From the one meeting I had with Mark, he seemed very professional and knowledgeable in his craft. He was conscientious and asked good questions so as to gain a better understanding of what I needed done to my home. The problem for me became the time it took to receive an estimate and get a firm start date. I began to feel during this process that perhaps my project wasn't a priority, again, mainly based on the time it took for me to get an actual estimate. It was mainly for that reason that I did not use this service provider.
Description of Work: Mark came to the home on 8/22/2015 and was professional and knowledgeable. He was on time and courteous. He took detailed notes and asked questions related to the project. Mark spent about an hour going over details and reported to me that he would have an estimate to me by the middle of the following week, which would have been 8/26/2015. On 8/29/2015, I received an email regarding a question about hard wood flooring to which I responded immediately. A week after that I received an estimate. There was an error on the estimate that I asked be corrected and also asked for Mark to take out an item we had initially agreed to put in the project. I had telephoned Mark a few times and emailed him as well, as I needed the work to start as soon as possible. Approximately two weeks later (and over 3 weeks since we initially met) I received the revised estimate. By that time, I was forced to find another contractor to work on my project.

Mostly good, some not so good. I thought about this review for sometime. I wish I could have rated the contractor higher, but for fairness sake, I believe the ratings reflect the "overall" work and price. We accepted the bid for the reasons; the contractor seemed very knowledgable and professional, even though I, not my wife, thought the bid a little high. The contractor started off very good and my wife and I were very pleased with all aspects of the job and personnel. As the job went on and the price went up, some of the professionalism we enjoyed went down as with some of the quality, it is my understanding, from the contractor, this downward trend and upward price was mostly do to a subcontractor and not the general.I will suggest to someone hiring any contractor, is to ask for a detailed line item bid, as not to be left open for questionable increases with a reasonable time table for completion, Example; if the bid included replacing a bathroom fixture ;or code compliance work, and that was not done or not necessary, it can be readily identified and price adjusted, also if something is added it can also be adjusted more fairly, again this partially do to the subcontractor. I think I would have been more satisfied if I had such a bid to work with instead paying for a catchall bid.I will ;say I was not satisfied, as a whole, with the job(s) and mostly the price and time to complete. Some time delays were acceptable, i.e., another job for a disabled client was completely understandable and I agreed to the delay. Some extra costs were also acceptable, but again, vague, and some I felt were not justified, but I paid as it is my responsibility. ;By the way the above cost paid to contractor does not include tile and fixture costs. I stated I would use this contractor again but with the aforementioned changes.

Response from Mark C Petersen Residential Remodeling
I agree with some of the items in [member name removed]'s review and disagree with others. What started the additions to the price was a major change to the tile layout in the first of 2 bathrooms I remodeled. When I got the price from my tile contractor I thought it to be much too high & I negotiated it down & told the client as much. All went well (I thought) until the 2nd bathroom when for some unknown reason the tile installer didn't get the walls in a shower exactly plumb & straight. I saw it & the client saw it. We had a lengthy discussion about the problem & I offered multiple times to have the tile taken out & the problem fixed. Each time I offered the client declined. I don't know why, it would not have been a problem. As a result of all of this, the client wasn't 100% happy with the tile job (I completely agree on that). The other result is I no longer use that particular tile contractor any longer. He had done work for me for years & years but won't in the future. I really like the client & his wife, they are really nice people. It's a shame something like this had to happen. I'm at a loss as to why they didn't want me to have the tile contractor fix his mistake. I'm happy to hear, however, that the clients would want me back in the future to do additional work for them. I would be my pleasure. Mark Petersen

He was very good. The tiling and flooring are excellent. They reduced all of our mold and installed a very nice vinyl flooring with a concrete subfloor. We have a retiled showered, a new vanity, a new window and wall, repair and replacement of drains in the tub, a brand new tub, and they installed an electrical vent to take care of any future excess moisture. They were extremely honest about what the price would be and how long the job would take. The overall finished look of the job looks more amazing than we had expected. We are very happy with the results. He was an excellent recommendation and they even stayed on schedule with a rain storm. I was very impressed.

