I hired Brody Pernell to repair a broken HVAC unit at my home today. They came out within 1 hour of the call which was very impressive. We hadn't worked with them since 2006.$310 later, the HVAC unit was repaired but the service tech was REALLY pushing us signing with them for a $300 per year agreement. They wouldn't look at my second unit without paying an additional $95. I declined. Four hours later, the HVAC unit is broken again and we have an 18 day old at home. Brand new baby with the internal temp in the house at 81 degrees. I called back and got an answering service. Their after-hours tech called me and offered ZERO warranty for their work. He said it was $210 per hour for work plus parts. He then yelled at me and used vulgarity. He was from India or someplace outside of the US although located here. In any culture, this is an unacceptable way to treat or speak to a client. I will be doing a charge back on my credit card after writing this review but I signed up for a new account and made sure that I paid to get this review live..NOBODY should do business with this company. Ever. The next day I hired another firm who came out and found that the Brody Pernell tech had left a piece of cardboard in the pump that the replaced thus causing another failure. That was removed and the unit is working well now. $171 in extra cost for a weekend visit but it was worth it. They also checked the second unit and never asked for a maintenance contract. In fact, I asked them as they earned it. I will leave their name out of this as my complaint is about how bad Brody Pernell is not to promote someone else.

Response from Brody-Pennell Heating and AC
We responded and replace a defectice condensate pump and charged $310.00. Our technician offered the customer to purchase a maintenance agreement in that the system had not been maintained for six years. It was explained that with the maintenance agreement he could give him 10% off the price of repairs (the customer declined). The customer then wanted him to check a second system for free which our technician explained he could not do (customer was not happy about that). However in business it would be the same a going to a restaurant and ordering a meal and expecting a second meal for free. Some time Friday evening the customer spoke to our on call emergencey technician, he listened to the customer berate the previous technician calling him an "Indian Moron" and demanded immediate service under the warranty. Our technician explained it is clearly written on the work order that the warranty is for 1 year during normal business hours. At this point in my estimation the conversation got heated on both parties part. People do not like their ethnicity challenged and statement like how mainy Indians does your company have in inappropriate. Fact the gentleman he was talking to decended from Armenia, has been an American citizen for 40 years and an employee of our company for 25 years. Upon learning of this incident on Monday, 4/23 I left a voice message at the customers home to date I have received NO response (4/25 @ 3:20 PM).

Technician did a good job finding problem and was very polite. However, price he quoted me for the part was outrageous. My heating unit needed a new control board. The technician quoted a price of $850 for the board. I thanked him for his time and told him I would not get the part from him. I found the exact board on-line for under $130 and installed it myself.

Member is a do it yourself mechanic however he does not have the technical expertise to diagnose the problem. Once we diagnosed the problem he had no intentions of having a professional company repair the problem. You certainly can go on line and prchase parts, however they have no warranty. A professional business warrants the part and labor for one year. Further we have overhead and employees with benefits, trucks that require fuel and insurance. We are also allowed to make a profit so we can remain in business. The member is strictly a price shopper and puts no value on quality service.

Brody Pennell was one of six heating/AC companies I met with to get estimates for installing a new furnace (heating only, no AC) and installing all new ducts. While their estimate was second highest of the six companies, I had read reviews on Angie's List and have a friend who recommend this company, so I was prepared to spend a little more for quality work. I was not disappointed. The tradesman recommended to patch the walls where the new registers needed to be cut did an excellent job. The cost of this work was included in my contract. The sales personnel ( Brian), the job supervisor Jamie, as well as the installers, were knowledgeable, professional and easy to work with. When the Los Angeles City Inspector came to inspect the job, he was very impressed with the quality of the work. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: I needed to replace 1960 furnace and all of the heating ducts in my house. The old heating ducts needed to be removed from the crawl space under the house and new heating ducts installed in the attic, plus new registers cut into the ceilings and walls and the old floor registers sealed off.

