Jeff Ratchford, owner of J. Ratch Construction completed the job in one week during the hottest week of the summer. (One day was 108 degrees). He and his team were punctual, polite and cleaned up after themselves each day. Jeff gave us his estimate in a timely manner and answered all emails and phone calls ASAP. He researched and answered all questions promptly. Jeff was friendly and professional. The roof looks beautiful!

the work went like clock work. all the workers we're very courteous and efficient. Jeff was very nice and answered all my concerns . every thing was done in three days . I had some extra eave work done and old cable wires taken down which he personally came out after the job was over to go over everything inspecting and cleaning up here and there. I strongly recommend him to anyone needing a new roof.

Excellent job quick efficient and kind

We had tiles falling off our roof and Jeff came out the same day I called. We had some dry rot and issues with debris in the valley's which over time would create rotting. We also had a lot of moss on the roof and Jeff told us about a new technique of putting zinc strips at the top of the roof and when it rains the zinc washes over the roof and prohibits the growth. Jeff cleaned off all the moss, installed the zinc strips, replaced the metal in the valley's, replaced the barge rafter, felt and the tiles. We also had issues of the nails on existing tiles on the edge of the roof pulling loose, Jeff used screws to secure all the tiles. Jeff and his crew were there when they said they would be, 8:00am on the nose! Jeff was great at communicating his schedule and stayed with the job till it was done. Everything was done in about a day and half and the yard was left clean when they left. Great Job Jeff, you will be our first call for any future roof repairs.

They were on Angie's list. That is where I found them and that is why I compared them to others and they did a good job. The quality of work. They showed up on time and did what they said they were going to do. It was a good price.

Jeff Ratchford (owner of J. Ratch Construction) was the first of five roofing contractors that I met with. Prior to meeting Jeff my expectation, from reading his Angies List reviews, was that I was going to meet a competent, "tell it like it is" person. For me, along with all of the positive reviews Jeff has on Angies List, I was also impressed by the "F" review given by that one guy. Assuming there was some truth in that review, it was pretty easy to read between the lines and gain some respect for Jeff's character in dealing with that situation. Anyhow, my impression upon meeting Jeff was consistent with my expectations. He listened as I described the work I wanted to have done and responded appropriately. He also told me things that I was not aware of and made good suggestions. Another plus for Jeff is that he has his general contractors license, although roofing is his main business. After my wife and I decided that we wanted Jeff to do the job for us, he got to it right away. Jeff's two employees (Ben & Adrian?) were very good. All work was done in a timely and professional manner. Jeff's Dad, a great guy, also spent time helping out on the job (ask him about horses if you have the opportunity to meet him). J. Ratch-- highly recommended!

Jeff was great. Professional, courteous, and thorough. He was on the job on and off and explained any needed changes. He did a few extra things for me too at no charge-small little details that workers from other jobs should have done.

After some minor problems finding a date for his free estimate visit, Jeff Ratchford then provided me with a reasonable estimate for the work I needed. He was able to schedule my work to be done quickly. He and his two roofers, Ben and Adrian, showed up on time. After explaining to his two roofers all the work, Jeff left to buy materials. He returned and worked with them for awhile before leaving. Ben and Adrian worked through the afternoon and completed most of the main roofing jobs - the barges, ridge shingles, fixing the valley. They also removed three gutters that I want to replace. The next day the three of them mostly worked on replacing the 4x12 beams, finished up anything else, and did cleanup. I was impressed that every time they found dry rot in the areas they were fixing, they replaced it, even when it was not something that I or Jeff had pointed out originally. Jeff was quite pleasant and seems to take pride in having his company do a good job. Ben and Adrian certainly knew their craft as well.

Jeff (owner) provided several estimates for my review. I really appreciated his patience and professionalism--I kept changing the scope of the work. Finally, my pocket book had the final word and I choose a composition shingle with life-time limited warranty and J. Ratch Construction 10-yr workmanship guarantee. I am very happy with my new roof--color, looks, and sailed through the County Inspector Approval process. In addition to the new roof, I also replaced the gutters, upgraded attic insulation, and installed skylights--solatubes. Jeff smoothly accommodated and coordinated his work with all of these other projects/companies. I highly recommend J. Ratch Construction based on my very positive--trouble and stress free--experience.

