I obtained appx 10 estimates before making the decision to hire J&J. Theirs was not the most inexpensive estimate, nor was it the most expensive. It was about right in the middle of the price spectrum. There were several factors that eventually led me to select J&J: 1) the superlative reviews on Angie's List; 2) they are local to the Silverlake area; 3) they are certified to issue their own roofing permits; and, 4) the excellent communication (mostly via email) of Matt Glass. He patiently answered my awkwardly posed questions, and tried to explain the process in layman's terms. The job was scheduled to be two days: tear-off on the first day, new installation on the second. However, the crew, led by Eric, was able to finish almost the entire job in the first day alone. Upon leaving, Eric said that he would be back the following day to finish the job. For some reason, that didn't happen. Apparently, there was some slight miscommunication about what little work remained to be finished. However, all was quickly resolved the following day (2 days after the install) when Blake, another ace J&J roofer, assessed the situation, and finished the remaining work, by himself, in less than two hours. Being a small business owner myself, I greatly appreciate the way J & J conducts its business: good product, attentive customer service, reasonable price.
Description of Work: Roofing job. Old shingles were torn off. New flashing was installed for pipes and skylights. New drip edge was added along roof perimeter. New 30-yr fiberglass shingles were installed with premium ridge pieces.

They were really good and really competent. They were very helpful in finding other associated companies for us. We needed other contractors to come in and do other work related to the roof repair. The people that J & J Roofing had recommended were also really good. J & J Roofing had charged us only reasonably.

Thanks for your report! Yep, we keep a list of contractors we trust. We also refuse to enter into any arrangement where we receive (or give) any "commission" for this arrangement, as we that's not in the best interests of home owners. We refer based on trusting the other contractors as our sole basis.

we called a few roofing companies and J&J was the only one that came over to actually view the potential job. we have a small home that was built in 1946 and there were 4 layers of roofing tiles on our garage - some of which were sliding into the backyard. It doesn't rain much here but this roof would not have withstood another winter storm - and J&J came in with the best price - and the best service. We easily passed the rigors of our city's building inspection, (that never happens where we live), and the crew was professional and neat.

It went great. Guys were fast and the work got done according to plan. Mike's great explaining all the options, and in the end, I'm really happy with the new roof. They also worked with me to give an insulation company access to the attic while the roof was off. Really good experience and I highly recommend them. Thanks, J & J! Note: a fair amount of debris fell down into the attic and into some of the vents (we thought the stove fan had broken, but it was pieces of roofing that had fallen in), but I suppose that's to be expected. In the end, great job.

Thank you for your report! I also prefer working with customers that want to understand the details about the job and their options. It's your home and contrary to how some (few) contractors make home owners feel, you have every right to know all the options and what they will result in as far as final product. I appreciate your understanding about the debris. This is something you have a right to bring up to any contractor you work with, but it sounds like something that came up after we were gone. Let us know if it's still an issue; we're completely happy to do everything it takes to arrive at an end product the customer is more than pleased with.

One of the Glass family (Matt-it's a long established family business) came out, looked things over and told me I didn't need a re-roof that a patch (less than half the cost of re-roofing) would last a long time. He also said don't pay too much attention to the alligatoring of the roof it is a cosmetic thing that the roof (an SBS Bitemen type) was in good shape (I knew this). We traded several spirited emails leading up to the work day discussing the work (they did it in a half day).
Description of Work: They did several patches on my flat roof, fixed a damaged fashia, fixed improperly installed gutters and a couple other small things plus they actually cleaned up not only the roof but a patio that led to the roof!

They were excellent to deal with from start to finish. After the initial visit for inspection and measurment by Ed (a very nice guy who arrived earlier than the appointed time on Saturday morning and waited in front until he knew someone was awake), I received a detailed written estimate. There was no pressure. When I made my decision a couple of weeks later after interviewing several contractors, the GM Matt was very accomodating and remained responsive throughout the process. They coordinated with my AC guy (AC was being replaced at the same time) and performed all work as promised. They were clean and thorough. I would use them again and have no hesitation recommending them. One note as a first-timer replacing a roof -

Thank you for your report and for your kind compliments. Good advice regarding our option to plastic the attic, an option we list above and beyond the already included roof and property clean-up upon job completion. Some customers don't care to have this done which is why we list it as an option. I don't want you to have to crawl around in the attic, call us if you want us to send a couple men by to handle it and we'll bill it at sheer labor costs only. 323 913 4190

