I would give them A's over everything. They kept following up on it. I made some changes because I wanted them to tear it all the way down to the base wood, the base roof, and also they put an exhaust fan in there that I wanted. I made those changes really quick and they got the job done really fast, I'd say four or five days. It took them four days to finish that. The only difficult thing was since the house is in Monterey Park, the City has really a lot tighter and probably over permit requirements. So if there's any delays or things that kind of messed things up, it was the City's fault and not J & J Roofing.

Overall, I would give them excellent - A. This was my Montebello house. They were on time, they had a crew of about five or six people and so they tried to get that done as fast as they could. When they finished every day, they cleaned up really nicely. The other thing is, I guess the lead worker, the supervisor that was leading the group, he had me come up on the roof because what happened - one of the vent pipes from their patching up all the different holes and stuff - that vent pipe, when he was fixing the vent pipe that went all the way through the house, down to the bottom of the house, I guess it was between the studs. So he asked me hey, does this go to the upstairs bathroom and I told him yes. I said that's probably from way back when I put copper tubing in. The copper tubing company probably just cut that vent pipe and put a new vent pipe in. Most people probably wouldn't even tell me about it, they'd just let me go and just cover it up. Then I answered him hey, that's why I got you guys - because you're not only on Angie's List but a bunch of other lists and they're always rated getting a super service award. That's what I always look for. He told me that their boss, the boss that runs the company, told them treat each house like you're working on your mother's house. And so they let me know everything that's going on even though it may not be stuff that other vendors or companies just wouldn't even mention. I can't even think of any improvement. They've all been excellent; I have no complaints. Give them A's on everything.
Description of Work: I have a tile roof, so they had to remove all the tile and put a new double layer of insulation on, and then they had to put the tile back in and replace any broken tile.

It was March 2015 before it rained again. And Holy Cow, not only was the original leak still there, but now there was water dripping rapidly from several places across the ceiling (including a trail through the electric box and down the chandelier) and water streaming down the wall opposite the original leak and and around the corner down a wall in the living room. I was frantic. I checked my receipt and the repair was under warranty for one more month. It took some time (a week or two as I recall) for J&J to get someone out to evaluate the problem. The man who came was elderly and quite overweight. He had to pause on the landing in order to make it up the stairs from the street to my front door--not a good sign when he will be climbing a ladder onto my roof. I let him use my extension ladder because I didn't think he could carry his up my stairs. My house is built into a hill, and there is only one place flat enough to set the ladder and have the proper angle--not too steep, nor too flat. He insisted the ladder be set up where it had to be at a very steep angle. Then he climbed the ladder very slowly. He was shaking so badly I thought he would fall off. When he got to the top, he tried to get his left foot over the parapet. After trying 4-5 times with his left foot, he switched to his right foot and eventually got it around the ladder and over the parapet. He then spent 15-20 minutes walking my roof. When he returned to the ladder to get down, he took one look and said he didn't think he could get down because of the steep angle. Gosh, really? So I moved the ladder to the spot I originally suggested, where it could be set at the appropriate angle. Once we returned inside, he explained that the problem had nothing to do with J&J?s work, which he described as perfect with the gesture of kissing his fingertips and pulling his fingers away from his mouth. He then explained that he could tell from looking at where the leak was in the dining room ceiling that the leak was unrelated to where J&J had made the repair. Seriously? I still don?t know if he was incompetent or just thought he could put one over on me. I called J&J and said I needed someone else to come out and look at the roof. It took about a week for the owner to get back to me. And then he sounded irritated with me, but did agree to come out himself. He was great when he arrived. And after walking the roof himself, said the problem was definitely the repair. For some reason the repair left about two inches open between the repair and the original roof. At that point he mentioned he had fired the entire team that had done the repair because of problems with their work. And he hired the man who came to evaluate the repair because he was a friend who needed work. But he did send a guy to fix the repair, and for $50 had them fix three minor, unrelated issues on the roof. I?m not sure why I didn?t ask him about repairing the additional damage to my dining and living rooms. So the next time it rained hard, December 2015, I discover the original leak is still there!!! In all fairness, when the owner was looking at the repair, he mentioned that if the leak continued, there is another portion of the roof that might be the culprit. But I don?t think I'll be calling J&J again, because I don?t have any confidence that they will send a competent team.
Description of Work: In April 2014, I had J & J repair a roof leak that had ruined the plaster on one wall (and a bit of ceiling adjoining that wall) in my dining room. It's a flat roof. They replaced a section down to and including the plywood base.