I had only one other estimate by another Angie's List roofer, but chose J Ratch because Jeff would coordinate everything. I wouldn't have to make calls and schedule anything. That in itself was worth it. We are so happy with everything! The roof is gorgeous; I highly recommend spending a bit more for Certainteed Landmark Solaris Cool Roof shingles. They just make sense and I anticipate savings over the years during Sacramento's long hot summers. Our 2'x4' skylight, unbelievable! I just showed Jeff a photo of how we wanted the living room ceiling to look (bevelled) with the skylight installed, and he made it happen beautifully! And the tubular skylights! We had originally asked for only one in the hallway, but loved it so much we ordered two more for the livingroom above my workspace. What a huge difference they make in what was once a dark house. Jeff and his crew provided such quality work and reasonable prices, I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

Jeff was a pleasure to work with. We contacted 3 different Roofing Companies (all from Angies List) and Jeff (the Owner of Ratch Construction) responded in a timely manner which we appreciated because the existing roof had several leaks. One of the other companies requested that we go their showroom 1st to select the new tile prior to them even going out to the house to put together a bid for us..When we never made an appointment to look at new tile they chose to never provide us with a bid. The third companies prices were laughable. All of this made us appreciate Jeff even more. We too have our own construction co, due to scheduling conflicts we decided to hire a third party. My husband had priced out how much all the materials, labor, permit, insurance etc would cost & Jeffs pricing was right on.

We had a leak on our 25 year old shake roof after a major rainstorm in December. We called several contractors for estimates on replacing the roof. Jeff was nice on the phone although understandably very busy. His was the lowest bid, so along with his high rating, we decided to go with him. Jeff was prompt and thorough, and he answered any questions we had. The job was completed on time and with minimal hassle, everything we wanted. We would not hesitate to use him in the future. Contractor Jeff was prompt, professional and very personable. Answered any questions completely and in terms easily understood by one like myself who doesn't know a whole lot about such things. Jeff made himself available cheerfully at all times. He was a pleasure to work with. I may have paid a little more than another contractor might have charged but it was worth knowing I could feel comfortable and confident in the final outcome. I feel blessed to have found such a wonderful young man.

Jeff and his crew did an excellent job. I picked him because of excellent reviews here and his bid was the best by far. The entire job, including some extra work came out to be just what I expected. He always responded promptly to contacts. In fact when he first came over to give me an estimate, I got home a few minutes before the agreed time, he had already been on the roof and gave me the estimate right away. He was realistic in his estimate of when he could get to the job, and in fact ended up doing it much earlier, which was much better. It took as long as he said it would. He also was able to fix a door that was unworkable and had needed replacing for some time. He also fixed some dry rot in my wood siding, matched the boards and made it look great. Everything was cleaned up, and all the details were taken care of smoothly. For example at the very end, Mike, his right hand man, installed smoke detectors and rekeyed the door. There were some adjustments to the door that Mike made sure were all done thoroughly, and cleaned up carefully when he was done. The subcontractors for the various parts of the job were pleasant and I felt good about them. Jeff even called me and emailed me from the side of the freeway with a flat tire and a problem on another job because we had agreed on that time to do the business. So big points to him for reliability and honesty. I'd highly recommend him to anyone who needs roofing or any general contracting job done.

I discovered a "water blister" in the wall of an upstairs bedroom after a severe rain storm and assumed it was coming from the roof. I called and left a message on the answering machine of J Ratch Construction on 12/15 regarding the leaking roof. Jeff called me back shortly after (an hour or so.) He was very nice and said that he was pretty busy -had a lot of calls due to the storm- but would call me back the next morning once he had a chance to go through all his messages requesting service and set a schedule. The next day -12/16 -when I hadn't heard back from Jeff by 10:15AM I called him to see where I was on his list of appointments. At that time he said he was on a roof and wasn't sure he could get to me that day, but could probably get me in sometime the next day,12/17. I wasn't sure I should wait (another blister had appeared after a subsequent less severe rain) and considered calling someone else. Jeff said he understood and to just let him know if I found another roofer, though he felt most roofers would be in the same position. Jeff called me later that day to see if I still needed him to come out. I hadn't called another company so Jeff said he could give me an estimate on 12/17. He arrived during the window of time he gave me for our appointment. He took a look and explained the leak was in an area called a 'valley" pointed it out to me and said it was a common area for leaks to occur. He went over the repair process and materials he would use and why. Then he gave me an estimate for the job. I felt comfortable with the estimate and so I hired Jeff to complete the repair. He took $150 deposit for the job and said he would be back 12/18 at 9AM. He arrived on time, unloaded materials- his associate arrived shortly after and stayed to do the work. Jeff returned later that afternoon/ early evening to collect the balance. He guaranteed the work and suggested I not repair the bedroom wall until it rained a time or two to be sure the leak was completely repaired and to let him know if there were any problems. The repair looks good and so far no additional leaks have appeared.

Jeff was on time and very professional. He went out of his way to match my roof tiles which are no longer available. Very pleased overall.