I called and an appointment was made for 5 days later. John was right on time and did a thorough inspection inside and out. I had been told by estimators with other roofers that we needed $4500 to $7000 of new roofing but offered no evidence that it was needed other than I had called them for a minor leek over the kitchen. John pointed out that the "roof leak" was caused by electrician's installation of a mast for new service panel. It hadn't been sealed! John told me which goop to use to correct the matter and gave me other pointers for simple DIY maintainance. He was friendly, took his time, and then told me "No charge" when I asked "How much?" I thought customer service was dead! When we DO need work, we will call no other.
Description of Work: I was expecting yet another mid-4-figure estimate as I had gotten in the past. BUT John, the owner, said that we had 5-8 years left to our rock roof! And he showed me why while we were both on it. He pointed out some very minor precautionary fixes that we could do ourselves and told me the specific products with which to do them. So did he perform a service? You bet! And for sure we'll use J&J for all future roofing work.

Began on a promising note with the prompt arrival of Rick, the estimator/job foreman, who presented me with a reasonable quote. What really sealed the deal for me were two crucial selling points: 1) That his company would respect the aesthetic integrity of my house 2) That he would show up at some point to make sure the workers were doing the job as promised. On the workday, the father/son roofers arrived early and waited in their car. I thought they were waiting for Rick. Instead they were sitting out a drizzle. When they got to work, I stayed in my guest house. Three hours later, they came to tell me they were done. Turns out Rick was a no-show, having left the workers to their own devices. Some devices. I just stood there appalled, gaping at the sloppy, slapdash eyesore of a job. The roof floor was okay, but the surrounding walls were an absolute nightmare: Sealing material had been slopped-on high above the flashing in in a haphazard, zig-zagging pattern. Unsightly clumps of black g*** lined the front edges of the roof in the same slovenly manner; and the metal chimney was an ugly mess as well. So much for respecting the aesthetic integrity of my house. So much for the job foreman showing up to make certain that would be the case. When I expressed my displeasure to the workers, they made a cursory attempt to clean up the mess, only to beat a hasty retreat when I wasn't looking. Classy move. To the company's credit, their customer service response was quick and decisive. Rick was incommunicado, but I managed to contact a tech supervisor named Blake who said he'd come right over. True to his word, he arrived in 20 minutes. He inspected the work, took pics from all angles, and was clearly sympathetic to my situation. Even he couldn't understand why the workers had laid the sealant so high above the flashing and in such an erratic pattern. Kudos to Blake, who was calm, collected, and above all eager to make things right. Truth be told, there was no way to defend the shoddy workmanship. Instead, Blake explained in detail his approach to rectifying the job. This being Friday, he promised to return first thing Monday and redo the work to my satisfaction. Needless to say, the weekend couldn't end soon enough. Come Monday a.m., Blake came as promised, along w/a roofer named Eric. They spent three hours redoing the roof, which necessitated much sanding and painting. Under the circumstances -- they're roofers, not house painters -- the guys did stellar work. Blake even came back the next day to do some touching up. I also received heartfelt mea culpas from Rick, as well as from John, J.J.'s owner, and his son Mike. All were willing to own up to their mistakes, which was truly admirable and much appreciated. J &J has many great reviews; so no doubt what happened to me was an anomaly. Still, it's no fun being an anomaly.

Thank you for your report. I'm not being cliche' in saying all points you brought up have been discussed in a meeting with all involved. I appreciate the balanced aspect of your report, in that you took care to mention what we did to take responsibility. The price would be too high for what was originally done (you are correct in stating it was not what was promised and again, that was taken up). What ultimately was done cost more in labor and materials than the job total, but of course it would have all been fine if it was done right the in the first place. May I add that it is customers like you that improve service, because you report with integrity in place of vitriol, which is a healthy way to resolve these things, so my compliments to you in turn on how you dealt with us.

J & J had replaced my roof, but not the skylights, which did not appear to need replacing. During a heavy rain, one of the skylights began leaking. J & J immediately came out, temporarily fixed the leaking, and ordered a new skylight to be installed when the rain stopped. When they installed the new skylight, they charged only for the new piece and not labor. After the skylight was installed, I noticed some some dirt and other materials inside the skylight. I asked J & J to take a look at it. They quickly sent someone out, who took apart the skylight, cleaned out the dirt, and re-installed it. I am very impressed with their responsiveness and customer service, their commitment to making sure the job is done correctly, and the genuinely nice people who work there.

