So, I called him again (normallly I wouldn't do this) and he apologized, set a date for the next day then NEVER SHOWED! I use this site to avoid such contractors and I'm saddened to find one right here, and with a good rep as well. Get it together, Dan!

Description of Work: My elderly neighbor (whom I assist) needed a complete updated electrical box with new breakers and fuses for her home. It was completely redone and upgraded. There was an electrician and his assistant that performed the work.

 + -1 moreThe crew is young and fairly inexperienced but Dan is very friendly and competent. He had a bit of difficulty motivating his crew. They did an excellent job. Their crew had very good workmanship when they where able to get the things done. The project went almost over a month. I paid for labor but I covered all the materials myself. I would hire them for smaller projects only.

Description of Work: Dan came to estimate interior paint, repair of a cabinet and replacing roof tiles. He said he would email me with the estitmates that evening. He didn't. I called and left and message, but there was no response. He never gave me any estimates.

 + -1 moreBefore calling Dan I received estimates to do this work: $1050, 1150 and $1175. I was shocked that water heaters could cost so much. I was told by one of the companies that it is difficult finding a 30 gallon and that cost way more than 40 gallon ones. Seas told me the same thing and their 30 gallons were not approved by the state of CA. One of the plumbers who came out to the house to give an estimate said that a 40 gallon water heater would never fit in the space provided. I remembered seeing HandyDan mentioned in the section "pages of happiness" in your Nov 2008 magazine, which I was just reading a couple of days before, and called him. He anwered the phone immediately, no answering machine, secretary or cell phone message center. He told me the actual cost of the water heater and said it would be between $800-900 but no more than $900 without even going to the house. His men were just finishing another job and was able to go by, check it out and confirm the estimate. They put in a 38 gallon from Home Depot the next day. (Dan said that Home Depot also had 30 gallons, so it apparently was not difficult to find one). I told Dan that I was looking for a good honest plumber and I think I had just found one. The tenants were very happy to receive a larger tank and I was very happy with the service and price. Thank you Deborah Legawiec for the referral!!!!

 + 1 moreProfessional and pleasant over the phone. Estimate guys they sent were wicked late, like an hour and a half from the original appointment time BUT I received phone calls to keep me informed. The gentlemen were nice. They didn't mind talking to us and answering questions. They were a little unorganized. I was really pleased with the prices they were giving me verbally. I wasnt given any formal estimate or quote during the visit but I was promised one within the next business day. I received a phone call and e-mail a week or so later that they had more questions. By that time I had already hired someone else. I'm cutting them a little slack here though because it was during the holidays, between Christmas and New Years, when we all have a lot going on. While nicer than most of the guys I had bidding that week, I eventually decided against them because of their follow-through...and the general sense that the lack of organization would rear its ugly head again. This fear is not what I want when I'm looking to hire somone to replace the face of my house.
Description of Work: I had them come out to do estimates on a some minor home repairs, and two major projects(siding replacement and deck repair).

I know that this company is very busy, and expected it would take a couple of months before they could start, but they cleared some time for me because they knew I was hoping to have it done before the holidays. Once they started, they were there every day as promised and kept up a steady pace, often working late into the evening to get things done. I work all day so I'm not there to supervise, but Dan comes in and checks the work. He found things that I hadn't even noticed and made sure that the crew came back and took care of everything. They finished up the night before Thanksgiving - I was doing the final tile grouting at 11PM. The whole thing took only a couple of weeks, which was amazing. They were great about letting me do some of the stuff myself to save money (like the grouting and painting), and helping me learn how, since I have no experience with this kind of stuff. So, for what I paid, I feel like I got a great job done in record time by really nice guys, and for a price that was more than fair. I really can't ask for better than that, and I'm thrilled with how it all looks.
Description of Work: Face lift for a very dated kitchen - house was built in 1950 and a lot of the fixtures were from about 1970. It had hideous fluorescent lighting that made the whole room look like a crime scene, a vinyl floor that was starting to come up, countertops that were dark brown fake wood grain...in other words, UGH-LY!!! Dan and his crew took out all the old stuff and installed new recessed lighting and a chandelier, all with dimmer switches, and also illuminated a built-in shelf that had no lighting before. That made a huge difference. They put in a white tile countertop and backsplash with those 4x4 ceramic tiles - very inexpensive and they came out great; the whole room is light and bright now, instead of dingy and dark. They put in a black and white checkerboard floor that I love - I always wanted one and it's in keeping with the age and style of the house. The footprint of the kitchen didn't change, and we didn't touch the cabinets (except to paint). It's amazing what a huge difference it made just doing some cosmetic things - Dan had some great ideas, and I feel like in the end I got a lot more than my money's worth. He really understands about how to work within a budget, and all of the guys on his crew are great and a pleasure to have around.

