The House Next Door provided the worst experience I have had with a contractor in 18 years of home ownership. I cannot urge fellow Angie's List members strongly enough to avoid this company. If you must have any business with them, I suggest the following: ? Verify any claim they use to justify a cost overrun: In my case, Vic, their representative, requested a price increase (for tempered glass to meet code requirements) with the claim that my house is in a high fire hazard zone (VHFHSZ). Quick calls (later verified by email) to the county Building and Safety Office, and to my fire insurance agent, disproved that claim; And an estimate from another window vendor showed his figure for the glass upgrade to be inflated by 600%. Though I treated the claim (and inflated upgrade!) as an innocent mistake, the company offered no word of apology or explanation, which with other indications lead me to believe that such tactics are business as usual. ? Do not let them convince you to sign anything in a hurry ? either initially or for changes during the project. I regretted signing every contract and change order - especially the one that initiated this fiasco. You should take a day let the high pressure sales tactics fade before you sign. After catching the false overrun claim, work on my project slowed to a crawl. I sent numerous text messages, photos, and 'reminders' to Vic of the scope of the project to bring some progress. Eventually my lack of trust and confidence in Vic and this company lead me to dismiss them from the project - a process that was neither pleasant, fast, nor ultimately a bargain (except for my peace of mind - and any subsequent troubles avoided). There was plenty of messy - and incomplete - work left behind, but I found their delays and evasions to be intolerable. The quality of work was often laughably disappointing; Have you ever seen cracks in plaster 'repaired' with flexible bathroom caulk? ...Neither had I. Cracks began to appear almost immediately on their new drywall seams, and there is new paint over old bubbled paint (not properly prepped or sanded) that that could crack with a light push. The workers seemed to care about quality, and did some good work, so I suspect Vic's direction is responsible for the rushed and skipped areas. If you are already involved in a job with The House Next Door, I urge you to be wary of their claims, and don't allow yourself to be pressured or gouged. Good luck!
Description of Work: Installed drywall and insulation below water damaged ceiling, and painted damaged wall areas in 200 sq. ft. room. Other projects in the original contract, such as window installations and plaster repair were abandoned at the customer's (my) request. Cost of service above includes $1300 for a delivered, uninstalled window.

I was referred to the house next door by a friend. At the time there was Living Social coupon. kobi and his associate came out promptly and looked over the roof very thoroughly. They were extremely helpful and honest in their assessment of the work. They did not make up work that wasn't there and were very fair on the pricing. I thought they would have to come back, but they were able to do all of the work immediately. My entire experience with the house next door went seamlessly and I am thrilled. They take care of the work efficiently and I am totally pleased.

Tiled downstairs with plank tiles, replaced tiles in tub/shower with ceramic subway tiles, plank tile floors in 3 baths, replaced toilets in 3 baths, remodeled stall shower and tub in master bath, and crown molding along all flooring replaced and painted. had other prices that didn't include as much details for more money. Igor was there everyday making sure things were right. tiling was perfect. I was really spectacle the first day when the wrong color plank tile was installed, nobody wanted to believe me that it was gray not brown. one call to Ila at tile company and she confirmed the wrong tile was sent. Igor removed the tiles and started over without a problem. When the floors downstairs were done, we decided to redo 2 baths upstairs. The result was worth every penny.

On June 7, 2015 I had an appointment with Adam from HND. I wanted to upgrade my existing porch and steps with a decorative turned style railing. I showed him a picture of how I wanted my porch to look and he said he can do anything I wanted. We discussed it and looked at other jobs his company did and talked about the company philosophy. He recommended redwood for the material and talked about their 25yr warranty. He then stepped outside to make a phone call. He gave me a quote of $2500.00 and eventually I signed and entered into a contract with HND. I gave them a down payment check of$250.00. Two weeks later Adam returns and wants to cancel the contract and give me my money back. He said they made a mistake by bidding too low. I said I'm sorry but we have a contract. He left and sent his supervisor that same day. Mathew asked to see my copy of the contract. I told him why he didn't read the original copy. He didn't have time. I told him he should have come prepared. He asked again to see my copy, but I refused. We talked about my project and he said he wanted to make me a happy client. He took my phone number and said he was going to begin looking for suppliers for the materials and thanked me for my time. Since then I have left phone messages and emails but no one will return my calls.

Dear [Member name removed], I see what happened here. It looks like we gave you a call at 12:28 and 3:19 pm on 6-29 the day of our appt. Because we did not get a hold of you or hear back from you, we thought that an emergency or something else came up. When you did eventually call us back at 4:28 pm for our 4:30 appt. We had already booked that time slot. I'm very sorry for the miscommunication.