We apologize for this experience. You summarized the error very clearly and to the best of our knowledge, that is exactly what happened, I'm not going to refute it at all. You called during what has been the busiest time we have experienced in our over 20 years in business (even in my over 40 years in the industry), so I regret the delays in getting back to you. Right after the date you interacted with Rick, we found out from another customer that he was having difficulty and we asked him to seek medical help and we took him off doing this. We kept him in an apartment by us and conducted wellness checks on him twice a day, but unfortunately the problem's Rick was having was due to a terminal illness. He was (seemingly) strong and healthy only a couple months before he saw you, so it was a surprise to him initially and he thought it would pass. Rick has been succeeded by Rob Davis, a veteran contractor with over 40 years of experience in analyzing roofs. We would like to offer you a free roof check-up service to make up for the serious lapses in service you received, there is no excuse for that. Please call my son Mike at 323 913 4190 if you would like us to do this (even on another property if you wish).

A great experience! The roofers showed up on time everyday and worked diligently. Each day the property was cleaned thoroughly, even rolling a giant magnet through the garden to pick up nails. Because the vintage tile was reused, the work was difficult and very detail oriented; like putting together a puzzle. The roof looks beautiful. Everyone was very accommodating and friendly. One small area that I thought needed some special attention was re-done beautifully and without question. I highly recommend J&J Roofing.

Provider was a bit late but he had called earlier explaining he'd be late, so this wasn't a big deal. Work seemed fine based on what provider told me he did. I didn't go up on the roof and no pictures provided, but as noted, I went by what the provider said, who seemed experienced. The poor aspect was that they were supposed to give me an estimate for a follow-up seal job. I spoke to them on the phone three times to give them two different email addresses, to send me the estimate. I never got the estimate; I checked my spam filters for both email addresses. I also emailed them through their website explaining how I hadn't gotten the estimate notwithstanding prior communications. I got no response to that. I guess there could be some technical / email glitch, but as noted, I gave them two different email addresses and I checked my spam folders and got nothing and spoke to them several times. They could have at least mailed me a hard copy of the estimate based on my last communication with them that I hadn't received their estimate.

Regardless of why this happened, this is not okay and on behalf of the company I apologize. I do know at that time we were being buried with in excess of 300 estimate requests per day, and we had just lost a life-long friend and business partner to a terminal illness (and we were his executor and administratively to make a long story short, it was a mess that further buried us). I can offer you a free roof check-up and a guarantee that my son Mike will get you any follow up bid (if necessary) within 48 hours (business days) if you like. Call us at 323 913 4910

I bought a big deal for this service and it turned out okay. I thought the person who did the work was pretty knowledgeable of the roofing business. The person kind of explained to me the problem areas on my roof in terms of being able to show me what is going on with the roof including what needs to be watched and what needs to be repaired. I thought it was overpriced for what they actually did. For the $99 that I paid there was very little actual work done in terms of materials used and work done. I would probably look at other companies first before I used this company again.

Made an appointment for 2:00 PM and the technician called and came early which was nice. I told him my concerns because I have a flat roof and he went right up to check it. He examined the whole roof and sealed anything that might cause a leak. He took before and after pictures which was great since I can't climb on the roof to see and have to take his word for it. He was done in about a half hour and told me my roof should probably last for another five years since it was replaced 15 years ago. He was very professional and pleasant and put my mind at ease. When the time comes for a new roof I'll most likely call J&J Roofing first.