This is the worst company I have ever delt with-Randy Gibbs the owner is a rude man-The tech was called out to look at why the HVAC was not cooling the house very well-The tech appt was from 1-4-The tech shows up at 4:45PM LATE-With no call ahead to say he was running late-Very Unprofessional-and wasting our time !Then the tech rushes the job -He turned the transformer that was previouly working-The tech then blames the past techs on not connecting a wire that slipped and burned the transformer up-Not Cool-The tech thne tells me he can replace the transformer and install for 2$99.00 WHAT ! He blew it up !And then he will check for leaks in the system for another $500.00 ( even if it akes him 10 minutes to find the leak)I paid him his 99 call charge and was MADI called Randy Gibbs the owner to tell him what had happened and that I would like them to replace the transformer for free due to the tech blowing it up !Randy says it was the fault of a previous tech not connecting the wires ! Really Randy ! and he will not replace and install the once working transformer-When I talked with him he was rude and condesending -I ask him if the $300.00 to replace the unit and act professionally mattered to him-No he didn't not care one bit about customer satisfacion nor doing the right thing- The service performed was breaking my working transformer and not fixing it Randy Gibbs is a mean and rude man and runs a crappy company that rather not own up to their mistakes and try and rip the customer off- Really Randy -you could not make this right and fix the transformer for $300.00 - Wow what a great guy you are-
Description of Work: We called Brody-P to have our HVAC system looked at due to it not coolng the house very well- They had installed the unit and there was also a question as to whether the install was wrong and causing the unit to fail (the Unit is a Carrier 6 years old) But not used much in that amount of time-The house was vacant and lots of traveling- Anyway the tech came to access the HVAC unit-He was 45 minutes late by the way-He then tunred on the system and then turned it off-He opened the panal and claims the wire was loose and burned up the transformer-I was not there to Verify !! Now he wants to charge me for the transformer (he broke) and a big fee to search for leaks in the system-The freon was low- The tech said the Unit was installed fine and that the 6 inches from the buiding was ok and that it was no need to worry- Even tho the install specs say a 9-12 inches is the amount- Randy Gibbs the owner also claims that the specs are just guidelines ! Hmmm

There are certainly two sides to every story. We installed system approximately (6) years ago and have provided no service until we received a service request for NO COOLING at 12:16pm on 8/17/2011. We did give an estimated arrival time of between 1 and 4pm however the property is tenant occupied and we did not have the telephone number for the tenant. Upon arrival our technician turned on the system and found it was not producing the amount of cold air required. Technician opened access panel to check out the equipment and there was an immediate electrical short circuit while removing said panel. Our technician discovered the electrical connectors were left bare (wire nuts removed) for the low voltage transformer (tenant observed same). Tenant advised our technician that owner has had (2) service companies out prior to our visit. Our technician installed a temporary transformer to diagnose the system and found the refrigerant system in need for refrigerant. Due to Federal EPA requirements we quoted the customer a priace to do a leak search and replace the burned out transformer. Customer was charged a diagnostic charge of $95.00. I spoke to the owner 8/19/2011, she was extremely demanding would not listen to any explanation and refused to contact her previous service companies regarding leaving the electrical connection bare and subject to shorting. Stated if I did not replace the transformer at no charge she would do everything possible on the internet to ruin our reputation. At this point I suggested that it would be better for both of us that she find a different service company and in that we had not processed the diagnostic charge of $95.00 to her credit card there would be no charges from Brody-Pennell. The owner then proceeded to call me a profane name and hung up the phone. We did not charge for our diagnostic services. Regarding the $300.00 she requests, the failure was created by her previous service provider not our company. To require my company to resolve this matter by paying her $300.00 (for services improperly rendered by others) or you will print this matter in your magazine is in my opinion an act of extortion. Best Regards, Randy Gibbs President/Owner

I called at 5:30 on Friday evening and was able to schedule a Monday appointment to look at my A/C. The person who took my call was very professional and actually saved me some headaches when she was able to find a cancellation that enabled me to get the first AM appt. on the Monday. The technician arrived right on time at 8:00AM and was very professional. He quickly diagnosed the issue with our A/C and even showed me the part that had burnt out. After checking to make sure he had the part, he gave me a quote for the part and labor. He finished the entire job in about 1/2 an hour.
Description of Work: Our A/C unit suddenly stopped working. When we turned it on at the thermostat only lukewarm air came into the house. I checked our circuit breakers to make sure we didn't have a short, and we did not. The Tech came out, looked at the unit. Disconnected the power to check the fuses (which were fine) and then checked the coils. Turned out one was burnt out and had to be replaced. All in all a great experience. The Tech was prompt and on time. very professional, knew exactly what to look for and made the diagnosis quickly. Once diagnosed, he found the replacement part and fixed the unit very quickly.