I called and told the man who answered the phone that I was looking to so some re-modeling. We talked about what I wanted to have done, and then he asked me if I was married or single. I told him married, and he said "When is a good time to come out to talk to you both about the work?" I told him that my husband wouldn't be able to be here right now, and he said he needed both owners to be present when giving an estimate. How Insulting!!!!!!! I know what we want done and my husband trusts me implicitly to decide on these matters. I will not ever consider using a company with such antiquated policies. Never. (Word to the wise).

We did not end up using this provider. The person who came out to the apartment initially did a thorough job on the porch, seemed to understand the project and I generally had a good feeling. However, when we sat down at the table to discuss he refused to provide a written quote (as an aside, I noticed someone else in the reviews had this same problem). Instead he just started in on this elaborate sales pitch telling me what other people would quote me and how they might not be the lowest quote but they would be better, but never even clearly stating what his quote would be or a breakdown of the price. He also insisted that we meet with my boyfriend as well despite the fact I told him that I would be making the decision. I got a follow-up phone call from their headquarters where they told me the guy who gave me the quote was out of the country and had been overpricing people because he was unaware they had extra materials in their warehouse and could give me a lower quote. Strangely, they didn't know what he quoted me and asked me what his quote was, and when I said I had no idea because he wasn't being clear, they told me they would send someone else out to give me another quote. Icing on the cake was they asked again to meet with both me and "my husband" (I guess they got that from the salesperson's notes, but still come on). If they had laid off the high-intensity sales pitch and had given me a written quote that was reasonable I might have actually gone with them based on the first 1/2 of the initial quote.

the salesperson that came out to the house would not provide a written estimate. We asked for the estimate approx 5 times. He insisted that we sign a contract at the time of his first and only visit. We of course did not sign the contract. A company representitave contacted us the next day and agreed the $38,000.00 Estm. was out of line and asked for a chance for the owner to come out and redeem himself. We did not waste their time or ours with any further discussion.

We've had some experience in remodeling from our first house so we expected some delays and of course going over budget but surprisingly enough this remodel took 5 weeks without a single dollar added . To our original contract . The house next door did a great job A to Z other than a few hiccups with the suppliers of the tile and rough weather for a couple of days it all went well. Thank you guys ! My experience was professional and smooth. While in the process of getting better homeowners insurance, I realized I needed retro-fitting and bolting (which by the way required in lid Angeles), I found "the House Next Door" on Angie's list. Good reviews & comments. They sent one of their senior project managers - Matt Levy, he came to give me free inspection and estimate. Actually crawled underneath the house. Very detail oriented & knowledgeable. We hired him right away. I'm very glad about my decision. The project went smoothly and the workers were respectful & dedicated. I highly recommended them for any project big or small.

The House Next Door was the third contractor company to give me a quote for a cement job needed in my backyard, did not call any other companies after meeting with one of the owner and his salesman. Their price for the work was more than i wanted to pay but glad I did, backed by their warranty I had no problems signing the contract. The work that there employees did was fast and outstanding, management came by again to look at the outcome. To sum everything up they are there for you from start to finish, beyond pleased with The House Next Door.

