From the first contact about this job through the completion of the wall through clean up, We couldn't have asked for more. The start time had to be put off a number of times and office staff was helpful, supportive, and patient. The crew took care of our neighbors' trees and garden, as well as the raised garden bed in our yard and grown Magnolia tree. The removal of the old wall was done efficiently and carefully. The new wall is well constructed with good footing and steel, and finished with colored, smooth plaster.
Description of Work: A section of the boundary wall on the westside of our home was disintegrating ( It was a lath and plaster wall with no internal support.) We needed a crew to take out the rest of the wall, haul it away, and construct a new concrete block wall.

All went precisely as planned. We were given a start date, a finish date and all hours that were to be involved. The work team arrived on time, ready for work and were very capable and pleasant. The project involved removal and disposal of an old, concrete patio and walkway and the replacement of same, but in beautiful Pennsylvania Blue Stone. Juan and his crew adapted to some changes we made “on the fly” and contributed their expertise to solving any problems, of which there were few. The only negative was, perhaps, the price but I’ve learned over the years that you get what you pay for. In this case it was well worth the small additional cost. HIghly recommended. (Total sq. Footage of patio and walkway = 600 square feet.)

After seeing the quality and craftmenship on our entrance, we decided to extend the project to a perimeter brick wall and planter. These guys were expert masons and did a great job. They worked everyday until the project was done. They were fast efficient and let the job clean after working that day.

Jose or Juan (can't remember his name) came out to provide a quote. He was on time and very courteous. He understood exactly what I was asking for and said he would provide a quote. A few days later, I contacted the company to get a status on the quote and spoke to Carole. She said it takes a week and to give her a few more days. The quote eventually came. However, there was no breakdown details, but when I calculated what they wanted to charge based on the length and height of the wall, it came to to about $287 per linear foot. I immediately contacted Carole and told her there was no way this quote was correct. She said she would contact Juan/Jose and get back to me. After not hearing from her for a few days, I sent her another message through Angie's List and still nothing. I think it is extremely unprofessional for a proprietor not to respond to a potential customer.

[Member Name Removed], I always respond back. I had also asked you to email me direly or call the office directly, neither of which you did. . Communication thru the AL site does not work well for Mac-based businesses. i emailed you back that we were not able to reduce the price. Price per SF is not always the best indicator of the cost of a job, particularly a small job, as the smaller the job the higher the price per SF.... it's just like the cost per SF of houses. The smaller the house the higher the cost per SF. The larger the house, the lower the price per SF. If a project takes us a day to do, it does't matter whether the square footage is 25, 50, or 100 SF, it is still going to cost a day's worth of labor, (only the material cost will be less) It still takes the same time and money to load the truck, [Member Information Removed] to the job-site, unload the truck, do the work, re-load the truck,[Member Information Removed] the truck back and download. To Angie's List. I find that the larger AL has become, the sloppier AL has become in providing accurate information about their service providers. The answers you allow to the categories you provide are misleading and inaccurate. How can there be a" work completion date" when no work was done? How could someone" not hire us again" if they never hired us to begin with? My husband has worked for 37 years providing excellent service to our clients. We have 129 A reports for work that was performed. Reports from people who we did not work for should not be weighted the same as reports from people that we did work for.

Description of Work: This is Jeff's second time doing brickwork at our house. The first was a backyard patio and we were so thrilled with the results we decided to replace the concrete sidewalk that travelled down the east side of our house from the front to back and also did a curved extension in the front that went down the west side of house.

I've had good experience with them. They're local. He's breaking in somebody; his name's Juan, he's a very nice man. He's got a good crew. But Jeff and his wife in a few months are going to be moving to Ecuador, so I don't know if they are releasing the full company to Juan or if Juan is just going to manage it while they're down in Ecuador, I don't know what the arrangements were. I just recently had them do work around here and it was expensive, but they did a fairly good job. It's a good crew. They come in, they get right down to work. It took two weeks to do. There was a lot of dirt to be moved and put a walkway reinforcement here. They did a good job. Now they're not the cheapest, but they're not the most expensive. I just got done with them and I used them a couple of years ago. They came over to do a bid on the final portion of the project. I had to break the project down into two parts. The first part was the one that took about two weeks to do. So they came over, we talked the ideas up, I said kinda do a sketch and everything, and they'll get back to me. I think this one would probably last about a week at the most. It took them two weeks to do the job. They finished it up this last Friday. They did extensive work; nothing structural on the house, but just rearrangement of the back yard. They used stone and brick. Generally I don't give anybody A's because I always figure there's plenty of room for improvement, but since you're not doing a B-plus, I will give them an A. Tell Angie I want pluses and minuses. I used them once before, I liked their work, and they're the first ones that came to mind to do the second job. I didn't do competitive bidding. It was just getting the bid ready, they took a little bit longer than I wanted. They were always on time. They never abandoned the job; I'd have to give them an A on professionalism. Once they started the job, they were here for the job.
Description of Work: It was masonry work. There were planter boxes, these weren't like small planter boxes, they were to complete two walkways, a complete stone behind the garage, and building a bench.

