This is a work in progress but the developmental work (the most complicated) has been highly satisfactory and will likely be completed shortly.

Spoke to Les on the phone and agreed to a time for him to come for an estimate. We are currently in escrow on the property so he was to meet us at the Realtor's office just outside the gate of the gated community. At 15 minutes past the agreed upon time I texted him. He replied he would be another 30 minutes. When he arrived 45 minutes late he called from the gate area ( forgot it was gated and needed to come to the Realty office ). When we finally met him at the home he said that's how the business goes, no apology, just had an emergency call. When I said a phone call would have been nice he said he didn't have to deal with people like me and walked off !!! If he did have an emergency come up he could have called or texted. It is rude and unprofessional to keep someone waiting 45 minutes especially since he knew we had to make arrangements with the realtor to get in, so she was inconvenienced too. Have never had bad luck with Angie's list before but this guy was the worst. I have used Angie's list since 2011 and this is the first negative review I have ever given.

Response from Payless Handyman
Because we are in the home repair business we schedule approximate times of arrival as most business do. Most people understand that any service business like your hair dresser, doctor, internet provider and attorney require waiting even when you arrive at your scheduled time. That's why we use phrases like "we will see you about or around X time." When I arrived at the property the tone and attitude from the customer was rude and inconsiderate. I did apologize saying " I am very sorry but, repairs don't always go how you hope and in emergencies we can't just walk away and leave the customers stranded to come look at a free estimate." Then in her high and mighty better than thou I am from the valley your inland scum attitude expressed she did not care. We respect all our customers and expect the same from them. Those who can not be understanding, considerate and respectful we have no tolerance for. We are here to help all of our clients. We provide free estimates which require time and expense on our side in an effort to serve you. A little understanding goes a long way.

They replaced my old dishwasher and installed a new one without removing any tiles in my floor. Instead they removed a few tiles from the countertop which allowed the dishwasher to be removed. Removing the travertine would have cost a lot more and potentially would have required extensive repair to my kitchen floor. I really appreciated the time they took to explain all of my options.
Description of Work: My dishwasher broke and needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, the previous owner blocked the dishwasher in with travertine. I needed someone to remove several tiles to get the old dishwasher out and put a new one in.

I am an out-of-area Landlord, and needed some repairs done at the property. I called Les, and he was very responsive and knowledgeable when i explained what was needed. He did not need me to be present for the repairs, and worked directly with our Tenant in scheduling a time that was convenient to come out and look at the home and then again to schedule the repairs. He even was able to coordinate a Saturday repair appointment to accommodate my Tenant. Really appreciate having someone local that I can call on if something goes wrong at our property. Thanks!

Payless Handyman was very responsive. They replied to my request for a quote right away, and were available to begin work exactly when I needed them. They always showed up on time and thoroughly explained everything that they were doing. The people who came to work at our home were all very courteous and professional. We were preparing our home for sale and they did a lot of different small jobs within the timeline we needed them to. If I noticed something that didn't look quite right, they corrected it immediately. I thought their prices were a bit high for some of the smaller projects, but there is no question that their work was very high-quality.

This guy was absolutely great! I explained what we needed and he said he does not do it, however it walked me through how to get the item that we needed exactly! I did what he told me to do and I found the part for much less than it would have cost to have someone do it, this guy was professional and if I ever ever needed his expertise again, I would not hesitate to contact him or recommend him to people to use....Thanks so much, you were awesome!!!

I made the mistake of having Les provide an estimate for some less expensive repairs I needed performed right away and some other more expensive projects I wanted completed in phases in the near future. My guess is when I asked him to begin with some of the less expensive projects first, he lost interest in working with me. He did not return calls, and when he finally did call back, he said he was working on a large project but would call me back to schedule but I never heard back from him. I found him to be non-responsive and would not recommend him. It's too bad because I had planned to give him my business.

Great experience! Les is friendly, courteous and professional. He didn't tire of our endless questions and his attention to detail is amazing! He went to at least 6 flooring stores to find a match to our existing laminate floor. We were always told what he was going to do and when. Also, if he needed anything (color selection for paint) etc., we were told well in advance. Lastly, his estimates we spot on both in regard to cost and time. Would I use their services again? Absolutely!

Less called me and explained that they were really busy! I told him that I had huge boxes of unassembled furniture staring me in the face laying on my floor. He told me that the only day he could make it was this upcoming Wednesday. I told him thank you and got off the phone. Moments later, Les called me back and told me that he could feel my agony... My 24 year old daughter is autistic and was really uncomfortable with all the disorder in our home. Les explained to me that he had a worker who could come early this morning to put together the furniture! A nice young guy name Chad was at my door first thing this morning! He put all my furniture together as if it were no big deal!!! He knew exactly what he was doing and was very professional! I am forever grateful to Payless Handyman and I will forever keep them in my call log for services I need in the future! My daughter was so excited watching Chad put together her headboard! Now we are both very happy indeed!!! Thank you Les and Chad for blessing our day!!!

The people that came to replace the doors originally left a gash, in one of the new doors, Les called and told me about it since my husband was home at the time and I did not see it, He mentioned they told him we could paint over it. We were not happy and he agreed to send the guys back out, when I got home a few minutes later , I sent him a picture and he agreed the door needed to be replaced again, He sent the guys back out with in a couple hours and they replaced that door with a new one. We were very satisfied at that time. When he came to inspect the doors, I requested another repair be done, and he mentioned he could get to it during the week. He would get hold of me early in the week to schedule. It has now been 3 weeks and I have not heard back, One thing I can not stand is not being contacted when promised, Where as I gave him an A on the work performed, I am not forced to look elsewhere to get someone to repair under the sink. unfortunately there is no "Maybe" button on whether i would use him again, I really wanted to , however have not heard back from him in 3 weeks.