This is a summary of our experience with the contractor ? The House Next Door?. We had some water damage to our house. A pipe under the concrete in our kitchen beneath our refrigerator had 3 holes in it. This caused water damage throughout the house. After doing research for contractors on Angie?s list and the home advisory. 3 contractors were contacted. A representative by the name of Mike Bahiri from The House Next Door came out on September 5, 2014. Mike's bid was a little bit higher than the contractor we were going to use but, he seemed to be a very truthful man and he brought out a lot of documentation about the company that he worked for. He promised us superior workmanship and that the project would be done on time. The down payment in the amount of $670 was given to Mike on September 5, 2014. A few days later he sent a man out to paint the master bedroom . The person painted the bedroom but failed to tell us about a few things that happened. We later discovered that when he moved our bed he broke the headboard on both sides. He got paint on one of the curtains and left paint on the electrical outlets. Mike came out the following day to arrange to have the tile installed. He only brought out four samples. A selection was made and a date was set up for the tiled to be installed. A worker came out and began the process of removing all the tile. He started at 8:30 in the morning. He moved the refrigerator, stove and the dishwasher. As the day went on we noticed a haze on the tile. It made the tile look dirty. When we questioned the worker about this he stated that everything would be okay once it dries. Later we noticed that the grout lines were not uniform in color. He stated that everything would be okay once it dries. He did not allow the new tile to cure for 24 hours before he applied the grout. He completed the whole process in one day.The next morning at about 5:30 AM we notice water all over the floor. The water was coming from under the sink. When we looked under the sink we noticed a bucket. The bucket was overflowing and completely soaked the wood under the sink and water was all over the tile. We made a video of what happened and sent it to Mike through text messaging. The worker never told anyone that there was a bucket under the sink. Mike did not come out until 2 days later to see the damage. We found out later that the worker damaged the valve that turns the water on and off. This happened when he was moving the dishwasher. The same day that we discovered the water damage, another worker came out to put back the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher. We showed the worker what had happened and also showed him that the man that installed the tile left all the broken tile on the side of the house, left a mess on the grass from where he mixed the ingredients for the tile and grout, and left debris on the driveway and the walkway. Once the young man was done installing the appliances he left. He left dirty footprints all over the tile and did not clean up all the mess that was outside. Mike came out the following day. We showed Mike the problem under the sink and we emphasized that we were worried that the wood was going to begin to mildew and rot away. Mike said that would not happen. He suggested to just put a piece of wood on top of the preexisting wood. We told him that that was a very bad idea. We also showed him the mess that his workers did. We told him our biggest concern was the grout lines. They were still not uniformed in color and there was still a haze all over the tile. Mike said he didn?t see it. He said that his supervisor would come out and take a look at the problem. Mike told us that he was going to contact him right away. The supervisor?s name is Rotem Faigel. The next day, nobody called us. We made a phone call to the main office and left a message. Nobody contacted us for 3 days. The only reason we feel someone contacted us, was due to our request to Mike to send us the supervisors phone number. When we called him and he finally answered he told us he was just about to call us.The supervisor came out with another person and we shared with him our concerns. Before the supervisor came out we did a little research on the installation of tile and the problems that can rise from water damage under the sink. The supervisor agreed that there was a problem with the tile. He said he could see the discoloration of the grout line and he could see the haze that was making the tile look dirty. He said he was going to send out a person to resolve the issue with the tile. He also stated that he was going to send out a carpenter to fix the wood under the sink. 3 days later a person came to work on the tile. 3 people came out. When we shared with them what Rotem said he was going to do they begin to argue with us that they did not see any problems. At that point we became very upset with them and told them to leave. The man said he was going to call his boss to find out what he should do. When he came back he said that he was going to remove the grout and put new grout. He was going to use a product that would take the haze away. After they completed their work, they said it would take a day for everything to dry. The next day when we looked at the tile it looked just as bad as before. We text Rotem to let him know about the tile and to find out when the carpenter was going to come out. We received a text back stating that they are pretty busy right now and not sure when they can send a carpenter. Rotem never called, or came out to see the tile. After talking to the lawyer, we decided to allow the contractor one more chance to make things right. It took another week before the carpenter came out to fix the water damage. During this whole time there was a very bad smell coming from the wood. Mold began to grow under the sink. When we started to notice that mold was growing under the sink we alerted Mike about the issue. No one from the house next door has called us, or came out to check to see the quality of the work. We contacted another contractor to come in and fix the tile and complete the installation of our carpet. The company is save on carpet and tile. They did an excellent job. We did receive a text from Mike Bahiri on Monday, October 20, 2014 asking how we are We told him that nobody has contacted us, and we are upset about the tile. We have not heard from him since. One of the main concerns that we had about having this job completed quickly is, we have a 9- year-old son who has cerebral palsy. He is not able to walk on his own. The house had a lot of concrete exposed. We told the contractor ?The House Next Door? that it was important to get the carpet in as quick as possible because our son will scoot on the concrete floor. Mike told us not to worry, he will ensure the job gets completed quickly. The job was never completed.

I was approached by someone at Lowe's to have quotes. It was not under the name and quot; The House Next Doorand quot; and it was about modulars. The individual said they could give quotes on a variety of areas so I agreed. When a contractor showed up, he told me he was a boss, had a lot of power and money, and was able to give me great deals. I learned later he was the owner's son. He told me they were the only company allowed to contract with Lowe's. I learned later this was completely untrue. I called Lowe's and they had never heard of The House Next Door. They do not use them for contracting services. The gentleman who came to my house was very nice and funny and I trusted him. I was ready to contract with them and indeed signed the forms, but after I realized he only showed me the positive reviews on Yelp and no overall concerns, I researched them a bit more. I was too worried about what would happen and concerned about the professionalism based on the lies told to me, so I decided not to go further with them.
Description of Work: They offered a quote but after seeing reviews on Angie's List, Yelp, etc, I decided to not go with them.

