Window Restoration and Repair evidently has plenty of work. They might be the only company specializing in restoring old windows in historic buildings. My house is not historic but I have many old steel casement windows that I do not want to have to replace. Many of them did not close well and so leaked considerable amounts of air. As I get older, the breeziness of my house bothers me more so I decided to have them fixed. There was a wait time of three months after signing a contract before they had time to do the work. On the appointed day, two men showed up and sanded the offending windows smooth, using a grinder when necessary on severely warped windows. They replaced broken hardware and oiled the hinges and tracks. The windows now all work beautifully. They do not paint the windows so after they do their magic it is necessary to have them painted because they are down to bare metal. My only comment is that $1750 seems pretty expensive for one day of work when they didn't have to provide any materials except a couple of clasps and screws. Still, they don't seem to have any competition and they have lots of work so I guess that's the going rate.
Description of Work: Window Restoration and Repair restored to good working order 10 old steel casement windows.

It all started when I noticed one of our double hung windows had a crack along the bottom of the frame. My initial thought was we needed to replace the entire window. I started to research replacement windows and came across Window Restoration and Repair which specializes in restoring wood windows instead of replacing. Best decision I ever made was to go with this company. From the initial meeting for an estimate all the way through to the end of the project, they were proffessional, informative and great to work with. We did the walk through and the bid came in with each window or door broken out price wise so we could make an informative decision on what we could afford to do. The owner Ed even came out for a visit after we agreed to what we would have done, just to make sure the measurements for the new window to be installed where correct and that something he saw in one fo the pictures taken on the initial walk thru wouldn't be a problem. I appreciated that he wanted to make sure what we wanted was possible and not just put the window in and hope for the best. The acutal day of the work went without a hitch. Brian and his crew showed up on time and got right to work. Brian walked me through again what was to be done and he explaned what would be happening during the process. These are craftsman! They had pride in what they were doing and wanted to make sure everything was working, looked good and to the highest standards. The new window is beautiful and they took their time to install it properly and get rid of excess wood that was added in for the aluminum window that came years later. They took it all the way back to the original sill from 1921. The restoration of our existing windows and front door was also done with impeccible attention to details. They took the windows and door off their hinges and touched up the loose areas and shaved off layers of paint and wood to make them square. The front door was done with an artists precision. I'm not describing all they did in enough detail, but needless to say I am over the moon with their work. I would and will hire them again to finish the rest of our windows when that time comes.
Description of Work: We had them replace a large aluminum double sliding window with a new wood single slider to match the style of our 1921 California Bungalow. We also had them restore and repair 5 casement windows, 1 double-hung window and "the original to the house" 42" front door.

Here is an excerpt of a thank you email I sent to the company upon completion: My wife and I are extremely pleased with the work you guys did. Brian did an excellent job of explaining everything, and most importantly, even though the job was only supposed to take 3 days, Brian stayed for a fourth day, working as long as necessary to get everything done and done right! I was also pleased with the daily clean up and the concern for intruding as little as possible into our daily lives and home. Other pluses (not necessarily in order of importance): 1) Daily calls from Brian letting me know his ETA 2) All of the other dudes on the crew introduced themselves to me 3) No haggling over paying for the cleaning of the window coverings 4) Brian explaining to the painter what needed to be taken care of. (BTW: The painter remarked of Brian: "He knows what he's doing.") 5) Brian showing me how to apply the bees wax/lubricant to be sure the windows continue to work properly 6) Brian reminding me that the work is guaranteed 7) Just as you said, Norm, the house is warmer, tighter, and less noisy It is clear that Brian loves what he does and he cares that it is done right--not just for me but for the firm and for himself. This is a rare person, and I'm pleased to have had my house benefit from his work and craftsmanship. The house feels great, and I couldn't be happier with how things turned out. Thank you and especially thank you to Brian!!!
Description of Work: Window Restoration repaired and restored about 2 dozens windows and 1 front door in my home. Many were originals or very old and had been painted shut. All of them leaked air and noise, creating high heating/air bills. They had to remove the windows, sand/saw drill, patch, seal, etc. as necessary. Now, all of the windows work perfectly well. They can open and close easily, and they are "air tight" when closed. The difference is tangible.