I picked up a lot of the stuff on my own and brought it home, but Dan and his crew were great about running over to the home improvement store and getting all the things I had forgotten or didn't know to get. They installed everything perfectly and put in nice rocker switches and dimmer switches for the whole thing. They were there every day, on time, and stayed late to make sure that the job got done by the holidays, since they knew I was having a house full of people. Their work looked so great when it was done that everyone was asking about it, and it was a lot of fun showing it off.
Description of Work: Changed out all the lights in the kitchen, and went from industrial-looking fluorescent fixtures to a chandelier and recessed lighting. Everything is on dimmer switches, and Dan and his crew also put puck lights in a built-in shelf unit that look really great. I had already picked up the chandelier, and figured I would just do can lights in the ceiling. Dan called from the store to tell me that they had recessed lights that matched the color and style of my chandelier for only a bit more than the recessed lights, and asked if I wanted them. I didn't know they even existed, and as it turns out those lights made the room. Communication with all of the guys on the crew is excellent; I can't be there during the day, but they call if they have a idea or a question, and it worked fine for me. Overall, the whole thing turned out great; they put in the new lights, painted the ceiling, and it looks wonderful. Also, I can now see what I'm cooking since I have light over the stove, which I didn't have before.

 + -1 morePoor. Serious delays from what was the original commitment of about 4-6 hours for the job, start to finish. Clearly the person really did not have experience at this type of work. I ended up having to take multiple days off for reschedules and in the end, this work service person did not seem to know how to finish the job. He was prepared to leave the job "complete" with a completely exposed plywood edge showing on a fine piece of birch furniture. I had to tell him that that would look horrible. My wife and I have placed many phone calls to Dan (owner). Nothing but phone tag. He is not available at all on weekends. Never picks up his phone or answers his pages (sent 2). I would think that he would be more concerned about customer service and make some type of effort.
Description of Work: Built a shelf into a home entertainment unit, using same type of wood and staining to match.

 + 4 moreNeeded dishwasher installed quickly to have tile flooring done, their equipment damaged and dirtied freshly refinished kitchen counters. Told the workers we just had the house painted and they were the final workers before carpet. They were somewhat scattered in their work continuity (one main guy seemed to be doing all the tough work and jumping in when the other guy hit a snag so he was all over the place and seemed to be working on multiple projects at any given time). I anticipated the team of two guys to get through the project quite quickly but it seemed like it took longer than projected, especially since the one 'expert' kept getting distracted. However, they did work continuously when they were on the job. Final work was not the best as verticals were hung crooked (two sets) and had to be redone and touch up had to be pointed out. The guys were great at offering to do other items not on the original list.
Description of Work: Replaced all light fixtures, faucets, outlets, light switches, bathroom fan/heater, closet doors, 3 sets of vertical blinds, installed a new dishwasher

 + -1 moreNot well. Took a long time to schedule, crew was late to arrive, and didn't have time to install (drill) knobs and pulls so bid wasn't accurate. Won't try and reschedule this firm for the work.
Description of Work: Asked Dan, by email, to install knobs and pulls in my kitchen (over 50 knobs and pulls combined). Sent Dan an email two weeks ago. Tried to make an appt. on a Saturday, but his crew had child care problems. Finally made an appt. for 4:00 PM on Friday. Told Dan I would only be home for two hours and he said they could get it done in one and one-half hours. I left work two hours early to meet his crew. I called Dan at 3:00 and left a voicemail asking him to call if his team was going to be late. No return call.He called at 4:00 PM said they would be late. They arrived at 4:45, but realized they would have to drill holes in all the cabinets to install knobs and pulls. They were only prepared, and had scheduled only enough time, to REPLACE existing knobs and pulls. Since there were no existing holes they hadn't scheduled enough time to do the job, so quoted price was wrong. Not sure why Dan never asked what the job entailed (drilling for new knobs/pulls or replacing existing hardware).