Wow. This was an exceptional experience. J&J was one of 3 bids I got. They were equal to one and about 10% lower than the other. However, the proposal was extremely professional. All details were listed, including a 7 year labor warranty (the longest I found), costs for replacing any damaged wood, etc. They also have a rating from the city that allows them to do their own inspections, which saves the time of having to get an inspector out. The process for our 1400 square foot roof (2-story house on a downside hill) took just 2 days. They were able to fit us in during a 4-day dry spell between rainstorms. First day, 5 guys showed up and removed the old roof in 5 hours. Next day, special crew showed up with a truck that used a conveyor to get the shingles up to the roof. An hour later, a different 4 or 5 man crew showed up to put on the new roof. They finished at 5:30 p.m. Included all sorts of extras, including installing 2 solar fans for free, which we had purchased. Also worked with our skylight installer to coordinate. The next day, my husband went up on the roof and found that the a/c units had not been re-bolted and one gutter had not been cleaned out. I e-mailed J&J, and they had somebody out the next day, with great apologies. By the way, I did not put one cent down or pay anything along the way. When they billed me, they even offered a 5% discount for cash (folding money, not a check) and came over to pick it up. Excellent response and communications, from everyone at the firm.

Excellent work. The estimator provided a very thorough contract - so much so I went with this company instead of another, even though J&J was a little more expensive. The agreement gave me confidence that this roofing company knew what they were doing - and they certainly did. The tear-down was handled very cleanly and with good precision (always a worry on a roofing job). The crew was careful in all aspects and clean-up was superb. They painted the replacement wood sheet prior to installation (the underside of the roof is visible from the balcony). One thing that set J&J apart from another bidder was their insistence that the tile and underlayment felt be replaced up to the peak of the roof - patches to the felt don't work. Makes sense and convinced me that they really knew their business. Also, the estimator actually got up on the roof and made measurements and took pictures - the other bidder didn't.
Description of Work: From an existing tile roof, removed a leaking skylight from a roof section (about 10'x26') over an outdoor balcony. Boarded off the resulting hole and reinstalled the tile roof with new underlayment. Furnished new tiles to make up the difference from the skylight. Found some dry rot and replaced one plywood sheet section in the course of the job, so final bill slightly higher than estimate - not unexpected and per the contract.

We had a recurrent leak near our fireplace. Two other companies recommended replacing the entire roof. The J&J representative showed me that most of the roof was actually still in good repair; the problem was flashing around the chimney, although he noted that the ridgecaps were pretty worn (something our home inspector had noted a few years earlier). The repairs were made in a few hours and the roof's held up nicely ever since.

Thank you very much for your report. Not all roofers are willing to do repairs and only want to re-roof. They will be happy to "bid your repair" but will only supply a re-roof quote. I can comfortably say the majority of roofers are honest of intent, but it helps to be aware that some few will insist you "need to re-roof" when in fact you do not. Some few may also not have the expertise to analyze the repair solution and will feel they can only safely offer a re-roof quote. Web sites like Angie's List are extremely helpful in this regard, due to the valuable feedback of homeowners such as yourself resulting in connecting up with contractors who have your best interests in mind and the expertise to accomplish these intentions.

They gave us both a repair estimate and a replacement estimate while we were deciding whether to try to repair or replace a four year old roof. We opted for a complete re-roofing. Their estimate was the most expensive, but we chose them because their proposal was the most comprehensive and covered all the issues that had cause the leaks. They came when promised, and let us know the problems they encountered along the way. The leaking stopped immediately (our old roof leaked even during the summer with HVAC condensation). The true test will be the first rain storm, but we're pretty confident. They left my yard/property cleaner than it was when they arrived. They were quiet and courteous.
Description of Work: Ripped off two layers of roof, one less than four year old, but leaked like a sieve, and installed new roof, and cap under HVAC unit.

Basically what I told you above, but in greater detail, they showed up right on time, spent several hours inspecting my torch down roof, gave thoughtful and thorough recommendations but at the same time told me that none of it was necessary to spend any money on it, that the work was more then likely 5-7 years away, and to save my money for my new house. I can't tell you how much this meant to me. They are a great company in a sea of roofers that are looking for a fast buck, and I will use them in my new home.
Description of Work: I called these guys based on the high rating here on Angie's List, to give me a second opinion on an inspection that my buyers had done, and they came out and gave my roof a thorough examination and had a list of recommendations, but told me it wasn't really necessary as the roof had so much life left in it, that it should wait 5 years or so if the new buyers wanted to move forward with it. I really appreciated the candid honesty, they could have gotten some quick work out of me but chose to make me a customer for life and with my new home.