Mark and his team were very prompt. Every day they said they would be there they would be there at 7am. They kept us informed through the process. They tried to keep the mess to a minimum. They took there time but the quality is very good. Mark was very helpful in helping us pick out tiles and paint. He guided us as we made decisions. The only other trades that came in was tile. Everything else was done by mark and his small team of two other workers. After everything was completed we had some issues. They were handled very promptly and without question.

I absolutely love my new kitchen and laundry room, customized to my wishes by Mark, and his team. The craftsmanship and attention to detail was superb. They treated my home as they would their own. They advised on my design choices to help ensure that I would be satisfied with both the functionality and aesthetics of the final product. They stayed focused on the job the entire time, doing the majority of the work themselves with only a few subcontractors. Mark remained responsive to the couple of minor items that popped up after formal completion of the work, addressing them completely. The only quibble we had was with the timeline; the job that was quoted at 6-8 weeks and contracted for 2 months took a full 3 months to complete. I understand this is par for the course with major renovation jobs, but was the one deviation from the exceptional excellence in other respects of the project. We are of course happy that no sacrifices were made to quality in the name of timeliness. I would happily hire Mark again for any home renovation.

We are SO pleased with the out come. Mark went above and beyond to accommodate our wish list and last minute new ideas and and quot;add-onsand quot;. Mark also fixed a portion of a damaged garage wall to allow the entry door to lineup and close properly without us asking (this would have impacted the the finished look of kitchen if he had NOT done that). Mark was always prompt each morning at the designated time of arrival and always left our home clean and orderly during construction. Plastic walls were put up to separate construction area from rest of house for dust control. Mark was very conscientious and understood our concerns for any subcontractors access to our home. All work was dome with the highest level of perfection by Mark and his team. If we had questions he answered them immediately. Several situations came up that would have cost a lot more in labor /redesign strategy but Mark and his team had wonderful suggestions that made everything come together perfectly for the final look! Whenever had a worry or concern about them working in our home while we were both artwork. (LOL,and not one butt crack was ever revealed!!) THANK YOU MARK AND SCOTT for everything!!!! Would LOVE to share the before and after photos. Mark and Scott designed our new kitchen and deserve full credit for all details.
Description of Work: Removed a wall and opened three rooms into one, creating open concept kitchen/dining area. Brought three different ceiling heights to one level. Removed tile and carpeting. Replaced with Hardwood floors throughout. Gutted kitchen /redesigned custom layout to beautifully enhance the new space. Installed granite on counter and new island. Custom built and stained new cabinets to our specific color choices and style. Full glass/granite tile on backsplash and wrapped column wall for focal point for new slide-in range hood/vent on island. Added under cabinet lighting, soft-close drawers and cabinet doors throughout. Added several can lights for optional lighting by sections with dimmers and multiple switch locations.

After realizing a faulty shower pan mandated a bathroom reno down to the floorboards, we searched endlessly for a contractor. We could not have been more happy with our eventual selection of Mark Petersen. Mark and his partner Scott were extremely accommodating and professional from day one. We were given a contract and estimate at the outset and though our final tally ended up being a couple thousand more, it was completely expected given requested upgrades and necessary repairs discovered during demo. Mark had us select, order and pickup all materials except the shower doors. This ended up being a good thing to keep the process moving in a timely fashion. He recommended suppliers when needed. Mark always kept us informed and if any issues arose, such as completely rotted out studs, he made it a point to have us see the damage and explain the needed improvements before they were made. They work early (7 am) but did their best to keep noise to a minimum. They were always willing to respond to questions and incredibly considerate of our home, laying out protective material to keep rooms and hallways clean plus sweeping and vacuuming every single day. If cleanliness is as important to you as it is to me, you won't be disappointed. I found Mark and Scott to be efficient, the entire project took about six weeks but in all honesty, about two of those weeks could be attributed to owner delays (vacation and indecision on materials). When they discovered that the countertop we ordered wasn't the appropriate size, they worked around it, seamlessly incorporating it into the existing space. To account for this, we ended up having Scott design and build a new vanity cabinet to fit the room/countertop (a large part of the additional cost). It looks beautiful and is perfectly functional. I should add that other issues arose during the bathroom reno, issues in other rooms of our decades old, oddly improved home. Mark corrected those issues, at times with no additional cost (a leaking toilet in another bathroom for example). Having contractors work on your home, especially while you're not present, can be a nerve-wracking experience, but the whole process could not have gone more smoothly and we could not be happier. Mark and Scott did all of the work except for laying the tile (their subs were nice and accommodating though they didn't always see eye to eye), painting (we did that) and the installation of the shower doors. As proof that Scott takes great pride in his work, he wasn't happy with the original hinge installation and called the glass company back in for a second day to redo the job. Though it's small, our bathroom is now beautiful, fully operational and frankly, it feels like a hotel bathroom, a bit of a respite in the midst of busy days. We delayed our renovation for nearly a year while stockpiling funds and Mark's work has been worth every penny. Count us as extremely satisfied customers willing to vouch for their work without hesitation.

