This was an excellent experience. I had found 3 roofers here on the List because I was considering having the whole roof redone. My house has 2 roofs, basically: the primary roof is a standard composite roof. It covers about 80% of the square footage of the house and has an attic underneath it. There is a rear room that was a circa 1980 add-on, however, that has a flat roof with no attic and no insulation of any kind. (The ceiling underneath the flat roof is open beam.) This room got incredibly warm in the summer because the sun hit that flat roof and heated the ceiling to the point that it was very warm to the touch. This flat roof issue has always been the top priority for me. I got 3 estimates on doing both roofs. But as I did that, it became more apparent to me that the primary roof, which has 3 layers and no visible leaks, will probably last me for awhile yet. So I asked the 3 roofers to give me a quotation for just the flat roof. (They had all given me quotations for the flat roof as part of the big project, but I knew it would be a bit more cost to do this as a stand alone.) J&J, who had impressed me anyway during the initial estimate process, as had another roofer, gave me a bid that was the lowest, so I went with them. On Thursday I signed a contract. On Friday morning I talked to their scheduler. Work started that afternoon. The first coat went on Friday, the second on Monday. By Saturday (with only one coat of elastomeric surface on) I was amazed at the difference. The ceiling was taking on little to no heat... it was literally a night and day difference. (I had no idea this elastomeric stuff was so much better than the neoprene that was on there.) Needless to say I was delighted. Best money I've ever spent on my house. Great job guys.
Description of Work: Clean and resurface flat roof with a white elastomeric surface.

I had a very helpful conversation with Matt on the phone who was thorough, helpful and honest about what they did and didn't do regarding skylights. He then gave me the number of another Angie's List guy who he highly recommend for full skylights as opposed to solar-tubes. Ed came out to inspect our roof. He took his time walking around, touching it and finally said, "You've probably got another 2-3 years left on this roof. It doesn't need doing right now unless you really want to." It was so nice to have a someone just be honest rather than trying to make a buck. I know nothing about these things and to have Ed not lie to me means I will undoubtedly use them when I do need the new roof. Although there was never a quote given for the roof, if they did come in a little higher (which they may not,) honesty to me is worth a little extra. I will call these guys again and recommend friends give them a chance to bid on work.

I had estimates from more than one roofer that seemed very competent and quality-oriented. J& J was not the least expensive bid but I went with J&J because they submitted a very detailed contract with all the work/materials spelled out clearly. I also found John Glass a pleasure to deal with when I spoke to him about our needs. He took the time to work with me to find shingles that would match the roof on our house even though the house shingles had been discontinued. The roofing went off without a hitch, on time and at the price specified. The workers cleaned up beautifully. We were very pleased and would definitely refer this company to others.

Fast response to request for estimate. Scheduled timely repair work on a schedule that I could agree to. Performed the job safely and in an appropriate period of time with appropriate number of roofers (2). Since the job did not take as long as the original estimate, J&J actually sent me a new invoice two days after the job was done and reduced the amount due from what was agreed in the estimate. I would use J&J again.
Description of Work: Wind had blown spanish tiles off a porch overhang due to poor installation by a different roofer several years ago. J&J was asked to inspect the roof and replace tiles as necessary and ensure they were properly installed.

Thank you Member! Our motto is Honest Estimates, Quality Workmanship. We are fairly unique in that we are contractors in Southern California who actually lower their bill at the end of the job. Some jobs have to have an estimate (ironically, typically the very small jobs) and in such cases where we estimated a bit high, we invariably come down in our final price. I'd say 97% of our work is done on a set contract but in the rare cases where we have to work off an estimate, as you noticed I set a "limit" where the price would NOT go higher even if it meant I had to absorb some cost. You have a great week!

The estimater showed up ON-TIME, was very professional, thorough, and pleasant. He seemed very knowledgeable and actually went up on the roof to examine the job (unlike another roofer gave me a verbal estiimate without even bringing a ladder along to inspect the roof). Within a reasonable amount of time they emailed me a complete, thorough written estimate. I was VERY impressed with the professionalism, but thought the price was a bit high. I totally disregarded the other roofer's estimate since he didn't actually inspect the job. Now 6 months later I am collecting comparative estimates to TRY and find someone who can do the job without breaking the bank before rainy season again. ESTIMATE was $10,800. I only paid $7k for my home, but it was 8 years ago and maybe prices are much higher now. My home roof has several different pitches, so I thought the 4-units, with only 1 pitch would be cheaper. Nevertheless, I was very impressed and I guess you get what you pay for because I truly believe that if I do decide to use them (depending on other estimates), I believe that if their work match their professionalism so far, they will do an outstanding job.
Description of Work: I called during a rain storm because a tenant reported to me that she had a leak in her living room of a 4-unit building. Owner, Matt Glass, told me right away that they were very busy and couldn't schedule me until the next week, which I understood, due to the rain.

