Description of Work: Was having problems with furnace rarely failing to ignite. Got all the most obvious causes checked out with no failure found. Also got rough estimate for repair cost when problem goes solid in the future. Repairman was straightforward in his discussion, courteous, and not pushy.

Description of Work: They came out on time and checked my heating system. It turns out it was a faulty thermostat. They gave me an estimate for them to replace it and instructions on how I could do it myself. It was more cost affective and easy for me to do myself so I just took care of it. It was nice of them not to just take my money but to offer me options. I only paid the Angie's List price for them to come out and evaluate the problem. I would use them in the future.

Description of Work: It's been a while since they came out, but actually didn't do any "service" per se. Just came out, looked at it, said I'd need new units soon, and that was that. After they came out, I decided to contact my home warranty company, who did have a service person come out, who performed very helpful service: Tightened up our electrical connections, and we've had no ongoing problems since they came out.

Description of Work: Diagnostic went great parts were replaced but lost coolant pressure and had to have them come out again to fix. Heat wave so they were giving appointments almost a week ahead. Not happy about that with a small baby in the house but what can you do. Second time around they said loss of pressure probably due to first time checking of the pressure... Gave me a break on price because of that

Called four different companies to get written estimates Flanders was the last company to come out and inspect the unit and write an estimate. Since the central air unit would use the the new Puron refrigerant the 20 year old furnace would also be replaced at the same time (plus it was nearing the end of its estimated life expectancy and it made no sense to have units that were not fully compatible). Bret Flanders (the owner) came out and talked to me and was right on time for our appointment. Bret was the only contractor to write the estimate on the spot including complete model numbers for all equipment that was being bid upon (some of the estimates didn't include this). Flanders price was by far and away the best plus he was the only one that really explained the benefits of the Carrier brand over others. He also listened to my concerns because he ended up recommending the Zone Control for our home as the upstairs never cools as well in the summer and heats up too much in the winter. The Carrier infinity system Bret recommended was also a more efficient system than others that were quoted. Flanders crew started work on a Friday (as was the plan) and they expected to finish by Monday afternoon. They arrived on time and worked quietly and efficiently and cleaned up after themselves every day. They took good care not to damage any of our belongings when moving things or working inside the house. On Monday the crew informed me as soon as I got home that there may be a problem installing the Zone Control so Bret was called out to the job to see if he could find a work around. Bret found a way to fix the problem but it took an extra days work and upped my cost by $500 (I didn't mind paying the additional because I really wanted the Zone Control). They finished work on Tuesday and I love the system! Quiet, cools the upstairs and is way more environmentally friendly!. The office staff was also very courteous and professional and sent me the PG&E rebate forms a few days after completion of the work with instructions on how to fill out and send in. I would recommend Flanders Heat and Air to friends and neighbors!
Description of Work: AC unit failed during a late August heat wave (compressor went out). Flanders Heat and Air installed a Carrier Infinity 16 SEER, two stage, 4 ton air conditioner unit and a Carrier Infinity 96 AFUE furnace with variable speed motor, filter box and Carrier Zone Control with two thermostats. The installation was made more difficult because of limited crawl space and the configuration of the homes original ducting underneath the house.

Our old air conditioner has given us problems for a few years, and the last technician tried to fix a leak by injecting some kind of substance into the system to seal the leak. That didn't work so I called Flanders out for a service call. The bottom line was that there was a blockage in the AC system which could have been in the outdoor unit, in the furnace in the attic, or somewhere in between, and they couldn't make it work by a simple recharging of the coolant. They gave us the options of repair or replacement. They didn't try to talk us into the most expensive option, but just explained them. Since we were never happy with the old system we chose the replacement option. We also chose the best available system that they sold, and that's why the price is pretty high. We could easily have done it for a decent amount less if we chose to. When installation day came the crew arrived on time and there were four, maybe five technicians and the owner of the company. Every one of them was courteous and friendly, and they were very careful during the installation, which was extra difficult since the furnace is in the attic. They removed the old furnace and installed the new one without damaging anything. They worked the whole day and cleaned things up before they left. The new system works great, much better than the old one. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. PS - The reason that I rated the price "good" instead of "excellent" (or "lousy" for that matter) is that I didn't get any other bids. There may be companies that would do the job for less, but I got good vibes from Bret Flanders and did not really want to shop price. I wasn't satisfied with the last three techs that worked on the system, so since I felt comfortable with him, I decided to give the job to him.

Quote process went well - on time - explained options - good price compared to competitors- crew showed up on time - completed work in 1 day - kept me informed through out the day. Only issue was the clean up was terrible --- lots of screws, nuts, bolts and metal shavings left in garage and driveway. Took my wife and I about 90 minutes to clean up to avoid potential flat tires. Besides the clean up they did a very good job. Only thing I would change is that I would have closely inspected the work area before they left. p.s. they did the paperwork for the rebates -- no other company offered this service.