I first contacted Jeff to get a roof bid. I had already received two other roof bids prior to contacting Jeff. Initially, he was difficult to get in touch with, but we finally setup a date to have him access the roof. Prior to him going to the house and in order to help him determine his bid, I contacted a satellite company to get exact measurements and a comprehensive overview of the roof: I spent $58 for that report to assist Jeff in get an exact bid. Jeff showed up when he said he would. He spent a fair amount of time on top of the roof looking it over. I felt he was thorough. We talked about the dimensions of the job. He gave me good feedback and was thoughtful in his remarks. I appreciated his feedback. Because I am utilizing a rehab loan: a Fannie Mae Homestyle loan, there are additional paperwork requirements required by the bank. Additionally, the contract can't be just a statement of work to be done and payment terms. There are additional terms required. Since Jeff's proposal did not contain those elements, the bank forwarded to Jeff a boilerplate contract for his use. It was at that time that Jeff began showing a very unprofessional and emotionally unstable side to his character. After Jeff received the boilerplate contract from the bank last week, he did not submit it nor did he contact me with any concerns or questions. I contacted him at the beginning of this week to find out how things were going. With a very loud and raised voice, he berated me for forcing him to fill out 'lots of paperwork.' He became quite belligerent and hostile on the phone. He stated several times that he didn't need the work or as he put it, "I need your roof like a I need a f****** hole in the head." He stated that he didn't like to fill out all of this paperwork and he was a simple guy. I responded that I understood his frustration and that I would do everything that I could to make it easier for him. To that end, I approached the bank and requested that they get all of the paperwork filled out for Jeff, so that I could fulfill his request to "just bring me the forms to sign and I'll sign them." The bank complied and completed the paperwork and even filled out the contract terms according to standard terms since Jeff's 'contract' that was titled ?Proposal? had no terms in it, except as I said, the work to be performed and how he was to be paid. I forwarded that to Jeff via Docusign, so that all he would have to do is sign it. He refused to sign the contract. I spoke with him this morning and he again, with a raised voice and as he stated, "I'm trying not to lose my cool again,? he berated me for presenting him with a contract filled out for him (even though the bank had sent him the blank boilerplate construction contract to him the prior week.) He stated that he was no lawyer (to which I agreed as neither am I) that he would need time to review it. It was at this point in the conversation that Jeff became very unprofessional. Jeff stated that he thought there were loopholes whereby he might not "get my money, and if I don't get paid, well, I have a crazy side, and I will go to the ends of the earth to get what's owed me. Because then you'd be messing with my family and no one messes with my family." While dealing with Jeff's emotional instability, I tried to reason with Jeff that if there are any terms in the contract that he didn?t like that he could change them as the bank was simply trying to fulfill my request to fill out the contract for Jeff. He then again harangued me with, "I've spent too much time on all this paperwork and I haven't gotten a dime from you. I got 10 customers screaming for me to work on their roofs and I'll get around to looking at this when I got time." I have cancelled his contract and bid. I would not use him in the future despite all of the positive reviews and even my own feeling that he may do good work. By his own statements, he admits to being emotionally unstable. He raised his voice and cursed at me. At no time did I ever raise my voice, speak impolitely, curse, or become argumentative with Jeff. Since his professional behavior is so poor, I don't wish to be subjected to it again. I can only image what would happen if there was a problem in the future and how he would conduct himself then. I actually am somewhat concerned that he may become violent and may attempt to seek revenge for this review as he made vague threats regarding anything threatening his family?which he may just consider this to be. Well, I won?t be intimidated, and I am submitting this review, so that others may not have to deal with Jeff?s unprofessional behavior. My best wishes to other in their dealings with Jeff Ratchford of J Ratch Construction.

He was here at the agreed upon time and the work was performed according to specs. This is the second time I have used him to make roof repairs and I have been extremely satisfied both times. The repairs were on different parts of my roof, it was not a call back.

Unfortunately, he felt that the roofing material we have now precluded doing a repair. Would recommend him to others.

Jeff was actually 20 minutes early which I thought was great. A 7 inch cricket was built and 3 rows of shingles were removed on both sides. No leaks and great drainage into the gutters now instead of into the garage. All done in 7+ hours and for $505 less than my other bid.

Jeff the owner came out and provided me with a fair estimate the day after my initial contact with him. His estimate took a few days to arrive but was $1500 lower than two other estimates. Work started within a week, the roof was off in just a few hours and the yard was cleaned by the demo company of all nails and debris. The following day (a Saturday) Jeff and his crew arrived to perform dry rot repairs, add insulation and lay down the roofing felt. One man from his crew returned on Monday to continue working on the roof, he did not know the schedule for gutters or anything else. With only one man on the roof each day it took 3 days to complete, which seemed longer than it was when there are two small children in the house being woken up at 7:30 each morning and being unable to take naps due to the hammering on the roof. Yard cleanup was accomplished after the roof was completed, there were still several dozen nails left behind behind but overall I'm very impressed with the job. There was one leak in the gutters, which I contacted Jeff about on a Friday. He had somebody out there on Monday to fix the gutter. Pros: Roof looks great Best price I could find Very friendly english speaking crew Cons: A larger crew would be nice to expedite roof replacement Communication with crew could be better so I could know when to expect project to have been done Cleanup wasn't the greatest but it could be been better (I went over the yard again with my shop magnet). I would go with Jeff again in a heartbeat, the roof looks exceptional and I"m sure it will last much longer than I plan on being in the house.