They were really good. They just came in a very workmanlike way. I think it was three men. They did their job and left the house neatly. What they said they would do, they did. I thought it was very pricey but I was tired of living in a house where windows wouldn't open or would come crashing down.

The project started with an inspection and estimate of services with their salesman, Norm. He did an excellent presentation and convinced us that our existing windows were worth restoring thereby preserving the character of our house and giving us another 100 years of use. There was a wait of several months before the project could start, but it was worth waiting for. Brian and his crew were on time, courteous throughout the project and obviously skilled at what they were doing. Brian did a walkthrough at the beginning and end of the project to explain what they would be doing and then advising us on how to care for the windows afterward. In addition to having 6 windows restored and weather stripped, they handled getting a very damaged leaded glass window replaced. They outsourced the construction of the leaded glass window to a highly skilled craftsman and then handled the installation. This was all coordinated seamlessly. Having the leaded glass window replaced drove up the usual cost for such a window restoration project, but we couldn't be happier with the result of the entire project. We highly recommend this company for customers who care about preserving the character of their homes.

They arrived on time, five guys. Worked all day, cleaned up in each unit and outside, all in one day. The windows work great now, and I have a painter painting them now!
Description of Work: WR&R unsealed six original windows that had been sealed and painted over decades ago, replaced the hinges and installed drip lips (or flashing.) They also repaired four other windows that opened but were in need of assistance. And they tuned up a front entry door to my triplex building.

Very good experience with this company. It took their team a full week of work but boy, they did a great job. They even fixed some rotten wood as they were working on a window which was not part of the original deal. They really know what they are doing and the end result is fantastic. And they backup their results. We had some water leakage under two doors after their repairs and they came back and fixed the problem (which was not their fault because the shoe under the door was in bad condition). I highly recommend this company and will work with them in the future for the remainder of my windows,
Description of Work: Repaired about 11 windows that needed weather insulation, adjustments and repair so they could open and close smoothly. The windows are original from 1950 in wood. Also weather stripped and adjusted 3 doors.

I called the company they had someone come out within the week for an estimate of the service. This was at the end of June. When Norm Tuazo arrived we walked through the house and he reviewed each window explaining what was needed. Norm was professional in every way and and answered all my questions. When he provided me with the estimate he indicated that they were booked solid through Oct. I was hesitant in the having to wait that long but decided to go ahead. In the middle of October I contacted, the company and they scheduled the work to be started November 1st with an arrival time of 7:30 AM. At 7:30 Brian and his crew of 2 arrived and Brian walked though the house explaining what they were going to be doing to each window. Brian explained that with 3 of them performing the tasks they could be finished by noon or latter but definitely would be finished that day. At about 8 they started and each took a room to begin the process. When they completed a window they let me had me inspect the window and try it to make sure the work was acceptable. They were very professional and clean making sure that furniture and floors were covered and cleaned up after themselves leaving the house the same as they arrived. Brian then explained that there was a 2 yr warantee on the work. Before he left he explained what we needed to do to maintain the windows using lubricant and where it should b applied. He also explained that I should add a small bead of silicon at the bottom edge of those windows facing the weather to avoid water damage. They completed the work by 2PM. I was very pleased with the work done and with Brian and his crew. The wait was worth it.
Description of Work: They replaced the weatherstripping and hardware on 5 casement windows, 2 sliding doors and replaced the hand operator on one which had broken.

I got them to come do an estimate in August '11. By the time I closed in mid september, they were book til end of the year!!! Scheduled with them in January. They showed up exactly on time with a crew of five or six. Spent the week and did all the work. Highly professional. Crew chief was great. I changed the order a bit and we decided to do order three additional windows. They had to come back again in March cause that's how long it took to manufacture the three new windows. They did such a good job on my front door, I asked them to fix my other three exterior doors. Came back in total three times. Basically they are fantastic but very very expensive. This is not something you do to save money. I don't know what the cost of 22 new windows would be but I suspect less than $21,000. However, our windows are period correct and work perfectly. All hardware was repaired or replaced. If you can afford it, I can't recommend these guys enough.
Description of Work: Complete Restoration of 22 windows from a 1930s house, including 4 brand new window replacements. Complete restore, rebalance, rewire, install of hardware. Interior and Exterior. Plus rehang and weather stripping of front door. Plus removal of paint on Leaded windows and repair of hardware without damaging period leaded glass.

