Bob Tuck, owner of Atlas Heating, has been active in the business since 1977, so you certainly go way back in time with us. Thank you for your vote of confidence. It means a lot to us in these uncertain times.

The entire process was seamless. We had to have them out for estimates 3 times as the scope of the project kept changing. Mike came out everytime and was friendly, prompt and very helpful. The work was carried out cleanly, neatly and efficiently.

Mike Sherman, your estimator, will be very happy to hear that you are pleased. The installer, Mark Barnes, is tenacious about getting it right too. He wants to do work that can be shown off to friends at any time in the future. Thank you for letting us know.

Service person, Eric, was very straightforward and professional - made sure he explained everything - he was able to diagnose and suggest options to remedy - I liked having the options to pick from. Service was completed and all work performed was double checked before he left - "I don't leave until the flame comes back on - I don't like to be called back for something I didn't do properly" The next morning was the test as the temps had dropped a lot overnight - furnace came on and cycled to stage 2 as it should have - thank you Eric!!
Description of Work: We were experience a noise when our furnace started up but were also not happy about its overall performance. It is a two-stage furnace and we weren't certain stage 2 ever kicked in.

We certainly appreciate the time you took to write this. We are all so busy these days! Eric Steffensen is a stickler for taking his time and getting it right. He insists that we don't schedule him too tightly so that he can spend whatever time is necessary on each repair.

Poor communication and punctuality. Received a quote to have repair or replacement of my existing 1920's furnace and duct work. The service person was punctual and professional even though it ended up he couldn't fix the issue. Was then scheduled to get an estimator out to give estimate for larger repair and/or replacement. The day of our appt. the estimator was late, but called to say there was confusion on appt. time and he would be there an hour later than scheduled. Fine, at least he called. However, he then kept calling (after the new appointment time) to say he would arrive in 15 - 20 minutes. Almost 2 hours after the original appointment time, he finally showed up. It then took longer than promised to get the estimate. Return phone calls to me would take days, so would email responses. When calls were finally returned, it would be late in the evening - 7 or 8 pm! Decided to schedule the work since the actual service experience was good. Again, calls would take forever to be returned. Calls to confirm start date would even take days to return. After confirming the start date via phone and email, I then get a call asking if we were ready for the work to start..three days earlier than agreed upon! In the end, I cancelled the work. The final straw was when the estimator offered to knock the price down, due to the communication issues, but then said it would be at his subcontractors expense! That was a huge red flag to me, as the communication issues were solely with Atlas, not their abatement sub! Being that I work in the construction industry, to penalize a sub for your own lack of professionalism is completely unethical to me! When I do have the work done, it will be with another company.
Description of Work: Service call to repair damage to ductwork for my furnace. Initial service call went well, the service tech was punctual and professional. Even though he could not fix the problem, he immediately got me an appointment with an estimator to get a quote for the full repair or replacement. The problems started once the work was turned over to the estimator.

We are very pleased to have had the opportunity to provide an estimate for this customer and wished this could have worked out better. The estimate was provided within one week. The email communications concerning customer questions occurred mainly on 8/17, 8/29, 8/31, 9/06 and 9/13 with further attempts on our part after that. Our email log shows that with the exception of 8/31 (this was an email to move forward with the work which was not received by our estimator for an unknown send/receive reason), all emails from the customer received replies the same business day, and some within one hour. We do business outside the 9-5 traditional business day, but strive to limit evening calls to respect privacy and downtime. Although we feel that we devoted a lot of time, attention and follow up to this potential customer, we wish we could have done better to meet her expectations. Three days before the job was to start, we did call to set up a time to come out and do the "pre-site" which involves the job foreman further checking the job site to do final measuring and to resolve any issues the estimator may not have seen. This apparently was misunderstood as the “start” of the job and that was unfortunate. Close to the install date, the customer asked for the "Angie’s discount" we advertise - at the time it was 10% on any service repair. This was an installation, so it didn't qualify. The customer was clearly disappointed and the estimator was trying to find small ways to reduce the cost. We have a great relationship with this abatement sub and they reported that they were more than happy to help us satisfy her request. We do our best to meet our customer’s needs but were not able to do so in this particular case, much to our regret.

