THEY SEEMED TO DO A GOOD JOB OF WHAT THEY DID. THE LEAD PLUMBER WAS WAY TOO POLITE MAKING ME LEARY.
Description of Work: THEY PUT IN A WATER LINE BEHIND OUR REFRIDGERATOR SO WE COULD GET ICE AND WATER IN OUR NEW REFRIDGEATOR. THEY WENT THROUGH THE GARAGE. IT FELT LIKE THEY CHARGED US WAY TOO MUCH. THEY DID NOT MAKE THE PLUMBING PIECE BEHIND THE FRIDGE FLUSH WIT THE WALL. PIECE STICKS OUT FROM THE WALL.

We should have offered options for installing a recessed box behind the fridge so that the valve would not be sticking out. We failed you miserably. We do offer a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and I'm hoping that we can alter your opinions. (We've offered to re-do the job to their complete satisfaction at no additional cost.) We are all human and make mistakes, what separates us from our competition is our willingness to mend those mistakes. Thank you for sharing our failures with us so that we can make ourselves better.

The shut off valve was leaking so he put a new one in. I though the charge was expensive. He was very professional. He accepted a credit card which was nice. I was very happy with the service, I just didn't think the price fit the job.

These guys were the gold standard in plumbing. They showed up at the scheduled time, they were clean and neat, and they even put booties on their shoes. They explained everything in detail and replaced the facucet in that time they said. They did flawless work and left the area clean. My only problem is that they're not cheap. I supplied my own faucet and it still cost me $363. They offer Angie's list people a 10% discount, but there is a $39 service call, which I mistakenly thought would be waiived if I had them do the work. I asked them to waiive it, but they would not.

Thank you for the detailed report. We are proud to be considered the "gold standard in plumbing." Unfortunately running a plumbing company correctly so that we are still in business in the future to stand behind our industry-leading warranties requires that we be priced correctly. There are many "Bubba's" out there that can offer service at a lower rate but will be gone tomorrow. We've been around since 1969 and owe it to our customers to be here another 40 years. I hope that sheds some light on our rates. Thank you again for allowing us to service your needs.