I cannot remember the precise date or what I ended up paying (around $2800--I can look up the details if you need them plus the receipts), but it was at the end of summer 2014. I've no doubt J & J knows roofing, but bottom line is, theses people are CROOKS when they decide to be!! On a small job like mine ($4200 total before I fired them) and with someone they thought didn't know any better (a single woman), the problems were legion. Worst was the replacement of the facia board, or attempted replacement, since that's when I fired them. Instead of bringing clean, prepared facia boards to the work site that would run the 20' lengths, they brought old, warped douglas fir (a termite's choice diet) that looked like it had been torn off other sites, and in 10' runs that would have to be poorly attached. My contractor commented that they looked like they'd been taken from a dump! Later the owner claimed that the correct facia was unavailable at any lumber yard in the metropolis of Los Angeles, which of course was a lie as I easily discovered. In addition, with several weeks to wait before my scheduled date (J & J being so popular!), they could have ordered the proper boards. Prior to the facia board incident, J & J had torn off the old roof plus nailed down new (I hope!) plywood, but when the facia incident happened, I lost all trust in them. I paid for the work completed and my contractor finished up with the torch down, but now it cost more since bringing on a new company often does. To top it off, after our recent season of rains, I've discovered pooling on the roof, a result of improperly leveled plywood. I am really disappointed that you people at Angie's List have recommended J&J. Be careful, folks. The biggest company with the best reviews is not always the place to go.
Description of Work: Scheduled for tear down, new roof, and replacement of facia board on a small garage apartment, but I had to fire them & just pay for part because of the terrible and unethical work (see below).

They didn't call us back at first. It took us two months to get someone over here. When they finally did come out they gave me an estimate on my roof that was ludicrous. We have 15 broken tiles on the roof and they wanted to charge $4500 for that. We recently had parts of our house re-roofed and tiles replaced for a total of $1500.00. I won't be using J&J Roofing in the future. I felt the $99 was a complete waste. I work in real estate. I felt it was unethical. A whole new roof would be $20000 and for them to want a 1/4 of that to do 15 tiles, that was ludicrous. I would suggest anyone consider someone else. I felt it was a scam.

Day 1 - The Tear-off crew arrived on time and began immediately. It was discovered that main roof section had 5 layers of existing roofing material. The crew worked a bit later than expected in order to complete the tear-off in one day rather than needing to return. Day 2 -The Solar company installed approx. 60 stand-offs for the Solar Panels. Days 3 & 4 - The roofing company returned to install the new roof. The foreman said he brought a large crew to make sure they finished before the end of the week as rain was in the forecast. This included sealing around all the stand-offs installed by the Solar Company. Day 5 - two man crew returned to finish re-tiling the side of the turret and complete any other work. Day 5 Evening (Halloween) - Rained like heck and no leaks!! Overall the work went very smoothly. The job site was always neat and tidy. The finished work was of high quality.
Description of Work: Complete Tear-off of existing flat roof and full replacement, including replacement of coping tile and re-tiling back of turret adjacent to the flat roof for tie-in. . The roof replacement was in preparation for installation of Solar Panels. I had quotes from three contractors. While J&J was slightly higher, their explanation of the work in their quote and a recommendation from a friend led me to select them for the work.

We purchased an initial $99 roof inspection because of a leak in our roof. The leak caused water to drip on a small portion of our hardwood floors in the living room. After the inspection they suggested a repair of $375. It took a tremendous of effort to schedule this repair - we had to contact the owner 3 times to have someone from the company call us to schedule the repair. After the repair, our roof still leaked and caused further damage to our hardwood floors. When we contacted them about the leak still not being fixed they did not come out to our house for another 2 weeks. When the repairman came out he said he found the problem and that he was surprised he did not see the issue previously remember that he had been out twice before. I assumed the repair would take some time and effort but he used a caulking gun and it took 15 minutes. There were just a few small areas about the thickness of a nail file with caulk but no other visible signs of a repair. When we sent an email to the roofing company owner about our concerns (why was it missed twice before, the fact that the repair seemed quick and not thorough, etc) he sent us a polite reply but nothing that addressed our concerns: - he stated that the sunlight at that time of day and the viewing angle factored into them not catching the issue in the first place. This does sound acceptable to me because they found the problem in a few minutes and I would hope they can compensate for angle and light being a factor. - if he would have known what he knows today he would have not suggested a repair but would have suggested a replacement to that portion of the roof. They knew about the leak since the first time they came out and suggested a repair without this every coming out. The net result is now we have to contact another company after spending a total of $475 and 3 months.