The appointment to visit and price my home for a furnace replacement was changed a few times, but finally Hunter showed up at an agreed upon time. I liked his thoroughness. He checked all registers in the house, and the condition of all ducts, and commented on heating efficiency in considerable detail. Hunter did say that his quote would probably be at the higher end, since they employ union workers and each is drug tested and so on. He also commented that my house (although 2400 sq. ft.) was a small job for Atlas, and that much of their work was commercial. The quote was to be emailed in less than a week. I never received any quote at all! I emailed three times, and called once......but no quote ever arrived, and there was no communication whatsever since the day Hunter left my house three weeks ago today. In spite of their evident HVAC competence, how can I recommend a company that simply ceases to communicate? I would have considered the quote seriously, even though it might have been higher than the rest. Instead I am left feeling that I would never do business with them.

This was a very unfortunate and unusal occurrence. Our estimator did spend quite a bit of time at the home and although it took a few days, he did complete the estimate. Prior to transcribing into an email, it (and all measurements and notes) were misfiled into another older estimate folder. Even with several searches it remained lost. Best course of action would have been to admit this to the customer and request another visit, even though embarrassing. Humble pie is usually the best course. We are sending this customer a gift certificate in case he should have a heating or AC need in the future. Lisa Tuck, Manager/Owner Since 1981

The office staff (mostly Hunter Tuck) was unresponsive to calls regarding scheduling, inspections, and other routine matters, once I had made a down payment. Additionally, they either did not know or misrepresented the fact that I was not eligible for the cash4appliances rebate ($300). (The ineligibility was buried in fine print.) I must say that the union installers were punctual, professional, diligent, and talented. They (at least partially) account for the fact that Atlas is not the cheapest option, but they were worth every penny. If I had to do this again, I would find a different company using Sheet Metal Workers Local 104. The furnace and associated equipment seem fine. My dissatisfaction is entirely with the office.

He spent about a half hour underneath the house looking at places where there might have been a problem. He informed me that I didn’t need to have any type air duct work redone, maybe just a cleaning instead. He was very honest and informed me there wasn’t a lot he could do or what would really change much with me HVAC system if I had the work redone. He spent time with me and he knew exactly what he was doing. I would recommend this company. They aren’t going to sell you something that you don’t need.

I am assigning an overall grade of C, ?average,? to Atlas, though I hope the average experience has been better than mine. In November 2010, I contracted with the company to replace an old floor furnace with a central furnace. I chose Atlas because of friends? recommendations and because of my earlier experience in replacing a floor furnace part. As deadlines for rebates were drawing near, I did not get estimates from other companies; therefore, I have no way of evaluating price. The installation took place during the week of December 6-10. A single installer was assigned to the job?the company being so busy that they couldn?t send a two-man crew. My man had major anger issues. He was polite to me, but muttered, complained and, on one occasion, had a serious meltdown. He tracked dirt over my hardwood floors on the first day because the company had run out of plastic boot covers (!). I was left without heat one night because the Atlas shop was late in producing an essential component. Fortunately, I was in good health. Many persons of my age (72) are not. Looking over the finished work, I found damage to the hardwood flooring. I left a phone message right away, asking for repairs, but it took three letters and seven weeks to get a response. On February 3, the shop manager and his repairman came to take care of my several needs: floor repair, replacement of a faulty thermostat, and some minor work required by the city building inspector. Both men were pleasant and capable. In June, to my dismay, a termite inspection crew discovered that the pieces of wood cut out for heat duct installation had been left on the (dirt) floor of the crawl space adjacent to the furnace area. There is no excuse for this kind of negligence. As I wrote in reply to a questionnaire from Atlas (referring to my initial contact in November): ?I would have more respect for Atlas if someone had said, ?We can?t give you our best-quality service at this time. You might want to consider another company.? ?

We contacted the customer and apologized profusely for this unfortunate series of events. The installer in question did have an anger issue due to a recent change in his family status. We tried very hard to work with him on this but ultimately we had to part ways. He is no longer with Atlas Heating. It’s hard to say why this installer didn’t have boot covers that day, the company did not run out of them for all of our crew, both in installation and in service. For a short period of time (December and January) we were busier than we’ve been in five years due to the last minute installations at the end of the two year major Federal Tax Credit period. In terms of this particular installation, we were clearly not able to dot the I’s and cross the t’s with our normal diligence. Although hard to recognize at the time, we now know there may have been two or three December 2010 jobs that did not meet our normal high standards in every single respect. We have worked to correct every problem and plan to stay in touch with these customers with free service and maintenance in the near future. We seem to have many, many happy customers and we take it very seriously when one is not.