David (a young plumber) and Ray (his apprentice) arrived on time, cheery, clean and professional looking. Even before going inside the house, David was trying to sell me on a whole house repipe. Although I was curious about the price of a repipe, it's not in my budget for now, and I told him so. David informed me that the 10% Angie's List discount would be applied to the cost of the inspection, but that it is a first-time customer discount only, so it would not be applied to any subseequent work done. He suggested their maintenance program (I forget what it is called), which offers a 15% discount on work done, and I did express an interest in that. The two of them did a thorough inspection of the plumbing in the house, with Ray taking notes and running for supplies as David tested the various fixtures. As they went along, I noted various items I would not be interested in or would be doing myself (e.g. I did not want water filter cartridges changed, and I would be replacing the garbage disposal myself). David indicated that the water heater in the basement should be replaced, and started to mention the different levels of installation service they have and which one he recommended, and that we could probably save on the price by draining the heater ourselves. When we got to the garage, which has been illegally converted to an apartment and stinks horrifically due to squatters, I indicated that we would not likely be fixing anything in there, just wanted an assessment of what the current status was. The water heater for the garage was already known to leak, and I wanted a quote to remove it. The water to the garage was shut off, and they didn't turn it on (the shutoff is right in front of the main house shutoff), so the checking they did of the garage plumbing was with the water turned off. They noted a broken tank lid and possibly cracked tank on one toilet, and described the other toilet as "failed" without specifying what was wrong with it. David indicated he would be reviewing the results and getting prices over the weekend (the inspection was a Friday), and would e-mail me on Monday or Tuesday with estimates, and that they could work with me on certain things. I also took the weekend to gather my faculties and decide what I really wanted prices on. Our e-mails crossed early in the week. My e-mail included a request for printed materials such as the brochures he had with him for repipe and for the maintenance program, and information about the various levels of water heater installation. The quote I received included a repipe of the house for $6800 (which I think is pretty cheap - it's virtually identical to a similar quote I got in Oakland 3 years ago), $2300 to replace one water heater and $2000 to replace the one I wanted removed, nearly $500 to replace the garbage disposal that I plan to replace myself, $240 to replace the filter cartridges in the water filter, $1000 to replace two toilets (unspecified which ones, I assume the ones in the garage), $500 to replace a bathroom sink faucet (not sure whether it's the one with the peeling chrome that works fine, or the one that is missing the popup assembly but the drain is not a popup drain), and $1000 to change out the washing machine drain and install a trap and air admittance valve. I waited a few days for a reply to my e-mail, and never got one. Eventually, I sent another e-mail, to the reply-to address on the quote I received, narrowing down even further what I specifically wanted quoted. I received an apology, that everyone (including David) had been swamped by the heavy rains last week, and that he would send me a new quote for the specific items I listed as soon as he was able. I did receive that revised quote a few days later, and those items were high, as well. So, in summary, I got what I paid for with the inspection, but Tom Moffett's prices are too high for me to have any plumbing work done by them, and I didn't have the feeling that my needs and preferences were heard during the estimating process. .
Description of Work: Well the question says "as opposed to just an estimate", but I requested and paid for a thorough plumbing *inspection* of a short sale I am purchasing in Santa Ana, and subsequently I received a price quote based on the findings of the inspection. They did a very thorough inspection of the plumbing in the house. They did a less through job inspecting the plumbing in the garage. Due in part to the heavy rains last week, they were slow to get back to me with price quotes and answers to questions. The price quoted for a repipe was low, but they more than made up for it with the prices on everything else. I don't know if the repipe quote included supply and DWV, or just supply.

Our technician, David did perform a full-house inspection with his apprentice which lasted well over 2 hours. The quotation that she wanted e-mailed to her was sent out by 10 AM Monday morning with multiple line items for the suggested work. David did strongly recommend a repipe (just the water distribution) seeing as the existing galvanized system appeared to be in poor shape. We attempted to educate her that galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside out (where most of the damage is unseen) and that it mightn't be cost effective to repair the issues with her current system. The only slow response she received was a mistake where the e-mail was apparently sent to only her work e-mail (I was reprimanded harshly for not sending it to BOTH e-mail accounts) Admittedly, when she requested more prices for alternate options it DID take us 2 days to get the numbers to her as we were suffering from horrible rain storms that week and we were overwhelmed with storm drain stoppages, but I explained that to her immediately. I apologize for the mis-information in regards to Angie's List members and their discounts. It is not a one time discount as she was told. We offer members a 10% discount ANYTIME they mention that they are members. We do have a premier club program whereas our members can save 15% and we did offer that to her as well. As far as the less than thorough inspection on the garage, the place was a health hazard. She should have been required to have a HAZMAT team clean it up before I sent one of my tech's into that environment. There was fecal matter and used prophylactics everywhere. So I admit we didn't spend the time with the inspection that we did for the main residence. I'm truly sorry we failed to show the value that we provide. It's a little easier to prove our worth if we had gotten the opportunity to do some of the repairs though. I do hope she reconsiders. We have a 100% satisfaction guarantee and she would not have been disappointed.

Still no leaks - but they didn't fully caulk around the sink to prevent further water penetration - I had to ask for them to do that (even after they left - I noticed areas that should have been caulked); with all said and done, the amount of work done was not worth the price; I recommend looking elsewhere.
Description of Work: You will be charged $40 for them to come into your home to tell you that their services will cost 'x' amount which is based off a standard, non-negotiable price sheet; this info could have easily been quoted over the phone. What I find absurd is that they would not put that $40 against your total bill. Very, very bad business model. We still elected to use this company to complete the job because our plumbing situation was in dire need of repair. In the future I will select more carefully using a plumber with a more favorable pricing structure.