The guys were nice and responsive and certainly skilled at home repairs. The repairs were done to our satisfaction, but we noticed early on that Mark and his guys were always talking about how much more complicated all the repairs were. They were setting us up for a huge increase in the amount that we had agreed to for the job - almost a third more than we had contracted for. At the end of the job when they presented us with the last bill, they noted that the bedroom walls had needed three coats of paint and that meant they had to spend more time. They also had added to the bill a whole lot of little things but at a huge cost which they hadn't run by us first. I wouldn't say the work was first class but it was adequate. If anyone hires them, be very clear ahead of time exactly how much things are going to cost and don't let them work in any little extras that they can then sock you with a big bill for later.
Description of Work: Our house was a foreclosure property and so there were a ton of little things that needed doing and then some big things. The upstairs bedrooms needed the drywall replaced and then painted, they built a storage area for us in the garage, the bathroom sink needed to be reseated, the living room sunken floor needed to be raised, we needed shelves built in the garage, and several other small jobs like that.

Response from Mark C Petersen Residential Remodeling
The [member name removed] purchased a home that not only was a foreclosure, it was also apparently the previous owners personal project. A lot of the rooms had signs of very poor previous remodeling work. Some of the work, as it turned out was wrong to the point of being dangerous. All of the previous electrical work was bordering on being a fire hazard. The previous plumbing work was done with very substandard materials. To add insult to injury, the home's basic systems had not been maintained. The main plumbing drain from the kitchen sink was completely clogged. The electrical panel was rusted out. I could go on & on, but I believe it's clear what a mess the house was. The [member name removed] did have a wish list of items they wanted accomplished. All of these items needed to be completed so they could move in vey quickly. There was a very short time limit, not allowing for problems or surprises. To add to the obstacles, Mrs. [member name removed] was going out of town for nearly the entire time of the remodel & wasn't easily available. She said her husband would be easily reached for questions, etc. but as it turned out, he was difficult to reach also. Every item to be completed on their list, almost without exception, involved finding problems hidden from view until demolition. To put it very bluntly, the house they bought is a lemon. Not built poorly from new, but ruined by previous work done on the house. To achieve their project goals, many, many more steps had to be taken to repair the problems. We did have discussion concerning this but it seemed not to matter to her. When I did present a final bill, there was a substantial increase in the price, but that should not have come as a huge surprise as the problems were mentioned in the beginning when she was still in town. We discussed the poor condition of the house. This was not some kind of set up & I'm completely offended that she thinks so. I don't believe she is very happy at all to have found out what kind of condition the house was really in. They may not have purchased it. To answer specifically the paint issue - the price in the contract involved painting with neutral colors to easily cover existing colors. The homeowners supplied the paint, & when it was brought to us it was bright, dark colors. This is much harder to cover with. Multiple coats were necessary, much more than normal. When I mentioned this & eventually tried to bill for the additional work she didn't want to hear about it. As it turned out, we did settle on a compromise as far as the final bill but I don't think either one of us was completely happy. To this I have advice for potential homeowners. Please, please, hire a competent home inspector before you buy. You really need to know what you are getting into. You won't be able to see hidden problems, but you will be able to judge more closely the condition of your potential home. If the obvious looks questionable, the hidden is probably much worse. Also, please understand that if problems or potential problems are being mentioned it's for good reason. It could very well be a safety issue & I cannot not mention these things.

