hill and extended the patio with tumbled bluestone to match pool stones. Used some leftover moss rocks on the sides of the steps to retain the earth.

Adam is amazing. He is clearly an artist with stonework, so we largely let him do his thing after talking through some of our ideas. He gently steered us away from some (probably bad) ideas, and came up with a great solution for our small backyard patio (including some cost saving suggestions such as re-using soil on site to level the yard). He drew an outline of the proposed patio on the existing (shabby) lawn so we could visualize things which was hugely helpful in figuring out appropriate size, etc. He and his crew are punctual and diligent. The site was cleaned up every day (much appreciated by our dogs and tenants) and everything was finished on time. He's extremely careful with the surrounding ecosystem (plants, stairs, cars, etc.) which was a great bonus. A step-up was required at the entrance to the yard and Adam decided part way through that the original solution would not look as good as it could. He explained his idea for an alternative to us and, though by that time we were sure that he was right as everything else looked great, we were still surprised at how beautiful the final result looked. After seeing the finished product, and after so enjoying working with him, I think we got an incredible deal. I'm sure it's possible to find someone cheaper, but Adam does work that is worth every penny - and then some.
Description of Work: Adam and his crew installed a backyard patio. He also re-leveled the backyard, built a stone path to the patio, and installed two steps at the entrance to the lawn. We were unsure about what kind of stone or pavers we wanted to use - Adam helped us select a full-range Connecticut bluestone that looks fantastic (and was very reasonable from a cost perspective).

Adam drew up a blueprint for our backyard after meeting with us, and it was a great plan for us. Adam was very willing to negotiate a few aspects of his plan to cut the price down. We changed the bench design, we cut down on the patio size (grass is cheaper than stone), and we cut back on a bunch of plants. We made several changes to the contract after initially signing it; Adam was very flexible about the changes. We felt very comfortable letting him work - we didn't need to check up on his progress everyday, because we knew he had a great vision for the backyard. Our new yard has room for our kid to play in a rubber-chip area, a patio made of big stones for entertaining and grilling, and a small lawn. We've got 2 raised planters for herbs and veggies, and planting areas all around the yard for trees, flowers, and shrubs and stuff. We are vey happy with it, and we can't wait for more sunny days to sit outside. Also I can't wait for our herbs to start growing! Adam and his guys were able to start about 3-4 weeks after we first met, and they completed work in just about 2 weeks. The work went incredibly fast. Adam and 3 of his employees did all the work.
Description of Work: Provided a great design for our backyard. The yard was a blank slate - just a sandy stretch of weeds. He laid down a new stone patio, built a children's play area, built 2 wood benches, 2 wood planter boxes that join the benches, created a grassy area, planted 3 olive trees and 5 shrubs. Also an irrigation system. Our yard isn't huge - it's a typical narrow and long San Francisco block. The yard is approximately 60' x 25'. But it sounds huge when I list everything that Adam put in!

Contacted Adam and he promptly responded. Came out and discussed designs and our goals to provide a bid. Came out again before starting to help with landscape design and confirm we were on the same page. His guys were on time and considerate. Schedule was on time. We had a hard time visualizing some of the plants. Adam provided plant recommendations for us to check out and then once the space was cleared he took us to the nursery to show us his recommendations and help us visualize what they would like mature. He was fair, transparent and we're really happy with the results. Would definitely use him again or recommend him to others.

Description of Work: Our relationship began early this year when i hired Adam to clean up my garden after winter rains. The yard needed much help. Weeds had overtaken much of it. Adam recommended new plantings and replanting existing ones. The yard looked so good after his hard work that i ask for help in front of home. Adam made a design for front to include a granite walk way. the plan looked good and he proceeded. His stone work is superb. he learned his craft in New England, where they know stone;opposed to california where the help is stoned...my front garden is now drought resistant with drip system. My home is in Forest Hill and i get many compliments from my snobby neighbors on Adam's work..

Adam Wooley and his crew were always punctual and worked long days, (weekends too) to complete this extensive project. All his proposals were clearing itemized and there were no surprises when it came time to pay. We cannot say enough good things about the quality of his work -from the stone to the wood to the stucco. He built a curved stone wall. He matched the brick pattern of the Victorian house in the planter boxes to create a seamless facade. He rebuilt a redwood deck and leveled a patio to create a seating area and always with amazing speed and workmanship. We had a great deal of rain during the winter months and in spite of the terrible weather he would always start the day and try to get something done. We would highly recommend him!
Description of Work: The job was to pave top of a garage, build planter boxes, build stone wall in the house entrance, rebuild rear patio area and rebuild redwood deck and stairs, as well as plant palms and hedges and install irrigation lines with timers.

As design professionals (architect and interior designer) working on our own project, a much needed backyard garden, it was important to work with someone who understood plans, could offer advice when an issue came up and was professional. We are tough clients with a picky eye. We decided early on that the person working on our project needed to be able to work with us as clients and design professionals, be committed to Bay Friendly gardening practices and reuse as much as possible the elements all ready in the yard. Not only was Adam the right person for the job, all his staff was just a professional. Each day we had a mini meeting on what was going to happen from breaking up concrete, recycling wood, new grading or even plant purchases. This was valuable since we just had a new baby and needed to know timing on the project. We always knew what was going on, when we needed to be around to make decisions, and if we needed time to think about some options, Adam was great about doing another part of the project to give us a day to figure out a possible design change. Not only were we happy with the project, but plan on having Adam do our front yard as well.
Description of Work: Total overhaul of back yard including building seating wall, grading, drainage, planting. It was very important to us on the skill of shaping and laying old concrete into patio area and walking paths. Adam did an amazing job and the the concrete looks like stonework!

The project went like a dream. We have had lots of contractors over the years and even the best ones disappointed in some way. This was not the case with Adam. It went extremely well from the beginning to end. Adam started with many suggestions, met us at the rockyard and spent an afternoon going over options. This led to some important and very fortunate changes to our initial design. The work began on schedule and was completed very close to the initial estimate. He consulted with us at every step of the way and proposed a variety of alternatives when unanticipated problems arose. We discussed and agreed on any cost adjustments at each point along the way. His crew was neat, courteous and professional. They cleaned up every day. The final result is just great. Adam and his brother are real artist/craftsmen and clearly love stone and all that it can do. They both have a great eye for detail as well as the total look of the project. A wasteland has been transformed. The yard is beautiful and we love to work in it, entertain in it and just be there. An oasis. We couldn't be happier. Finally, it's worth noting that Adam and his guys were friendly, respectful and good humored - a significant plus when a project continues for some weeks.
Description of Work: An extensive landscaping of our backyard: demolition of existing structures, installation of drystack rock walls and stairs, design and construction of a water feature, planting of many plants and small trees, installation of low voltage lighting and irrigation. To give a sense of the scale of the project, the initial delivery of stone was 20 tons.