I could not have asked for a more responsive company from the moment I called to the determined effort to fix the problem the same day. The plumbers truck was equiped with all the necessary tools/equipment and supplies to complete the job when they arrived. To me the cost seemed reasonable considering the alternative of no gas in December. However, what was most impressive was the two plumbers arriving, diagnosing the problem, providing the entire cost to complete, starting and completeing the job all within about 4-5 hours. Also, a few days later I received a hand written thank you note from Rob the Tom Moffett plumber who did the job.
Description of Work: The gas company had turned off my gas service because an underground leak was detected near the foundation of my home. Tom Moffett plumbing was called. I explained the situation and they re-arranged some schedules and were at my home within several hours. The technician (Rob) gave me two estimates. One for a potential fix that day and another if the leak was on a large scale basis. Rob and his partner went to work immediately-- saw cut/jack hammer out the concrete slab near the home(about three feet by two feet) dig out the fill, expose the leaking galvanized pipe, cut out and replace corroded pipe. Then check to see if the leak had in fact stopped followed by back fill and re-patching the concrete. The job was completed well after dark. I was able to have the gas turned on by the gas company later that evening.

I was told they would send someone out, but there would be a $39 service call charge (which I agreed to pay). They came out that evening and the technician gave me an estimate of $267. I felt the estimate was much too high. He took the time to listen to my concerns, and called his supervisor. He was able to lower the price to $150. I felt that was still too high. All the prior times I had this work done, the rate was $87-$159 (by other companies). I did pay the $39 service charge to have the estimator show up, even though I did not complete the work. Eveyone I spoke with was very kind and professional, I just felt their rates were out of line.

As the member states, we did attempt to take care of his problem at a fee that he felt was reasonable for the task at hand (albeit at a far lower rate than what we typically charge) He still wasn't interested. We even offered to show him how we could permanently solve his chronic problems (which no other plumber had ever mentioned) but he was more concerned with price rather than fixing a problem correctly. We take great pride in being able to show the value of the services we provide but this client was not interested in value.

My email was answered by a timely phone call. An appointment was set up and was kept on time. The estimate of cost was thorough, perhaps more than I had hoped for, but the installation in our garage was done in good time and everything was left completely clean. The workmen were polite and professional at all times.
Description of Work: Replaced gas lines to dryer and water heater. Correctly reinstalled water heater because original installation was not legal and put in easy to operate on/off controls for water and gas. Removed pipes to no-longer-existing water softener

Our water heater was starting to fail and our usual plumber has apparently gone out of business. We contacted 2 plumbers from Angie's List. Tom Moffett Plumbing was the first to reply and schedule an appointment to provide a quote for a tank less water heater and a 50 gallon water heater. The second plumber had earlier replied by phone with a $999 quote for a 40 gallon water heater from the same manufacturer, but not necessarily the same model. The morning of the appointment our existing water heater failed. Which made the appointment for a quote timely. Tom Moffett's pricing is fixed price for common jobs, clear and they don't bargain. Tom's all inclusive price for a 40 gallon water heater is $1280 with a 10% Angie's List discount = $1152. Working from the assumption that the price differential between the two plumbers is pretty much the same across their entire product line, we decided it was worth the extra markup to get the water heater installed that day. The workmen, Will and Ken, did an excellent job. They politely tried to up sale by offering an extended warrantee and a monthly maintenance plan, we declined both. When entering my house they covered their shoes, were always polite, and put up with my jokes. The were proficient and worked hard. They made good use of the time as Ken extracted the existing water heater while Will obtained the replacement water heater. The only problem was the replacement water heater was incomplete and they both went back (2 people = carpool lane use) for a new new water heater. They arrived just before we left and completed the job while we were gone. Our neighbors locked up after them and today we took hot showers. A job well done. Overall, Tom Moffett's list price was 28% higher (15% higher after Angies List discount) than the other plumber for a 40 gallon water heater ($1280 v.s. $999) their service and work quality is high. I would use them again and push a little harder on price, recognizing it is well worth while to pay a little more for better service and a company hopefully (no problems after 1 day) willing to stand by their product.