When Mark found out we were accepting other bids it was a turn off for him. He never bid our kitchen stating that he had a much bigger project but waited about 10 days to do so. During the measurement of the kitchen he was extremely cocky. He basically wasted our time and delayed all project.

Response from Mark C Petersen Residential Remodeling
In order to respond to this review, it's best that I first describe what happens when I visit the jobs. My bus. partner Scott & I always go to the first visit together. One of us takes pictures & the other takes measurements. We are always friendly & try to keep things light but business-like. We also go into these visits with a basic understanding that we are only one of multiple contractors bidding. This is normal & commonly known. Our appointment with the [member name removed] was on 4/24/2014. On this job, we met the [member name removed] & they were both friendly & things went well. They were not living in the house yet & another contractor was working there. As we were finishing up, I asked (as I always do) about their time frame. They stated that they wanted to be moved in by June. I indicated there could be a potential scheduling conflict if another job (previously bid, but getting financing) came through first. This is always talked about on all of the first visits. Scott & I actually, really, physically work on these jobs. I don't have dozens of employees to run multiple jobs simultaneously. In order for me to be fair to all potential clients as far as calendar scheduling, I must be fair to all. If that means I don't get a project, then that's the way it is. Neither Scott, nor I have ever been described as cocky. As a matter of fact we as usually pretty self-deprecating with our humor. I don't understand that comment whatsoever. It doesn't describe us at all. Before we left the [member name removed], I let them know I would have a proposal to them in about a week. I got an email address from them to send them a proposal. This is normal for me, as I am a smaller business & actually work in the homes. This gives me a little time. Everything seemed to go very well in the house & everyone got along fine. As we left I reminded them of the proposal time frame & we were on our way. On the morning of 5/1/2014 (one week, not 10 days later), I was contacted by the other client with the go-ahead to start immediately. That made it impossible to accept the [member name removed] project with their time limitations. I had already finished the [member name removed] proposal & was emailing it to them that afternoon until the other events transpired. Instead, I emailed the the [member name removed] & explained the scheduling conflict & had to remove myself from consideration on their project. [member name removed] sent me a friendly email thanking me for letting him know. He also asked if I had a referral for another contractor. I emailed him back stating no, I didn't, but he should check further on Angie's List. I wished him good luck with his project & told him I hoped it turned out well. (I can post these emails if necessary). This was the last contact I had with the [member name removed], until I saw what I took to be a very baffling review. The review was completely contradictory to the entire process that was our experience. [member name removed] timeline doesn't fit what happened (notice that his review is dated 5/2/2014 - 8 days after the visit) & nothing happened in their home to indicate any type of problem. Having fellow contractors bid on this project is a non issue. This is always the case. I even encourage the potential clients to get multiple bids. The whole experience is baffling. I really don't know what else to say. I encourage people to look at my reviews & get a real understanding of how I conduct myself on these visits & while working in the homes.

Mark and Scott were very professional. They had to contend with old, not to code plumbing and also issues with the plumbing accessories of the new clawfoot tub. The wainscoting really added the original look to our Craftsman bungalow. They were both very responsive via phone or text and always kept us in the loop when circumstances changed. My wife and i would not hesitate to use their services again, we just need to save up again!

They went above and beyond once the tile was down and the greenboard (?) came down and the condition of the studs was revealed, same as when the bath tub came out and you could see the damage beneath the tub. The price was fair, the work was as fast as it could be when the shower and the floor both had to be retiled, the new custom window is perfect and it's great to have a tub/shower that doesn't s*** water everytime someone bathes. They were always on time, very professional, and really willing to work with me. We want them to do more work for us at our house!