During the heavy rains in February 2010, the house experienced roof leaks in two areas of tiled roof. I called J & J Roofing for an estimate. Ed recommended reroofing the entire area, measuring approximately 9-feet by 20-feet, work I was expecting would be the best way to mitigate future leaks. The estimate arrived in good time, the proposed work was what Ed and I discussed, and the price was acceptable. Before signing the contract, I had several questions, all of which were answered completely, professionally, and satisfactorily by J & J's Rick Harder. The work was completed more quickly than I anticipated. The tile work was beautifully done. Installation of the drip edge was much less so. I spoke with Mr. Harder about it and provided him with pictures of the area where I thought the work looked less than "finished." He arranged for a two-man crew to re-do the drip edge in the area about which I was concerned. The crew was at the house within a few days and worked diligently to work on the metal edge. It turned out perfectly.
Description of Work: J & J Roofing furnished all labor, equipment, matls., scaffolding, sales taxes, hoisting, transportation, supervision, coordination, and storage to complete in good and workmanlike manner the following work: 1) Take up all existing tile and set aside. Remove all mortar joints. 2) Install a two-ply modified torchdown roofing system with a 28-lb base sheet nailed to the wood deck and a smooth (non-granulated) modified torchdown membrane torched in place. All end and side laps fully sealed, using only Dibiten torch. 3) Install charcoal color metal drip edge at perimeter of roof. 4) Reinstall all the tile, replacing all broken tile with whole, new US Tile. All pan (bottom) tiles individually installed in place using compatible roofing mastic and tops will be mortared to replicate existing look. All rake tile will be renailed. New solid mortar joints installed at any ridge or vertical wall locations. 5) Clean up and haul away all roofing debris. Leave work area as clean as possible when work is completed.

My roof had been repaired (different roofer) a few years ago at the line where an extension had been done to the house (many years prior). But the bedroom had a leak in the same area so I assumed the repair hadn't been successful. I was wrong. The roofer came out and spent a lot of time on my very small house and said it was around the air conditioner unit which had been worked on in the past year so that made perfect sense. It was a small job for them but they came (with pictures and instructions) and fixed it in no time. It's the middle of summer so I don't know for sure if they were successful, but they stand by their work so we'll see in the winter.

Thank you for your report. Repair attempts are usually successful and we offer repairs-only proposals to many clients when we feel they are in their best interests. Once in a while further work is needed to resolve an issue that turns out to require additional work. In such a case we always take into account what the customer hired us to do before when pricing the new proposal. While we believe you will stay warm and dry during the next rain storm, we also commit to being there for our clients if they ever need us again, a policy we have maintained for over eighteen years in the Greater Los Angeles area.

The company was good to their word and promptly repaid me for the cost of replacing the window and the screen. However, their estimate was almost twice as a high as another Angie's List top roofing provider, so I did not use J&J to complete the roofing repair. I did appreciate their honesty, however, even if their prices are not competitive.

Ed was the estimator. He was punctual, thorough, professional, and friendly. The estimate arrived promptly via e-mail. J & J followed up by telephone. Overall, this was an excellent experience, and I would recommend J & J to others based on my contact with the company. I did not contract with J & J. Its estimate was the middle-cost estimate and was not unreasonable; however, I contracted with the company whose estimate was the lowest of the three I obtained.

Thank you for the report! It seems that on some projects we average the lower bid, some we're the middle bid, or at least on the feedback I've gotten over the years we've been on Angie's, that seems to be how it goes. Different roofers have different crews with different experience and of course the more experienced roofers cost more, which can be a factor. The only caution we give on this is when one contractor comes in extremely low on their bid, where the phrase "too good to be true" comes to mind (e.g. when the bid is right around the price of adequate materials alone).

Thank you for your kind words. Our approach in this regard is deliberate: it's better business over many years to help people and then they refer us business or prefer to use us down the road. John did the original bid, but then it took a few calls to get someone out to do the actual work. Blake then came out to do the work, but I noticed after he left that he missed a few spots I had discussed with John. I called to ask him to come out again, but he didn't return my calls. I finally reached him on his cell, and he said he'd come out to complete the work, but he never did. I called him again a few times before the first big storm, but never heard back, and I still have not received a phone call back. Unfortunately, I think it is because I paid them immediately after the initial visit, before the job was completed. I'm very disappointed, because it did start out quite well, and I do plan to re-surface my roof in 1 month. Had it worked out, I would have probably given them that job.

