Response from Payless Handyman
Reviews like this amaze me. We don't service Hisperia, she gives no facts and even if she had called we would have told her we don't service this area. So because we don't service an area we get a bad mark? I am confident that most people are reasonable enough to understand California traffic. We may be (X) miles away from a destination but it could take hours in traffic to reach. Hours = wages, work time, liability, higher prices. Rather than do that we value our customers and control our prices. LISTERS.... When you read reviews, please, only consider those people we have actually performed services for. All others are not customers. If you have never done business with NASA are your really qualified to give a business type review?

We are so glad the member's daughter found us on the web. As we age we sometimes have special needs. Our sight and balance fade, and everyday simple tasks...well just aren't so simple anymore. That's part of our commitment to good old fashioned personal service. When the member called us she was a little frustrated with the larger companies and home centers she had contacted for a quote. She told us how they were short on understanding her needs but very big on the price. Well not so with our handyman services. We were happy to give her the understanding, time and attention she deserved. Because of her disabilities, we went out to meet with her in her home to see and understand exactly what she needed. We watched, took notes and measured as she would stand, sit, walk and reach. We wanted to make sure that her toilet and handrails were perfectly installed and matched to her for her safety and comfort. It was an honor and we are lucky to have customers like the member. We love saving them money and serving them with the compassion and attention they deserve. On our website when we say “we love our seniors” it’s not just a slogan or some catchy phrase it’s just the way we are.

Les had me go look at door's at a local business and send him pics and code numbers for the style we wanted. He had some contact and we were able to get better doors for slightly less, and better finished, then where I had shopped. Several weeks after we contacted Les he called to arrange a time to check sizing and do the work. As usual Les and his son appeared and worked steadily on the jobs. He was able to finish the half done door and they replaced the front and driveway doors with great new ones. They used a foam to seal around the doors and Les had his son install the ceiling fan. To me the most stand out thing that happened while they were working on our job came when Les was back to install the molding. I was getting dad to the car to take him to the senior center for his exercise class, but my car had a flat tire. Waiting for AAA would mean dad would miss the class and allowing spouse to change it might end up in a trip to the ER, so I told him not to try it. Les, over hearing the discussion stepped up and asked to get the tire changed quickly for us. Dad made his class just fine thanks to Les. It took another week to get the security screen door in place; most of that install was done while we were at dad's Dr's office. The security screen is great and it was good to have a week or so ago when I was home alone sick and someone knocked claiming to know my husband; hoping to bum a ride, when spouse arrived home, just a few minutes later, they were no where to be seen. My doors are great now, thanks to Les and his son.
Description of Work: I have wanted to replace several doors at the house for a long time. The front door was old and latched so badly our dog would bump it open from time to time. My spouse had attempted to replace a damaged side door himself but got the job half done and was unable to complete the work on it. The door to the driveway was also just worn out. I contacted Les when I found out the closed up place next to us is for sale again and that the old owner's estate really wants to turn it into a halfway house. Stonger doors would be a very good idea. We also wanted a good security screen on the front door.My Elderly father who lives with us also asked for a new light in his room, so I also asked Les about the install on a better lighted ceiling fan as well. When contacted Les was quite busy; he said he could do the work and the price was in the range we could swing but we had to wait until the jobs ahead of us were complete.

Payless Handyman provided a quote which was consistent with other competitors in the field. Payless Handyman was very professional and offered suggestions in improving my home. I respected the fact that Payless Handyman was not going to repair something that was not necessary. During the entire process Payless Handyman kept me informed about the progress of the work being performed. Payless Handyman did an excellent job and I would highly recommend them for any household repairs.

We love our seniors! This job had some unique qualities to it. It was necessary to drill and set anchors through stucco to hang the rods on the atrium wall but it's done right (the only way we do things). We also made sure that the bathroom cabinet was anchored to studs so that it would not fall/pull out of the wall, leaving large holes in the drywall, as it had on two prior occasions "fixed" by some other service(s). We try to take the time to find out why things happen and that allows us the chance to not just fix the repair correctly but keep the repair from having to be made more than once (that's the Payless way....do it right....do it once...and save pay less). In this case we found out that her cat loved to perch on the shelf so we made sure that the cat could do so safely because we value the safety of our customers and the ones they care for. Thank you so much for allowing us the chance to help with your repair.