July 30th was the date of the final invoice - May 26th was the date of the final proposal. In between those dates, I acquired an awesome kitchen. This review is about a year after the fact and I think that, because I've had a year to get over it, is more accurate than had I immediately written a review. Truth be told, it really wouldn't be any different. My kitchen was truly horrible but I was hesitant to have it redone do to horror stories I had heard from other people about remodeling jobs. Based on the great reviews on Angie's List for Mark C. Petersen, we took the leap and contracted with Mark to fix our hideous kitchen. Mark and Scott do most of the remodeling themselves so you don't have to worry about strange people wandering around in your house. The few subs they use have been fully vetted by them and Mark is there to oversee what they are doing. The work started on time and I was appraised daily of the status the job and any weird things that had happened. Daily, the entire area they moved across (the kitchen, dining room, living room and stairway to downstairs) was vacuumed. Anytime anything messy was being done, they put up plastic sheeting to minimize the fallout. All in all, they worked as though they had to live here. And we appreciated that because we did have to live here though it. they only work on one job at a time so you have all their attention. I don't know what else to say except that almost one year later, we are still in love with our kitchen that Mark C. Petersen brought to life. The only downside is that we may never be able to move because we love our kitchen so much!
Description of Work: Demo kitchen and lights in kitchen, install new lights in kitchen, install new all wood cabinets, install super duper custom cabinets in one wall, add new all wood cabinets where there were none. Install baseboard in kitchen, dining room and living room, rebuilt attic entrance, moved the range gas line, repaired range hood ducting, installed smoke and CO detectors install granite countertop and tile backsplash, texture and paint. Diagnosed and fixed an extraordinarily odd (and potentially dangerous) electrical problem brought to light by the kitchen outlets.

Mark's company repaired and remodeled a home originally built in the 1940's. We received 3 proposals from licensed contractors and chose Mark's company mainly for his professionalism. He did a thorough inspection of the house, asked many questions and made many recommendations. The proposal was very thorough, itemized and the pricing was very fair. The work was started promptly as promised and completed in a timely fashion. Mark's communication regarding the project was excellent. All of the work was done to state and local codes and signed off by inspectors. The quality of the work done is excellent.

Contractor did not return messages.
Description of Work: I left a message thru Angies List and phoned, but I have not received any response. I called and left message to have a laundry area in my condominium expanded to receive full sized washer and dryer to replace old, noisy and tiny stacked washer/dryer unit. I actually ran into a contractor at my condominium complex and he has submitted plans and estimate for work, and since I met him in the condo complex doing work, association should be familiar with him.I understand contractors may be busy with remodel jobs for banks for repo or foreclosed homes, but it should still be professional courtesy to return messages.

I received the member's phone message and returned the call with my own message stating that I was not interested in bidding on his job. I do not ignore any messages I receive. Where the return message was missed I have no idea.

He was very nice on the phone and brought 1 other person with him. While they here, he crawled under the house to check it out. Then he came out and told me that he doesn't do work under the house and he only does work in the house. I had already explained to him that work needed to be done underneath the house. I didn't drive 200 miles only to have him tell me that he can't do the work. He was nice enough to drive out, however, he should have told me up front that he can't do work under the house.
Description of Work: I drove out to meet him to have him give me a price on repairing leaks in my shower and kitchen and the damage that was caused to the wood. I had a termite guy tell me there were leaks under the house. Mr. Peterson drove out to assess the situation.

Response from Mark C Petersen Residential Remodeling
There was an apparent misunderstanding between the customer and myself regarding what needed to be done and what I was able to do on short notice. The under house damage was very extensive not only concerning the leaking shower which I was told about, but a currently still being used, badly leaking kitchen drain which was leaking raw sewage at every use. Both areas had, in my opinion, been leaking for at least a couple of years, and there were 4-5 inch deep pools of sewage sitting under the house. This in my opinion constituted an emergency situation and I told the customer this and also told her it needed immediate attention being a rental house and the tenants were well within their rights to demand being put up in a hotel etc. if they chose to do so. I was not at that time able to immediately remedy the situation being fully involved in another project and told the customer this. I also told her that I could not help her for at least a couple of weeks. If this had been a minor problem I would not have hesitated to help, but this would require me to leave my other job and spend a considerable amount of time fixing the problem and related damage which had left the shower completely unusable and the kitchen also should not have been used at all in it's present condition. The person who came with me had made a comment about only working in the rooms themselves and not under the house, but that is absolutely not correct and I'm as baffled as the customer about that statement- I work under houses all the time. Be that as it may I explained to her that the damage was considerably worse than could have been anticipated and that she had a serious health hazard to deal with and that I could not immediately deal with this emergency situation, she needed a plumber. I don't blame her for being upset at the bad news about her rental house, how extensive the damage actually was, that she would have to find someone else, and the comment made by my helper.. which still baffles me.