Amazing! The place before Jeff and his team did the work was embarrassing. The driveway before was at one time gravel which had mostly eroded into a muddy mass of dirt. Jeff started by leveling the drive with earth which he packed down. Then laid bars everywhere that were wired together. Then the big trucked pulled with all that concrete - SO Much. His guys worked the stuff continuously until everything was even and beautiful. I can't get over it... THIS IS MY HOUSE! :D

Jeff and his employees did an amazing job. It is hard to tell where the repair/replacement of the brick occurred, and I believe in a short amount of time it will be impossible to know that any repair was done, that is how well the old brick got matched up. Carol, who runs the business end, is also wonderful person to work with along with Jeff. This is a family owned and run business. Jeff and Carol and their employees take pride in the job they do. They really care about customer satisfaction. They truly satisfied my wife and I with this one. We would not hesitate to use them again or refer them to friends.
Description of Work: We had backyard brick patio and walkway repaired after plumber replaced backyard drains and drain lines and had torn up approximately 80 feet x 2 of brickwork to do the job. The brickwork was older used brick and we wanted the replacement brickwork to match the original patio and wall way brick that had not been torn up in the process of the plumbing work.

Hi [Member Name Removed], Thanks for such a glowing report. Jeff is truly a master at matching to existing. It's amazing when you can't see where the old work stops and the new work begins. Most masonry repairs are easy to spot. It's a lot more labor intensive to make the work look seamless. Unfortunately many clients that go with a cheaper "repair" bid, are unhappy with the end result, THEN, the understand the difference between a high quality job and an adequate one. Some clients just live with it, but I would say at least 40 - 50% of the time they call us back and hire us to re-do the work, which of course, ends up costing more because we have to demo the new work they just had done. Regards, Carole & Jeff

How did it go you ask? Down the drain!!!!!!!!!!!!! What happened to his due diligence? We have lived in our house for over 40 tears and the driveway has NOT changed. He should have known about asphalt driveways. Why wait 3 weeks? I consider Jeff Miller Masonry to be deceiving, manipulative and dishonest. And he refused to compensate me for the extra cost to finish the job! I WOULD NEVER HIRE HIM AGAIN, OR RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE!! Pictures are available, but I unable "upload" them.
Description of Work: The contract was to replace my asphalt driveway with brick & concrete. It was fixed price with NO exclusions or contingencies. Three weeks into the job, he said that the asphalt was much thicker than he estimated (after 30 years as a contractor and supposedly very knowledgeable of City codes). He said he was losing money every day so he walked off the job leaving it less than half complete AND having received 3/4 of the contract dollars. He cancelled the contract and removed his name from the city permit which I had paid for.

Member, you filed a complaint with the CSLB a year ago. We went to Mandatory Arbitration . You lost. We were not found to be liable of anything, not in violation of anything and you received no money for anything. If we had done what you are saying,, we would have been ordered to pay you money, and would have possibly had our license suspended or revoked. The work was gorgeous, you said so yourself. There were Type 2 Differing Site Conditions that changed the scope of work. We acted totally responsibly and followed procedure. We’ll let our 110+ sparkling A reviews do the talking. Thank you.
Jeff was great. He and his crew were meticulous, conscientious and always consulted with us about how we wanted him to proceed. He also made sure to clean up every day. We would highly recommend him.

Jeff and his wife, Carole, were simply wonderful to work with. Beyond enjoying talking to Carole at every step of the process, I had a difficult scheduling situation to accommodate and she worked magic able to make the job happen in my needed timeframe. Then, upon meeting Jeff and walking him through the work we were hoping to have done, his lifelong experience as a mason became instantly clear. Just by looking at the brickwork, he taught me things about our home that I would have never known. It was so fun! And then when it came time to do the labor, it was done quickly, efficiently, and with materials that matched our nearly hundred year old masonry. We were so very pleased and Jeff Miller Masonry will be our first call when we need his services in the future.

