He check the heating unit then went in the attic to check the ducting. He said the ducting was fine and at first said there was nothing he could do short of replacing all our ducts. He then thought of an option for running one section of new ducting to bring more air to the cooler part of the house. We are still deciding what to do but will definitely consider this company when we move ahead.
Description of Work: I used the service call coupon to have them inspect my ducting because we have an area of our house that is colder than the rest.

He came and determined that there was an error on our furnace identifying a part that needed to be replaced. He said he would get back to us on a cost to replace that part. After a week of no response we contacted a different provider who came and replaced the part, which he said was a spare kept within the furnace. In other words if the provider had really desired to fix it, he could have done so on the evening he was here.

I was looking for an estimate to repair my inoperable HVAC. I wanted this done in preparation for the coming winter. It turns out there four legged creatures shorted the wire located right at the external vents. He made the repairs right then and there and took care of the problem. I am very thankful it was taken care of and my family will be warm during this cold front. Mahalo Nui Loa

The good news: - He was early. He called and asked if he could arrive in 15 minutes which was several hours before his scheduled time. - He was very friendly and professional. - He got right to work and finished in less than 30 minutes. The bad news: - It was pouring rain and he didn't wear shoe covers so he tracked leaves and water into the carpet. - He cleaned the filter but he didn't reinstall it. Instead he washed it and left it outside under the eaves in the rain. He gave me directions of how to open the front of the heater, install the filter and then put the heater back together. - He mentioned that he was injured and he was limping. He left us at about 1 PM and said we were his last call for the day. Maybe he was in pain and that's why he didn't dry the filter or wear booties; but, I don't think that I as a customer should have to have less than excellent service (which is what I notice he gave to other customers based on their comments) just because he was injured. I would have been glad to reschedule; but, I was never asked.

I went through Angie's list to pay and select this company. I took advantage of their very low diagnostic cost of $29 compared to the other companies that were charging $50 to $100. I found the technician to be friendly, courteous and professional. He went straight to work and found the problem within ten minutes. The heater?s Hot Surface Igniter was out. He immediately replaced it with a new one he had in his truck. The price of the igniter he charged me was $120. When I goggled this part online, it was selling for $50 or less in nearly all cases. I don?t think this is a rip off since they do have to make money as a company. Besides, If I went with a company that charged me $100 for diagnostics and $50 for the part, the final charge would be the same.

I met and received bits from three HVAC companies. All three proposed similar furnace/AC equipment and their bids were within a few hundred dollars of each other. Company 1 sent out someone who only did sales and estimates while the representatives from other two companies would also be involved in the installation. The rep from company 1 spent more time trying to convince me to increase the scope of the work, including installing all new duct-work, than he did on the furnace/AC installation. The other two said the duct-work was fine and was installed so that air conditioning could be added in the future. Of these two, I chose Flanders because their rep was good about explaining in detail the work involved and was willing to work with me regarding the type of wall thermostat, the placement of the compressor, and the routing of the cold-air lines from the furnace blower to the compressor. In addition, they were they only company that mentioned the need to get a city permit. Flanders installed the units in one day, as promised, though the workers began almost an hour later than they said they would, hence the "B" rating for punctuality. The crew wore shoe covers when inside the house to protect the carpets, and cleaned up the working area when they were finished. I was able to pull my own permit and save some money by using San Jose's online permit process, though I found it not as straight forward as it could have been. Fortunately the city contact person was prompt in returning my call and helpful in answering my questions. When the work was completed, Flanders' office was willing to arrange for the city final inspection. I would definitely use Flanders' again for my heating and air conditioning needs.

Jeremy was punctual pleasant basically FANTASTIC. Also PGE said that when I had the ceiling insulation put in last year, the contractor did not permit air to go through and covered that up. which is dangerous. Jeremey went up the crawl space and fixed that for me it took just a few minutes but this was done as a courtesy. i have an old ranch house and my business if off a bit due to the Sequester since I sell things that are extra not essentials . I have a home warranty and although the service is not as good as you would get form Flanders ( here it is a week later and they are going to install the valve today ) it will only cost me 60.00 and I pay for it annually. However if I were going to buy a new heater which will probably happen soon. I would certainly trust this company. I felt bad about it but I realize I did sign up for the deal and did not realize a valve was that expensive since I have never repaired a heater before. One thing I was happy about is that this alarm detected the gas. No one could smell not PGE either. Otheriwse the combination of the insulation blocking ventilation and gas leaking from the heater could have creating an explosion. When I moved in this house, it was discovered not by the inspectors but by a really pushy heating and gas company called Freschi that my father had used. He has since passed away so they wanted me to get heaters hepa filters and these 4 guys wanted me to watch a video about the dangers of air quality being poor. in cleaning out the ducts and testing to push products on me, they did find a carbon monoxide leak. I told them I was going to call the home warranty company and they said NO we will buy it and they will pay you. I said no they won't You know that. Then they said "your father would have wanted yo u to buy from us" I said get out of my house.. This was in 1998 and in my mind this was the impression I had of heating and air conditioning contractors. My experience with FLANDERS was totally different. I really think in the Bay Area Angie's list has been great( since i can't speak to anywhere else) If Flanders could could change my skepticism and make me feel guilty about ordering through the home warranty, then I KNOW THEY ARE GREAT.
Description of Work: PGE had been out because I had a gas leak which incidentally was discovered by the permanently installed carbon monoxide-fire alarm done by another great Angie's List contractor Quick Electric. It turned it was a gas leak and PGE said it needed a new valve I have not inspected the air conditioner in a long time. except the valve that I needed a price on.

