Updated review (and rating upgraded) November 2012: I did not hire Tom Moffett Plumbing for the installations, taking this opportunity to teach my teen sons how to replace toilets. A great idea, but, I had never done this before . . . After years of cursing Kohler for my five year-old, low flow toilet, upon successful removal of the old toilet we ( I ) found a plastic dinasaur (now known as a Crapasaurus) stuck in the drain exit to the sewer pipe. (And, thank you, Home Depot, for approving the return of a custom order.) Upstairs toilet showed Moffett's diagnosis to be, "spot on," as the calcium deposit inside the toilet drain was nearly one inch thick, reducing the hole to only one inch, in diameter. (Now I shudder to think that we've been drinking this fresh water.) Original review: After my subsequent research, I agree with the Tom Moffett technician: Kohler discontinued my (expensive) toilet model, and my other toilet (35 years-old) is pretty suspect, given our mineral-laden water supply. I am now ordering two new toilets and plan to hire Tom Moffett Plumbing, Inc. for the installation, and will keep Angie's List updated on the results.
Description of Work: When scheduling the appointment, I made it clear that I did not want "just an estimate," but, wanted all my vent pipes cleared. I was assured that Tom Moffett Plumbing, Inc., was not in the business of just providing estimates, but, would provide the requested services. . However, once on site, the service technician did analyze my problem and gave me plausible, previously-not-considered explanations for my poor-flushing toilets: One toilet was very old and had "calcium deposits" in the toilet drain, while the other was only five years-old, but, the toilet industry (e.g. Kohler) was "just learning" low-flow solutions for toilets.

Communication was done very well by both Ray and the home office. I was not able to be at the home during the repairs, and whenever I had questions the home office found Ray and my call was returned usually within the hour. Ray was also proactive in explaining everything that was wrong and what the options were with the repair.Tom Moffett Plumbing uses a structure price plan. I'm unfamiliar with what the price should be for such a job, but they did everything right the first time; which is great!
Description of Work: A natural gas leak was occuring somewhere in or around the home. I called Tom Moffett Plumbing. Ray called me that afternoon in order to schedule a time to come out the next day. He made sure the gas had been turned off by the gas company. The next day, he arrived with an assistant and checked out the lines throughout the home. A leak was confirmed, but easy access to all locations was not possible. We did the safe thing and re-piped the entire home the next day. Ray also pulled the permit for me. The re-piping was handled by two technicians who worked under Ray's supervision. They stayed late (9 pm) to finish the entire job, even when a piece of repair equipment failed. The system passed all leak tests on the first try, and also passed the city's review on the first try! The job also included installing new pipe behind a wall, which had to be stuccoed. The stucco work was also done very well and professionally. It turns out Tom Moffett Plumbing is also a general contractor.

Overall, everything turned out good. They had to come back to fix something they worked on the day before, but they came back out as soon as they could to fix it. They were very nice.
Description of Work: I had them replace 3 leaking water bibbs on the outside of the house. 2 of them were leaking and one of them was spraying water out of the top. They had to cut and weld 2 of them back on and the other one they just turned off and manually put it back on. They recommended they also install a Water pressure regulator to keep the pressure lower.

The first one was performed as expected, and received a good price per Angie's List special deal. Asked to return to replace two more, since the first one went so well. Alas the next two were much more expensive...one requires a different size of 'rough-in', the other one requires a 'low-boy' one piece. The two together costed more four times the first one. Didn't have enough patience to see if the price was proper.

Joe and Alvarado were punctual, quiet, respectful and extremely professional. The clean-up job they did was superior. Joe answered all my questions, and went above and beyond to explain all of the work. I had previously had some work done by plumbers that I was dissatisfied with, and he checked their work for me and reassured me that all had been done correctly. We discussed additional work that I decided to wait on having done, and Joe did not pressure me at all. It is a relief to have a plumber you can count on!

Crew showed up on time on the day scheduled. The first thing they did was ask to see the water heater & the clothes washer. They wanted to flush the water heater since it was too new to replace, & they noted the relief valve did not have a downspout to the floor. They also wanted to replace the water hoses & hose bibs on the washer. Then we discussed which toilets to install & one man went to get them while the other started removing the old ones. After the one man returned with the toilets, they showed me where two closet flanges were broken. They were able to replace them for an additional $500 (approx). They also installed the downspout on the water heater for free. I am very satisfied with the quality of work performed & the quality of the toilets installed, as well as the warranty period & terms. The one thing we found offputting was immediately after arrival their searching for other work to do before even assessing the job we hired them for. I suppose some people would appreciate their suggestions & I'm not saying their suggestions were incorrect, but it gave the feeling of taking your car in for an oil change & having the mechanic want to do hundreds of dollars of other work. It is for these reasons that we gave a B score & the comment we wouldn't use them again. We did appreciate the freebee water heater downspout, though. That was a nice touch. The condo installation went without a hitch & we were also very happy with that work. I will also note that they used shoe protection every time they entered the house.
Description of Work: We purchased an Angie's deal for replacement toilets @ $299 each. We bought five, three for our house & two for our condo.