At last we found a quality mason for our 1928 all brick house! I emailed Jeff Miller Masonry (JMM) on 5/5 to get an estimate for the job. His wife, Carole, called me back from his office the same day and set up an appt. for my husband and I to meet with Jeff on 5/7. Jeff showed up promptly. Carole provided a quote for me 5/8 and a formal bid 5/9. Jeff was very personable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the work. We liked his ideas on how to complement the old house with the new wall and to find the bricks to match. I was hesitant to start only because we had just a month to complete the project. We were fortunate that JMM was available the following week and Carole assured us that it would be done in time. They started the job 5/11 and worked every weekday until the project was completed 5/20 (8 days total). Jeff had a crew of 3 really pleasant guys which he worked along side with. They showed up at 8am sharp and worked 8-hours every day. Jeff is a great communicator and if ever there was a question or concern he would explain fully how it would be resolved. There were only a couple of errors during the process but they were remedied immediately. His estimate was spot on and the materials were at the low end of the quote. Jeff is very energetic, passionate about the art of brick-laying and has a good sense of humor too.

From the initial contact through the final followup, Jeff and Carole were super professional. Jeff correctly estimated the job, pointing out problems with the chimney that others missed. Even so, his proposal came in lower than the others, so I definitely got my money's worth. Terrific! I am so glad we hired Jeff! Other masons insisted that we needed to cut out and re-pour our garage floor, which would cost thousands of dollars. Jeff ground down and refilled the cracks for a fraction of the cost. The floor is now very smooth and functional. He also repaired stone trim around the house and areas where the foundation of the house had been exposed. His work is top notch, and he is also a really nice and personable guy. When he came to our house to give us an estimate, he offered tons of excellent advice for how we could fix things ourselves for minimal cost. I would definitely hire him again, and we will use him for bigger projects in the future. Because he is busy and we are out of his regular area, it took a bit of time and juggling to fit us in to his schedule. But it was definitely worth the wait. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: repaired garage floor; fixed areas of foundation and decorative stonework
The previous owners of the house replaced the grass in the back yard with natural stones that are cemented in. Unfortunately they did it themselves and this has already cost me a lot of headaches and money (e.g. when the gas line that was cemented over needed to be replaced). With the El Nino precursors in January another problem of the patio became hard to ignore: the patio was not leveled correctly and quite a bit of water was getting into the garage. Jeff came out twice to look at the situation and figure out ways that the issue could be resolved. We decided to only pull up half of the patio stones and not fully cement them back in so that there is also some chance for rain water to get into the ground (and to keep the cost under control which he was very conscious of). In addition to re-leveling the stones (most could be saved but some new ones had to be put in) Jeff installed a lot of new drainage (it turned out that even the existing drainage was not going anywhere - the were just slightly deeper holes in the ground). A lot of things only became clear during the job (which was >1 week) and Jeff did a lot of adjustments and extras during the work (cutting off some steal sticking out of the patio which were remnants from former beams holding up a roof, etc.) without any extra charges. He and his crew were super reliable and diligent. I had to be gone for work for a number of days and I totally trusted them to do everything as discussed - rightfully so. I am so happy to have this problem solved and in a timely manner before more storms are coming our ways. I highly recommend Jeff (and Caroly who coordinates things from the office) to anybody.

A delivery truck backed into the low brick wall that borders the front of my house. There were several bricks that were damaged and needed replacement. Jeff Miller has done several projects around my house and he is my ?go to? guy for this kind of work. I called Carole in his office, sent pictures of the damage and he came out to make the repairs within a few days of my call. I originally got his name from Angie?s List and once again, I am grateful that I found him. There are people who work in brick and stone. Then there are the craftsmen who are artists?and they happen to work in brick and stone. Jeff Miller is the consummate craftsman and artist. He was able to repair my brick wall and make it look as though there was never a problem. Jeff takes a lot of pride in his work and it shows. He arrives on time, gets the work done in a timely manner and cleans up perfectly so no one is the wiser. He is a very personable guy and a pleasure to deal with. The most important thing to him was that I was satisfied with the work. I really value someone who takes the kind of pride in his work that he does. Thanks Jeff.

Hi [Member Name Removed], You really summed up Jeff to a T. He really is an amazing artist and restoration expert, I think you were one of his first clients way back when we first joined AL. We're so happy that 8 years later you feel exactly the same way. That says a lot. Always a pleasure, maybe some road cones for the delivery guys :) Best, Jeff and Carole

Jeff Miller and his wife Carole are a very good team. They are very responsive. Jeff is a very professionnal, courteous and collaborative contractor. We came with our own design and Jeff's feedback and craftmanship made it better. Overall, it was a stress free experience, that is something that we are looking for with contractor work. We highly recommend his service.
