It turned out that our exhaust piping was not to code so they couldn't get a permit to do the installation, but my experience with them was great.

The replacement of my old water heater went beautifully. The installer was professional and personable. He informed me of some upgrades I could make (at + cost) which I said no to. I say this because they need to inform you of changes to the building codes. I have no complaints and would definitely use this provider again.

FAST was very responsive and i appreciated their service. The water heater was relatively old, and I contacted FAST after having purchased the big deal. They were responsive and worked with me on a time to look at the installation. After looking at the small space, the tech recommended a particular size and model. He installed it quickly and efficiently.

We had paid for a 40 gal. but upgraded to larger 48 gal. Code upgrades plus permit, extra item added $ but good installation and good for the house which is a rental. Solid and professional work. Hoped for Energy Star WH but won't fit in the space available. A bit disappointed that Deal leaves out so much, 800. Grew to about $1700.

Update 4/29/14: Fast Water Heater reached out to me and agreed to a partial refund to make the costs more reasonable. I'm impressed that they went through this effort to make me a happy customer. They cited overhead costs such as gas to go to the job site, worker's comp, insurance, etc, but I countered that the gas is already paid for from the original install. Citing gas costs again would be double dipping. Anyhow, even accounting for all their overhead, the rate that I agreed to is more than what I can charge for my services (I am a consulting professional engineer with almost 20 years experience.) Original review: Experience started good enough...I purchased the Big Deal on Angie's List for $849...and the office staff responded promptly and set up an appointment for a Saturday install (3/8). From the reviews I expected that my house needed some upgrading of fittings and such to bring it up to code (built in 1960). But when the called me, they told me that the items needed to upgrade to code would cost an additional $500 (including tax)!! And that only included a new gas line, plumbing the gas valve to be in the front of the heater, new water lines, and to repair and replace a cracked exhaust pipe. I asked how long it will take to do the job from start to finish with the install and these upgrades. They said 2-3 hours. So for some piping, fittings, new section of exhaust pipe, it would be about $50 of materials which means they wanted $400+ for maybe an extra hour of labor?!? I feel like I was taken advantage of, having already pre-paid $849 for the water heater install (Angies List Big Deal) and then asked again to pay $500 to bring stuff up to code. I don't mind paying a fair price for professional work done, but $500 for these so called upgrades is way excessive!

We are reaching out to Mr. [removed member name] since he is not satisfied. We did review the job photos and there were several items that contributed to cost but that were in fact necessary: a) the flue/vent was heavily corroded to the point there was a four inch open gap that was leaking carbon monoxide into the home (this is very, very, very bad) so we replaced all of this b) the gas line appeared to also have some possible issues as the gas shutoff valve was extremely corroded - we also replaced this - and c) the vent pipe going into the wall was not properly attached and needed a fire stop. Looking at the photos, the water heater was a large potential hazard as it was previously installed and was in fact a significant safety issue. The additional costs were justified based on what we found. That said, we will still reach out to Mr. [removed member name] to make sure he understands what he had and try to make him a satisfied customer.

The energy efficient one I wanted would not fit in the space available, so the same type as the existing one was installed. There were a couple of additional items that were needed (overflow drip pan, new gas shut off valve, city permits, etc.) that added to the original cost, but overall the cost and installation were great. The installation tech T Sawri (sp?) was courteous, professional and explained all aspects of the project very well. I would definitely recommend Fast Water Heater Company for water heater replacement projects.

I signed up for this service as a deal offered on Angie's list. I expected to pay a $95 up charge for a larger water heater as described in the deal. I was somewhat disappointed that there were $270 in additional costs when it came time to actually install the device, all for minor items that I think should have been disclosed in the original "deal offer" rather than a generic listing of other items may be needed. The technician arrived as promised and competed the work in a professional manner.

They did a good job and they showed up the same day. But I could have purchased the same water heater at Home Depot for approximately half the price and installed it myself. $179 of the cost was for a non-optional city permit that I really do not see any value in since it was a replacement installation and not a new one. When I inquired about the (installed) price of comparable water heaters from other companies I was told that the city permit is optional with them and that most of their customers decline it. I was quoted $1,100 and change for a comparable Bradford White model but I had already scheduled for the GE.

Response from Fast Water Heater Company
We will reach out to this customer. We apologize that they found the cost expensive. The permit for San Jose is in fact one of the most expensive on the west coast. It is in fact illegal to not get a permit on a water heater replacement. But, more importantly from the customer's perspective, if you don't get a permit and the water heater leaks, your insurance company can - and often does - deny the claim. 75% of water heaters leak within 10 years. The average claim for water damage is about $4,444. Also, there are about 100 deaths per year due to carbon monoxide for water heaters and tens of millions of dollars of fire damage. So, we realize - and truthfully share the customer's frustration about the permit cost in San Jose. And, when you pull a permit, you then have to get the water heater up to current plumbing code. However, in the long run, it is actually better for the customer in terms of liability. Also, any installer that tells you it's "optional" is in fact breaking the law. We do 100% agree that the permit cost in San Jose is outrageous. Lastly, we apologize for slow response. We had not claimed this profile in San Jose and so just saw this review.

