All Seasons Construction

Drain Pipe Installation, Concrete Pouring and Repair, Foundation Repair,

About us

All Seasons has provided quality construction services since 1993. In the past several years the company’s focus has become foundations and drainage – areas that are particularly important when you consider the age of the homes in the area, the abundance of hills and California’s winter rains. Proper retaining walls, concrete application and drainage systems are critical to keeping your home protected from rainfall, ground water and runoff. Replacement of old, failing foundations is critical to keeping your home safe and still standing after the next big earthquake. All Seasons’ experienced foremen supervise every job and ensure that all work will stand the test of time and mother nature. We build beautiful decks, too! Additional DBA ASC Berkeley Inc.

Description of Work: I called All Seasons in part because of the excellent reviews they received on this site. Mark Corallo was available to come out quickly and was on time and very personable. We were interested in having some retrofitting work done. After talking to him for a couple of minutes, we went outside to look at the house. He walked around the house and pointed out a seam that indicated part of the foundation had been partially replaced. Then I showed him where he could look under the house so he could provide an estimate for the retrofitting fit. He looked (but did not crawl under) our house, scraping one finger across an area of the foundation that he could reach from outside the house. Then told me I needed half my foundation to be replaced (to the tune of 30k--three times what we had been planning to spend on the retrofitting); however, he encouraged me to hire a structural engineer if I wanted a second opinion. We did just that, and used someone our neighbor (who works in construction) highly recommended. The structural engineer came out and spent a full 45 minutes under the house. He examined every nook and cranny of the foundation, and wrote up a detailed report specifying what needed to be done. We specifically asked him to assess whether we needed to replace the other half of the foundation and told him to be conservative. His assessment: "No." He recommended a number of different improvements to make our house earthquake safer, but he said the foundation did not need to be replaced. My biggest concern with All Seasons was that Mark's inspection was cursory. I asked another friend (who is an architect and structural engineer) if it was appropriate to assess a house's foundation and prescribe replacing it without actually carefully examining the foundation by crawling beneath the house. He said no. Finally, we had another retrofitting company come out to do an inspection, and that person also spent about 30 minutes under the house. He also said the foundation did not need to be replaced and suggested similar fixes/improvements to the ones the structural engineer suggested. (I didn't tell this person anything the structural engineer had said prior to his assessment.) I can't speak to the work All Seasons does; it might be solid, but the assessment/estimate process was questionable, hence the low overall score.

Response from All Seasons Construction
I do 600-700 estimates per year so I cannot specifically recall {Member name removed} house but I do not recommend a customer consult with a structural engineer unless a foundation is borderline, so I must have had some uncertainty in {Member name removed} case. The work we do is expensive and I do not want anybody spending money that may be better directed to other home improvement projects. We have plenty to keep us busy and I have no need nor interest in over-selling anyone. I referred {Member name removed} to an engineer so she could get an independent third-party opinion from a qualified professional with no financial stake in the extent of the remedial measures recommended. That's what she did and I am, frankly, glad he felt that no substantial foundation repairs are necessary. {Member name removed} house was built in 1914. Assessing the need to remove and replace a 100 year-old foundation is not an exact science. Ask ten different engineers what they think and you may get several different solutions. As for the thoroughness of my inspection, sometimes I need to get into the crawl space and sometimes I don't. For example, a rotating foundation can be observed from the outside. As for the engineer spending 45 minutes under there, I would expect no less considering he is being paid a substantial fee for his assessment.

Description of Work: French drain and concrete work. Slow job due to constraints of job site, city with unreasonable requirements, one of three men sick, on his cell phone and not very helpful during whole job. Company too busy on other jobs to send someone to replace ailing worker. Concrete work is fine along sides of house but low quality in front where everyone will see it for the next 50 years. Some effort was made to improve it with okay results. Owner very professional and personable but once job starts you never see again. Concerns brought up before concrete was poured and assurances made by owner but forms for the clean-outs not made before the pour and a last minute rush to fix mistake looks like what it is, a mistake. Now we have to live with it. Clean-outs located in center of walkway are now a tripping hazard. Drainage works well and we are happy it's done. Quite disappointed after really liking the owner and super on the job and looking forward to having the work done. Too bad, all they had to do was take our concerns about form prep seriously and the job would have come out nicely. Maybe. Who knows.

I believe we did our best to make the corrections we could, but I understand the homeowner's disappointment and am sorry that the result was not 100% satisfactory. We have since made some policy and personnel changes to prevent the same issues from recurring.

Description of Work: They added drainage to a down sloping sidewalk leading to our basement door. They suggested a "reasonable" method, instead of an expensive, |exhaustive approach. | |It just rained significantly for the first time since the work was completed and the results are great! No standing water in the area that was a big puddle in previous wet years. | |The workers were punctual, quiet, professional, and tidy.

Response from All Seasons Construction
This was a very simple, partial sidewalk replacement that went very smoothly and with all required permits. I have no idea why [Member Name] was not pleased. The price he was quoted was exactly the price he paid. If he felt it was too much, then why did he hire us? In fact, we actually poured more square footage than was called for in the contract. I'm sorry of you were unhappy in any way and I wish you had contacted me about it instead of posting an unfavorable review. I work very hard to keep every single one of my customers happy. -Mark

Excellent from start to finish.
Description of Work: This is a terrific company. Mark Corello, the owner came out immediately, diagnosed the problem almost instantly, and how to fix it. I had a few other contractors look at my flooding basement who offered sketchy, uncertain and more expensive solutions. It was a huge relief to watch Mark diagnose it so fast and know exactly what needed to be done -- a deep drainage trench around 3 sides of my house, and a sump pump to push all the water back out to the street. This work required a permit from the city which Mark handled entirely, and very fast. No delays and this is Berkeley, famous for red tape. His team arrived on time every morning and worked like demons - they never ever seemed to take a break except for lunch. I never saw them standing around and just talking, and they were quiet - no radios blasting music, no loud voices, no shouting at each other. Their professionalism was wonderful -- they were responsive to me, answered my questions, were always polite and friendly, very considerate of my plants, and carefully separated my topsoil from the heavier, clay-like soil below as they dug so they could return the good soil back to the surface of the trench. They even managed to dig BENEATH my deck instead of removing it, and were so careful to put things back as they were. They laid two pipes in this huge trench, one to collect the water, and the other to pump it back to the street. The trench was lined with a water-proof tarp, then gravel, then the pipes, more gravel, and then the dirt put back in. This was a huge job and they did it beautifully. I am so impressed with this company, will contact them first for any new projects, tell all my friends and neighbors to call them, and give them the highest possible recommendation. And thank-you to Angie's List for helping me to find them!