Overall we are very happy with the work done and the technician who performed the work. We are not happy with our scheduling experience. Because of the scheduler's incompetence we slept poorly for another hot night, and I was late to my meeting, over an hour late, the next day. Had the scheduler seemed contrite I would have been accepting of her error, but her apology had seemed very perfunctory, and she did not seem eager to correct the problem she had created.
Description of Work: Our thirty year old air conditioning unit located in the attic of our home had leaked into the bedroom located below the unit. Although the pan was full, it had not overflowed, and when the air conditioning was turned off the water ceased to leak into our bedroom, an indication that the pan was not the water source. When I called to schedule our service appointment I scheduled it for a time when I could be sure to be home, after 1:00 p.m. the day following the day on which I contacted the company. I rushed home the next day, but when no one had arrived by 4:00 p.m. I again called the company and was informed that I did not have an appointment. All of my information was in the computer, just no appointment. The woman with whom I had spoken was located, and she apologized but not very convincingly. She offered me an appointment for the next afternoon, a time that was impossible for me because I had a meeting starting at noon. When I explained my time constraints she offered me a morning appointment, but seemed reluctant. I felt that after her error she should have seemed eager to arrange an appointment for me at the earliest time possible. As I waited for the arrival of the air conditioning technician the next morning I was concerned about making it to my meeting. I felt that I should have been given the first appointment of the day. I began to have hope for my meeting, however, when the technician arrived at 10:30 a.m.. He seemed extremely competent and capable of working with old equipment in an old house. I had selected the company because it was an old one located in a part of the city where they would encounter houses built in the twenties and equipment installed a while back, equipment that was for the most part working very well. The technician was everything that I had hoped for. He identified the problems causing the leak and repaired them. He did not suggest that because of the age of the unit we should not bother to repair it but should instead buy a new one.

I signed the contract. Then a neighbor told me that she was having the same unit installed for a price that was over $2,000 cheaper. I realised I had been overcharged and rescinded the contract within the three day rescission period. Brody Pennell retaliated by reporting the second company to the State Contractor's License Board saying that the second company was unlicensed (this was not true) and contacted the city to report that the units were installed without permits. (This was true - the complex does not have fixed ladders and so we could not get permits - but Brody-Pennell were also willing to do the job without permits.)
Description of Work: I found Brody-Pennell on Angie's list. They came out and quoted me a price of close to $7,000 to replace a heating and a/c unit.

My heater stopped working, so I called Brody & Pennell - they recieved great reviews here. They found that the filter was 100% clogged (my bad), so they cleaned it and checked that it was working again. Later the following week it was not working again. I called, and they came out the same day to check on it. As it turns out, the motor is wearing out (old unit), and it's overheating and not working for periods of time while it cools down. They recommended replacing it and offered to provide some estimates. The nice thing is that they did not charge me for the second visit. I really appreciated this. They were very professional.

They were very professional and courteous from start to finish. We were having problems with our heater and asked them to send someone out to look at it. They informed me it would be $95 to have someone assess the situation. The person came out the next day, as scheduled. He was friendly and thorough. He replaced the filter and performed some maintenance on the heater, after which the heater seems to work perfectly. With the Angie's List coupon, it total cost ended up being $75. Fair price and good value.