Huge add-on to price! By the time they were through adding all the things they said were needed to bring it up to code, it was an extra $600. I didn't pay anymore than I would have with any other provider, but it was no deal.

The workers were extremely professional and focused. We ordered a 50 gallon water heater, but it was too big for the space allowed. So we ended up with a 48 gallon tank. The workers had to make a modification to the railing near the water heater so the tank would fit in the space. This was done carefully and to my satisfaction. I was given an estimate for the extras needed to bring the system up to code. It included the cost of earthquake straps which were part of the original cost: so I called the company and informed them of the oversight. They quickly adjusted the cost to reflect the change. At the end of the job, I felt very satisfied with the work and the materials. We have not had any further issues and are enjoying our new water heater. I would certainly recommend this company to anyone needing a water heater, or water heater service.

We called the company to ask about the $849 water heater deal on Angie's List, and specifically asked about a local rebate program. We were told that the $849 deal didn't include a qualified water heater, but if we wanted one it could be added at no net cost (the rebate pays for the better water heater leaving the deal at $849). We opted to do that and scheduled an appointment the same day. The installer arrived on schedule and was very nice. However, it turned out there was some confusion about the water heater capacity, and he only had 40 gallon heaters of the kind we wanted that day. He offered us all the options among the 50 gallon tanks he could get by tomorrow, pointing out that only 6 year warranty models were included in the Angie's List deal (if you want a 12 year warranty, it runs a lot more). We decided to go with the 6 year warranty 50 gallon energy star model as originally agreed. The next day a different installer arrived at the appointed time, and again he was very polite and professional. We looked over the price sheet and discussed the details of what needed to be done, which we had partially worked out with the installer the previous day. It turns out that there was a mistake, and we weren't actually qualified for the local rebate program (bummer), but since we had been promised the energy star heater for the same net cost he agreed to cut us the same deal even without the rebate -- much appreciated! So how did the bill come to $1120? Well, it turns out that some extra work had to be done to install the water heater that wasn't covered in the $849 deal. There was a wood platform supporting our old water heater that was no longer needed and wouldn't fit the new one, so that had to be removed. Additionally there was some work needed to bring the new heater up to code, since the building codes had changed since our previous water heater was installed (our house was built in 1999, and the previous heater had likely been there from the start). It seems there will generally be significant costs beyond the base price of $849 for most customers in my area due to the code changes, so be prepared for that. Overall the installer did a great job and the new energy saving water heater is working nicely. I'm happy with the work, and would recommend Fast Water Heater Co. to my friends.

After buying the $849 water heater big deal, it turns out I didn't need a new water heater. Instead they were able to repair my water heater for $250. They were very easy to communicate with and showed up at a good time for my tenant, about 5 hours after I initially called them. I am a long distance landlord and honestly, it couldn't have gone smoother considering the circumstances. I felt the $139 service fee and $110 for the heat coupler seemed a bit high. However he was honest enough to tell me that I didn't need to replace the hot water heater saving me at least $600. I would definitely use them again.

The old water heater had been decased by the previous resident. There was no casing, so it was a several hour process for him to remove it. When he looked at it Wednesday, he told me that the 40 gallon that was promised with the deal I purchased would not fit into the space. He said we could special order a 30 gallon from another company, but he wasn't sure if they would have one locally. The company ended up having one locally, and he picked it up Friday morning and installed it. I ended up saving money because we opted for the smaller water heater. It was several hours of hard labor with no break, and he worked hard to complete the installation in a timely fashion.

The actual installation was excellent. George was punctual, polite, and very professional. Before starting the job he explained exactly what he was going to do and what it would cost. He was done in less than two hours and was every neat. Before leaving he provided warranty information, how long to wait before the water would be hot enough to use (1/2 hour) and the recommended temperature setting. The only difficulty I experienced was with setting up the appointment for the repair. The heater had sprung a bad leak so I needed a new heater fast. I saw the coupon but called the vendor first to explain my situation. The reply was that I would have to purchase the coupon first then call them back to set the appointment for the next day. I did as instructed but when I called back (within 10 minutes) I got a different person who said the appointment would take 3 to 4 days because they only assign two technicians to those purchasing the coupons through Angie's List. I was upset because I could not wait that long and explained what the first person had said. I would not have purchased the coupon had I known I had to wait that long for a new heater. They put me on hold for 5 minutes and then provided me with a reasonable appointment for the next day. Then they asked for the current model and serial number of the heater that needed to be replaced. I didn't have the information at that time but I told them I would call back with the info. I called back three times, waited an average of 8 minutes each time, listening to the robot repeatedly telling me my call was important and would be answered soon, before I got cut off all three times. I finally gave up and called after hours to leave the info on the answering machine.

. It was a great experience, it is up to code, working well and done. Our water heater was over 25 years old and we were concerned that it might leak soon in our garage. Thanks Fast Water Heater and Angie!