Les did all the work himself. It took a few days, but after each visit, you could not tell that he was there. By that I mean that when he left, he cleaned up his mess. When the job was finished, you could not tell that the door was not an original part of the house. He did a great job and I would use him again, and I did, too. I had a couple of other small things done, like re-attaching the handrail to the staircase to the second floor. It was never installed correctly by the builder. Les attached it to the studs and now it is as solid as a rock! Overall, we were very pleased.
Description of Work: We needed a door installed in a small hallway downstairs. The idea was to create a studio apartment for a 19yr old young man. We needed it to have a dead bolt lock so as to be able to create a separate space for him and for us to be able to lock the rest of the house from the studio. This job required some light drywall, patching and paint matching. We received an estimate from Home Depot and it's contractor. They would only install a pre-hung, off-the-shelf door. They would not do any drywall work, patching or painting. We then went to Angie's List and spotted Payless Handyman. Les came out and gave us an estimate that was cheaper than Home Depot's AND included drywall, patching and color match painting! The door was even better than theirs as it was an odd size and had to be made at a nearby shop. It turned to be a solid core door rather than the hollow core door that Home Depot was going to use.

It went terrible because he flaked. Now it is costing me money because the project is delayed for another week. I would not even consider calling this guy.
Description of Work: I read the reviews on this company along with couple of other handymen and decided to use Les (the owner) after interviewing several handymen. I needed two outlets installed, one was already an existing box and the other one needed to be added 2 to 3 feet above an existing outlet. I spoke with Les and he informed me that they were really busy and that the earliest time they had for me would be one week out unless they were allowed to come by after hours. So I agreed to see him after hours. I told him this was very important and I will have to reschedule my IT people to accommodate his time. Well, I waited for them for two hours and they no showed. Les didn't even have the decency to call to tell me what was going on. Things happen but a true professional would be respectful of other peoples time and inform me that they would not be able to make it. Now I am way off my schedule and I will have to reschedule my IT guys until I get these outlets installed. I hate handymen like this guy. I should have known that anyone who over promises are usually don't keep their words. I definitely would not use this guy for the simple fact that he is not respectful of other peoples time.

Response from Payless Handyman
As part of our conversation prior to setting a tentative schedule I was honest with the member and explained that we were very busy and were already committed and that he might want to call another service rather than wait. He said that because of our good reviews he wanted us to do the work and I told him that “I would try to squeeze him in but he had to understand that because of our current commitments it was with no guarantee” as we were committed on a very complex and taxing job. As it was, late that afternoon we ran into a big emergency situation on site that required all of our recourses and attention until 7:30pm when I could finally call him. After apologizing, I tried to explain to him that abandoning our customer in an emergency to start his job would be a disservice to our existing client. I also told him that the client with the emergency situation, whose job we were committed to, was grateful for us staying late to solve the problem and would not have a problem with us showing up a little late the next morning so we could take care of him. We are committed to our clients and honest and up front enough to tell new clients when we are too busy but will try to work them in with no guarantees as long as they understand that upfront. We are thankful for our customers and will never abandon or push one job aside to start another. We were upfront and very clear with him when we said we would try to fit him in with the no guarantee understanding which he said he understood but I guess I was not clear enough.

Found his name on Angie's List - called Payless Handyman. Les came over the same evening and checked through our "needs" list and made an estimate based on what we wanted done. We met him at Lowe's the next morning (9:00 am) (Friday Oct. 21st) to shop for the materials, paint etc that we needed for the jobs that he was going to do. Also ended up going to Home Depot. We were not charged for any of this time. He started the jobs on Friday (the same day) and worked until 6:00 pm. He then returned on Monday for one half day and Tuesday for one half day - paint needed to dry. When everything was done to his satisfaction and then ours, he submitted his bill. An example -Les installed track lighting in our living room area and kept adjusting the lighting (while on a step ladder) until it was perfect for us for reading. I would recommend him to anyone. Clean, neat and extremely professional
Description of Work: Install track lighting in two rooms. Installed a shower head. Provided clean-up in master bathroom after previous painters. Painted a computer room. Cleaned out bathroom sink. I had this handyman as well as two others come out to my property to give an estimate on several repairs i wanted done. He bid $17,000, the other two bids were $4000 and $5000 respectively. As a contractor myself, this means one of two things to me; 1 either he didn't want to do the job or, 2 he gouges his customers. Needless to say, we went with a different bid and had the work completed wonderfully. I will not request a bid from this person again and suggest if you get one do get others as well. 3-4 times the bid of two other handymen seems quite excessive.