We did a repair job for her. She wanted Blake to come out and look at it to make sure it was done right. Blake did come out and met her at the job site and he verified that the work was done right. This was an extra trip for us which we did not complain about and did in the interests of setting her mind at ease about the work done. She pointed out a section of the roof that she says John (the owner of J&J Roofing) said we would do. The owner maintains we did not verbally indicate any promise to do that section (and this was not on the contract that she signed). But no problem, our supervisor said he would send someone by to seal in that area; we did follow up and send a worker to do that for her for no extra charge. Her report is that she called three to four times, one to John’s line, two the main office line and one on Blake’s line. John and Blake clear their messages daily and did not get calls from her that they are aware of. Blake did speak to her on his cell phone and promised to send someone out before the next rains, which we did, again another trip for free in the interests of putting service over profit. This job had already crossed over into "out of pocket" for us at this point, which we made no mention or complaint of. In her dealings with us see seemed satisfied with our assistance. We are not sure why she maintains that no one returned her phone calls, or that her friend did a patch before the major rains, since we are the ones who did that extra work for free. If she wants to call the owner on his direct line, John Glass can be reached at 323 913 4194.

Over the last four weeks we have been averaging well over 150 incoming calls per day. While this is normal during rain storms, at the same time, we cannot triple the size of our company overnight (leaving 2/3 rds of the place underemployed for the rest of the year). It is regrettable that we cannot get to everyone as fast as they would like. When you think about it, if we only could get to everyone, we'd get more work. So it makes no sense that we would deliberately slight someone. Your report suggests a degree of ire toward us, in response to which I can only say that you failing to get a return call was not only regrettable, it was not personal. We continue to try to refine how we handle the avalanche of calls during heavy storm times. We receive leads from a huge number of websites but usually look out for Angie's List customers since they have been a great way to meet new customers. We hope you did locate a roofer who could help you and again, sorry you took it so personally, the failure to return your call in a timely manner was not an insult aimed at you. We really do like people who call us asking for help.

We had a leaky garage roof. First roofing company we called told us we needed an entire new roof and the cost would be $3,000, plus whatever it cost to remove the solar pool water heater that is on the roof (something they would not do.) I checked Angie's List, found J & J and called them. Their estimator came over and said we did not need a new room, just an under $300 repair. We had the work done (it took all of 90 minutes to do it) and the following week we had record rainfall. Not a drop in the garage!!!!! We saved thousands!

Thank you for this report! We often prefer attempting to repair to save home owners money. Repairs do not always handle a problem due to the fact that sometimes there are problems under the roofing surface that cannot be seen without ripping the roof off. But our inspectors are trained to see if there is a good chance of a comparatively inexpensive repair solving the problem for the home owner. We usually try to look at how a repair amortizes as compared to a re-roof and if it makes more sense economically for the customer to repair, we offer that option. We're glad this worked out very well for you!