This was a great experience, especially considering prior experience with contractors, where the contractor didn't come when promised, didn't get the work done properly or on time, tried to upbill the work, or took a deposit then disappeared. Ido, the contractor for The House Next Door, came to our home on time. He was personable and agreeable. He made a number of suggestions that helped us limit the cost of the several repairs/replacements, using his own contractor's discount to help buy the materials. The workers, David and Oscar, who came did the work perfectly, neatly and on time; all the work was completed in about one full work day. We had called Thermador, who made the vent, to come fix the roof blower, but when the guy came, he told us "we don't go on a roof." This is a flat roof with easy access from the house. David and Oscar weren't afraid to go on the roof, and got the job done. I heartily recommend them. Jessica Cohen

I really wanted to give The House Next Door a better review, but alas, let me share my experiences: First, the positive: HND doesn't appear to employ its own workers, but do they have great connections with a range of solid sub-contractors. I needed to get a lot of work done in a very short amount of time, so for me, being able to go to a single general contractor who could bring in and manage the appropriate resources was a huge help. Although I probably could have spent about $10-$15K less on my jobs had I hired workers myself, using HND saved me loads of time. There's also something to be said for a company that carries insurance, has up-to-date licenses, and provides paths for arbitration, if necessary. And maybe with one or two exceptions, the sub-contractors HND brought in to work on my home were excellent. The crew who handled my interior and exterior painting job was particularly great. They were super professional, extra careful, very nice, and did a really wonderful job. I couldn't be happier with the result. But now for the negative: HND employs duplicitous and manipulative sales practices. For me, this began on day one when a fellow came to my house wearing a construction vest and said he wanted to warn me about debris that might fall into my yard as a result of work his company was doing down the street. Turns out there was no work being done for any of my neighbors ... it was all just a ruse to make a sales call. (Other Yelp reviewers have complained about this as well.) The sales rep from HND came the next day. He was very hard sell ... and came on strong with the you-need-to-sign-today-work-must-start-tomorrow-and shy;can't-give-you-time-think about-it-or-get-other-quotes kind of thing. I was fine with that at first, since I was in a rush to get some work done, but this quickly morphed into claims that my house would burn down if I didn't spend $3,000 on a wiring job that I knew I didn't really need. So ... thumbs down on HND. Despite the great work done by their sub-contractors, I just can't recommend folks who manipulate, take advantage, and exaggerate in order to make a sale. My $0.02 to HND management: Rethink the way you're doing business. Your current approach might be lucrative in the short-run, but a truly sustainable company is built on honesty, integrity and stellar references. Start getting a reputation for being shady and you're sunk.
Description of Work: Replaced 1/2 roof, installed a stamped concrete patio, installed an Alumawood pergola, painted the interior and exterior of the house, and installed rain gutters.

My wife and I had a door to door sales agent visit us from the company and quot; The House Next Doorand quot; and we agreed to set up a date for a consult since we were thinking of tackling this project in the near future if it was not going to be too expensive. The sales consultant, Joe form Yugoslavia, was punctual at the door; note, it was imperative that both my wife and I be present during the consult or they would not show). We showed him what we wanted done along with an options of stamped and coloured half-circle driveway. All seemed to be going well until Joe just would NOT take No for an answer, and quot;God forbid.and quot; We explained that we needed more time to think and do some more research and compare prices but, Joe was very pushy and only wanted to give us 5-10 minutes to come up with a decision. He had explained that there was an initial quote of about $30,000 for the stamped and dyed job and 12,000 for just plain concrete that we're full priced and were negotiable depending on lumping our job in with other similar ones in the area. He came down from $23,000 for the first , but would not budge on the second except for a $1000 deduction for paying all cash. We went through several round of haggling with Joe and each time he seemed to be getting more and more upset that he was not getting the answer from us that he wanted! Needless to say, joe left without a contract. We may have given him a call back if it wasn't for his bad attitude, a bit unprofessional in our opinion. The very next day I received a call from a man named Robert from AAA construction claiming that he had spoken to me in December about wanting to have sort of concrete work done. I denied this as I was absolutely sure that I had not but Robert insisted that I had. My one major hesitation was that this may have been a company that did our neighbours yard across the street that we wanted to ask for an estimate, maybe the neighbours gave them our information? So, I set up an appointment. The next day 2 Russian guys, Nick and Igor, show up and we ask for just a basic concrete half-circle driveway. They give us a questionable and quot;presentationand quot; of scrolling through various photos on their laptop without much explanation other than this was their $100,000 job they recently did accompanied by random videos of them at work that were not at all helpful as well as some video and quot;testimonialsand quot; from supposed clients that we did not readily buy into. We were sure that these guys would have been just as pushy as Joe had we not firmly stated that we were not going to give them a decision that day. nick and Igor's initial estimate was roughly $20,000 dropping to $16,000 as compared to Joe's original 12,000. I'll tell you what, all of these guys are buddies that are just trying to break you down and get you to sign a deal because who could resist such a good discount, right? We have read at least one other review on this site that was EXACTLY what happened to us. Do not do business with these people unless you want to deal with pushy sales tactics or be suckered into paying for a job without doing any price comparisons.
