This is an old family owned company in Mission Hills which, per their invoice, has been around since 1914! I have always received great service from them - whoever answers their phone is concerned and courteous, and will do her best to get a pumber out ASAP. The pumbers all seem to have had years of experience, and have worked for this company for a long time. They really know what they are doing, and I have never had a bad repair. They are personable, friendly, and efficient, and the company will usually try to send out the same plumber to my address if possible, because he knows the layout and history of the previous repairs. On 2 occasions, the plumber called me the next day when the repairs had been complex, to make sure everything was working OK. They give a window of time for their arrival, and usually are pretty punctual. They have always billed me for services, rather than collecting at the time of the repair, which is almost unheard of these days (I don't know if they are doing this for new clients right now) The premises are cleaned up and left neat if anything needs to be broken down. I highly recommend this company. .)
Description of Work: I have used this company for 10 years, ever since I bought my condo in 2002.(Long before joining Angie's list). I have had them out at least once or twice per year for various plumbing problems, as my condo dates from 1989. They installed the original water heater in 2003, and repaired it this last year so I would not need to get a new one right away. They have replaced faucets, the garbage disposal, replaced the "stops" that allow water into the various faucets and washer. Also fixed toilets, leaks in pipes, and cleaned out my dryer vent which was packed with lint. If the last invoice seems pricey, I remember the plumber was here for several hours addressing at least 3-4 problems, including the water heater repair.

I have used Powers Plumbing for my 1929 house for a number of years. They did the piping and plumbing work in my kitchen, replaced a couple of leaking water pipes, moved a gas line for the fireplace, and installed a new log lighter. This time, I needed a shut-off valve installed for the main water line to run drip irrigation. They seem to specialize in older homes with tight work spaces and less-than-ideal situations. Both my brother and parents have used Power's Plumbing services on my recommendation. When I need plumbing work done, I rely on them to take care of it.

I wouldn't say it was the smoothest experience unfortunately. I had scheduled them to come on a Wednesday after calling on a Monday. I had to give notice to the other owners since we were going to have to shut the water off. To play it safe I posted notices that night (Mon) for the Wed AM shut off of 10am. I had to arrange working from home. I called the afternoon before (Tues) to ask if they could come with extra stems and seats since I wanted my master bath examined to see if those were in good shape. On Wed at 9:30am while I was home, I got a call from Janet telling me that we would have to reschedule since they didn't have the part. Why would they not have such a common part that I saw on the shelves at Lowes just the day before. I said absolutely not, they had to come since I had already arranged time off from work and posted notices that the water would be off. I said I would go to Lowes if necessary to buy the stems. I knew exactly what I needed. There was some doubt as to if I needed the ceramic kind. I knew they were not ceramic. But they didn't have any of the regular kind. She said they would come and figure out a plan. After shutting off the water and removing the old stems, it turned out I needed the non-ceramic kind. He came up with the ceramic kind in his pocket and had to go back down to the van to see what he had. Now, there was no water coming out of the open pipe when he left (that I noticed). I walked away for a min and then came back and noticed WATER FLOWING OUT of the wall and DIRECTLY BEHIND the shower!! I have a one piece fiberglass shower so there is space behind the shower and wall that water can get into from the pipes coming out of the wall. I was PANICKED and was trying to figure out a way to get the water back into the tub so it wouldn't collect behind the shower/tub piece. I took a spoon from the kitchen to put directly under the pipe to direct the water into the tub. Problem solved. I told the plumber this and he reaction was and quot;oh well, residual water is going to come outand quot;. I asked where the water that went behind the shower/tub would go. He said and quot;probably into the wood or insulation or through the floor into the garages ceiling below.and quot; Oh great! That is just what I need, water damage and potential mold growing under my shower. It wasn't running that long, I would say 3 min maybe, but then again I didn't even notice it and wasn't watching it after he went back to his truck. The bottom line is, he was not careful or diligent. Damage was most likely caused and there is no way I can fix it. I just have to hope the water evaporates. I ended up leaving for 20 min because I went to buy the stems for both bathrooms. It turned out he replaced the ones in one bath. In the master, we didn't need the other 2 stems I got since he just replaced the washers. The stems were in good condition. He showed up at 10:05 am and left at 11:10am. When I called to find out what the labor charge was, Janet told me 2 hours. I said absolutely not. I guess it takes 30 min to drive from Mission Hills to University Heights?? What?? Sorry, I dog sit in the neighborhood where the shop is. It's a 10 min drive, maybe 15. So she took off 15 min the price, even though it should have been 30 min. I wasn't going to complain about the water issue, but I did anyway. Still I was able to use the $20 coupon. But after this experience I most likely will not hire them again. Also, they need to tell you up front there is a charge for the time to drive to and from. I think it shouldn't be the same rate as the charge to do the work. I should not have to pay for someone's slow driving, getting coffee, etc. EXTREMELY UNHAPPY and VERY SCARED that mold is going to grow under my tub. How do I get this water out from under my shower now?? I would appreciate any tips on this. I am going to call again to lodge a formal complaint with the company and possibly the Better Business Bureau. Very disappointed, sad and scared.
Description of Work: I needed a new stem and seat for the hot water in my shower. It had been leaking and I knew one of the washers had blown as there were black bits in the shower. The hot water side was leaking. I sent them a photo and they knew what kind I needed (Pfister). Two stems/seats replaced on one bathroom. In the master bath, two washers were replaced as stems there were still in good condition.