Our team, including Brian (our Foreman), Nick, Dustin, Stephan and Jeff, could not have been more professional. They were punctual each of the three full days required to do our job. They were very courteous. They cleaned up each and every mess they made along the way with a HEPA vacuum. They moved furniture, draperies and breakables, as needed, and put them all back in their places upon completion of each day's work. While they were each communicative about what they were doing and why, it was Brian's knowledge and expertise that really stood out. He was so thorough in his lay-person explanations that we were easily made to feel comfortable during the entire process. They attended to every detail and this is not an overstatement. They functioned superbly as a team with each member relying on Brian's skilled leadership to guide them through the day's tasks. We did change the scope ever so slightly during the job, incurring expected additional cost, by adding the two new sills (unforeseen damage) and more slide bolts. The team adjusted accordingly and seamlessly. All-in-all, we are very happy and honestly cannot find any fault with this company. We would hire them again and have already referred them to a friend. By hiring Window Restoration and Repair, we have wisely saved our 81-year-old windows as well as the architectural integrity of our Tudor-style home.
Description of Work: We are thrilled with the work that Window Restoration and Repair has done for us this past week beginning September 4, 2012. Back in April, 2012, we called and set up an appointment with Norm (Salesperson, Engineer) to give us an overview on their services and to quote our job. Our job consisted of restoring 29 in-swing casement windows on our 1931 English Tudor bungalow in Pasadena. He quoted the job, including replacing one window (over $1,000), performing tune-ups on all the other windows (lots of sanding, epoxy, squaring off, filling gaps, etc.), installing new sills on two windows (we added these later), installing slide bolts on 28 windows, and adding weatherstripping/copper drip lips to all windows. The quote came in at $11,000. Every reference whom we called or emailed was overwhelmingly positive, so we called at the end of June to book them and set up the team to do the work during the first week of September, 2012. (Important note: all finishing services, including priming and painting, will be done by another company at additional cost next week as Window Restoration and Repair does not provide these services.)

I cannot rave enough about how wonderful this job was. The crew of five highly-skilled craftsmen arrived on time at 7:30am and immediately got to work. They were professional, courteous, and friendly - they chatted with my three year-old like he was an old friend. They took the windows down, sanded them and the frames, filled them with epoxy when needed, and re-hung them so they fit in the frames like they were new. By 3:30pm they were done and gone. Five guys in the house and you would never know it. They cleaned up so well when they left I swear the house was cleaner than before they got here. If you are hesitant about spending the money, let me reassure you it is worth every penny. Our windows don't rattle anymore, they open and close with no effort, and best of all, there is no breeze coming through on a windy day. Those cold winter nights with towels stuck in the windows are a thing of the past! But my favourite improvement is the sound reduction - the weather stripping and truing made it so we hear almost no outside noise. Makes me wish I had done this years ago when I had napping babies!
Description of Work: 13 casement windows (from 1926) were "tuned-up" which includes truing them to the frame and weather stripping them. It was a continuation of a July 2011 job when we had 10 windows done. (We split the job in two to fit our budget). Our wood windows had minor weather damage - a rotted frame or two due to sun and rain - and were showing the usual signs of age: difficult to open and close, gaps that let the breezes through, rattling in the wind.

I called this company because I live nearby and had seen them in Angie's List. When I called to describe what I needed, the fellow on the phone was abrupt to the point of being surly, and informed me that they would not come out for such a small job (I understand that, just not the attitude). When I mentioned that I'd seen them in Angie's List, the attitude noticeably improved. We agreed that he would call me the following week to see if they might "fit me in" amongst larger jobs, particularly given my proximity. Never heard from them again. Would not use them for anything, given the lack of service orientation in how they operate. Even if they couldn't/wouldn't handle the job, a suggestion as to another approach and a little more courtesy would have been appreciated.