Flanders Heat and Air is the best company ever! I installed a new wifi thermostat and could not get the unit to function. I contacted the thermostat manufacturer and they send I had done everything perfectly, but together we still could not get the unit to function. I set up an appointment with Flanders Heat and Air explaining my problem. I was all set to have the service call as planned, but I received a call prior to my appointment explaining that it was likely just a blown fuse. Jeremy from Flanders Heat and Air even texted me a picture of the fuse to make sure I purchased the correct one. In about a minute, I fixed the repair myself. Wow ... I have never had such a great experience. I will recommend Flanders Heat and Air to everyone I know for service. I will not hesitate to use them again in the future.

From beginning to end, our job was treated knowledgably, professionally and respectfully. The crew were nice guys and worked diligently for four straight days, always starting on time. They were present for the air duct testing and final city inspection. We are very pleased with the entire job, and have recommended Flanders to friends in the neighborhood.
Description of Work: We had gotten bids from four different HVAC companies and chose Flanders. Their price was very competetive for the amount of work we had done. We had our furnace replaced and moved from a closet in the kitchen out to the garage; all duct work was replaced; and two air vents were rerouted.

We had a very positive experience with Flanders Heating and Air. From beginning to end of the project, we had a very positive experience with this company. The owner, Brett Flanders was on site on the first day and made sure his crew was clear of the project scope. After the first day, Brett was at our site from time to time to check the progress as well as on hand when our city inspector came for the final inspection. Flanders' crew was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. Addressed problems as they arose and resolved issues at hand so that inspection with our city was passed before the year's end so that we get all our proper credits and rebates. Flanders also prepared all the necessary paperwork needed for the energy credits and rebates so that all we needed to do was to review, sign & mail out. My husband and I are both very pleased with Flanders work and how well the new furnaces and air conditioners are working. The $17000 is the cost before credits and rebates--net out of pocket for us is about $ 14000.00 for two furnaces and two air conditioners.
Description of Work: We had 2 Carrier, Infinity furnaces & 2 Carrier Air conditioners replaced by Flanders. Our project was not just replacements, we had the A/C units relocated to different parts of our house and we relocated one furnace from our hallway to the attic. It took a little over a week for the installations, permits passing and all the paperwork done for credits and rebates.

The initial meeting with Bret was very good. I told him what we wanted to have done, and he promptly gave me options and pricing. Bret is a very direct and no-nonsense guy. I think some of the other reviewers are viewing this as rude, but my opinion was that he is a busy guy that has a lot of things going on at once. Which is a good sign. In my experience if you get a contractor that isn't busy most of the time that's a sign that you've picked a contractor that isn't any good. So yeah, Bret is busy, and he's a multi-tasker. At one point he was shoveling in my back yard to make a level pad for the outside A/C unit while talking to his manager back at the office over his bluetooth headset. So I would say if you're the type of customer that values having your hand held over results Bret may not be the guy for you. If you value hard work, and results he is the man for the job. In fact I would definitely recomment Bret to any of my family or friends looking for a quality HVAC contractor. As far as the carrier unit, it has been wonderful. Again I read what another reviewer said on this site stating that the carrier unit is loud, I must disagree again. Our old unit sounded like a helicopter was landing in the house when it was on. The new carrier infinity unit is very quiet. The furnace in my home is directly next to the master bedroom so this was a definite requirement. Another thing about the carrier is that it blows COLD. It definitely has no trouble cooling the house down and keeping it cool. I bought a 4 ton 17 seer unit. It has been awesome. I highly recommend the carrier units. He did pull a permit for us prior to installation, and we did have two inspections. The first time we didn't pass due to Santa Clara county requiring a dry well for the drip line. Which seems silly since the A/C unit drip doesn't drip that much water at all. More water collects in the dirt on the side of the house during the rain. Anyway so we had to schedule a time where Bret's technicians came out, dug a hole, and built the dry well. The inspector showed up a second time and pass the installation. The drain line also had to be adjusted due to being a small amount off of spec. That was a very minor fix which was done during the first inspection. Even with the small details there they did an awesome job, installed the whole unit in a day, and we are very happy with the Carrier brand equipment. Don't hesitate to give Bret a call.
Description of Work: I live in a house with existing central heat, but since we live in a warm area we also wanted to have air conditioning installed. We had the existing very old furnace replaced, had a new duct run, and an a/c unit installed in the house. We chose the Carrier infinity system.