Les and his crew were very punctual throughout the entire restoration. A detailed list of repairs were given to me prior to the start of the job. I was given approximate times for the jobs to better schedule my day. I was able to schedule my days accordingly because Les was able to give me durations for each day. What Les Stated at the beginning of the work is what was done. No hidden surprises. There was great pride in the work that was performed. The work was clean and after the work day was complete, Les and his crew made sure the area was left clean. Very professional and talented team. I will definitely use Les again. One thing that I found very respectful is that when Les and his crew came in to the house, they would remove their shoes at the door so to not dirty my floors. This was awesome. Thank you Les and your team for a great experience.

I called Payless Handyman on a Tuesday morning. Tuesday afternoon Les was there taking a look at my door and window. By Saturday afternoon the door was replaced and the window was fixed just as promised. Home Depot told me the door was a special order and would take three weeks to get. Les had it in three days at a lower price. The window springs are not sold at local stores and they had to go to Los Angeles to get them. They were able to save me countless hours and money just trying to locate the replacement springs. I definitely plan on using Payless Handyman for future projects.

I did countless hours of research and read all the reviews and Les was the first contractor I contacted to give me an estimate. He was very pleasant on the phone. He was running a few minutes late and he called before hand to let me know he was stuck in traffic. I appreciated the update since I took off an hour early for work so I can meet with him at 5 pm. By the time I would've gotten home it would've been 6 pm and I didn't want to meet with contractors late. Les arrived as he was very professional, nice and gave us many helpful tips and suggestions which I appreciated. To be honest, he asked me what my budget was. I wasn't comfortable with that because it's like going to a car dealership and letting the salesperson know how much you're willing to spend. I just wanted to know what his estimate was. He never measured anything nor brought any paperwork. I was clear that I wanted a 2 bathroom remodel and that I wanted one contractor to complete the job because I am a working professional that does not have time to hire different worker for each job (paint, tile, installation of new vanity, tub/shower, vent, etc). He is very detailed in which I liked and I felt comfortable he would get the job done right. Unfortunately, he never gave me numbers of a range on what it would cost. I figured he needed time to write the estimate and Les told me that he would write up an itemized list of what the project would cost. LAs soon as he left, I told him that I would email him my Excel chart that I created before hand on what projects I wanted and prioritized them. I was prepared by having photos of ideas for the remodel. He requested to email him the photos, so I zipped up the files and my chart and emailed him immediately because I was eager for his estimate. He didn't tell me when I would expect a response back but it's been since Tuesday. He never replied to my estimate nor replied to my email. Les was at my house for nearly 2.5 hours ranting and raving about how great him & his sons are and bragging about his reviews on Angie's list and Google. He even explained to me why he didn't get the number #1 local review. I wasn't interested in that as I just wanted him to give me numbers. It was more of a marketing estimate rather than the details of my home. This I already knew, since that is why I contacted him. I even gave him the coupon for the free estimate on Angie's list. I was prepared and willing to spend money but I suppose my job was too small for him to give me an estimate or perhaps I didn't tell him how much money I had to get the project done. The least he could've done was respond to my email and tell me if he was not interested in working on my house. He mentioned big commercial jobs that he did for Nike and KFC. His contact info is a bit misleading as I thought he would do smaller home projects. In sum, waste of time. He didn't need my money and that is okay as I just signed on to a different contractor who actually gave me an written estimate. Be prepared to listen to him brag. Wasted each other's time but I got some helpful tips from him. Nice guy but he made me feel miniscule. I was also interested in having him to a room addition.

Response from Payless Handyman
We are sorry to have this type of review especially since we spent so much time on shopping for and selecting materials and samples that we never even got a chance to submit. We were called out and we did spend time reviewing the projects with the client. We also made some suggestions about closet space and options for room additions as well as discussing the pros and cons of each option in an effort to help them make the decision that would be right for them. We are sorry to hear that spending this time was considered a waste. We also feel it is important to get to know our clients and for them to get to know us. In sharing our history and experience with clients it allows them to asses our abilities, experience and history to determine if we would be a good fit for the project. The 1,300 sq. ft. 3 bed one converted, 2 bath home built in 1985 is perfect for the upgrades they were looking for. After looking at pictures, walking each room and project area, from which I can determine size, I explained to her that it would take a few days for us to put together a detailed estimate for her as we needed to shop some material options to give her the look she desired based on the pictures she emailed that night. We met at about 6 pm on Tue. and on the following Monday, three business days, we get this review. Three business days to shop for material options like tubs, wall surround options in tile and other solid surfaces, floor tile, base molding options as well as closet doors, lighting fixtures, crown profiles and special LED lighting which was all suggestions and options we offered during our 2+ hours together. We take our estimates very seriously and do everything in our power to stay within budget. To do this we take the time to price out specific materials upfront to deliver quality throughout. When a client gives me photos of specific looks we do our best to deliver that look and not some generic version. An accurate estimate must consider specific materials and that takes time. As I explained to them prior to asking about budget "It makes no difference to me what the budget is...the numbers are the numbers" asking that question lets me know if can use quality materials and fixtures, like the pictures, or if we need to look at less costly options. After all you can spend $300 for a tub or $3,000. you can buy tile for .45 cents or $6.00 a sq ft., a vanity at home depot can cost $149 or you can spent $2,500 not to mention counter tops, sinks and faucets. When we bring an estimate to the table we also bring samples of materials so you know what you are buying. I would be surprised if the other contractor did that within a day or two. In short, we are sorry we lost this chance to build a dream. Perhaps our attention to details was not the right fit for this situation.