I contacted J&J because of the reports I had read on Angie's list. I selected them because they had the only reports that discussed laying plastic over the attic insulation before the tear-off as an available service. They came within two days to measure the roof. Photographs were taken of the existing conditions. A proposal was prepared at their office and delivered by e-mail a few days later. Their price was lower than others, and they broke out the garage price separately as I had requested. Plastic for the attic, radiant surfaced plywood and adding attic ventilation were additional options that could be selected. I advised Matt Glass, the owner/manager (?) that they had the job. Over the following two weeks we exchanged numerous e-mails to settle many of the details. I had lots of questions about everything from type of valley construction to effectiveness of the additional radiant layer on the plywood to whether solar ventilation was appropriate where trees shield the afternoon sun. Matt was helpful and instructive during this time. I appreciated his patience and availability. It was like having an extended conversation with a favorite college professor. As to roof color, once I had made a tentative decision, Matt gave me a local address to visit that had the very same roof. (I did, ultimately, select the radiant layer and solar fan.) The job was scheduled to begin in ten days, on Monday 11/16/09. The roof tear-off was sub-contracted to a company who specializes in that service. It took one day for five men. They also removed two old TV aerials. When they left the property was as clean as it was when they had arrived at 7AM. Tuesday was plywood day. The building permit was obtained and delivered by J&J. Five men on the job. They stripped off the gutters and installed all of the plywood surfaces. They were efficient and cleaned up thoroughly at the end of the day. The only real surprise appeared after the gutters were removed. The original construction of the boxed in eaves from 1938 did not provide full height fascia boards. There was originally a molding that had been stripped off to install gutters. The gutters were hiding a 2" gap where we expected a solid fascia board. The roof installation crew came a day early-- Wednesday morning-- to remove the old fascia and install a new 5" high fascia board around the entire house. Most of the wood available locally and purchased was pre-primed. About 80' needed to be primed by J&J here before installation. The plywood was inspected by the city. The roofing materials were delivered and loaded onto the roof. By the end of Wednesday, the roofs were covered with roofing felt. Again, the entire property was cleaned up thoroughly. Thursday was roofing, installed by a seven man crew again led by Eric. The ventilation items--fan and vents--, were then installed and a final clean-up completed. They were gone by about 3PM. I will mention here that I am a California licensed architect who now works in the entertainment field. In my opinion, J&J brings exceptional craftsmanship and professionalism to the job. The fascia carpenters especially followed the most recommended practices for that work. Also, there was an instance where I was concerned about alignment of the bottom edge of the fascia. They removed and reworked a problem caused by settling of the foundation with no hesitation. In summation, what a wonderful experience for a property owner!
Description of Work: We are required by the city (Burbank) to totally replace roofs that were originally wood shingles. The current ordinances require a plywood roof properly installed under a new roof. J&J contracted to provide all material and labor for the job, from tear-off to installation of a new roof and new attic ventilation.

We have had excellent work and outstanding service from the company over the past several years. In this instance we discovered two serious leaks during the first major rainstorm of 2007 and placed a call to Rick Harder at J & J. Even though the company was extremely busy with other calls after the storm, Rick called back promptly and came right out to inspect the damage. As always he was very efficient and a crew arrived a few days later and repaired the two serious leaks. The work was reasonably priced and the quality first rate as the leaks were completely fixed. This wasn't the first time that J & J and Rick responded quickly to our call when we really needed help with an emergency leak situation. Two years prior in 2005 Rick found a leak that other roofers had been unable to correct for years, and it has not leaked since. Again, the service was efficient and the price reasonable. We heartily recommend J & J to anyone - we see they are an Angie's List Super Service Award winner for 2008 and they definitely should be - they are consistently excellent!
Description of Work: Repaired two portions of our roof which was leaking after a storm. Took up existing a portion of the tile roofing in the front and reinstalled the tiles with new underlayment. Investigated and repaired leaks in flat sheet metal roof in the rear of the house.

They tore off an old shingle roof and put on an asphalt roof. The work went on well, but it was more expensive than they first estimated. They were very good, but the only negative thing about them was their price. I would use their services in the future, if need be.
Description of Work: We used the services of J & J Roofing in September of 2008 to replace a roof.

Thank you for your report. I remember your particular job and rarely after tear off, extensive deck damage or sheet metal damage does exist that was not visible without tearing off the existing roofing. More commonly, there is a minor amount. Yours was a lot. Being the roofer who uncovers it during tear off, we sometimes end up bearing the brunt of the unhappiness over this, so that is why we scale our pricing on these things to barely cover the material and labor costs. Believe me, we don't like surprises any more than you do! Small consolation, your wood deck and sheet metal features are going to serve you well for decades to come, now that the dryrot and rusted out portions have been replaced. I appreciate all of your kind words about your experience with us, and while you probably now won't ever need us again for that roof, if you should ever need us for anything give us a call.

Ed came out and provided us an estimate, which was within ten dollars of another estimate we received. But as we looked at the estimates, we realized that J &J had bid to both repair the leak in our roof and re-roof the offending section. The other estimate had only covered the cost of fixing the leak, and had mentioned that the entire section would need to be re-roofed "soon." At that point, there was no question of who we were going to go with. It took a couple of weeks to schedule the actual work, but thankfully we didn't have any rain during that time. Apparently the company had been swamped with work -- which we took as a good sign. Once the job was scheduled, however, they came out promptly and performed the work in only a few hours. We had significant rainfall a few weeks afterward, and can report that J & J resolved all the problems that were up there on the roof. No water anywhere but outside.
Description of Work: We have a flat section of our roof that needed repairing because it was leaking through and had ruined the existing kitchen ceiling. They fixed the leak and re-roofed the entire flat section.