Initial contact with Bret Flanders was positive. I had four other bids all within the same ball park figure of $9,000 (before rebates). I choose Flanders based on Angie List recommendations. Technicians were scheduled 2 weeks after the contract was signed. They took a total of 3 days to complete the installation. Bret only appeared on the job site for the first 20 minutes, outlining the installation to what appeared to be reasonably competent installation technicians. The installation went OK with the following issues: 1.Technician wanted to cut into a load bearing wall. I stopped him and even questioned Bret when he stated it was OK to do this (no, it is not OK to cut into a load bearing). I had to tape and texture the wall that they cut into because they were unwilling or unable to complete the repair themselves. 2.The technician initially tried to hook the power up to an obviously full sub panel even after being specifically told in advance not to do so. I had to stop him from doing this and insisted that it be installed on the main panel. He did this but did not turn off the main before installing the power to the unit even after being specifically asked to do so. 3.Instead of installing a new roof jack, they drilled a hole in the top of the old 5? jack and inserted the new 2? line through it. It looks ugly and according to most HVAC websites, it not recommended. They also did not put a Tee on top of the vent line. With the rainstorms, water occasionally dripped down into unit. I will probably have to fix this myself because Flanders is either unwilling or unable to make the repair. 4.No training or after sale follow-up was conducted. I am still learning how to use the unit. 5.A permit was not taken out until a full 2 weeks after the work was completed. This was despite a specific contractual request to have a permit. A permit is always required to be on site before work commences. Bret should have known this but had to be reminded 4 times. A remedy to this issue in the future would to be requiring a permit on site and to hold $1000 until all signoffs are complete. Bret?s company is obviously successful, but it would appear to be a victim of his own success as I had to make all contacts with the company to remind of what I would consider the obvious. I have a few complaints mainly about the Carrier Infinity unit. Bret specifically sold the unit as being the ?quietest in the industry?. The actual unit however was at least 1/3rd louder than my previous unit (which was 15+ years old). The service technician said that the noise was not from the unit itself, but the fact that air inlet was right below the unit. Had Bret told me of this issue before the installation, I could have taken this into consideration to possibly relocate the unit or inlet ducting to the unit. Based on these issues, I cannot recommend this unit. I give Bret and Flanders a solid B- . Although I plan to hold Flanders accountable for any problems which occur during the warranty period, I cannot provide him with a recommendation. I have recently contracted with another HVAC company for my rental property.

Returned from a 10 day trip to find the air conditioner making an unusual noise so we shut it off. Went to Angie?s List for a local AC resource. Found Flander?s Heat and Air Systems . Jeremie from Flanders showed up very late on Friday (we were an emergency add on), quickly diagnosed a bad capacitor and effected the repair. It was a pleasure to deal with a concerned and professional organization.

Bret Flanders was the perfect saleman for me. He didn't try to sell me anything, just described what he could do to meet the needs I had. Then left. He didn't spend any time convincing me that if I chose his company .....bla, bla, bla. When I finally decided, everything was easily accomplished, contacts, contract, scheduling. He obtained the city permit, and after the installation, arranged for the inspection. His installers were great. Very nice, extremely hard-working and knowledgeable men. They explained things to me as they went along, then cleaned up completely. (His office person needs commendation too, since I'm sure she's behind the efficiency of the operation) Just before the scheduled city inspection, a Flander's man came by to check the furnace. Afterwards there was a call from the office asking me how the inspection went and if any adjustments needed to be made. Flander's mailed me the PG&E rebate information and application form with the technical information filled in.

Bret was responsive and straight forward in his proposal. He provided two alternatives, and wrote up the proposal at the time of his visit. I had a couple of questions and he responded quickly to those questions. Installers arrived promptly, did a great job and cleaned up after they were finished. What I really liked about Bret's company is that I felt that he provided me with his best price initially, didn't try to sell me "up"(although I ended up purchasing the Carrier Infinity product)and gave me very honest feedback on questions I had concerning the air purifiers, duct cleaning and questions about the differences between the two options.

They were responsive, priced competitively, neat, efficient, professional and solicitous of our needs while they worked. They provided a quote the day before Thanksgiving. I accepted their price and they began work on the following Monday. They worked quickly and efficiently, made good decisions on the fly and radically changed the location of the furnace without any hassle over price. Best of all, they finished a full day earlier than they had estimated. The workers were friendly, intelligent, informed and kept us apprised of their progress. They were in and out of the house a minimal amount.

The work went OK. Nothing exceptional nor anything particularly bad. One continued irritant though is that the installer used thick ducting tape very liberally at the duct joints including the section where the filters are installed. The heater came with flexible and very porous filters (which are pretty useless) and I switched them out to the 3M Filtrate ones. Because so much tape was used, some of it gets in the way of installing the fixed size filters. I have to cut corners out of the 3M filters to get them in.