While very responsive on the phone, they led me to believe that they "RESTORE" windows. When they came out to give an estimate (arriving almost 45 minutes late after I left work 2 hours early to make sure I could meet their schedule!) I discovered that all they do is weatherstrip windows. They do not re-frame, re-glue, sand, re-glaze, or in any way "RESTORE" windows dispite what their company name says, or what was intimated in our phone conversation. On top of everything, their estimate for weatherstripping is not in line with the cost of materials and labor (at least based on my experience of having personally "RESTORED" windows in the past). If their estimate had been for "RESTORATION", then it would have been a fair price. I was very disappointed.

Response from Window Restoration And Repair
This letter is in response to this report of Window Restoration and Repair. First, we must apologize to the member for being late to his appointment. Although Norm called to give a heads-up about running late, and was within 1/2 hour of his appointment time, it is always our intention to be respectful of our customer’s time, as it is very valuable. Consequently, Norm is rarely late to customers and if he is a few minutes off schedule, he calls, as he did to the member to let him know. The member's description of what services we offer and the detail with which we restore and repair windows is not accurate. Weather-stripping is just a small part of the restoration we do to a window. It is true we are not painters and don’t pretend to be. There are numerous painting professionals who are proficient at stripping paint, glazing and painting. We partner with several of them to offer full service restoration. Our focus is on the structural integrity, fitting, mechanics, weather sealing and soundness of the windows themselves, as well as the accuracy of reproduction windows. We are mechanics and woodworkers. The following is what we do to a double hung window. This is similar to our work with casements and other wood windows as well. Example of Our Work: What We Do with Double Hung Windows: Tune-ups may require: * Removing both sashes from the opening, taking care not to break original molding. * Planing and sanding if necessary to relieve tightness from the excess paint. This is done only in areas where windows glide. * Installing a brand new 60 year rope, chain or balancer. * Reinforcing all loose joints in the sashes by doweling or re-pinning the tenons. Caulking may be needed to keep the joints from deteriorating any further. Epoxy restoration may be needed for some rotted joints. * Replacing parting beads that may be cracked, rotten or warped. * Re-weighing. There should be no falling down or floating up in a sash. It should be suspended in space. * Totally lubricating channels and pulleys, which should solve squeaking and sticking. * Realigning of locks and stops. Stops are vertical strips of wood, that are often held together by screws, which control the bottom sash. They should be perfectly lined up to allow the sash to have just enough clearance for free movement, but not too much. When they are totally closed, they should touch the top rail of the bottom sash to keep the assembly still. This will prevent rattling when the wind blows. * Installing weather-stripping if required or requested. This will increase energy efficiency. * When finding a wood rot issue, taking the time necessary to determine what caused the problem so we can and suggest what can be done to prevent it from happening again. * When sashes are irreparable because of dry rot or extensive termite damage, replicating and installing new sashes to identically match the old sashes and keeping the look of the house consistent. * To avoid window problems due to improper painting techniques, explaining the important points to be covered with your painter as well as providing a "do's and don'ts document for your painter" (good painters know these things and poor painters will now have a standard to live up to). Based on the frequent A rated reports we get, it is clearly important to us to make all our customers happy. We are sorry that the member wished we would provide other services than we do. However, we have to set the record straight regarding what we did and do offer as our services. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about the kind of work we do. Sincerely, Ed Sanchez Owner Window Restoration and Repair

I called Window Restoration & Repair, to get an estimate on restoring our wood windows. Over the years, expecially on the exterior of the home, the wood framing around the window and french doors, have been craking and the paint has been peeling. Norm came out within a few days, checked the windows, which are in working condition, and recommended that I purchase some bees wax and apply to the sliding part of the windows to make it a bit smoother when opening and closing them. He explained that his company is more of a mechanical window repair, so if I could not open and close the windows he would be my guy. He did tell me that my windows were in good condition, and also not to let anyone talk me into replacing them, since I had actual wood windows in working condition. They just needed a makeover, and he made sure to let me know that epoxy should be used instead of wood bondo. He reffered me to a painter who does this kind of work. I actually had a contractor come out about a week before for some other work needed to be done inside the home, and he recommended that all windows be replaced. When Norm came to our home I was not sure if we should or should not replace the windows. After talking to Norm, I have no doubt that he is very honest, and cares about his customers. He will not sell you something you do not need!!!!