 + 6 moreEverything went great. Communication was excellent - they were there every day, and if you call with a question they get right back to you. It was "pay as you go", so I never felt like I had put out a lot of money for work that hadn't been done; that really helps keep the comfort level where it should be. Despite the fact that I changed the parameters of the job several times (it kept getting bigger and bigger), they were able to accommodate all of the things that I asked for and then some. This is a company with 3 brothers working together, and they all have different skills and expertise. You really get the benefit of a lot of experience between the three of them, which makes it kind of a one stop shop. You don't often find one company that can do it all - electrical, tile, plumbing, painting, the whole thing. There are no sub-contractors to deal with, just Dan and his brothers and the crew that they bring in to do things like the demolition and the painting. If you have the opportunity to work with these people, don't pass it up. They are honest, helpful, friendly, cleaned up every day, and generally made the whole experience very easy.
Description of Work: A little bit of everything. The original job was a bathroom remodel to make it handicapped-accessible, which included moving plumbing, tiling a floor, re-vamping the shower, putting in a new sink and toilet, painting and plastering, widening a doorway and putting in new doors. They also installed two wheelchair ramps outside. They did such good work at such a reasonable price that we ended up working on other parts of the house. Budget was a major issue for me, but even after the installation of new laminate floors and baseboards, a ceiling fan, sliding glass and screen doors, I still spent less than some of the other builders that I interviewed would have charged for the bathroom alone.

The upstairs bathroom is fully functional for the first time in several years, the tile was matched very well and the touch up paint matched perfectly. The downstairs bathroom has a toilet that doesn't rock, a floor with no stains and a new ceiling. Dan repaired old construction damage to the heating vents and the fan. I feel that he charged a very fair price, was very punctual and attentive to our job, though there were several others going on at the same time. I felt that he did quality work with an eye on the budget, given that this was a rental house. Overall, I was very pleased. I would use them again.
Description of Work: I asked Dan to look at a bathroom that was leaking, resulting in the bathroom ceiling below it collapsing. What a mess! He was not the first estimate I got, but he was the most reasonable. He discussed in detail the work needed, replacing tile in the upstairs bathroom, repairing the drywall in the ceiling, recaulking the tub, checking for leaks, repainting, replacing the linoleum and reseating the toilet that "rocked." My daughter rents this house from us, and she felt comfortable having Dan and his crew working there. Dan estimated the job would take two or three days, and started right away. His helper was a new employee, but Dan was there daily to assist and supervise him. When the caulking was not to Dan's standards, he asked his guy to take it out and redo it correctly. Replacing the rocking toilet turned out to be a major challenge, with a one hour job turning into a 5 hour, 3 man marathon of frustration, resulting in a new toilet, new "seating" and a functional bathroom. Turns out the floor was slightly uneven, but did not show in any level they tried. Dan did not change extra for all the extra time, just for the toilet that was not originally going to be replaced, and the normal time it would have taken to install it. Dan found a small piece of left over linoleum for the bathroom in Home Depot, and it looked so much better than the old stuff. Since it looked like there was going to be a trip to the dump anyway, I asked them to take all the junk that was on the side of the house with them. They were very gracious about taking down a shed that had not been used for 20 years, a spider filled BBQ and assorted broken patio furniture and doors. Dan works with his brothers and they were a pleasure to have in the house, all of them were polite, professional, and hardworking.

 + -1 moreDan arrived when he said he would for the free quote. I got another quote from a different company, but Dan's was much more reasonable. I scheduled the work for the following week. A couple of days before the scheduled work, I asked if it would be possible to replace the shut-off valves as well. He accommodated me by arriving early enough to take a look and pick up any needed parts from the hardware store. In the end, the final price was lower than the original estimate, and I was very happy with the work. Both Dan and his partner Nick were professional and conscientious of all time constraints. They cleaned up any mess they made and disposed of all old parts. I would definitely use them again. Thanks Dan!
Description of Work: Replaced old corroded kitchen faucet & dishwasher air gap. Also replaced four pairs of old-style shut-off valves in kitchen and 2 bathrooms with new quarter-turn ones.

Although they had some trouble with the plumbing connections the work was completed in one day. They were careful not to damage existing old plaster and did a neat job. I noticed a small leak the following day and he returned to fix it promptly.
Description of Work: Installed pedestal sink and bead board in bathroom. Also replaced exhaust fan and added an electrical outlet in this bathroom.
