Description of Work: Background: I needed to redo my small backyard, and I was starting from scratch with a blank slate. My backyard consisted of dirt, no landscaping, no nothing. I had been mulling a backyard makeover for a few years and spoke with several other contractors over that time. A year or so ago, I hired a landscape designer to prepare a hardscape/landscape design that I could present to contractors. But I had misgivings about contractors' proposals and basically tabled my project. In 2013, I decided to proceed with my own design (incorporating some ideas from the landscape design plan I had commissioned); I wanted a contractor I could trust to execute the design. I was attracted to Jeff Miller based on his solid reviews. But when I contacted Jeff, I discovered an added bonus: Jeff's wife and business partner, Carole Miller. Jeff is an expert mason who jumps through hoops to make the customer happy. Carole, in turn, runs the business side of things coordinating bids; managing billing; explaining material options (paver options, in my case); and keeping the project on track. Jeff spoke with me extensively before submitting a bid. He offered welcome suggestions on ways to simplify a small retaining wall that was part of my design as well as smart ways to improve an existing drainage system in my slightly sloped backyard. Before signing the contract, I changed my design a few times, and Jeff was most accommodating in tweaking his bid to reflect my changes. When I connected with Jeff and Carole, I felt confident I had found my contractor--so confident that I chose not to get a second bid (though I knew the general price I wanted to pay since I had spoken with a few other contractors in the previous several years). I was willing to pay a market price to get a contractor who would do the job correctly. I'm sure I could have found a contractor to build my patio project for less money, but I was more interested in getting the work done correctly than in paying the lowest price. Jeff (and the hard-working, friendly crew that works for Jeff) did a masterful job, seamlessly tying in my new paver patio into an existing paver driveway and installing a comprehensive drainage system that extends under the pavers and through the backyard. I held off in writing a review until I could live with my patio for a few months. I am most happy with how the project came out and was thrilled, in February 2014's torrential rainstorms, to see that the drainage system worked perfectly. Conclusion: Jeff is an expert mason, not a designer. If you have a general design in mind for paver or masonry work, Jeff is a good man to execute your plan. (If you're really not sure what you want, then you may be better off hiring a hardscape designer and then getting a bid from Jeff to build it--or finding a contractor who can create a comprehensive design and build it). Jeff and Carole make a great team. Carole kept my project on track, was incredibly easy to deal with and always responsive (we mostly communicated by email). Jeff is a talented mason, has a fantastic customer-is-always-right work ethic and, like Carole, was really easy to deal with. So what impressed me most about Jeff? Probably the way he interacted with his crew. Jeff was right there in the trenches with them, and he treats his crew members with such respect. This is hard work, but Jeff knows how to make for a happy job site; I noticed a lot of laughing and good-natured ribbing. Job well done, Jeff.