Excellent. The unit works better than it has in a long time. If I ever have to replace the A/C unit or the furnace, I hope Atlas is around to perform the installation.
Description of Work: Honest, skilled service.Technicians in many fields would have been satisfied to replace the suspect part and walk away when the equipment was functional. Erick, the Atlas Technician, found a blown fuse and then troubleshot the electrical system to find out if there was anything out of the ordinary that made the fuse blow. I am an aviation maintenance manager, and if Erick was a licensed Airframe and Powerplant mechanic, I would have hired him away from Atlas at any salary.

It went great. Explained what he was doing the entire time, gave me some advice on how to preserve the heater's life, possibly. I had to remind him of the 10% Angie's List discount which the dispatcher had not told him, so he was surprised by it. But he took the 10% off. Not an issue. Was here about an hour plus some. Recommended thoroughly. Oh, the fix still works great, our heater seems fine 2 months into the repair.
Description of Work: Furnace issue or is it the thermostat? Atlas came out and checked the system, found a racquetball in the vent (dang kids!!!!) and advised that the furnace is about 20 years old and ready to have more issues as you go on in time. Explained what the current issues are, what to expect down the road, how much it will cost, etc. Very helpful throughout. He probably did much more than his visit price covered. I gave him a tip to make up the difference. But he was nice, clean, punctual and very well informed.

Professional service that is punctual and professional. They provided a detailed report on the estimate, provided options, and followed-up the request. used a different provider as they were doing some related work. Their pricing was identical to what I paid, and I received the same guarantees on the install. Thus, I would say there are fairly priced, even though my job was right at the top end, but that was related to the quality of the equipment purchased.

We arranged for the flue work in September 2010, but because of many delays on the part of the roofers, the new roof was not started until January 2011. The flue work need to be closely co-ordinated with the roofers, since it had to be done after the old roof (and chimney above the roof line) was removed, but before the new roof was installed. Each time the roof was delayed, I rescheduled with Atlas Heating. No problem, until the roofers actually started their job. We had Atlas Heating scheduled for the appropriate day several days in advance, but when the day came, they couldn't make it! With the roofers waiting, we spent an entire day pleading and begging with anyone we could reach at Atlas to send someone out. It got very difficult and complicated because there are actually TWO Atlas Heating companies: Atlas Heating & Air Conditioning Co. in Oakland, whom we had hired, and a separate Atlas Heating & Ventilating Co. in South San Francisco. Apparently they are owned by two brothers, and sometimes work together. When Atlas Heating in Oakland couldn't do our job, they referred us to their associates in South San Francisco. but we couldn't find anyone there who knew anything about our job. Finally in the early evening we contacted someone who promised that a work crew would be there the next day. They did show up punctually the next morning, and did their job that day. However, we had to call them back the next day though to fix a loud rattle which developed in the furnace. Apparently one of the workers had dropped a knife down one of the flues from the top.
Description of Work: As part of a new roof project on our 120-year old Victorian house in San Francisco, we decided to lower a brick chimney below the roof line, and install two metal flue liners down to a furnace, water heater, and gas fireplace on lower floors.. Atlas Heating installed the new liners, and vents above the roof line.

Our estimator was knowledgeable and efficient. We have a two story home that doesn't have an easy way of getting heat to the second story. He provided several options to address this. Our crawlspace is pretty tight-- mostly less than 30" to the floor joists; the estimator had to get permission to put out a bid. The work was done quickly over a couple of days with minimal interruption to us. All the workers were courteous and professional. They provided forms to get rebates from our taxes, PG&E and local sheet workers union who did the work and handled all the permits. There were no unexpected costs. We've had the system for a year now and are quite happy with it.

My experience with Atlas Heating & Air Conditioning was very long and evolved. They said they couldn't replace the heating system because of the positioning and because it wasn't up to code. He said that they could install it in a separate wall. The man who installed the unit carved out through the wall where the system would be placed. He looked and said that the door between the two rooms would cover the heater so he couldn't put it there. So, he stopped what he was doing and he had to rearrange the whole thing. Someone else had to come and seal up the wall and paint. They then had to order a new heater. So, the process which should've been one day ended up taking several weeks.

Customer service was super easy to deal with ( the woman who answered when I wanted Duct cleaning was really nice). They arrived on time and seemed to go about their work efficiently. Finished quicker than expected but did a thorough job. Explained a fair bit of what they were doing. Did not clean one of the furnances... as it would have ruined the duct work. That kind of professionalism , Not doing something that would hurt the client is a sign of a good business. They declined work , but made a happy customer. Thanks.
Description of Work: Cleaned air ducts in 26 year old home (which I bet had never been cleaned).