I called to request an estimate, the technicians arrived the same day, said they could begin the work on the next day. The two technicians were on-time, very respectful of the flooring/carpeting. They asked permission prior to opening walls or accessing other areas of the house. The technicians checked and re-checked with superiors to determine best method to perform the work, they needed to remain within building code while re-routing lines. The quoted cost to perform all services needed was $1500.00

Update as of 7/22/2009: I would enthusiastically recommend Moffett Plumbing to anyone looking for an estimate for tankless water heater installation. Michael (Moffett) came out to address my concerns regarding the estimate from the previous report that came out about 2000 dollars more than the average of around 1800 from the other contractors. Michael's professionalism was very impressive and very responsive to the customer. I was really blown away in a good way by his customer friendly approach. He was not defensive at all about the earlier estimate and was willing to consider that there might had been some error on the estimators part. He took a great deal of time to review the installation by the contractor we selected. He educated me on a number of things and broke down in detail the requirements for this house. I was actually quite moved by his efforts and would consider using his services in the future. He did refund the 39 dollar fee against my wishes and insisted on treating us to dinner in Orange along with babysitter costs!!!!! Well I couldn't do the free dinner as I feel I caused them enough of a headache but just the same, it was sincere. I believe it was a combination of things including the particulars of this house, i.e. gas line in the slab, that led to the previous estimate. Things like this happen and I don't think that is standard procedure for this company. They are above board. Thanks to Michael for showing me how customer service is done well.
Description of Work: We received four estimates for the replacement of our current tank water heater with a tankless water heater. We also asked to include the costs of moving it into the attic. We received 3 estimates in the 1800 to 2000 dollar range. This company's estimate was 3800+ dollars. Additionally, we were told we should include a water softener in our home to ensure that the tankless heater doesn't clog up which would occur "within a week to three weeks". This would have been an additional 3000 dollars. This was not supported by any of the other estimators or even the manufacturer of the Noritz water heater itself. Additionally, it was suggested that we increase the size of our gas line from 1/2 to 3/4 (which is suggested by the manufacturer website). However, the manufacturer representatives at their warehouse suggested that it wouldn't be necessary given the small size of the unit we are installing. One of the reasonable estimators stated that the costs to make the gas line suitable although not necessary in this case, was minimal. This Moffett company said it would be around 3000.00 to bring in the line from the street. He missed an obvious fact that there was an existing line that was already 3/4 near the location. Finally when the representative from Moffett plumbing was asked what would it cost to install a tankless water heater supplied by this homeowner, he stated that it would be 3000.00 dollars (3800 less 800/msrp cost of heater). So the cost of their estimated labor would be 3 times that of the competitive bids. We could have signed on to pay 10,000.00 dollars for a job that only reasonably needed 2000.00 dollars. And the most irritating part of all this? They required a payment of 39 dollars to come out and do the estimate while the other companies did not require any money to do the estimate. And he was so nice in his demeanor!