Response from Powers Plumbing
Thanks for the opportunity to respond. Anthony called me and stated that the repair was working find but he had some concerns. I will attempt to address the remarks in the review but overall, it seems that he was not satisfied with his experience and we regret that. Sometimes it is a matter that good people don't work well together and perhaps that is the case here. Should we get another opportunity to work with Anthony we will be the wiser for this experience, know how to get to his place better, know the repair parts needed and allow more time on the job for the system to drain down. Time and Material includes Travel time to and from the Job: When Anthony called I spoke to him and explained our time and materials billing. He acknowledged this and explained that his property was difficult to reach because if you pass it then you end up going way out of your way to turn around (Texas Street into Mission Valley. ) So I warned the plumber about this. The plumber stated that it was not easy to get to and even in the complex that the addresses were small and hard to find his unit. That is why it took longer to find the place than it did to get back. Anthony made an attempt to be helpful but then he speculated that we were trying to cheat him instead of trying to reach him when the later was actuality the case Clear directions into the complex would have been more helpful and would have taken the plumber less time. Misidentified Parts: Anthony led us astray in identifying the product we needed. He sent photos of his valve when he told me about the job so we could identify the parts needed beforehand. He described it as a newer (5 yr old) valve. We ordered the stems for the newer valve but it did not come in by the appointment time. Anthony wanted to save money by sending in photos in advance and we were working on that with him. He clearly went to a lot of trouble to set up the appointment and to be there. So after we told him we did not have the ordered parts, we took a new valve apart to use for the repairs. Turns out that because the valve was older than he described originally to us the parts on valve we took apart were incorrect. We didn't charge him for that time or the time to put the valve back together again and didn't even tell him about it. Maybe if we did he would have recognized we were attempting to work with him. Multi Story building water shut downs take time: After shutting the water off the system was bled. This was a multi story building and there was residual water that drained from a higher floor when the plumber went to go see if he had the right parts. Anthony described how he took action to prevent water from getting into the wall cavity and this is commendable. For any water leaks Anthony could have opened up the wall and ceiling in his garage, put fans in the opening to dry it out quicker or if it was more substantial use a shop vac to pick it up. The situation was not ideal for certain and the amount of residual water was reduced by Anthony's quick actions. Caring about our work: The remark that the plumber was causal about the residual water is not an accurate representation of this plumber or his work ethic or attitude about his work. I also took the matter seriously and attempted to address Anthony's complaint too. He told us that the work was done well. He told me that the shower valve that was replaced in the second bathroom only needed an inexpensive repair and that the plumber used his time well. While we tried there were things that could have worked out better. We will learn from these. Our commitment to Anthony and our clients is to focus on continuous improvement. It is part of our philosophy to always learn from any experience and find ways to improve our performance.

Shane Collins of Power and Sons Plumbing came into give us a quote on the parts and labor of installing a back flow preventor for our soda fountain. He was in an out within about an hour. He had all the equipment and tools with him and was able to install the part quickly and efficiently. He noticed one of our pipes was damaged, so he went ahead and replaced it free of charge since he had spare parts in his truck. We also received a quote on multiple floor sinks which we plan to install during our kitchen remodel. He quoted us a 3 day turn around time, which was pretty good compared to other contractors we've been talking to. We will most likely go with Power and Sons for that job as well, but I will save that review for another date.

I will never go with "time and materials" again. Apparently I did not read the fine print, the plumber starts charging you when he leaves his office (which I have no way of verifying). So, I am paying nearly $100 an hour for him to drive and every red light cost me more money. At the job, he also took his time and did thinngs that I had not aked for such as changing the angle stops. In my past experience with this kind of work, it should have taken less than an hour. He was there for about 2 hours but the bill said it was 3 hours (which they explain as 1/2 hour of driving and 1/2 hour of time discrepency). The good news is that water comes our of the facucet and drains out of sink. So, I guess he did the job.

Response from Powers Plumbing
Sometimes things don't turn out the way you would like but this was not the case with this job. The member was not home when we did this repair and this can often result in a failure to understand what a job entails. His father was home at the time and observed the plumber doing the work. The member said his dad reported that the plumber was working the whole time on the job so that was not the issue. The plumber presented the parts used, time for travel and for labor on the work order that his father signed. He had two different angle stops installed and they were going different directions so they were changed out and this was not what the member expected. Not sure why the member thought that the job should have taken a shorter time except for the fact that he was not there to speak to the plumber about the installation. The plumber on the job is a faucet expert who has 27 years of experience. We believe that a time and materials pricing situation is ultimately the most fair for our customers. You don't overpay if you have a less complicated job and things go smoothly By setting a per project price that means that everyone pays for the worst case scenario but we might end up changing this since it is not the way most other plumbers do business. We don't charge a trip charge but do charge for our travel time. Usually this can be verified by using the map programs to get an idea on the amount of time and can be helpful when you are comparing our charges to those who charge a trip job. The closer by you are to our shop the less it costs but believe it or not we have clients from Imperial Beach to Del Mar because they trust our work and like our service. We don't require people to be home when we do their work and we have been doing things the same way for almost 100 years. It is always good to be home when someone is working on your house. If you want to verify the time then we strongly encourage you to check the online map programs and stay home when you need work done so that you can monitor the progress of the job and ask questions along the way.