The Project began promptly and ended on schedule and within budget. Each day began with outlining work to be performed and at day's completion job site was left as clean as possible. Included all debris removal. Work was coordinated and scheduled with other subcontractors to complete tiling, stone counter installations and painting without any impacts to schedule. Mark and Scott made the remodel experience as pleasant as possible with minimal disruption to the household. Their professionalism and attention to detail caught several significant existing problems that were easily correctable at the time. Mark Petersen proves that quality never has to be compromised.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel included electrical upgrade, copper re-plumbing, correct existing electrical miss-wiring, modify tub enclosure all fixtures and cabinetry installations Other upgrades besides bathroom included removal and replacement of 20' Aluminum sliding glass doors with updated 6' French Doors. Replacement included exterior wall re-framing, plaster and re-stucco. Also Sub-floor repair (joists and sub-floor) due to termite destruction. Retrofitted all interior doors with updated 6 raised panel style.

The project was a dream enterprise. Mark and Scott clearly defined what they would do, left the site clean and impeccable each day, rebuilt a number of problem areas they discovered during the demo process and explained each change to us and the reason for it. We were not constantly hit with added dollar change orders. They performed additional small services as part of the project that improved our overall living area without being asked. The quality of the work was exceptional. They do most of their own demolition, plumbing, electrical and cabinetry and I never had to worry about the quality of the product. They obtained the needed permits, passed inspection and were just exceptional to have in our home. We found their costs to be reasonable for what was provided and we were not constantly nickeled and dimed during the project as so often happens. They were happy to research and be prepared for requests we made. They took into account things we had no idea were an issue. Our main bathroom remodel was on our second floor and our carpeting and floors were protected and emerged intact. We cannot say enough good things about our experience. This is three projects we have done with them. At least talk to them about your project. You will not regret it.
Description of Work: They remodeled one bathroom for us and then we retained them to another bathroom in our home. They removed a fiberglass tub/shower unit, replaced a commode, refinished the vanity, removed the existing tile and re-tiled the floor, added a granite top to the vanity and then created a new bath shower combination with tile and border less glass doors. Our children had used this bath from birth through their college years and it had seen hard use. We wanted a more genteel room that fit its new use as a guest bathroom. After the completion of the first project, we retained Mark and Scott to remodel a half bath that connects to our backyard and pool. They replaced the commode, built an entirely new vanity and retiled the floor. Our sixty year old tile was replaced with granite counters, a beautiful vanity and an unusual and very functional sink. This room was an odd size and since it is constructed of cinder block, moving plumbing and electrical was not an option.

They did exactly what they promised in the time frame that was agreed upon. They took on an extra task in installing patio speakers and did a wonderful job. These gentlemen work in the way that you would hope everyone would. First quality, clear explanations of what they are doing and they clean everything every day. Our house did not get tracked up with dust or left with a mess at the end of each day.
Description of Work: We had a custom bookcase built out of oak 20 years ago in a remodel. At the time, a 35 inch TV with its tube was the height of technology. We wanted to add a flat screen TV. This necessitated reconfiguring the entire bookcase unit. Mark and cabinet specialist Scott knew exactly what to do. They had us select a TV first and then designed an opening to accommodate a 46 inch Sony flat screen. In addition, they incorporated a new Bose sound system and rehung the cabinet doors. The new finish is an exact match to the old material (cabinet doors and shelves) remaining on the bottom. They installed all the electronics, rehung the cabinet doors with hidden hinges and created a very modern and functional entertainment center for us. They came highly recommended from a designer we respect. We liked them so much that they are redoing a bathroom for us currently. They are extremely thorough, neat in your house and anticipate items before you might. We can not recommend them highly enough.