Response from Payless Handyman
We appreciate the chance to give any of our potential clients a free estimate. In this case we met with the member’s mother who walked us through the list of over 40 repairs for this property. We were more than happy to take the time to discuss and suggest a wide variety of options and approaches not previously thought of to the repairs. These suggestions included construction of a rear patio deck made from quality composite decking not 2x4 construction grade studs that will split, crack, splinter and need repainting about ever 3-5yrs and installation of 6” stain grade clear Mahoney hardwood crown molding to match the floors as we were told not paint grade MDF just to mention two. Quality materials like these cost considerably more and proper installation is an important factor for protecting your investment. We are very confident that these types of materials along with the other repairs could not be used and installed properly at the other prices. For example, we would never install floor tile with corners raised 3/8”, uneven grout lines and cuts and bad lay out…you just can’t buy that from Payless Handyman…you can from someone else all day long….but not from us. When obtaining an estimate we always advise getting more than one bid but make sure that all the materials and workmanship are to the same standard. This will eliminate expectations exceeding pocketbook which equals an unhappy customer. Payless Handyman always strives to perform beyond expectations and we will not cut corners or do work that is just ok. We realize we may not be a good match for everyone and advocate that everyone find a good match in price, quality and workmanship like our other customers that have hired us and are very happy with our work and price.

His price was very reasonable. He was very professional and felt comfortable to ask more jobs so I have asked him to fix a couple of sprinklers that are sticking out from ceiling and paint the front door. 2nd job on 6-13-11 (Mon) - Repair of fire sprinkler heads that were protruding from the ceiling. One was on 2nd floor - he got in the attic to repair which was an easy repair. 1st floor has no entry to the attic so he had to cut a square hole to repair it correctly. The builder of the house returned 10 years later to correct the same problem. But, instead of correcting properly, the builder put a piece of a tiny stick (3-4 inches) to push the sprinkler head back up. Les, the Payless Handyman closed the hole after the repair and painted nicely. I can't see where he cut it. I have also learned a few techniques of how to paint, what paint to use, and what tool to use from Les. (The estimate was $500 - I paid $450) 3rd job on 6-15-11 (Wed) - I also asked him to paint the front door, he took it to home (he lives in the same area) and returned with the door when the paint was dried. He closed my front door with a plywood when he removed it and returned in the evening. ($150 labor + Paint cost= Total $181 I paid) I had the 3 different jobs done by Les instead of finding out 3 different people. I liked his professionalism and courtesy. I have been putting off the repairs since I had a few bad experience in the past, now I am very happy that I became a member of Angie's List. I will recommend Payless Handy to my neighbors and friends.
Description of Work: I sent him an email on 6-6-11, called him the next day around 7:30 pm and left a message. Les called me back shortly after, gave me the estimate, and set up an appt. for 6-8-11. (I did not expect him to return my call so soon.) He showed up on time, took the two screens home and returned about an hour later with them. There was no reviews listed on Angie's list so I Googled him and read very good reviews. He replaced screen door 4'x8' and window 2'x6'. His price was less than a half of other competitors and did a good job! In addition, he gave me a senior discount!

We love our seniors!!!! It is such a pleasure to have such great clients to serve. It is said "there are many ways to skin a cat" and I add "but however you decide to skin it do it right the first time." Here is an example... we could have rolled or brushed the front door like most of our competitors would have quick in and out. That is NOT the way we do business. I knew that to achieve the luster and look of a new factory door it must be sprayed with multiple coats of quality paint. So we gave the member the best we could offer. We removed the door, took it to our shop, where we could prep it and spray it in our booth free of dust and dirt. The result was a gorgeous front door with a finish and luster that looked like new and will last for years. We knew that it would take more time and effort to remove the door, prep it and paint it the way we did but we never cut corners and as a result our customers pay less in the long run. Thank you for a great review. **As you all can see we improved our B ratings from the prior review and made them A’s.

We were quite happy with them. We found them on Angie’s List. Les is the handyman who came out. It’s Les and his sons who run the business. He came back to do some additional thing to put on some coping after we got the painting done. They are really good when it comes to their customer service. The quality of their work is excellent. Their price was a little high, but it was fair for the quality of their work.
Description of Work: Payless Handyman remodeled a bathroom for us and the work was completed about three weeks ago. There was some degree of rebuilding. They ripped out some walls in the bathroom, did some tiling and installed a new window. They did everything else except for the painting.

Thank you. The bathroom remodel offered some unique challenges that we enjoyed overcoming. Anytime we deal with older homes with lath and plaster walls, galvanized pipes and water damage and dealing with older electrical materials we know that bringing things up to date involve some really specialized knowledge, experience and skills. That is what we bring to the table with any repair. We will never sacrifice quality, never take shortcuts and always strive to exceed our customer’s expectations. We use the right materials the right way and try to provide the best value for your budget. We enjoyed taking your husband to some of our secret places to shop that ended up saving you hundreds of dollars in materials and gave your bathroom a fantastic look for the dollar. Everytime I see you out and about I'm happy that we stop and say hello and share a smile. We stand ready, willing and very able to serve you when you need us in the future. Thank you for such a great review we will take your comments to heart.