Thank you for your kind report, we appreciate it! Yep, we most definitely got an avalanche of requests for work during the rains. It's pretty wild fielding more calls in two weeks than you usually receive in four months! Let us know if you ever need any further help.

It was not the best association with them. The company referred me to one of their contractors. He came out and looked at it. Everything seemed to be fine. He stated that he would have to go through another construction firm to do a part of the job because they had to remove some of the plasters. Everything was okay with them. When his crew came out to do their part of work it was totally substandard. He did not come back to look at it and inspect it. When I saw it I called him but I could not get hold of him. I called several different numbers before he finally called back. He was reluctant to find time to come out and look at it. I was adamant about him coming back. He looked at it and he agreed with me that it should be redone. I asked if he could get back to me very soon as we were having rain in the last week. I asked him to get the crew back soon and get it repaired. After several days I called the office and he didn?t call back. Finally I told the secretary that I would not be giving a good review on Angies list. She got in touch with him and he called back within 20 minutes. He told me that my job was a low priority job because we did not have any leaks. I said it was because it wasn?t raining yet. I also told him that I was considering hiring another crew as they were not giving the priority to my contract. Within 15 minutes he called back and he said he had a crew to work on my project. They came out the next day, they did repair it properly this time but it was quite a hassle. Their price was expensive for all the hassle I had to go through. I had hired them before to replace the shingles. It was a different crew and a different contractor. He was very friendly. Based on my previous experience I used them again. They did remove the substandard materials and replaced it with the decent material. It was the difficult to get them back and complete the work. I had to actually threaten them to get them back. The first time they didn?t even complete the job. They did make it right the second time. The crew was punctual. They did show up on time. The contractor wasn?t professional. I would not use them again. They were not responsive and it was a lot of unneeded stress for me.
Description of Work: I contracted J & J Roofing to repair a leak along the joint between the add-on room and the main part of the house.

Thank you for your report. Part of this situation was due to the customer service guys (myself and Julie) getting overwhelmed with hundreds of calls due to the rains that had just hit at the time. That doesn't excuse the fact that his call was not identified correctly as to priority. This is something we are continuing to work on (getting all incoming calls sorted out during a rain crush) and we will strive to do better. The vast majority of our existing clients who call get a prompt return call and service and we certainly don't like it that this did not occur in this case. The specific work that was incorrect was done by one individual. He was made to re-study and certify on that portion of his Master Shingle Installer certification. There was also one minor step that was omitted (a couple ridge caps replaced) and this error in communication was addressed on both the estimator and the foreman. The owner of J&J Roofing reviewed the estimator's handling of this and advised him on how he could have handled this differently. Specifically the point about determining that it wasn't going to leak anyway being insufficient if you put yourself in the shoes of someone who is concerned about their roof being 100% intact. While it might have been true that the existing work would not leak, the owner understands that such a response is small comfort at best (and it is our policy that correction requests from clients are THE highest priority, another point that was gone over with this estimator). We appreciate that the client did state that we fixed the problem. We are proud of our work and we don't let go of something until it is resolved. As to pricing, many of our Angie's List client chose us due to our price being competitive. You will never find a consistently good contractor who will guarantee that their bid is always going to be the lowest price and we never claim to guarantee that our price will be the best. I understand that the client's issue with the price is the amount of stress he felt about it and I won't put a dollar amount on something that subjective. I will say we strive to not cause clients stress and the vast majority of the time we succeed. When we do not succeed, we take it seriously and take steps to avoid situations that cause any stress or upset. Again I appreciate the report and we are glad that the job did ultimately end up being roofing work that met his expectations, even if the experience as a whole did not.

I have a flat roof which needed replacing because it leaked in a few spots. I had about 5-7 bids on the job. J and J was one of the cheapest. I selected them because their bid was very competitive and they have an excellent reputation on Angie's list. I got to say, this was one of the best contractor experiences I have ever had. They got me the bid quickly, by email, no pressure whatsoever (which I hate). They were very flexible as to when they could redo the roof. We agreed on a date, they came out on time, every day (took 3 days), did the work, cleaned up, and got the job done on schedule. We just had our first big rain, and the leaks are gone. Everyone at J and J is extremely polite and professional and accomodating. The roof looks great, they have an excellent warranty. Bottom line: my experience with them was perfection! I would say a lot more complementary things (like, you'd have to be a fool to go with anyone else!), but I don't want people to think I'm a shill for the company (which I am not). But seriously, this is one great company!
Description of Work: Tore off old roof and hauled away, replaced with new torch-down roof.