Response from Tom Moffett Plumbing
Thank you for your in depth review. On the surface it appears our price was way out of line, and I don't blame you for posting a negative review and going with the cheaper bid. I feel the error lies in our hands due to the fact that we didn't spend enough time educating you about tankless technology and why the manufacturers mislead the public. In regards to treating your water supply with a softener, it is ABSOLUTELY recommended by the manufacturers. You can read this for yourself at the Noritz website under the heading "Water Quality." In regards to the gas line increase, the manufacturers aren't 100% truthful because they are attempting to increase their market share by low-balling the investment cost in a retrofit application. Unfortunately, in the real world, the smallest unit made by Noritz uses 4 times the amount of fuel per second than a tanked heater. That means by not running a new line all the way to the meter (as my technician recommended) you are actually starving the system in a situation where possibly your FAU, your clothes dryer, and your oven are all running simultaneously. Although it will work properly 50% of the time, we prefer to engineer the system correctly. In regards to the pricing, you fail to mention that we intended to install service valves on the unit so that it is easier to maintain, giving it a longer life expectancy. Those valves along with the special Cat. III stainless steel venting material and other parts means our labor was not calculated at $3000. In closing, I would like to reimburse your $39 investment and offer you a FREE evaluation of the installation and your water quality at any time. If you ever have a problem with volume of hot water or debris in your fixtures, please allow us the opportunity to investigate it at no charge to you. We appreciate your interest into our company and we'd love an opportunity to prove we are the best in the industry. Even if it's just to come back and let you know you got an amazing price on a great product and it is installed correctly. Sometimes that is the case, and we're not too proud to admit it. Thank you, Michael Moffett Vice President

James was on time and professional. He explained their prices schedule with predefined prices for 10 different forms of repair starting at $59 for a minor repair needing a washer, $117 for a flapper or removing a sink trap up to $1140 for a whole house cable. Mine was a leak underneath a toilet so a reser and reseal for $233. He explained if the flange needed work that it would be $569. I was fortunate to have a good flange. I used the 10% Angie coupon. Also note there is a $39 fee to come out and diagnose the problem. So my total bill was $272 before tax and the discount.

We were always very satisfied with their work. The plumbers that come are personable and seem to be honest. We will continue to use them as needed.
Description of Work: We use them for any plumbing work that we need done. The most important project they worked on was when another plumber messed up an outside line. They came in and rescued us from that situation, which was a pretty major job.

I was very happy with them. They were able to fix the problem correctly, unlike another company that I had come out. I felt that their prices were reasonable and they even brought out a sheet to show me what the prices broke down would be for the work that I had done. They also gave me options as to what they could do. I would use them again.
Description of Work: I had a long time plumber for many years and things started to change and not for the better. I looked for a new plumber on Angie's List and found Tom Moffett. My toilet was running and the plunger didn't work so I called him out to fix it.

They checked it for me and determined there was no leak. As they provided a free estimate, there was no cost. They were a good company to work with. If we needed work done in the future we would use them.
Description of Work: They came out to check because I thought there was a leak in the bathroom sink behind the wall.

Since everything was new, the apparatus was checked and adjusted to meet the new expectations. The "feel" of the new systems were adjusted to duplicate the feel of the old "low tech" systems, and everybody was happy.
Description of Work: This was a unusual job. I had installed two high-tech toilet system replacements in one of our down stairs and up stairs bathrooms. I thought they worked fine, but others did not think so. So, based on the Angie's List information on quality of work and proximity, I called late one day and they came early the next day.

I had a bad plumbing experience, and needed someone to fix it and do it correctly. So I looked on Angie's List and found Moffett Plumbing. I called and talked with Mike, and he explained what could be done for our specific problem. Will and Rene came out right on time, and did a splendid job fixing our plumbing. I will definitely call them again.
Description of Work: Installed a new ball valve and pressure regulator at my water main.

We have been using this plumbing company for around 20 years now. Whenever we have any plumbing problems we call them up and they make an appointment with us right away to come over and fix the problem. The prices they give us are very reasonable for plumbing work that is done in the area we live in so we are very happy about that. They never sell us expensive parts when we can get them for a lower price. Every job they do for us always lasts for a long time. The good thing about them is that we can just call them up whenever we have any questions regarding any plumbing things and they give us a quick consult on the phone on what to do or not do which is pretty great.
Description of Work: We had a leaky pipe in the garage for some time now. We needed the plumbing company to come and repair it. They only replaced a small part of the pipe to fix it and it took them a couple of hours maybe.