Jaime from Tom Moffett Plumbing came exactly at the time promised, they even called to let me know that he was on the way. Jaime took a look at my plumbing issues and wrote up a quote that was almost identical to another quote I had received. I felt comfortable with giving the job to Tom Moffett Plumbing strictly because of Jamie's professional manner. Jaime explained the work he was going to perform and how long it would take. Jaime was very careful and meticulous with his work taking great care to make sure the job was done well and only once. He cleaned up the area that he worked so that when he left you would never have known that we just had some plumbing work done. I would defiantly use Tom Moffett for any future plumbing work.

I had to have my house re-piped and I had done research on Angie's List and other places for plumbing. They have very high ratings but I was not happy and felt that it was very important to communicate my experience with them. They misdiagnosed the problem the first time they came out. It was a slab leak and they had found puddles of water within the wall structure area underneath my furnace, but they walked out of my house leaving it there saying that it was a shower leak. Unfortunately, I was not at home when they came out since I was at work. I came home and found that the water was continuing to run from the leak and it was flooding my house. My walls ended up taking in a lot more water because it was allowed to run for that much longer and caused that much more damage. They had also done drain cleaning when they came out. I had to call them back out and tell them to look again since I still had water pouring into my house. They came back out that night and they now tell me that it is pretty obvious that it was a slab leak. It was now about 11 o' clock in the night and had become an emergency situation and this had been going on since the day prior to when I called them. It had become kind of a serious situation by this time and they recommended that I get re-piping done since it was a slab leak and they couldn’t tell exactly where the leak was. They told me that would come back in the morning to get started right away. We finally started the process for re-piping and I should tell you that they are one of the highest priced re-pipers out there. They caught me in a dire position and left me with no choice because of their misdiagnosis in the first place. They did the re-piping and I am sure that they did an excellent job, but I still had a couple of problems. I think that they used good material and they analyzed and did proper plumbing, but they didn't replace fixtures. They never gave me an option but replaced brass fixtures in my bathroom. They did this in two bathrooms without even telling me and did not give me any choices. They didn't give me any choices on the faucets either and it wasn't a logical replacement. I asked them to stop and told me that I did not want to use their product if that was the only one they were giving me, but they would give me no credit for not using their product. I went out and bought my own faucets and had them installed but they gave me no adjustment in the price difference for the faucets that they would have put in. I don't think that was fair. The work was now done but I find that I have some kind of a problem in my shower with hot water coming from the cold water outlet and cold coming from the hot. I also find that hot water never really gets hot and cold water is not really cold in other parts of my house. It took them three visits and three different people coming out to figure out that a valve had been put in upside down in the shower and that was causing cold water to run into hot water pipes and vice versa through out the house. They installed the shower valve but gave me no warranty for that. We finally got through that but they had kept telling me that my problem was with the hot water heater. They had told me that I needed a new hot water heater since it was not producing enough hot water and I got suckered into buying a new hot water heater. I did not buy it from them since they are definitely on the higher price of everything and I got it for $1500 less than the one they wanted to install. Their quote ranged from $1400 to $2800 for their water heater. I ended up buying a new water heater and getting it installed to find that I still had the same problem. The problem was solved only after they found that a valve had been put in upside down. Their misdiagnosis in both cases and their misinterpretation of the problem cost me a fair amount of money, and these people are number one on Angie's List. It was an experience about which other people should know and the problems I faced. I asked them whether I would get the 10 percent Angie's List discount and they accused me of hiding the fact that I had got the referral through Angie's List. I asked them as to how they could say that when they had given me the discount the first time when they did the re-piping work. They kind of huffed and puffed and called their office to inquire and finally gave me the 10 percent discount. The way they handled it made me wonder whether the bill would have been higher if they had known that I was a member of Angie's List. I also remember that the boss had been very curt during his interaction with me in the initial stages when we were trying to figure out all the problems, but he did apologize for that. It was not a good experience.
Description of Work: Tom Moffett Plumbing did re-piping in my house along with drain cleaning and installed a hot water heater. They also installed a valve in my water heater which they had put upside down in the first place.

