Description of Work: I had a mouse/rat problem in my garage, attic, and crawl space. They'd had a party in a large bag of bird seed, and from there, they infested other spaces. Based on Angie's List, I chose this company. They were punctual, friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable. | |The cost was high, but I liked the one-year warranty, and I liked the fact that I could call during the first two months to report any continuing problems, which would be repaired at no additional cost. | |They cleaned the droppings in the garage and deodorized, and they installed new screens on vents that had been compromised. The service also added a shim and a new sweep to my garage door because there was a small gap accessible to mice. And they made a new, tight-fitting access door to my crawl space. The old one had a small gap, sufficient to allow rodent access. They said my roof was tight, but the house had several access points, primarily through compromised vent screens. | |After they cleaned the droppings etc in the garage, they instructed me to set several traps in the garage, attic, and crawl space. They said that, with the house now sealed, I must catch any rodents that could not escape. I did this and quickly caught four rodents. | |After a few weeks, I started hearing noises inside the walls again and found new droppings. I called the company, and they came out to inspect. The rats had chewed through some old vent screens that had not been replaced. (On the first trip, the screens were deemed sufficient. But the rats did chew through them.) So new screens were installed on any vents that still had the older screens. They also showed me how to refine my trap baiting techniques to increase my success. | |At this point (four days after the second visit), I'm still hearing rats trying to chew through the new screens, but that's to be expected because they will keep trying to access at familiar points. It will take another week or two before I know if they are permanently gone. | |Expect to pay more for this service. To get the most for your investment, do call them back if the problem persists, ask them to inspect your trapping technique, and ask what further measures you (or they) should be taking. | |On the down side, the cleanup was not sufficient, and I found other large collections of droppings that I had to sweep out of the garage myself. They were at my house for about four hours, so I thought they could have done a better cleanup job. | |I also would recommend doing some online research about rats and mice so you can learn their behaviors and be able to trap more effectively. | |For example, traps should be set along walls because rats cannot see very well, so they rub their scent along baseboards as a way to mark a trail... much like ants do. | |Also, be sure your traps are the correct size. A mouse trap is not large enough to catch a rat. I recommend the big Tomcat traps (black plastic with a bait cup) rather than the wooden snap traps. You can reuse the Tomcat traps. Just be sure to wash them with bleach water after each kill, or the dead rodent's scent will remain as a repellent to the others, and they'll avoid the trap.