Our house was built around 1955, and it has settled on its foundation in the succeeding years. This normal settling, combined with a serious earthquake in 1987 and the installation of a number of decorative leaded glass glazing treatments in the mid-nineties, caused six of our unpainted and carefully maintained alumimum window frames to fall out of square with their glazing casements. The result was sticking windows that could not be opened and closed without a helper standing in the flower beds. In 2011 we undertook a general refurbishment of the house's interior spaces. During planning for the refurbishment, we evaluated the need case for removal and replacement of all of the windows in the house, and decided that the windows we had in place were part of the house's overall character and worth keeping. That meant that attention needed to be paid to the opening and closing problems that we had with some of the windows. An ad from the company in the back of the Angie's list magazine seemed to describe some of the services we were looking for, so we placed a call to the company. An appointment was made and a sales call and evaluation was scheduled. The salesperson was on time and informative. During the sales call we learned that the company would not address some of our interior appearance restoration concerns, but that their mechanical repair services were exactly what we were looking for to fix our sticking problems. We felt that the quoted price was somewhat high, but that because most people replace their windows rather than repair them, our options for finding another experienced provider for the repair services we needed were limited. The company's bid was accepted and the service call was scheduled for two months in the future. In fact, we got a call from the company about two weeks later. Our job ticket had been evaluated and the company had concluded that the job could be done by a crew of two in about a day's time. Such a crew was going to become available in two days. Were we interested in having our work completed early? Of course we were. The crew, when they arrived, worked carefully, cleanly and professionally. The job was completed in about six hours. The repaired windows are working well, and we are satisfied.
Description of Work: The company restored six extruded aluminum casement window frames to full functionality. Prior to service, the windows were sticking in their frames and difficult to open and close. The service involved different degrees of material removal by grinding in place, lubrication with white grease, and shimming with washers.

Norm Tuazon from Window Restoration & Repair came over this morning to look at my windows--I have a lot of them and except for one they all need to be replaced! Window Restoration & Repair does not replace windows they only repair them. Norm is one of the most straight-forward, knowledgeable --he also has a great attitude--salesperson to ever visit our house. He spent considerable time looking carefully at all the windows. You can tell this company is very ethical. When I first called them last week Ed, one of the owners, called me back right away. Ed, like Norm is obviously very experienced and has a great sense of humor. The day before the appointment-yesterday-Maria called me to confirm. Maria is also very civilized. So, while the news Norm gave me are not exactly good, I have to say that I am delighted to have found Window Restoration & Repair. Gives you renewed faith in the future of American businesses who invest in expertise & great customer relations.

I contacted the provider by email asking if they did window replacement as well as window restoration becasue my first project was to replace an old aluminum window in my garage with a wood window. He repsonded right away asking me to email him a photo of what I needed replaced. I took a picture thatevening ,a nd emailed it to him the next morning. I never heard from him again.
Description of Work: I have a home built in 1938 in the historic district, so all wood windows. I would have liked to have services performed on several windows, but once I made the initial contact and emailed a photo of one of the windows I needed replaced I never heard back from the company.