Response from Tom Moffett Plumbing
After several attempts to contact the customer, we've elected to post a response here, although we REALLY would have rather attempted to come to a resolution with her first-hand. We offer 100% satisfaction guaranteed and we take that guarantee VERY seriously. In fact, the work she described was completed in July of 2010 and we worked diligently to resolve all of her issues at that time. As far as we knew, she was satisfied with the end result. She is absolutely correct in the issues she had from misdiagnosis to improper installation. We make no excuses for the fact that we made errors (one after another) in regards to this project. But what she fails to mention is that after our initial misdiagnosis, we came back later that evening (after 9:30PM) when she WAS home to get to the root of the issue. We stepped up to the plate and made every effort to make up for our initial error. We then discussed her options and came up with a long term solution to the slab leak by re-piping the home. We offered to complete the re-pipe at a 16% discount off our regular prices (which is more than the standard 10% we give Angie's List clients) to attempt to make up for our error. As far as giving credit for not using our valves in the shower, we had already installed our own when the customer wanted us to take them out and then install hers. We did this at no additional cost for our labor or misc parts. We felt that was fair at the time and I assumed it was discussed with her. If it wasn't, I sincerely apologize. Once the job was completed, she did have hot water problems that were a direct result of us mixing up the hot and cold pipes as they led to the water heater. We rectified this mistake as well (albeit after several days due to our manager being out of town for vacation.) We totally accept the fact that we made an error on the installation, and in fact both the technician that misdiagnosed the problem as well as the technician that performed the work are no longer employed by Tom Moffett Plumbing. Unfortunately we realize that the decision to terminate those employees occurred too late as we did fail the customer. In regards to the Angie's List discount, as I stated earlier, we completed the work at a total of discount that exceed the normal discount. Our service manager that authorized this discount did not explain to her that the greater discount superseded the standard discount. When she asked us about the 10% at the end of the job, we needed to confirm the verbiage used by our service manager. When we realized that no contingencies were placed on the 16% discount, we obliged the additional 10% discount giving the customer a total of over 24% off our standard price. We truly thought that we had made her very happy at that point. It's obvious that we failed her and I only wish that we would have known she was still upset in July of 2010 so we could have resolved her issue then. As I stated before, we have attempted to reach the customer after her negative report posted almost 18 months after the completed work. We still welcome a discussion to determine how we can make this right in her eyes. Again, we take our 100% satisfaction guarantee to heart and beg for the opportunity to make her happy.

I asked for a quote, the response was prompt and asked to me to call in. I called and was asked to give all my information then I was told about the estimate fee. I received a sorry you feel that way letter saying that other competitors do the same which is not accurate as there are other plumbing services on this list that do not.
Description of Work: This service charges $59.00 for coming to your house without doing any work. If the estimate is too high, you still owe the showing up/estimate fee. They take all the information, name, address, phone number and thereafter tell you about the fee. The problem is if you shop around, they give you a higher estimate you still owe the fee, Either way you pay more.

Response from Tom Moffett Plumbing
I'm sorry you felt that our upfront pricing was not in your best interest. We do not try to hide the fact that getting a fully trianed, background checked, and drug tested technician to your home in a truck stocked with thousands of parts costs something. Many plumbers choose not to and we can safely say that being in business since 1969, we have seen many of those companies go out of business. We could not background check our employees or not perform random drug testing, but who really wins by cutting these costs? Our fee is relatively small when compared to the alternative. And as we explained on the phone and via e-mail, we offer 100% satisfaction. If you weren't happy with our service or our technician, there would NEVER be any out of pocket expense to you. There really is no risk. We sincerely hope you were able to get your problem handled and thank you for the honest report.

I had and upstairs leak in the tub plumbing. The two plumbers sent were wonderful. Very professional and friendly. They got right to work and diagnosed the problem, which ended up not being as extensive as I though it was going to be. They sat down with me and explained everything they were going to do, with a written estimate and gave me a pricing book to look at too. I was very happy with the work and quality of the hardware. I have already told all of my co-workers and family how happy I was with the service and would highly recommend Moffett Plumbing. I'm a DIY person, but plumbing is not something I want to experiment with, so I'm very glad to know that I have someone I can call with confidence to help with my plumbing needs!

Jeremiah was terrific! He was friendly and determined to find the problem. He arrived the morning after we called and listened to our concerns. He did some testing to locate the leak and gave us an estimate. He also sold us on a maintenance plan for all our plumbing needs. We agreed to have him start the following day since it would take several hours and the water had to be turned off. There were two of them doing the work to repair old pipe. (Jeremiah and Rene). The work was completed in a timely manner and appears to have solved the problem. Thank you!
Description of Work: We had a leak from the upstairs bathroom down to the lower level ceiling. Jeremiah first did a complete check of the leak that took a couple of hours. He reviewed our options and gave us an estimate. He began work the following day and arranged to have someone come and repair the hole in the ceiling a couple of days later.