I had been a satisfied customer of Brody-Pennell for over 25 years. I have had a heating & AC maintenance service contract with them for the last 15 years. The last time they found that my 27 year old AC condenser was low on freon and needed a new access valve. They said the part was no longer available and the unit would have to be replaced. A salesman came and also told me that it would have to be replaced. He said that since the old unit used R-22 freon and the new unit would use R-410A freon, I would have to replace the evaporator also. He said he would get me 3 possible quotes by the following Tuesday. To repair if possible, just the AC and the AV and heating system. I never received a quote after calling 3 times. As a result I called other companies on Angie's List and found out that the AC was in fact repairable for $400-$500 and that If I did replace the condenser, I would not have to replace the evaporator, just the expansion valve to accommodate the R-410A freon. I ended contacting a total of 5 companies before selecting Grand Heating & Air.
Description of Work: I did not have a new air conditioner installed by Brody-Pennell, because the salesman never gave me a price quote and gave me false information.

Our comfort consultant gave the Member a proposal to replace the condenser and evaporator coil on July 6, 2010 in the amount of $4,604.00. The Member wanted us to supply him with the information so he could shop (on the internet which he as done before) for the part and if found have us or another contractor install on his 27 year old equipment. With all due respect to Grand Heating & A/C NO 27 year old coil is rated acceptable for the high pressures of a R-410a refrigerant system. We try our best to advise our customers as to the right options for them, however it you call enought contractors you will eventually find one that will give you the cheapest price. Who do you call when the cheap repair does not work?

They came out and basically told us their was one way to do the job. They would cut a hole in the roof and the large unit would sit inside and have ducting go throughout. We received their quote but decided to go with another company since we felt more comfortable with them and they provided us several solutions that were less invasive. After we decided to go with Jeff at JW Heating and Air I wrote Brody to let them know and I was not pleased by the response I received. Hi Ken, Thanks so much for the proposal you prepared for us. We've decided to go with another company. Thanks, "Thank You, I understand the building is not yours, so I realize you did not need the best company to do the job. Good Luck with it, maybe I can help you in the future." I did not appreciate their response...we chose the best company for us!

Three areas for improvement: a) the guys who showed up didn't know the extent of the job - for example, they told me that relocating and installing a new thermostat was not included. I had to show them my copy of the quote after which they willing performed the work b) the crews should plan on spending time with the homeowner showing me how to operate the furnace. I called to them as they were getting into their truck to come back and give me a mini-lesson. c) The crew set the pilot light at its very highest setting - quite a flame and very expensive to run; I called and had to reschedule a second appointment to reset the pilot. It was explained to me that the furnace comes this way from the factory and that I cannot adjust it myself. If this is true, they should consult the homeowner on the desired setting.

It's the follow up. Every year they send me a bill for $259.00 which was sold to me as a "contract" that would have a technician check my units, change the filter and, this is where it gets nasty, cover service calls. When my a/c went out today (8/24) and I called, I was told thee was a $85 charge for diagnostic service. Sally did not care that I felt misled. She did not care that not only have I gone along with this program (filters can be purchased for maybe $20 at a home improvement store, but I was banking on what they would not provide.) but I got a neighbor to put in a similar unit for even more than what I spent. Full disclosure - they sent me a check for $50 a year ago, with no explanation.)
Description of Work: They installed heating and air conditioning units.

Response from Brody-Pennell Heating and AC
The member called our office to request service for his system on July 24th. Our customer service representative advised him there was a charge to send a technician to diagnose his problem. He became very abusive to not only the representative but her supervisor. They pointed out to him that he has a maintenance agreement with our company which entitles him to preferred service and a 10% discount on parts and labor. He would not listen made some threats and hung-up. Several days later the member's wife called me in response to my letter stating our representatives should be better trained in handling people like her husband, further that he did not take the time to read his maintenance agreement. She offered no apology for the abuse that our people had to take. Said her husband was going to write a negative report on Angie’s List because we would not give him free service.

The company maintenance person arrived on time. He was extremely courteous. He performed a very extensive and thorough examination of the entire air conditioning system from testing the airflow output, looking at all electrical connections and checking electricity usage, checking for carbon dioxide emissions, testing the thermostat functioning and freon levels, and replacing filters. He took a good 45 minutes to give everything a thorough check.
Description of Work: Performed regular maintenance on my central air conditioning system. This system had not had any maintenance performed for multiple years.