Flanders was one of five companies on my original call list. I was looking for a 4 ton, two stage, multi-speed gas furnace and 13 or 14 seer AC unit. However, after the 3rd company and bids ranging from $5,800 to $10,000+ for comparable equipment, I had decided to accept the middle bid. About that same time, a neighbor recommended him. So I decided to give them a call. Bret set up an appointment only a few days later. Because of a better energy company rebate ($300) for higher efficiency furnaces and a promotional Carrier rebate ($1000), we discovered that we could get the top-end Infinity 94%+ two-stage, multi-speed furnace, 17 seer AC unit and Infinity thermostat for a very attractive price. Even with the extra cost to position the AC in a more distant location and re-route the electrical service, the total equipment and labor cost was only a few hundred dollars more than the bid I had nearly selected for a quality Amana furnace but less efficient 13 or 14 seer AC unit. Bret's team were on time, professional and well organized. They got started on removing the old equipment and then Bret came by to give some direction and assistance for a portion of the work. For the most part, they finished the whole job in one day (working late; until 7:00 pm). Bret then returned another day to complete some final items. They made some plenum, duct and condensate drain line repairs at no additional cost. The electrician even gave me tips how to fix an unrelated electrical issue in the garage. We now await an appointment by the city building inspector and final permit. Bret's office was also very helpful after the installation--they sent me the energy company rebate paperwork already filled out. All I needed to do was to sign it and mail it in.

Bret Flamders did the estimating; very thorough and professional. Work scheduled 10 days from acceptance. Initially three men on job and then additionally 2 others showed up. Work started at 8am and completed at 4:30pm cardboard laid down to avoid soiling. Men performed professionally and did a good job. Also, clean up and vacuum area. Very pleased. Carrier Infinity system for both A/C and furnace installed.

We finally had our 30 year old furnace inspected by a contractor and it was found to contain several large cracks in the firebox, thus potentially allowing carbon monoxide into the house. This also necessitated replacing the same vintage A/C unit. We were lucky and had the time to seek multiple bids. Unfortunately, most of the ducting for the units is hung off the finished garage ceiling, and it was flexible ducting, not allowed in our city (most allow) due to fire hazard concerns. This also needed replacement to comply with city code, and was close to one-third of the cost. As a final check that the inspection of the firebox was not a sales device, we had PGE inspect the firebox, and their inspector confirmed cracks were present and turned it off immediately (as they do to protect their liability). We had contracted Flanders just before that, and when we relayed the news, they responded quickly and reprioritized the job. They did a great job all the way around. The hard pipe ducting looks great and Flanders took time to do a quality installation; using "Astro Foil" (bubble wrap with aluminum foil skin on both sides; it has a lower R-value but is very acceptable in our garage setting). The AC unit was appropriately sized. All wall penetrations for the AC piping were repaired, and thought was used for locating the new piping. Because of the ducting issue we had the whole installation permitted and the inspector stated it was a quality job. As is typical, the inspector required some modifications and those were handled and passed. Unfortunately, the wiring for the new A/C unit was initially switched, and we had electrical problems until it was trouble shooted. The repair involved replacing one of the main breakers as a precaution, but Flanders was quick to respond to problem and again reprioritzed their day to meet us. We've not had any problems since, and very much enjoy the new furnace and A/C unit; moving from a nominally 65% efficiency unit to 90-plus% makes a big difference.

Awesome! We went with Flanders due to Angie's List, his being a Carrier dealer, and general unhappiness with our other HVAC guy. Bret measured and estimated a new furnace, pointed out where our old furnace airflow into the house was losing a lot of heat. Since our home has two furnaces, he also volunteered to check the other furnace out and fix a pipe, showing me how to use the thermostat on our other unit. The install was scheduled quickly, happened timely. After the install they made arrangements for the unit to be permitted. Even though the city wouldn't give advance notice of when the inspector would come out, they accommodated the day in their schedule. The inspector commented on the quality of the installation. The inspector made two recommendations (not related to code) and within the hour they were done. The furnace is great, they included the Carrier Infinity thermostat, a lifetime air filter and box. I can't imagine being any happier than I am. I strongly recommend them!

The owner, Bret Flanders gave us an estimate that was far below other companies we approached. He also assured us that we could install a new 4ton system with the existing coil box and ducts, as a few other companies had said we would need to replace those things. He also told us that we would not need a new pump to move the excess water away from the house. His team ran PVC under the house in the crawl space which was included in the quote. Apparently other providers charge for a pump to avoid having to go under the house. They also provided duct testing, which not many providers do. This will allow me to get a $600 rebate from PG&E. Ron and Ernie arrived promptly and were very courteous and efficient. Bret came by and brought them lunch so the team could keep working. They also helped fix a filter issue with the existing furnace, even though that was not a problem related to the A/C install. They finished when they said they would at the quoted price. Everything works great!
Description of Work: Ron and Ernie added a new 4ton Carrier A/C condenser and coil, tested all the ducts, enlarged the return duct and added electrical wiring for the new thermostat and the outside breaker.

Bret Flanders, the owner, came out to do the estimate, my 4th estimate for the project. Our house presented several significant and unusual obstacles to the project, but in every single case. Bret's solutions and proposed compromises were innovative and more desirable - in terms of performance and/or aesthetics - than those of any of the past 3 estimators. When his estimate came in around the middle of the range, I hired him on the spot. Tammy, the office manager, worked with me to get my job scheduled around other jobs and our horrible weather recently. Once that juggling was done and the final dates were set, the job was done and done well on those dates as promised. They said 2.5 days, and they did just that. Bret's guys, Ernie, Ramel, and Art, were punctual, hard-working, courteous, and tolerant of our too-friendly yellow Labs. They communicated excellently and consulted me about any unexpected problems they encountered. Only the inspection remains. I am a happy customer.
Description of Work: Replaced old gas heater with new one (Carrier). Replaced 3 runs of ducts under house, rusted-out cans, and registers. Added 2 new runs under house and add 2 new registers. Installed new 3.5 ton Carrier air conditioner. Moved heating/air return upstairs, installing lifetime washable filter in new return grill. Pulled permit and obtained inspection.