I found Window Restoration & Repair through Angie's List and was delighted that there was a company that restores/repairs old windows. They seem to be one of the only companies in the area that does what they do. It is one of the things that I enjoy about my old home - the character and charm of these original 90 year old windows. I had an initial meeting with Norm who came over to give me an estimate. I appreciated that he suggested things like salvaging 1 panel from 2 separate windows (the other panels had expensive repairs) to make 1 window and replacing the 2nd with a replica window. I received an estimate via email with a breakdown of all the individual costs per window (which I liked). Their service is not cheap but compared to replacing all the windows with wood equivalents would be much more. They are in high demand, so they must be scheduled months in advance. So I scheduled them to do the work in January. On the day of the job, Brian (the foreman) introduced himself and had me show him all the windows. He then formulated a plan for the day based on my input and the needs of the job. I enjoyed that he consulted me and included me in the plan. He also kept me in the loop about potential issues and decisions that I might need to make. All the technicians were great (Caesar,Nick,Stephan,Jason (1 day),Jeff (1 day)), very skilled and professional. I appreciated that they all took pride in their work. The only real issue we had was one of the replica windows was the wrong type of window for the original frame. It was assessed to be a double hung but really was a casement. The casement added additional cost to the project. I believe we came to a fair agreement in that we split the cost of the difference in windows (about $200). Norm managed to get the replica ready to be installed on the second day. I'm glad we got the window in time to get the job completed in the two days. They finished the work on the second day and cleaned up the mess. I'm very happy with the results. Although it was expensive, I feel like they did a great job - very skilled, professional, and detail oriented. Additionally, I was very interested in how they went about restoring the windows, so I did a lot of observing and asking lots of questions. All the technicians were very receptive and helpful - much appreciated.
Description of Work: Window Restoration & Repair restored/repaired 16 windows (4 Casement, 12 Double Hung) and installed new replica windows (4 Casement, 1 Double Hung) in my 1924 Burbank home. This job took 2 days to complete (approximately 8 hours each). Each day there were 5 specialists (1 foreman, 4 technicians). For the windows they restored, it consisted of removing all windows, sanding, repairing/adjusting the sliding mechanism (sash/pulley/weight or balancer), putting it all back together and fine tuning it. I'm really simplifying the process: it is labor intensive, and requires a lot of attention to detail. For the new replica windows, it required the same process without the sanding. I had new locks and weather stripping installed on all the windows. I had new hinges installed on a pair of the Casement windows. For the job, they covered all areas that would be exposed to dust/debris and at the end (of each day & the job) they cleaned it all up, including vacuuming around the working areas. They moved any items they needed in order to work around the windows (I tried to clear a lot of that myself).

i gutted a rental unit 5 years ago. For some reason, the workmen removed the steel window handles and locks and replaced them with Home Depot hardware that never worked. For 5 years I've had several window people look at them and have tried to find the parts on my own with no success. Window Restoration came out and knew exactly what I needed and gave me a bid. By the time I was able to schedule them to come out and do the job, I had eliminated 3 or 4 windows that I decided I could live with. They had no problem with that and were able to use parts that I had accumulated that saved me even more money! If a window didn't need the paint scraped, they didn't do it and gave me a discount. 3 guys worked non stop and checked with me every step of the way.

Everything about our experience with Ed Sanchez and his team at Window Restoration and Repair was very positive. Ed came out to the house for the estimate and carefully walked through the procedures that would be necessary to return our casement windows to their original working condition. On the day of the work, the crew arrived on time and didn't waste any time getting started. As they moved through the house, working from window to window, they carefully moved furniture and draped plastic over furniture and exterior landscaping to ensure that paint chips didn't end up everywhere. The guys were highly professional and did terrific work. The windows now work beautifully.

I was extremely pleased that I found someone who really cared about handling my problem. the workmen did a great job and were very professional and helpful.
Description of Work: I have 10 windows original to the house (built in 1948) which are so unique that it took Ed Sanchez and his men to fix them. They are framed and installed in solid metal and are not standard sizes. No one else was able to deal with the fact that they were no longer easily opened nor closed. The men scraped all the paint off the windows, frames, inside working parts, etc., so that they could again be opened. Although we had to wait several months to be scheduled (and we are more than 50 miles away), it was well worth the wait. Absolutely no one else was interested in working on this project.

The guys that came to restore my windows were just great - they were here on time, they were pleasant and once they got down to the work they were amazing. They work efficiently and very well together. Everything went according to plan. They also fixed my front door which was very hard to close most of the time due to the shifting of the house depending on how much rain we get or don't get. I have had several people tell me there is just no solution. These guys said there was, and my door works beautifully now. I had 8 windows restored and it has made such a difference! It so nice to be able to open the top and/or the bottom of my double hung windows. We have the perfect weather to take advantage of this great feature. They also replaced the glass in two of the windows that were broken. When they were done, they cleaned up everything very well and even moved my furniture back in place which I didn't expect them to do. They are confident in what they do and they take pride in their work and they should - they know what they're doing and they do it very, very well.
Description of Work: I had eight windows restored (double hung windows) (house built in 1937) and had my front door fixed, so that they open & close effortlessly.
